The Mitch Kearns Combat Tracker Boxed Set by J.T. Sawyer is comprised of the first three novels of the series, which rounds out to about 500 pages of espionage thriller goodness. Mitch Kearns is an FBI agent and trainer who after teaching his class, finds that the daughter of his former Black Ops teacher has sought him out.
Devorah Leitner is in trouble and in winding up at Mitch's doorstep, she has made him a target, as well. This first novel called "Dead in Their Tracks" has Dev and Mitch playing a game of evasion through the desert, as assassins track them. An international plot is being hatched. Dev and Mitch have to thwart the terrorist attack before it becomes a reality.
In Book 2, "Counter-Strike" Dev and Mitch go globetrotting to stop the potential release of an extinction level virus. In Book 3, "The Kill List," Mitch is in the home of a friend who is having a reunion of sorts that is strangely reminiscent of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians with a survivalist component.
The stories are hardcore espionage with a nod toward survivalist culture and tracking. There is a bit of a mashup that includes a mystery aspect, but also plenty of action-adventure stuff. Despite the fact that I was swept away by these novels, I would caution that if you read these too quickly, they may appear redundant.
It's funny how these things go. I read Kage, by John Donohue, a martial arts thriller. The book had a character who belonged to a border patrol tracking unit. I thought that was interesting. The next day, I saw this combat tracker set on Amazon, so I decided to give it a try. Serendipity and synchronicity in action.
Mitch Kearney is combat tracker for the FBI, looking for fugitives and missing persons. Circumstances lead him into hunts. In the first book, he meets cute with Dev, his Israeli love interest. They're constantly pursuing and being pursued by various bad guys, and being hampered by bureaucratic bunglers.
The tracking stuff is very interesting, and there's some good action sequences. Read one after another, the books are repetitive, but I think that's the nature of the series.
I thought the plot was interesting and the emphasis on tracking and survival skills was different. However, the writing style was awkward and full of grammatical and usage errors. I'm not an English teacher by any stretch of the imagination and I don't normally notice the writing style of a novel. However, the weaknesses in these three books were significant enough to distract me from the story line. I'm usually obsessive with series, reading every one in order until I get to the end. I don't think I'll be able to go forward with this particular series though.
This set was recommended by my husband as one of the better series he's read in awhile. He's now making his way through the rest of the series, which is what will be doing next. The series features Mitch Kearns, a former special forces combat tracker working as a trainer and tracker for the FBI in AZ. In book one, he meets Deborah "Dev" Leitner, former Israeli military now working with her father, Mitch's black ops trainer and mentor. Dev has been undercover for months working in a U.S. corporation that contracts with the military, among other things. Mitch finds himself caught up in the chase, but as the pursued. In book two, Mitch and Dev follow the trail of a kidnapped professor into the wilds of Indonesia, where a burned CIA agent is working a deadly plot of revenge. In book three, Mitch is back in Colorado, where he tracked and captured the son of an elusive international assassin who was transporting invaluable forgery plates when his vehicle went off an icy mountain curve. The son died in prison, but the people involved in his capture (Mitch), trial, incarceration and murder have been kidnapped, drugged, and deposited in a deep, remote valley that's to be flooded within days. These books are suspense filled and the characters are well developed, as are the settings. I found them difficult to put down and am looking forward to book four.
WELL WRITTEN THRILLER Bykjkearnson July 8, 2017 Format: Kindle Edition The Mitch Kearns Combat Thriller Series combines well written characters with thrilling action, and brings forth tracking and survival skills. Mitch Kearns is a former Army Special Forces tracker turned FBI Tracker and survival instructor in the US Southwestern District. At the end of a FBI mission, Mitch returns to his bunkhouse on a friend's ranch only to find Devorah (Dev) Leitner on his doorstep trying to avoid being captured and/or killed by a typical megalomaniac trying to take over the world through supporting oppressive third world dictators. Thus begins book one. In subsequent books two and three, the connection between Mitch and Dev grows while other equally bad antagonists "bite the dust."
I'm on the fence about this series. I finally decided on a 4 as a series, but as each individual book I'd rate them higher. While the main characters are the same, the stories in each book have no flow of connection. They also seemed a bit, forced?? It's not because they aren't apocalyptic in nature, but really it's because it just doesn't feel like a series to me, and I'm not looking for the next book... I've now read 13 of his books back to back and these just aren't his best work. Look up Until Morning Comes, his 5 book series of Carlie. Now THAT is amazing writing.
This was a decent read. Although, it was a box set it was fairly short. Which, I didn't mind, since the stories were just average. Mystery, action and love combined. But, I didn't feel there was anything that special about the characters. Sure, you learned some about them but not enough to really, really care. I think more character development would have made these books better. But, if you're looking for something to read on a weekend it's not bad.
Each book is better and more exciting. Some of the story lines sound so real, not like an author making them up. The authors description makes you feel like you are setting back and watching it happen. In some books you can get ahead of the author in the story line and know what is going to happen or see the out come, but like book three he throws you some curves and adds something you don’t expect or moves the story a different direction. Read and enjoy.
I think JT did a great job of sharing real tracking knowledge, weaving it smoothly in the story and never bogging the story down. The tracking was an integral part of the story and sharing that knowledge allowed us to understand and appreciate the story idea. The on and off friction between Mitch and Devorah seemed a little strange, but otherwise the characters were all well developed and contributed to the story. I did not put this down until I had finished it. I quickly devoured book 2 and 3.
Interesting premise but could be developed further
As a box set, I was satisfied. However, on a book by book basis, I found them to be a little light. The last one, for example, had the potential to be developed much further but, well, it just ended.
Would I read more in the series? Definitely but it would depend on what other titles were available at the time.
Mitch isn't your usual FBI agent. He teaches other people how to track the clues that people leave when they pass through an area. Not only is it a great skill to have, it also saves his life on more than one occasion. He's the best at what he does. Great stories and well thought out.
These books are well written and edited. A good easy read however I did find the plot somewhat predictable. That said, the details were well laid out and the characters were well defined without going overboard as seems to be the trend lately. Another plus was the fact that the romance was not over done as well, much appreciated. I think that many people would rate this as a five star.
While reading this series of books I was also reading a book about politics by a current US senator and a book about the history of submarines. I liked this series of books the best. Yes, these action fiction types of books are similar in their formulas, but they are exciting and entertaining. I enjoyed this one.
I find that my favorite authors have a way of filling in the extra words as a part of the story rather than grandiose mundane descriptions that cause me to skim quickly to the next part of the story. J T Sawyer has that knack. I'm looking forward to more of his expertise..
I enjoyed all three books. The story line kept me interested and the writing made it easy to follow. This was my first experience with this author and I look forward to reading more from him.
Could not put down. Read all 3 in two days in between all my housework etc. Adventurous! Spine tingling had me on pins & needles. Kept me guessing with a complete surprise ending. Even threw in romance almost made you jealous. Terrific believable characters!
One of the better adventure series I have read. JT Sawyer kept the focus on the action story, including the budding romance between Mitch and Dov, while not using gratuitous sex to try to move the story along. looking forward to Book 4.
Male FBI agent combined with Israeli trained female, combine to rid the world of some evil people. Including some turncoats. Specially trained tracker leads to some high adventure.
Mix likeable/lovable characters with constant action in a fast paced plot loaded with lots of surprises, and the pages congruent quickly enough! Sawyer is a master at creating high level entertainment that just doesn't stop!
A thoroughly enthralling and engrossing book. With as much action as you could possibly want it then continues surprising you until you lose yourself completely and are overtaken with the ever twisting events. A must read
This was a fun read. Mitch and Dev make for great characters and you can feel the electricity between them. I liked the three-part story and how the characters were woven together. I hope to read the rest of the series.
Enjoyed the stotylines. At least for me it was a real page turner. Mitch and Dev together are a good combination. Look out bad guys. This team is the real deal. Mitch could have been a great character for Loius Lamour.
Readers into an adventure series , this is for you. Two characters complement the other in running from or trying to find vengeance seekers. Fast moving action provided by insights into tracking methods.
