Many people consider the novella form -- 17,500 words to 40,000 words -- the perfect length. It's long enough to flesh out characters, but short enough to read in one sitting while still having plenty of plot. This volume collects 8 crime and suspense AS I LIE DEAD, by Fletcher Flora

A four-star book, but for a few issues. The first five stories were great, but I don't believe any of them were novellas. A novella, as defined by most of the professional genre writer organizations in America, is 17,500-40,000 words in length. Without knowing the exact word counts, it didn't feel like the first three, at the least, were long enough, whereas the final offering felt more like a full-length novel (40,000+ words). Because I'm a writer, and a stickler for these definitions besides, this killed a little of my enjoyment. The stories themselves, with the exception of the final story, and two meh offerings before that, were very good. Anytime more than half of a collection is good, I recommend it to others. I'm doing that with this book, as well. There's plenty here for the mystery/thriller fan to enjoy, and at ninety-nine cents (USD), the price is perfect to take a chance for so much material.
