Strength in numbers can make the difference between life and death—but only the right numbers.
Megan Wolford has finally found herself a family she and her young daughter can rely on in these terrifying times. Their group is small, but they trust each other with their lives—and Wyatt is showing her day by day how to love again. With a long winter looming, they’ll have to hunker down in the lodge in order to survive, but there are deadlier threats to their safety than harsh conditions.
When a neighboring group is struck by ruthless raiders led by the fearsome McDaniels, they must form an uneasy alliance with Megan’s new family. Newcomers mean more mouths to feed and more people to trust, but they will need every pair of hands they can to fight off the raiders.
Grace Hamilton is the prepper pen-name for a bad-ass, survivalist momma-bear of four kids, and wife to a wonderful husband. After being stuck in a mountain cabin for six days following a flash flood, she decided she never wanted to feel so powerless or have to send her kids to bed hungry again. Now she lives the prepper lifestyle and knows that if SHTF or TEOTWAWKI happens, she’ll be ready to help protect and provide for her family.
Combine this survivalist mentality with a vivid imagination (as well as a slightly unhealthy day dreaming habit) and you get a prepper fiction author. Grace spends her days thinking about the worst possible survival situations that a person could be thrown into, then throwing her characters into these nightmares while trying to figure out "What SHOULD you do in this situation?"
It’s her wish that through her characters, you will get to experience what life will be like and essentially learn from their mistakes and experiences.
TIMES ARE VERY HARD BUT BANDING TOGETHER MIGHT JUST SAVE SOME, NOT ALL BUT SOME.
Dark Defiance: A Post-Apocalyptic EMP Saga Filled With Fascinating Characters & Prepper Info (EMP Lodge Series Book 3) by Grace Hamilton is a well written tell of a small group of people coming together to survive the aftermath of an EMP event that takes down almost all the electronics.
The characters are well defined, and you will find yourself routing for them to overcome the hardships and the challenges thrown their way. The main characters, the Morris family (Wyatt, Jack, Willow, Rosie, and Ryland), their long time friends Chase and Albert, Megan & Caitlin take in addional members who have had their lives destroyed by a ruthless group of thugs that are only out to take, mame, destroy, and kill everyone and everything thing in their path.
As hard as their struggles are, the Morris group not only defined those who are not capable to stand up the the chaos and violence brought on by a group of Raiders but the provide shelter and food and just as important, friendship, compassion, and love to those around them.
This book and series is about banding and bounding together to survive. There are happy times as well as loss of some of their close friends and even loss of some of their family as well.
They come together to mourn and celibate the losses of those who were loved and who sacrificed their life's for those they loved and those who couldn't protect themselves from the new hardships and challenges brought on by the evil unleashed aftermath of the fall on civilization.
This book and series is one worth reading if you enjoy people who come together against the odds to survive and stand together to overcome the cruelty of their new world. I hope you, too, will find yourself enjoying this book and series.
GOD DAMN IT!!!!! It's been four and a half years since a book has made me cry like this one did. These characters are so true to humanity, the author's writing is so action-packed. This series explores in the most realistic way, what it means to survive, what it means to thrive, and the sacrifices you have to make along the way. Just go get the damned series and read it. :-)
With this book the raiders become a huge problem. First their allies show up, their camp decimated and they had no where else to go, no one else to help them. The two groups were a bit wary of each other, but they worked to fortify the lodge. Unfortunately the raiders found them, at the worst possible time, a time they were taking a break and celebrating being alive and did their worst. This made our group scared and fired up, Megan (no surprise there) talked everyone else to take the fight to the the raiders. The fight was crazy, our group took some hard hits, but they did what they set out to do and they are safe for a while now. I liked the ending to this one, a big family dinner, one they all needed as they face the winter ahead.
In this series each book deteriorates in the quality of dialogue and story. This was book 3 and a disappointment. I'm going to skip this author in the future. The typos and mistakes toward the end were irritating because I felt like the author doesn't care that I paid real money for this book. Prime example-The last sentence in the book: Chapter Thirty One
I enjoy this series but there was so much in this book that had me pulling my hair and yelling at how stupid and irresponsible the main characters were which is what led to the loss and sadness. It was completely unnecessary.
Sometimes I can write a synopsis to explain the story and sometimes I suck at it. This is one of those times, but here is one written by the author: “When a neighboring group is struck by ruthless raiders led by the fearsome Connor McDaniels, they must form an uneasy alliance with Megan’s new family. She doesn’t take kindly to newcomers, but they will need every pair of hands they can get to fight off the raiders. After McDaniels turns his sights on Megan’s people, she plans an assault that will put an end to the threat he poses once and for all—she’ll need every person she can get at her side. But first, she has to learn to trust them.”
This one definitely had a lot more action than the other books. It was much less about prepping and much more about taking out the strongest oppositional force. I liked that, it felt like it breathed some new life into this series and it definitely shook a lot of things up.
We have the same cast of characters who are all trying to figure out how to live with this “new normal” life that is stripped of most of what they would have called essentials just months ago. Tempers will flare and the work still needs to be done every day.
I can’t talk much about the last third of the story since it involves some major plot points, but know that you are in for some crazy changes. Also, as I said above, I liked those changes and it felt like it was adding a lot of different depth to the story.
All of the choices that the Lodge made, seemed appropriate. Especially with the group of people there and the different personalities that they all had. Sadly, once again talking about it here would spoil the story — so I can’t!
The narration provided by Andrew Tell has really been a shining star of this series. It allows for the plot to continue but each person feels a little more real.
They are prepping for winter. They have begun trading with Evan's group (Kyles brother). They speak of the Raiders who are terrorizing everyone. The raiders finally devastate Evan's group leaving only 10 survivors. They show up at the lodge because their hidden cabin is destroyed. Brenda had also been attacked when Megan was rescuing Caitlin from her. Her home had basically been destroyed in book 2 so she was now with the family at the Lodge. Megan and Brenda had killed 4 of the raiders at that time and they are now searching for her. Evan's group is Tara with daughter Amy (her son was just killed in the raid), Bryan, Garrett, (blanking but there were 10 of them). Several are killed and they are left with 7 by the end. Including Evan, Bryan, another man, Gregg (older with a heart problem), Tara, Amy, Sarah and her son Frankie. The Raiders attack the lodge and Jack is cut with a rusty knife. There is no way to stop the infection. The Lodge plans a raid on the Raiders and are succesful in killing them all, including the leader. At their fortress they find 3 survivors (the family who owned the home) Henry & Linda and their grand daughter Emma. Very sadly, Jack is killed in the battle. He went down a hero and it turns out he was going to die anyway because of the infection - septis. They are decide to stay at the lodge and prepare for winter.

Book three of this excellent series. Every day is a fight for survival for the group staying in the lodge built by Wyatts father one of the primary characters along with his mother, brother, his sister in law, the children . Megan and Catlin have been welcomed into their family as well as other family, lifelong friends. A murderous group of men who call themselves the Raiders steal supplies and murder other survivors. There leader is barbaric psychopath who enjoys the power he has and delights in murdering helpless people. He feels this gives him power over his men if they fear him also. The Raiders sights are set on Wyatt and the others who live at the lodge. What follows is a story of survival by making hard choices that sometimes result in the death of loved ones and friends. Again, an excellent read!! Enjoyed immensely!!
This is the third book in the EMP Lodge series. I'd like to say that the pace of the story telling has improved, however, that is not the case. The story continues to unfold at a glacial pace similar to the first two books.
Fortunately there is some action towards the end of the book, however, it was over almost before it began. It's odd that the author can put so much detail into the overall story but cannot do the same for battle sequences.
I'll continue with the remaining books just to finish the series, even if it will be somewhat challenging.
It’s really great reading an apocalyptic series from the viewpoint of a woman for a change. There’s a little less blood and violence and more character building storyline. TEOTWAWKI will suck but it’s nice to remember there will still be reasons for going on; love, family and friendship. Without all of that what’s the point? This author has a great balance of end time storylines mixed with plausible relationship stories. Recommend for all readers. Eager to start the next book!
As tragedy strikes a neighboring community and the survivors show up at the lodge where Wyatt, his family along with Meghan and her daughter reside. Now they have ten extra mouths to feed and souls to comfort.
The group that attacked Evan and his group show up at the lodge. A gunfight ensues and Wyatt’s group defends their home turf but with tragedy and loss.
I've read the first 3 books in this series, and now I find myself hoping the next is ready for me to read. Much of my earlier life I spent making sure my wife and children were safe. Now I'm older and had a stroke, and can't do what I once did. It is nice to read stories about others going through all those things I prepared for. Now it's time for others to do what needs to be done.
I have read many books similar and this is good except for one of the main characters. She makes stupid decisions. She won't listen to others with more experience than her. At some point I would have just said ok you go and kill them all because for us to do it properly we have to plan. But she just gets on her soap box saying lets go lets go lets go. Other than that it is a really good series. Frustrating.
I will give 3.5 stars. The story is interesting but, I do not like Megan. Her attitude seems to be, as long as my kid is ok everyone else is cannon fodder. She does seem to have grown attached to the lodge family, and that makes me worry for the next book. Is it going to be a whole lot of Megan’s angst and guilt feelings. Guilt I will say that she really shouldn’t feel. Not sure I want to read a whole book of Megan’s oh woe is me routine.
It's been awhile since I read book two because for some reason I missed my updates but I'm glad I found it because I really like this series. These characters are great and I like that there's no cussing or too much violence. To me, this makes it more real rather than overly dramatic. Can't wait to read the next one!
The EMP Lodge Series: Books 1 to 3 by Grace Hamilton and Andrew Tell Good, but not my favorite – perhaps because the narration was not the best. The authors took time to include now narrow-minded humans can be, instead of everyone always knowing exactly the correct thing to do. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had read it instead of listening to it.
I have read the first three books in this series and I like how the characters come to life, very well developed but the story line is so so slow. This book I read up to about 20%into it then literally swiped forward to about 90% and I don’t think I missed a thing. I cannot bring myself to finish this series perhaps the authors other books will be better,
Wish I could give it that. The story is fantastic with happiness, sadness, thrills, and plenty of excitement. The need for proofreading is significant with misspellings, poor grammar, and terrible punctuation! I don’t really understand how a person as gifted as the author is could make so many mistakes.
I love this genre of books but was fed up with the books where there is no focus on survival and survival skills and only mindless violence is the whole story. Although this book series also has violence but there is a good portion where people are focusing on survival by using various survival skills. The writing is ok, could have been better. But I liked this series and will recommend.
"His motto was prepare for the worst and hope for the best."
This is the third book of the EMP LODGE series and I am enjoying the characters and the storyline. It is not as action filled (or blood and gut filled for that matter) as some post-apocalyptic thrillers I've read but it moves at a fast pace and seems very credible.
Months have passed since solar flares caused a worldwide EMP that ended all electricity and technology. People have gone back to living off the land - at least some have.
Megan and her young daughter, Caitlin, have settled in comfortably living in the eastern Washington mountain lodge with Wyatt and his family and friends. She's starting to trust people again.
Then a nearby settlement is attacked and Wyatt's group has to decide if they can help the survivors. Plus they need to decide what to do about the raiders attacking group.
I like the characters, the pacing of the story, the locale, and the many prepping tips. I give this series a strong recommendation for readers that enjoy post-apocalyptic fiction, tales of the aftermath of an EMP, prepper tales, and just good adventure stories.
I really like these books, they are very interesting and not only does the story entertain you but you actually learn things about survival and pioneering ways in away that you get some detail and if it interests you you can look it up and learn more about it...awesome series
WOW! The story just keeps getting better. So much love and sorrow. Good people trying to live a good life under bad circumstances. Can’t wait to get into book 4!
Book Review: “Dark Defiance (EMP Lodge Series Book 3)” by Grace Hamilton The saga continues. Grace Hamilton provides useful tips for preppers. Great reading! As soon as I completed it, I ordered Book 4 in the series.
This so far is my favorite in the series. Full of surprises, sorrow ,love and friendship. Really great quick fast paced action. So far an excellent series
