When Ellen White wrote about prayer—its power and its necessity for the Christian—she was writing from personal experience. Often she was driven to her knees by the demands of the special work she had been called to do and her need for strength from God. This addition to the Christian Home Library (CHL) series, includes not only her most familiar and treasured statements dealing with prayer, but many others that are less known. The quotations are topically arranged to cover all the major aspects of the subject. The last four chapters of the book contain extended treatments of particular themes such as faith and prayer, the importance and privilege of prayer, the Lord’s Prayer, and prayer in the Christian life. The interest in prayer has resulted in an explosion of books on the subject. Now you can know what God’s messenger had to say about it.
In brief, Ellen Gould Harmon White was a woman of remarkable spiritual gifts who lived most of her life during the nineteenth century (1827-1915), yet through her writings she is still making a revolutionary impact on millions of people around the world. During her lifetime she wrote more than 5,000 periodical articles and 40 books; but today, including compilations from her 50,000 pages of manuscript, more than 100 titles are available in English. She is the most translated woman writer in the entire history of literature, and the most translated American author of either gender. Her writings cover a broad range of subjects, including religion, education, social relationships, evangelism, prophecy, publishing, nutrition, and management. Her life-changing masterpiece on successful Christian living, Steps to Christ, has been published in more than 140 languages. Seventh-day Adventists believe that Mrs. White was more than a gifted writer; they believe she was appointed by God as a special messenger to draw the world's attention to the Holy Scriptures and help prepare people for Christ's second advent. From the time she was 17 years old until she died 70 years later, God gave her approximately 2,000 visions and dreams. The visions varied in length from less than a minute to nearly four hours. The knowledge and counsel received through these revelations she wrote out to be shared with others. Thus her special writings are accepted by Seventh-day Adventists as inspired, and their exceptional quality is recognized even by casual readers. As stated in Seventh-day Adventists Believe ... , “The writings of Ellen White are not a substitute for Scripture. They cannot be placed on the same level. The Holy Scriptures stand alone, the unique standard by which her and all other writings must be judged and to which they must be subject” (Seventh-day Adventists Believe ... , Ministerial Association, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, Washington D.C., 1988, p. 227). Yet, as Ellen White herself noted, “The fact that God has revealed His will to men through His Word, has not rendered needless the continued presence and guiding of the Holy Spirit. On the contrary, the Spirit was promised by our Saviour to open the Word to His servants, to illuminate and apply its teachings” (The Great Controversy, p. vii). The following is a more detailed account of the life and work of this remarkable woman who, meeting all the tests of a true prophet as set forth in the Holy Scriptures, helped found the Seventh-day Adventist church.
This is a compilation of Ellen G. White's writing excerpts on prayer. Prayer is our "channel of communication" with God. "God speaks through His Word; we respond to Him through our prayers." (p. 3) Some of my favorite chapters are The Prayer of Faith, Prayer Power, Answered Prayer, Men and Women of Prayer, and The Lord's Prayer. This is an inspirational book.
The Lord has truly used this book to teach me how to pray. This was a lengthy book but great to start the day chapter at a time. If you're deciding to get this book, take my advice and GET IT!
This book has improved my prayer life and had me really evaluate it to see how I could refine it further. The book is a compilation of references from her other books, which makes me realize I definitely need to read more of her books and especially need to revisit Steps to Christ. Ultimately, if Jesus prayed for the Father's strength and blessings, and He was the Son of God, then shouldn't we?
Some timeless writing by Ellen G White on the subject of Prayer. This is a compilation of her many writings which can present its challenges as you are receiving snippets rather than a chapter dedicated to providing a narrative of each topic. My favorites covered daily prayer, intercessory prayer, and answered prayers. These all stayed with me because of their insight into our role as those who pray to an almighty God who hears us.
Overall, recommend this reading for anyone wanting a topical perspective on prayer by EGW but if you are looking for more like a narrative then look elsewhere.
Prayer--this compilation of writings ont he subject of prayer by Ellen G. White is really beautiful. One of my frequent reads and one of the very few compilations I actually love and own.
Step a little closer to Jesus as he prays us and for us, and see how a closer connection to our Heavenly home is just a whisper away.
I usually am not a,fan of books by this author that are compilations of quotes taken from articles and books published previously. However this is an excellent exploration of why prayer is so critical to the life of the Christian. Certainly after reading this book I am more resolved to committing more time to personal, "in the closet" prayer.
This book helped me in the most difficult times of my life I was a source of blessing to me, I could understand more how should I reach God right through prayer a important key to open the doors of heaven ..
I am inspired by this book daily. Prayer is heaven's ordained means of success in the conflict with sin and the development of Christian character. The divine influences that come in answer to the prayer of faith will accomplish in the soul of the suppliant all for which he pleads. For the pardon of sin, for the Holy Spirit, for a Christlike temper, for wisdom and strength to do His work, for any gift He has promised, we may ask; and the promise is, “Ye shall receive
