“THE BUTTON” part one! The cataclysmic events of DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1 continue here! The Dark Knight and The Fastest Man Alive, the two greatest detectives on any world, unite to explore the mystery behind a certain blood-stained smiley button embedded in the Batcave wall. What starts as a simple investigation turns deadly when the secrets of the button prove irresistible to an unwelcome third party—and it’s not who anyone suspects! It’s a mystery woven through time, and the ticking clock starts here!
This is the prelude to Doomsday Clock. It feels to me like they intend to include Watchmen world into DC universe, but is it for that story only or is it permanently? Also at the time was this supposed to be a secret project, tease the fans with the comedian's smiley face? Because they thank Geoff Johns and Joshua Williamson and did not thank Alan Moore! I saw god. Did he mean he saw Dr. Manhattan?
Batman #21 is a delight to read in so many levels. I am absolutely entertained reading this issue, in fact the second best that I have read in DCs Rebirth era (next to Geoff Johns' DC Universe Rebirth). So before I go to my spoiler-filled review, let me just say again that this is a must-buy for everybody who loves comics.
To fully enjoy this issue and the whole DC Rebirth thing, it is imperative that you have already read Watchmen (and perhaps Before Watchmen's Dr. Manhattan) and Flashpoint because there are many elements that give reference to those two materials. Tom King's 9-panel layout is a nod to Alan Moore's work, melding symmetry and parallelism in each beautifully drawn box. And DC gave the honor of drawing the pages of issue #21 to Jason Fabok, a dude who is so familiar with Batman (Batman Eternal, Detective Comics).
Batman issue 21 is the first of four parts.
Although not much has been revealed to the readers, the little things that have happened in this issue, which by the way happened mostly in the cramped space of the Batcave are nothing less than awesome. Perhaps the most significant thing that we have learned is (again spoiler alert) that the Button can act as a channel which can tap into the speed force and eventually see this "god" thing. Even Reverse Flash didn't stand a chance against this god, or should I assume, Dr. Manhattan. So the Button's a sort of portal and that I believe is a key element in this Rebirth-Watchmen story.
I also love the 24-esque style of narrative device to emphasize the concept of time for speedsters, where everything happens very fast. This and the overly amazing and bloody mano-a-mano fight between Reverse Flash and Batman is worth every cent you have paid for this issue.
Batman issue 21 is the first of four parts. I don't complain if it scarcely revealed anything. If the DC Rebirth story is as good as this, then the writers and creative teams have all the time in the world.
I have my hesitations about this event. I haven't even looked much into it because I just can't be bothered. I was just hoping I wouldn't have to read anything but this main Bat title to get through it. BUT, it was super great getting to see Batman take on a speedster. This issue ended up being pretty fun, set up a big event that I know most are excited for and had a great ending.
(ALERTA, SPOILERS) Me gustó mucho el hecho de que Flash y Batman se encontraran y revivieran -sin querer- a Eobard Thawne y fueran al pasado y se encontraran al padre (en Flashpoint) de Bruce.
☆☆☆5 stars☆☆☆ Wow!! What a great deal of action I got in this issue. You know what? Don't know why whenever Batman gets hits, I enjoy double even though I love his personality. Hehehe... This issue has bloody fights. Just the type I love. Can't wait to read the next issues of this story arc.
Coming off of the awesome Batman vs Bane story, I am excited for The Button. The build up to the arrival of of spoiler seemed kind of, umm, boring, I guess, but it was totally worth it. The rest of the issue goes a hundred mph. I was kind of sad when I got to the end on my Kindle. Aww, that's the end?! I'm definitely buying The Flash next week. This Batman/The Flash cross-over is going to kick ass. The build up to the arrival of spoiler kind of felt, um, boring, I guess, but it was totally worth it. This Batm
Two surprising, "holy crap!" moments and not much else. Two page spreads of people slugging it out is weak storytelling in my book. Really hoping that DC isn't trying to milk this and have it end up being a non-event instead. I went from excitement to boredom with the flip of a page.
Awesome start for The Button!! Great action and the story look promising with a past/present father/son kind of thing. The duo Flash/Batman also look promising! Going in #22 right now!
So good, and so many nods to Watchmen. From the nine panel layout all the way to the blue aura after the Reverse- Flash saw, "God", it was just too much for this Watchmen fanboy to take!
What a disappointed... It's the first part of The Button crossover between Batman and The Flash that also supposed to reveal more about DC Rebirth thing (for those, who don't know, instead of having a separate mini-series, this time we have our Flashpoint-like thing built in inside different comics). And guess what? They screwed it up. I mean... really? You killed Watchmen just to make Eobard Thawne to say that he saw a god and die again? Really?
Seriously, it looks like DC is totally out of ideas now. No idea what to do with The New 52? Make another "Flashpoint". No idea how to write a proper story for Dr. Manhattan in DC Rebirth? Make Eobard Thawne to appear again... As usual with current run of Batman, artwork is still good, but honestly, the whole development looks and feels pathetic. Watchmen didn't deserve to be ruined for this.
Batman #21 gets “The Button” off to a tremendous start, as despite there being minimal development to the main narrative, it gives us a spectacular encounter between the Caped Crusader and the Reverse Flash. It also ends in surprising fashion, leaving us guessing what will happen next and how the button fits into things.
Amazing story and artwork. Not much has happened yet but the short fight between Batman and Reverse Flash feels like just a small tease as to what might be coming soon in the later issues. I love how this issue feels like Watchmen in its art and how badass both characters are. Sure, Batman gets beaten to a pulp but he does so in style and RF is just savage. Can't wait to read on.
The two writers have done what they could to begin a set up for the upcoming series. In th end the each had to make a stretch. Being the completist, as I am, I wanted to read these as they are both a part of series I am following. The story is not bad, but it’s just one very small piece in a much larger whole and if you don’t read the whole, there is not much to this.
Interesting story of the watchmen button appearing in Batman universe. I can't wait to read next chapter to find out how it is in their universe and how or why reverse flash got killed. Entertaining story and art of Batman (2016-).
