Richard Allen "Dick" Lupoff (born February 21, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American science fiction and mystery author, who has also written humor, satire, non-fiction and reviews. In addition to his two dozen novels and more than 40 short stories, he has also edited science-fantasy anthologies. He is an expert on the writing of Edgar Rice Burroughs and has an equally strong interest in H. P. Lovecraft. Before becoming a full-time writer in 1970 he worked in the computer industry.
280515: this is a historical document (1973) about even older work (1912ish). an academic might feel it necessary to justify value of critical investigation of this sort of popular fiction, but if you want to evaluate according to impact in art, well, they just made a movie out of the start of this series. and it was all too familiar- too much had been used in degraded descendants and hollywood blockbusters like star wars. and this makes the 'barsoom' creation of burroughs make sense. the man wrote out his dreams! you can interpret his work in many deconstruction ways but the key seems to be: he was a dreamer, he was himself the readership intended, he started with striking gold individually, naively, and only later became industrial... makes me even want to read his first book again!
