SUSAN SLEEMAN is the bestselling author of over sixty romantic suspense and mystery novels with more than two million books sold. She writes romantic suspense novels that are clean with inspiring messages of faith. Readers love her series for the well-drawn characters and edge-of-your-seat action. She graduated from the FBI and local police citizen academies, so her research is spot-on and her characters are real.
In addition to writing, Susan also hosts The Suspense Zone. She has lived in nine states but now calls Oregon home. Her husband is a retired church music director, and they have two beautiful daughters, two special sons-in-law, and four amazing grandsons
Susan Sleeman, a huge favorite, starts a new series with this book. This is the story of the McKade family in Texas, all of them in law enforcement to some degree. This book focuses on Gavin, the eldest son, who has suffered a great blow, has a falling out with his sheriff father and leaves town to join the FBI. He also leaves his best girl, Lexie, and her young brother. Lexie can't get over this and carries the hurt in her heart always.
Then Lexie's mostly absentee and unloving father tells her he needs to meet her on a deserted plane runway. She goes and what she sees is life changing. She had asked Gavin for his help with this. Their lives then take a huge turn for the worse.
Both Gavin and Lexie are dealing with hurt and unforgiveness, both are miserable. Will they allow God to mend the broken places and allow Him to shine His love on their hearts?
Susan Sleeman once again cements her position as suspense queen of Christian fiction. She hits the ground running and the action never lets up till the very end. I am a forever fan!
*Thanks to the publisher and author for a preview copy of this book. My opinion is entirely my own and honest.
Squuueeeeallll!!!!! A new series from one of my favourite LIS authors!!!!!! And it's focused around a family of law enforcers. In Texas! Take a look at that cover! Only I want to know why the hero is riding away from me. Yoohoo -- Gavin, I'm over here! Damsel in distress! Heeeelllppp!!!! Sigh. He's ignoring me. Probably because it's taking all his concentration to keep tabs on the love of his life.
Lexie's in terrible danger and Gavin's sure he's the only one who can keep her safe. He might be a little biased about that. And a whole lot controlling, but you've gotta love a hero with deep issues who wears his heart on his sleeve. Insert swoon emoji here.
For her part, Lexie is so over Gavin. (Not!) She's still nursing hurt feelings and is fiercely protective of her teen brother so there's no way Gavin is going to get past her defenses this time. And my, but it was fun to watch him do exactly that. Lots of sparks flying along with bullets in this heart-in-throat romantic suspense!
HOLIDAY SECRETS by Ms. Sleeman is the beginning of a new series. Set in Texas, the law enforcement is just as rural as the ones in my state. Laid back, ranchers, southern drawl.
It started with a literal bang, and the tension didn't let up. Who is behind the death of Dr. Grant? Why is Lexie being threatened? I couldn't figure this suspense out (and I usually can). I couldn't even make an educated guess.
If you like Texas cowboys and law enforcement, this book has the flavor down pat. You won't be disappointed by this romantic suspense. Lots of twists and turns and of course, the black moment has you holding your breath and saying prayers.
I was given a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Lexie only wanted a place where she felt loved and wanted, instead she felt abandoned by people in her life. First, it was the death of her mom, then her father left without anyone’s knowledge whether he was dead or alive. Then finally, was Gavin, the one she thought would be there for the rest of her life, he walks away from his family and her. Gavin, who had his own issues of not meeting up to what his father expected. Of feeling guilty about his past. Made the only choice he felt he could make, but now he wonders if it was the best choice. Home and family are so important to both Lexie and Gavin, now they’re thrown into events where they need to depend on each other. Can they make it work or will things stay the same? Will they survive? This book by Susan Sleeman is packed with suspense and action. I was kept engaged from the very beginning to the very end. Wow! I also enjoyed getting to know the many McKade family members and hope to see them in other books. I truly enjoyed this book and hope you will too. I was given this book by the author for an honest review, all opinions are my own.
Much of this story was good. Loved the family interactions, often very realistic. However, what bothered me was that no one really wanted to talk about their differences, or hurts from the past.
The mystery suspense was not well put together in my opinion. The very first incident had a huge flaw. In order to have something explode with use of a phone as a trigger means something had to be planted on the object to explode. Nothing was mentioned as to how that item was planted, just that a plane landed and a phone detonated a bomb that came from thin air.
The storyline about Lexie holding a grudge because Gavin took a job in Houston and refused to have a long distance relationship with him got old and a bit eye-rolly.
The two bad-guy storyline was good though, but the maniacal character at the end was overdone and way eye-rolly.
This book just didn’t do it for me although it was highly rated by many. 🤔
HOLIDAY SECRETS (McKade Law # 1) is a page–turner from start to finish! Sleeman has long been a master of suspense writing and this book is no exception! Her characters are believable, relatable and complicated. The plot is excellent and will keep you searching for clues on each page. The ending is will take your breath away and is spectacular!
Susan Sleeman wastes no time sweeping her readers into the romantic suspense novels she writes. Holiday Secrets, book one of the McKade Law series, is such an example. From the opening sentence,"Lexie Grant's father had to pick today, of all days,to come back from the dead," the reader cannot help but be caught up in the taut action.
Now issues aplenty, the two main characters, Lexie Grant and Gavin McKade had almost reached the altar years earlier. Sleeman puts great emotions into her characters, causing the reader to hope, plot, and cheer as s(he) reads. I especially enjoy seeing the way Lexie and Gavin grapple with their problems and learn how to incorporate God's leading into them.
FBI, abandonment, Medicaid billing fraud, the syndicate, and reconciliation are all themes touched on in this exciting Susan Sleeman book. If romantic suspense is your genre, you won't want to miss this first book of the new McKade Law series, Holiday Secrets.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a review, positive or negative.
When Susan Sleeman starts a new series, I'm totally IN! This one is set in Texas and involves the McKade family who are all in some sort of law enforcement. We meet all of the siblings in this book but the oldest, Gavin, is front and center. It seems he has had a falling out with his father who is the sheriff of their town so he's gone on to be a FBI agent in the big city. However, he comes back exclusively to work on a case involving his ex-girlfriend's father. He still loves Lexie Grant but he had to get away from his father so he left town. Lexie sees her father gunned down in front of her and she has no idea that he's part of a deadly syndicate. That's why Gavin is in town and together, along with Gavin's father, they have to figure out, not only who killed Lexie's father but who is trying to kill Lexie and her brother! There is a lot of action and a very surprising ending! Lexie will need to learn forgiveness as she works with Gavin, and so will her brother, Adam. Gavin's family is also wonderful - I really enjoyed all of them! I really liked this story and the characters. I look forward to the following books!
I received a copy of HOLIDAY SECRETS from the author, and I read it through immediately! I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the plot. The McKade family members are so protective and endearing that I wished I were part of their family. I can't wait to read more about them--I'm so glad this is a series!
As readers have come to expect from Sleeman, her latest combines solid suspense and enough twists to make things unpredictable. While there is romance involved, the main focus is certainly on the mystery, though it’s easy to become invested in the characters. The reader is plunged into the action from the start, and there is no shortage of tense situations. Lexie and Gavin are flawed, yet relatable characters.
Lexie Grant wasn’t quite sure what to expect when she went to meet her father, who recently came back into her life. She would never have anticipated being rescued from a gunman by her former boyfriend, FBI agent Gavin McKade. Gavin is investigating her father, and he needs to learn how much Lexie knows. She is hesitant to trust him, as he has let her down before. Can she count on him when her life depends on it? What exactly was her father involved in that has now made Lexie a target?
HOLIDAY SECRETS by Susan Sleeman is the first book in the McKade Law series. It’s the heart pounding story of Gavin McKade and Lexie Grant.
Dr. Grant was never much of a family man or one to take interest in his kids. He turned Lexie and Adam over to his sister-in-law, Ruth, to raise them. He was in and out of their lives sporadically. Lexie had always felt protective and motherly to her younger brother Adam doing anything to keep him happy and loved.
FBI Special Agent, Gavin McKade had arranged to meet with Lexi, who he once was romantically involved with, to ask questions about her father since he had become a major person on interest in a health-care fraud investigation. Just before he arrived he heard gunshots and heard an explosion. He feared for Lexi and rushed to the airstrip where he found Lexie administrating CPR to her father who had suffered a major gunshot wound to the chest. The killer had been riding a motorcycle and was unidentifiable due to his heavily tinted visor on his helmet. He had grabbed the envelope that Dr. Grant had said contained “insurance” for Lexi’s safety and blew up the doctor’s plane via his phone before speeding off just prior to Gavin’s arrival.
Gavin has a strained relationship with his Dad, Lake County Sheriff Watt McCade. He hadn’t been home in some time and was hoping with it being the holidays that things would go smoother this time. There is the initial conflict of who was in charge of this murder investigation, but in the end they realize they are working for the same goal. This are big fish to catch – a syndicate, possible drug connected, to bring down and the safety of Lexi and Adam to consider.
Lexi doesn’t want to be controlled by anyone and feels she can take care of her brother and herself. However, she is smart enough to see the seriousness of the situation and must do all in her power to protect her brother – even if that means working with her ex, moving in one of the Trials End cabins on McCade property, and putting all the hurt from the past in the past.
The McKade Law is RISKING EVERYTHING FOR LOVE AND THE LAW. Can Gavin found out who this killer is before he strikes again and Lexi gets hurt? Can he risk his heart to remember his past with Lexi and to dream about a future with her? Lexi is determined to not repeat the same mistakes, but does her heart have a mind of its own? Will she keep her brother safe by all means – even if it endangers her own?
Susan Sleeman touched all the basis with HOLIDAY SECRETS. The edge of your seat events will keep you turning pages. The romance is sweet and toe curling – even if it takes twice to get there. She has you loving Lexie and Gavin, but will also have you wanting to give them a good shake a time or two. It’s heartwarming when she shows that even if you disagree and argue from time to time, your family will always love you and have your back. Throw in that it all takes place around Christmas and the story has a Christian feel and you have one wonderful story! The gorgeous cover speaks volumes about a Texas cowboy returning home to find answers and his love of the land.
I highly recommend HOLIDAY SECRETS to anyone that loves a wonderful well written story that will leave you with a smile on your face and hope in your heart. I can’t wait to read the second book in this series.
This is the first of the McKade Law books and I have to say that I believe I am a fan! Gavin McKade left his hometown to become an FBI agent. His whole family is in law enforcement but he and his father have never seen eye to eye and after Gavin accidentally shot someone he knew he could no longer work under his father. But now Gavin's first lead case has led him back home to the doorstep of the woman he left and will always love!
Lexie is not happy about Gavin's return. It was hard enough to have her father abandon she and her brother, but when Gavin left it tore her heart out and damaged her faith. Unfortunately seeing her father killed in front of her has put Lexie in danger and Gavin feels he is the only one that can protect her.
I have to admit that the dedication page touched me the most. It said,
"For all the families waiting for their prodigal son or daughter to return home."
As one of those parents who has watched their daughter walk away from her faith it always helps to read stories, real or fictionalized, that speak of God's returning one of those prodigal's.
I always love the element of faith that this author puts into her books. It is not preachy, yet it shows that our Father does not abandon His own and will return them with a much stronger faith than they had before.
Gavin and Lexie's relationship is pretty rocky and they both build walls to protect their hearts, but those walls slowly crumble as they both learn to forgive those that have hurt them.
The suspense was great in this book as has come to be expected from this author. I like all of the McKade's and look forward to reading their stories!
Danger, suspense, an unknown killer on the loose, heart-pounding scenes, romantic tension, and Texas all combine to make Susan Sleeman the kind of author you can associate with un-put-downable fiction at it's best! Even better, the start of a new series surrounding a passel of law enforcement family members. Beginning with older brother Gavin McKade, now a top notch FBI agent only back in town to investigate a fraud case. With who other than Lexie Grant's dad! Having a history together, she's none to keen on running into him again after he broke her heart three years before. There's your romantic tension and the reason Gavin's back in her life, at least temporarily. These two have lots to overcome in the past and outrun a killer in the present....can he keep her safe with both her life and his heart? You'll have to read it for yourself to find out!
Reunion stories are my favorite because there's so much for the couple to work through to have that happily-ever-after ending. It adds extra conflict & tension, plus since this is a suspense novel, danger to the mix. You'll find lots of that in this book! Getting to know the McKade family was an added bonus and I'm looking forward to seeing them in the next installments. A great start to a series I can already tell is going to be explosive!
*I received a complimentary copy from the author and I was under no obligation to leave a favorable review. *
This is the beginning of a new series by Ms Sleeman. A series about a law enforcement family and their lives. This one gives us Gavin McKade and Lexie Grant. Prior to leaving town, Gavin was deputy and his Dad the sheriff. The two never saw eye to eye and Gavin, and after an incident that deeply affected Gavin, he decided to leave and become an FBI agent far away from his hometown. Lexie chose to stay in town but never forgave him for leaving her and her young brother. Now he’s back to investigate Lexie’s father, but arrives right after Dr Grant was killed in front of Lexie. Though the story is about what exactly Dr Grant was involved in, it’s really about family dynamics, about how the relationships between sons and fathers are not always easy. The parent’s expectations and those of the son clash, sometimes because they are so much alike. The author also delves on how feelings of abandonment can hinder a relationship to the extend that for fear of being hurt all over again, one might not give it a second chance. In the midst of all this angst, the suspense keeps you wondering what’s going to happen next and in the end, will Lexie , Gavin and his Dad find peace, faith in God , acceptance and love. Looking forward to future stories in this series. I was gifted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Holiday Secrets. This is the first book in the McKade Law Series. I loved this series and can't wait until the next book to come out. I really enjoy Susan's writing and this one is exceptional; it is well written, action packed and full of intrigue. I know you are going to love it.
FBI Agent Gavin McKade comes home for an investigation into a drug ring. The homecoming isn't what one might think as he is force to work with his stubborn ex-boss, his father. They still don't see eye to eye on much of anything but they both agree that Gavin's ex is in trouble and they must do everything possible to get her out of this mess.
Lexi Grant meets her estranged father at the air field only to see him shot and his plane blown up. Lexi is a witness and her father tells her that a syndicate is after before he dies. Gavin, her ex, rides up and scares the shooter off but he comes back. Lexi isn't big on trust and how do you trust a man who ran off and left her.
A journey of two broken hearts that still beat for each other. Are the same circumstance that drove them apart before going to keep them a part now? Can they find the answers to their questions and catch the killers? God has a plan for these two, a good plan and not for evil. God has a plan for you too. Trust Him, give Him your heart, and watch Him turn your mess around.
Holiday Secrets is book 1 in the McKade Law series. Gavin McKade grew up in a law enforcement family. After having issues with his father – the county sheriff – Gavin moved to Houston and got a job with the FBI. When a case involving fraud brings him back to his hometown to investigate a local doctor who happens to be the father if his former girlfriend, Gavin has to deal with both his strained relationship with his father and the woman he had not quite gotten over.
After disappearing and being thought to be dead, Lexie Grant’s father called her and asked to meet. While they were talking a man on a motorcycle drove up and shot her dad. Lexie was able to hide and heard the shooter threaten to harm her. Thankfully, after hearing Gavin riding up on his horse, the shooter sped off before trying to look for Lexie.
While trying to find the killer, unravel the fraud case, and keep Lexie and her brother safe after multiple attempts to harm them, both Gavin and Lexie have to work through their feelings for each other, past issues with their fathers, and struggles with trusting God as a loving Heavenly Father.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books about the McKade family.
*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.
Gavin, an FBI agent, is in town to see his ex-girlfriend, Lexie, about a case he's working on. Unfortunately for both of them it involves her father. When things go south, Gavin is forced to work with his bull headed father, a sheriff, if either of them have a hope of solving who is out to kill Lexie.
This author writes a dramatic and suspenseful novel. The plot starts out with shooting, intrigue, and drama. Explosions, murder, and horses all mix together to create a cowboy style romance that is full of tense moments and sweet encounters. This is the first book in a new series by the author and she's definitely set the stage well. I loved the chemestry between the two main characters. I also liked how she portrayed a flawed, but loving family. The message of faith is subtly woven throughout the story, creating a seamless message of hope and forgiveness during difficult times. The secondary characters all had depth and their own personalities, so it's easy to see how this can become a series with everyone playing a part. I can't wait to see who the next main character is going to be.
I received a copy of this book. All thoughts expressed are my own.
Holiday Secrets by Susan Sleeman is book number one in her McKade Law series. Lexie Grant is the target of a ruthless syndicate. Riding to her rescue is FBI agent Gavin McKade. He must trust his family to help him watch over Lexie and her younger brother, Adam. But, Lexie is having a hard time letting Gavin back into her life, due to their previous history. Can Gavin keep Lexie safe or will this be their last Christmas alive? Wow! This story starts off with an explosive bang and never lets up. I loved how Lexie and Gavin had to work through their respective difficulties. They finally allowed God to really take control of their lives and then they were able to enjoy His sweet peace. The McKade ranch sounded like such a peaceful place to be. Susan really brought it to life for me. I’d love to spend a Christmas with them and their horses! What a great edge-of-your seat beginning to the series and the plot twist at the end is one that I never saw coming. I can’t wait for the rest of the McKade saga to continue. Way to go Susan!
I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.
Holiday Secrets is the first in a new series by Susan Sleaman. Wow. I love how the author starts the action in the first few pages and keeps reading at a fast pace throughout. I finished this book in two sittings because I didn’t want to put it down. This book is different from the others she writes. I enjoy the variety that the author gives in all her series. They are not cookie cutter but instead they are each books that can be read separately or together. I fall in love with the characters and don’t want to miss out on any of the adventures so I advise reading them together. This book struck a chord with me. I loved the theme of forgiveness interwoven throughout; while not preachy, it was timely. Our church just finished a sermon series about forgiveness and this book was a great followup to that. I can’t wait to read more about the McKade family. Ms. Sleaman writes feminine, yet strong women characters and biblical leading male characters. These are people I would want to hang out with in life. While I don’t know who the author will focus on next, I know I don’t want to miss it. The ending for Holiday Secrets was awesome – totally unexpected but yet so believable.
I received this book from my best friend's grandma. She reads a ton of these all the time, but I view these books as "the same." I felt like writing these books required little to no brain power, likewise with the reading of them.
Sleeman quickly made me realize that even though these are mass-marketed paperbacks, they still pack a punch with the story development, or, at least Sleeman does.
The McKade family resides in Texas. Gavin has a fight with his father and can't bear to be on the same squad as him, so he makes the big decision to leave town.
In doing so, he left behind Lexi and her younger brother, Adam. Lexi is having a hard time forgiving Gavin for abandoning her when she felt as if she gave him her all and trusted him for him to just throw it away like it was nothing.
One day, Lexi gets a call from her distant father telling her he needs to meet with her. When she shows up, major things happen and it gets ugly quick.
With the help of Gavin, Lexi goes on a wild ride to chase down a killer who may be coming for her and her brother next.
Susan Sleeman is one of my favorite authors. You know, the ones that lure you in on their name alone because you have read and enjoyed every one of their books you've read. That is Susan Sleeman to me. She does it again. Holiday Secrets (McKade's Law #1) gets you from the front cover to the last page. The characters draw you in and make them a part of your family or makes you want to be part of their family. You make an investment in the story. It runs the gamut of emotions and situations. You don't see what is coming. Expect to spend an enjoyable time with this one. I had a hard time putting it down.
I received this book from the author for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. My favorite LIS author doesn’t fail to keep you engrossed in her newest book Holiday Secrets. This is the first book in the new McKade Law series. Gavin has left behind family and the love of his life because of guilt and Lexie feels like she is unlovable and rejected. Due to a murder and unforeseen circumstances they are thrown back together and the ride is full of suspense and intrigue. The characters grow in their faith and trust as the book progresses. Some parts are edge of your seat and difficult to figure out, which makes for a good read curled up in a blanket. I love the family concept and cannot wait to find out more about these members in future installments. Great read. I received a complimentary copy from the author. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
I really enjoyed this book. The suspense and action were intense from the beginning of the book and after that it never really slowed down. I loved the McKade family, they all work in law enforcement. The family all care for one another. Lexie is a strong heroine. Her mother died, and her dad didn’t spend much time with her or her brother. It was up to Lexie to raise her kid brother. She got her heart broke when her boyfriend Gavin moved away. He came back for a case he was working with the FBI. Throughout the case he realized he still cared for Lexie. Can Gavin and his family solve the case before the killer ends Lexie’s life? The ending of the book had me holding my breathe not sure how it would all play out. I loved the action, and suspense. I’m also a sucker for second chance love stories. Excellent book!
Meet the McKade family. A group of people dedicated to upholding the law.
Unfortunately, that dedication has caused some rifts. FBI Agent Gavin McKade left his Texas hometown after a disagreement with his father—one that resulted in someone else getting hurt. Now he’s returned to get information from the woman he left behind. When Lexie Grant is noticed by members of a syndicate out to destroy all evidence of their involvement, Gavin will protect her at all costs, even if that means working with his father again.
With many suspects, lots of twists and turns, and plenty of unresolved tension between Lexie and Gavin (not to mention their families), Holiday Secrets had me speeding to the end in order to unwrap all the mysteries.
I’m already looking forward to the next installment reading more about the McKade siblings.

I can always count on Susan Sleeman to pull me quickly into her story and keep me enthralled, and this book is no exception. The action starts quickly and doesn't let up until the end, and the many twists and turns add excitement and surprise. I can also count on a creative plot and vivid characters. The main characters, Gavin McKade and Lexie Grant, are multi-layered and engaging, although they each have their flaws and problems to overcome. I love the faith elements that the author weaves seamlessly into the story. Holiday Secrets is the first book in a new series that promises loads of suspense and intrigue. I'm looking forward to the other books in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I love this new cast of characters for this series! They are incredibly well developed. I’m really looking forward to learning more about the McKade family as the series progresses.
Both Lexie and Gavin are burdened down from past wounds. I wanted so badly to see them each let go of the pain and move on with their lives. They needed to learn how to forgive and trust God.
The plot really kept me guessing. I was completely amazed when the truth was revealed.
I received a free copy of this book from the author. I have chosen to write this review to express my personal opinion.
I know when I see a book by Susan Sleeman that its going to be good. Holiday Secrets was no exception. It was amazingly written, with great characters, and nasty bad guys you just loves to hate. Gavin McKade had to leave his town, his family, his job as a deputy and Lexie Grant when he unintentionally injured an innocent victim. Since then, the FBI agent has been on the brink of paranoia when it comes to his job and keeping people safe. This is a story about reconciling for things of the past and forgiveness. Most importantly, God's forgiveness which He bestows upon us even though we definitely do not deserve it.
Gavin is now FBI because he left town when he and his father could not get along at work. His Dad is the Sheriff and Gavin used to be his deputy.
Lexie used to be his girlfriend and she did not leave town with him. Now he is back in town, he wanted to talk to her. She goes to meet him at the airstrip and her Dad shows up. Someone murders him in front of Lexie but she doesn't see him because it is dark and he is wearing a shield over his face.
Gavin and Lexie are trying to solve his murder and keep the guy from coming after Lexie because he told her Dad that he was gonna kill her if he didn't get the info she wanted.
Family of law enforcement, love this family. Gavin the eldest Mckade was struggling with working with his father, so he left home moved to Houston and because an FBI agent. Now he is back home investigating the father of the woman he was to marry. Lexie was also dealing with abandonment issues with her father and Gavin, now someone has killed her father and they are coming after her. I was totally shocked by who the villain was, this book has murder, kidnapping, and a God Fearing family. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
I'm a big Susan Sleeman fan. I just love her writing style. Add in hunky cowboys, who work as law enforcement, and I'm hooked. Holiday Secrets didn't disappoint. I shed a few tears, but I also laughed. The sad parts didn't last long, and the happy sections kept me smiling for pages. Moody Adam made it seem exceptionally real (from a mom of occasionally moody teens). The end was surprising, as it should be.
I received this book free from the author/publisher. The above is my honest review.
