Completely ridiculous, unbelievable plot with unconvincing characters.

The ex is a Catholic priest (and cardboard villain) yet they were living together for a number of years and had a shared bank account, though no-one could know they knew each other! - and he dreamed of revealing their relationship. So lets completely forget his vows and role in the community then huh? Church property, congregation visits...
And he refers to him by his surname, this lover he's grown up with.
I had concerns about the religious angle but here it was too poorly executed to matter.

When I left it Casey was 'smartening up' his rough new host. Whose disclosed he was picked on for not seeming smart enought. Which showed an incredible lack of insight and depth on his part. I skimmed further and imo it just got worse.

And why does everyone have stale breath and appear rank?

Didn't believe in or care about any character.
Very much not an author for me.

Casey is devastated....thrown out of his house by his own boyfriend....f* McDermott
Left to live....where...? On the streets..!
Casey a young man with a very low self esteem. Bullied at school and dismissed by life...thinks everything that comes out of his 'boyfriend' his mouth is the truth.... and oh..boy is he wrong....

Desperate and deeply sad he tries to find a shelter because he has nothing.. not a penny....

He sees an advertising : WANTED -ROOMMATE -FARM HOUSE -FOREST HILLS -
DISCOUNT ON RENT WITH HELP. $ 450/ MONTH.

When the doors opened by Hunter an intimidating man completely covered in dust...Casey is to desperate to mind.

Hard working he earns his place in the farm house.

Hunter is not an ordinary man. He is grumpy, rude....uses few words and give a shit about others opinions....except the ones from Casey.
Casey is very vulnerable and is trying so hard not to drown by life. He is learning from Hunter and his stand in life....
When there is a school reunion organized he wants to go...and Hunter goes with him as his 'boyfriend' not in real life but only for this occasion.

Casey has so much feelings for Hunter but will never confess this, he don't want to lose him as friend, or thrown out again.

Through this journey we get to know Casey and what happened to him while growing up and living with McDermott. We also get a peak into Hunter being.

Written in an entertaining way. There is a lot of hurt/comfort which I felt in my stomach.
Good developed personalities and the pace was steady. Feelings all over...Sometimes the story was a bit ott but not annoying. I really loved the way Casey and Hunter were put down....flawed and endearing.
Glad justice was on Casey's side...because....grrr...

3.5 stars, First book from this author. Book is about a high school boy who falls for a priest (not sure if he was a priest or not at the beginning), and ends up living a secret life with him for 4 years. The priest (boyfriend) treats him like trash, but Casey believes that their love (first love) is real and looks past the bad treatment, until he comes home and finds he is locked out of his house where all his belongings are. He searches for a job and ends up out of town on a farm where he worms his way into Hunter's life. Hunter is also suffering from a broken heart and has stopped caring for himself and his house/farm. Casey talks his way into trading cleaning, cooking and whatever services to stay there and they develop a friendship. Weeks after, he runs into his ex and is continually ridiculed about how he is nothing but a loser and Casey lies and states he is dating Hunter. The priest gets jealous and continues to cut down Hunter and Casey. Casey decides the best way to get him back, is show up at their class reunion with Hunter as a date. Hunter agrees even though one of his rules is not to lie, but is Hunter lying about his true feelings for Casey?

Anyway, it is a sweet book and a quick read. This is the first from this author and I would try another one to see...

Ehh

Although the premise was good, it lacked a bit 8n execution. I think there was maybe a bit too much filler and not enough real content for a reader to feel the emotions of the characters.

This was such a good read! Although a shorter book than I usually like, I was pulled into the story from the first page!
I really liked Casey, although maybe a little to trusting I loved his determination! The other main character Hunter, I fell in love with immediately. He'd had his heart broken also and was a bit of a recluse, not caring what people thought of him or his appearance. I adored his soft side and how he still recognised that Casey needed a friend! I guess this is a story of learning to be true to yourself.

It was a joy to read this book, the story line had a few emotional scenes but also humour and I found myself smiling constantly as the friendship builds between these two totally different men.

What I really like about Jamie Lake's writing is how easy it is to read in a down to earth type of way. The character development is superb so you quickly have perfect visuals very quickly. She also focuses on the story and doesn't draw out any sex scenes which I find much more to my taste.

This story had a really good ending and I'm not sure if another book is going to be available but now I have met these men I would love to see where they go from here!
Highly recommended!!

Though this odd little romance had some formatting issues and the occasional typo, I was entranced by Hunter and Casey. Casey was tossed out by his closeted lover of ten years, FATHER McDermott. McDermott is the lowest of scum. After spending a night on the street, in the cold, with no where to go, he finds an ad for a roommate wanted in a farmhouse. Hunter owns the farmhouse. Hunter reminded me of Lenny in Of Mice and Men but he has a very good heart. Through hard work and companionship, Casey begins to heal from his heartbreak and begins to have feelings for Hunter.... but Hunter is straight. Lovely book. Just needs a bit of editing.

Cute!

Story of an extremely naive young man who thought he was loved and cared for, but he was not. He is kicked out with just the clothes on his back. Then he applies for a room to rent and the owner treats him with more kindness and thoughtfulness than anyone. Hunter sounded like big ole teddy bear.

This could have been a really good book, instead it was just an ok book. I could put up with the fact that all the main characters were all kind of exaggerations of themselves. Casey was the flighty gay man who had been picked on all his life. He’s dumped by his first lover who is the epitome of a villain. He kicks Casey out, changes the locks, and won’t even let him get his things. Finally there’s Hunter. He’s the strong, straight, gorgeous man who takes Casey in and slowly falls in love with him.

The story was sweet, so what ruined it for me. It was the constant inner conflict that Casey was going through. It was so repetitive and boring that I found myself doing something I almost never do. I had to skim paragraph after paragraph to get to the story.

The audiobook version of Boyfriend for Rent by Jamie Lake was not as good as I’d hoped it would be.

Casey, an openly gay young man had secretly been dating Father McDermott, a Catholic priest for several years. Without warning, McDermott locks Casey out of his house.

Searching for a job, Casey answers an ad for a roommate in a farm house. The ad had been placed by Hunter, an older, grumpy country boy who doesn’t give a damn about other people’s opinions. At least that was the case until Hunter met Casey - and the two of them ran into McDermott.

The plot from that moment on was completely predictable.

Talbot’s narration on Boyfriend for Rent was not up to the his usual quality. Too often the voice inflection for McDermott was indistinguishable from Casey’s. The tonal quality used for Hunter’s voice was grating.

A sweet, sweet story. Nice boy meets nice, misunderstood man - who is straight. What's not to love? One small reproach, or perhaps two. There were repetitions in the text; reading about the novel itself I saw it was an expanded version of a shorter one, if I understand correctly. This may explain the repetitions. The other was - the way the main person's attitude changed. He was at times like a weather bane... but this did not detract from the charm of the story.

This was a surprisingly fast paced, good read. I started late last night and just finished this morning. I really liked Hunter. I especially loved the scene when they were on the couch drunk after they got home from dancing. McDermott was a bit too one -sided for me and I had a hard time reconciling that he was a priest as mean as he was to Casey. His actions for kicking Casey out with just the clothes on his back didn't make sense to me.

I like how the friendship/relationship progressed between Casey and Hunter. Now here are just a few niggles I had:

Overall I really did enjoy this story, more than I did The Backup Boyfriend.

I didn't like the whole thing of Casey "helping" Hunter show everyone how intelligent he was by "smartening up" his speech, the way he walked, etc. I thought it was insulting to Hunter and shallow of Casey. And it wasn't going to show anyone anything because the kind of assholes that gave both Hunter and Casey trouble when they were in school are just that...assholes. It was never really about how smart Hunter was, they were looking for something to pick on someone about and if it hadn't been that, it would have been something else.

At first I liked Casey but towards the end I felt a little like he was using Hunter. You don't tell someone you think they are perfect the way they are and then set about changing them so you can show others what a great "catch" you have made. I get that we want to see Casey and Hunter have their day and show everyone up but that is something that should come naturally in the story, not something that requires one character to change for another.

Ugh. I'm sure I'm taking it totally wrong, as usual.

Umm, This was quick in many ways. The story, the breakup, the new hookup, the plot, etc…. It was free to borrow on my kindle and this is the story I choose. I am glad I didn't pay for it. I don't feel jilted now because of that.

So, our main MC, had an asshole boyfriend(who is very deeply hidden), afraid to let ANYONE know his truth. But they are together for years only to dump our MC with nothing. Well he does try to offer him hush money. So our MC finds a place to 'work for rent' on a nearby farm. His new boss/roommate is this rough looking man(who is 'straight'). But really, he doesn't take very long to jump on the bromance bandwagon.

This story had potential but it was just thrown together so quickly, it made it bad for me. Plus some of the scenes really seemed unrealistic to me. But hey if you are looking for a quick read this would be it. But don't expect to walk away with fireworks flaring off in the background for awesomeness...

Enjoyable read - my first by this author. I appreciated the character development and the fact the main characters got to know each other and developed a friendship before the relationship turned sexual - not instalove! Both have been hurt before and neither character is perfect but see they are perfect for each other. This is a sweet story with a feel good ending! I look forward to reading more from this author.

3.5 stars. Quick, enjoyable romance. But lube and condoms!! The only real sex scene and that threw me right out of the story. Will try another of this authors work because I did like this one. :)

A love story at its finest!

Engaging story of learning to value yourself and acceptance. Great story and good writing makes this a wonderful read! I loved Hunter and Casey as they learned to be friends and how kind they were to each other. i started reading and could not put this book down.. just loved the pace and story. A love story at its finest!

Both men have been treated poorly by those that should have loved them and they both have scars and insecurities. Yet both me are gentle and nurturing and are just so sweet as people. Hunter is this amazing man who will do almost anything to ensure that Casey feels valued and appreciated. Casey is so good for Hunter and works with him to create a home for both of them. Friends and then more.. just a terrific story!

This book was ok for me. The story was kinda interesting with the whole undercover gay Priest. The ass that he was!! I liked the chemistry between the MCs but the story dragged a little for me. All the teasing and sexual frustration continued up until 97% of the book!!... until.....FINALLY....climax. I hoped that scene would have happened earlier on in the book and continued and developed more, many more times during the course of the story. LOL I wanted the MCs to experience many more sensual moments like that one and only time. I understand the point of the book. I'm only voicing what I needed from the story to make it an even better read. I do plan on reading more of this author's work.

This author is new to me and I thought the book was quite interesting. It is well-written but I could not connect with Casey at all. Casey has lived with a closeted boyfriend for years and when he is kicked out he doesn't have anywhere to go. Hunter takes him in and they become friends. Because Hunter is a sweetheart he agrees to pose as Casey's boyfriend but I didn't like the way Casey wants to change Hunter so he will look and act like a gentleman at Casey's high school reunion. I also wish there had been more secondary characters other than Casey's jerk of an ex. I would like to read more books in this series as the premise of this book was intriguing.
I was given an ARC to review by the author.

#mm #shortstory #gfy #friendstolovers

Casey was secretly dating a Priest and when the priest breaks up with him and kicks him out with nowhere to go and no money he finds a farmhouse with room for rent and asks to trade room for chores and luckily for him Hunter says yes for the short term. They get along and time passes. Casey tells Hunter he's gay and he says he doesn't mind but doesn't really share much more than that. so Casey assumes he's straight. They become good friends but after they run into Casey's ex and pretend to be together and the ex reminds them theres a school reunion they have to keep up their fake relationship. This is a very slow burn. A friends to lovers book and I really enjoyed it. Considering it's short length it didn't feel rushed or unfinished.

A story about a guy who is his then boyfriend's dirty little secret. His ex is an ass who masks as a man of God, which, in my opinion, makes him even worse than your usual closeted dick. Once the ex literally tosses the MC out with nothing to his name, the MC finds himself desperate. He meets a nice guy who puts him up in his house with nothing more owing except the agreement to do the cooking and cleaning. Even though the nice guy is 'straight', you kind of know where this is going. Not only do they fall in love and live happily ever after, but they also stick it to the D-Bag Preacher. It was a good story, but sort of predictable.

When one door closes, another opens

When Casey is booted out of the house by his ex with only the clothes on his back he has very few options. When he finds Hunter, he finds a man willing to have his back, in any situation. Finding a second chance at love for both, and finding themselves in the process. I have to admit I didn't like the start of the book, with the selfish priest taking advantage, but quickly grew to love Casey's spunk and Hunters honour. The fact that Hunter also kicked the ex's butt really helped. The ending left me smiling. A really nice M/M read.

So I bought this special edition, not really giving it much thought because I liked the premise of the book, and it was sweet and funny. Not completely realistic but I knew what I signed up for.
What irked me, wasn't the story, it was that the story was 50 % of the book and the rest is several other short stories which I was not prepared for.

So when it said The End suddenly, where I had thought there was plenty more of the story, it threw me off. The short stories are fine but it's not why I bought the book. My rating is because of this and not the story, the story I'd give 4 stars.

Wtf

Good story, right up until they decide to suddenly fuck without lube. After saying how massive the dudes cock was. After saying how the bottom hadn't had sex in months. (Not that you shouldn't use lube every time you have anal sex) A little realism about the way the human body works would b good.

This is my second time reading this and I liked it even more. Really loved McDouche getting his payback. I can imagine the fallout from the reunion. What I loved most was watching Casey and Hunter grow into friends and help each other overcome their insecurities.
