This collection of 52 favorite chapters represents the major themes from the works of A.W. Tozer. Each reveals deep, refreshing insight, conviction and originality of thought. From Let My people Go to The Pursuit of God, Tozer's books were always written after long hours of meditation and prayer. Perhaps this explains their wide circulation and lasting influence.
Aiden Wilson Tozer was an American evangelical pastor, speaker, writer, and editor. After coming to Christ at the age of seventeen, Tozer found his way into the Christian & Missionary Alliance denomination where he served for over forty years. In 1950, he was appointed by the denomination's General Council to be the editor of "The Alliance Witness" (now "Alliance Life").
Born into poverty in western Pennsylvania in 1897, Tozer died in May 1963 a self-educated man who had taught himself what he missed in high school and college due to his home situation. Though he wrote many books, two of them, "The Pursuit of God" and "The Knowledge of the Holy" are widely considered to be classics.
A.W. Tozer and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, had seven children, six boys and one girl.
The selections in this compilation are chock full of Christian gems and wisdom. Tozer offers words of conviction more than edification, shining a light on what the church does wrong more often than what it does right. And for the most part, I agree with what he wrote back in the '50s and '60s. Disagreeing was an exercise for me--deciding why I disagreed and finding the Scripture and logic to back up my stance.
But I drained my highlighter of its ink marking his words of wisdom. As an example, here's a quote that seems particularly appropriate to today's society:
"Our present preoccupation with this world may be a warning of bitter days to come. God will wean us from the earth some way--the easy way if possible, the hard way if necessary."
A hefty reminder that this world is not our home, and we shouldn't love it too much lest we play the role of Mrs. Lot when we're called away from it.
Kinda bite-sized but kinda heavy too. You cannot whizz through this book as though you are not forced to meditate on these words. You cannot simply read it once. You cannot simply look at it and drop it down as though it didn't push you into serious thought. It is a book worth reading. Grab your copy.
