This book is SO. TOTALLY. WEIRD!
So, obviously, I liked it. There's something endearingly foreign about it, being that it was translated from the Norwegian, and yet I could so clearly see it happening in the US that I had no real problems with plausibility.
It isn't a super-amazing-wow book, though, and I think the only reason I gave it four stars is because I just love Markus, Mons, and Sigmund so much. Like, who would EVER make them the three main characters of a book? They are so pitiful. I feel like Klaus Hagerup is a hero for choosing them to play the starring roles in his underdog of a book. High-five, Klaus.

Extremely funny about an extremely anxious boy.

A good children's book has to be authentic, well-paced, plausible and - to my preference - funny. And it should have unique characters.
This book has it all. It is extremely life-like, with very funny, charmingly awkward dialogue. It is well-paced and never drags. The characters are very different, very well thought-out and are just very nice. Marcus is a 12-year old boy, empathic and shy at the same time who is accompanied by his best friend Sigmund - not shy at all and somewhat lacking empathy. The dynamic between the boys and other characters is amazing and simply hilarious. Marcus's father has to be one of the sweetest characters I have ever seen in books.
I personally think that if there are no movies or a TV show based on this book, there should be made some.
And the reviews here on Goodreads - I do not understand why the reviews are so bad. This is literally one of the most intelligent, funny and kind children's books I've read.

Эту историю я проглотила на одном дыхании: забавная, легкая, на удивление непредсказуемая и при этом очень чувственная, заставляющая сопереживать даже едва обрисованным героям. И, лично для меня, очень необычная. По крайней мере, я не могла бы сравнить этот рассказ ни с одним ранее прочитанным.
Единственное, мне показалось, что не очень то и детская это литература. Думаю, особую прелесть она приобретает как раз когда читаешь ее в относительно взрослом возрасте. Хотя... Что сейчас читают в 13 лет? В общем, очень интересно было бы узнать мнение детей, подростков, прочитавших "Маркуса и Диану". А лично я детям эту повесть, пожалуй, не посоветовала бы.

Tweede boek gelezen in het Noors, maar eerste helemaal zelfstandig. Wel een geinig boek. Grappig geschreven. Kreeg nu een deel van de grapjes mee, maar er waren nog wel redelijk wat woorden onbekend, dus ik denk dat het nog een stuk grappiger is als je alles kunt volgen. Wel een typisch tienerboek waar je precies kunt voorspellen hoe een bepaalde situatie zo ongemakkelijk mogelijk gaat verlopen.

Цікава повість (?) для дітей віком 8-14 років, якраз у цьому віці я її читав. Звісно в українському перекладі) Тринадцятирічний герой, сором'язливий в житті, однак вільний і розкутий в паперових листах до різних відомих людей. І от один з листів започатковує досить цікаву історію, в яку можна й повірити і співпереживати протягом читання.

📜 Та все міняється, коли хлопчина пише листи відомим людям. Він видає себе то за мільйонера, то за відомого альпініста, то за стареньку кволу бабусю і робить це так переконливо, що отримує не лише автографи, а й листівки від селебріті.
✉️ Одного разу Маркус пише емоційного листа в Голівуд до норвезької акторки Діани Мортенсен, а незабаром отримує у відповідь повноцінного листа. Між цими двома зав'язується переписка, але все може зруйнуватися, коли Діана запрошує Маркуса на зустріч...
📜 Ця книга нагадала мені серіал про доктора Хауса, де брешуть усі, але з різних причин: хтось - бо має багату фантазію, хтось - щоб дещо приховати, а хтось - хоче видатися кращим, ніж є на справді.
🔴 А ще, ця історія схожа на "Антон та інші нещастя" Ґюдрун Скреттінґ із татом-одинаком та сином підлітком. Їхню родину важко назвати взірцевою, але разом їм добре та затишно. Взагалі, перечитавши чималенько підліткових скандинавів, помічаю багато подібного. От чомусь, три останні серії, які я прочитала, починаються саме із червоної обкладинки. Як думаєте, чому? Щоб привернути увагу чи попередити "ОБЕРЕЖНО!"?

Markus Simonsen is just like his father--he's scared of heights, the dark, and girls. Especially girls. He's scared of dogs and the wild and losing his father, since he already lost his mother. Markus is practically scared of the entire world. He doesn't have that many friends, except for Sigmund and his father.
Markus isn't the best at school or sports. He just isn't that great at anything. Well, except for writing notes to random celebrities. Disguising himself as someone else, Markus is the best at making up stories, causing celebrities to feel bad for the character he becomes that week, bad enough to where they send him a personally autographed picture.
Who's his next celebrity victim? Well, it is none other then the very beautiful Diana Mortensen. With the correct address, Markus is now ready to become the millionaire who understands the crazy world of fame and all the ups and downs that it brings with it. But Diana is different from all the other celebrities. She writes back, but so do the others. Except Diana's letter actually has deep feelings written all over it. She actually expresses what she truly feels. But the only thing is, those feelings are for Markus Simonsen, the millionaire, not Markus Simonsen, the intimidated kid.
Markus's world is the funniest I have ever come upon. The adventures of Markus in MARKUS + DIANA is rightfully hilarious and just screams "MAKE ME INTO A MOVIE!" Klaus Hagerup creates a character that is not only humorous but also imaginative. He inspires others to be creative, to think outside the box, and to not be scared of the places that your imagination takes you. MARKUS + DIANA is a great read and is perfect for when you need a nice, long laugh.

YA novel from Norwegian writer, stage director. Markus is a motherless boy and class nerd, but has a friend in Sigmund a much savvier classmate. Together Markus and Sigmund form a fan club for Diana. Markus writes letters pretending to be an adult and Diana responds. Lighthearted story about growing up.

Huumori iski kympillä, vaikka Markuksen epäonnisuus hiukan tuntui jämähtäneeltä. Aina kaikki oli Markusta vastaan. Mutta loppua kohti kirja parani ja nauroin ääneen.
