Robotech #1

Rate this book
Not just another retelling of the Macross saga ... In July, the story continues as we bring Carl Macek's original vision full circle. Taking into account every iteration of the series, this new Robotech #1 casts a fresh eye over classic characters like Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, Lynn Minmei, Roy Fokker, Claudia Grant, and Henry Gloval. Brian Wood and Marco Turini take us back to a Macross Island where *nothing* can be taken for granted.

Well, well, well. Comixology was just full of surprises last week.

Okay, Issue #1.

I like the new take. The art is really well done. The characters look like adults in contrast to their more youthful appearance in the anime (which I loved by the way). And dammit, THIS is the Min Mei I always wanted to see. Not that whiny self-centered brat, but a young woman who, when she says she a wants to be a singer/songwriter, it's not just believable, but I'm actually rooting for her. I mean, she's carrying a damn baseball bat and completely unimpressed by Rick. I can do that. Even the "Bridge Bunnies" have a bit more gravitas. I hope the writers go into their backstories.

But Claudia. I love Claudia Grant. I'll shank you over Claudia Grant (not really, but I will kick you in the shins, lol). But, what did they do to her design-wise? She looks unfinished somehow. Where's that awesome TWA (teeny weenie afro) and that gorgeous dark skin that Roy couldnt get enough of? Her skin color and hair match and it looks drowned out. Bring back the fro! It's nuts that the Japanese showed more respect for her looks than these guys are.

Still it's early days. And she still has her take-charge attitude. And she got to lock lips with boyfriend Roy Fokker in one of the opening panels.

I need a Claudia/Roy sex scene now. Why?

Because. Reasons.

With that said, I still love this update better than I thought I would. Rick is still annoying though.

1 star = I did not like it.
As a teenager I loved the original Robotech. I had seen some of the episodes and then got obsessed with the novels, and then read some of the original comics. Me and my best friend would stay up late into the night trying to work out what exactly Protoculture was, how it could be Rick and Lisa kissing and still be used to power motorcycles! This was the days before the interwebs so there wasn't a handy Wikipedia page explaining the three unconnected stories put together. Though the novels did a fair bit of managing it.
I saw the ads for the new Robotech comic a couple months ago and they filled me with nostalgia. I went and got the original cartoons on DVD. I went and re-read all the Macross novels and remembered just why I had loved the series so much. So was quite looking forward to seeing the new Robotech guys at LFCC and reading the new comic. But alas when I got there they were awful. The artist didn't talk to me at all. The Titan Comics guy had long conversations with three different men who arrived after me, before he'd actually sell me a comic. Clearly they were of the opinion that women just don't read comics. So I had a bad association before I did read it.
When I did read it it was still disappointing. First of all I didn't like the art at all. It's not anime style! It's not realistic style. Everyone is ugly. Minmei doesn't look Chinese (and in her character intro leave out that she's Chinese). Rick's lost his big spikey hair! Everyone seems westernised and uglified. Rather than adding more to the original story like the novels did, bringing out all the implications of the world being destroyed when the SDF1 first landed. All the characterisation and background that "Jack" developed. None of that is drawn on. Instead you get Rick and Roy being Even More stupidly Macho! The dialogue is terrible. Nothing is any better. Indeed the only change they seem to have made is to put the ugly Minmei in jeans and sneakers and have her try and attack Rick's veritech with a baseball bat! (Cause you know young Chinese girls who dream of being popstars living near Japan just love baseball and would have bats handy!). Clearly an attempt to make her a "strong female character" but Minmei was great because she was that career driven teen idol type. Also they got rid of her young cousin who she was actually their protecting and just had her on her own.
The short version is the art was inferior the story is inferior. Stick with the original.

Great!

Overall good retelling of the origin episode of the original series. Great drawings, a little short, would be better as a graphic novel.

I grew up watching Robotech on tv. I've rewatched the series well over two dozen times since it originally aired (we recorded each episode on the VCR and I still have those tapes in the garage). I'm not sure if my extensive and long -lasting love for and knowledge of the Americanized trilogy puts me at a disadvantage here or not.

I can't help but compare the dialogue, the characters, even the action and backgrounds to the anime so I'm not sure how a newcomer would receive the comic, having no previous exposure to the show. Is it better if your childhood isn't being rebooted in floppy format? Or does it make it confusing? Maybe this really is for first timers and not for the diehard lifelong fans? I'll keep reading but I'm not excited about this comic now.
