Introduces the sailing enthusiast and boat designer, Steven Callahan, who struggled to survive after his small sailboat, the "Napoleon Solo," sank into the Atlantic Ocean.
A great nonfiction text for elementary and middle school students, this title's reading level is very low and it's high interest. Callahan describes his experience surviving in a life raft for like 70 days after his sailboat sinks; adventures include fighting off sharks and killing fish & birds and eating them raw (I think--it's been a while since I read it). It made an excellent companion to the novel "The Cay" and probably "Hatchet". My kids really enjoyed my brief read-aloud (for a state test "parallel task") and it was read afterward by many of the kids voluntarily.
This book was a really short read about a amazing sailor stranded at sea. If you like reading about people being stranded and stuff like that, then this book will give show you just how hard it is too be stranded. If you ask me, fighting a shark is a pretty amazing accomplishment. I won't spoil it for you anymore.
