Meredith Ann Pierce is a fantasy writer and librarian. Her books deal in fantasy worlds with mythic settings and yet overturn standard expectations, frequently featuring young women who first wish only to love and be loved, yet who must face hazard and danger to save their way of life, their world, and so on, usually without being respected for their efforts until the end of the story.
This original story is lyrical and folktale-like. Accompanied by gorgeous paintings by Jamichael Henterly. When Truzjka's grandmother falls ill and wants to find out where the wild geese go, Truzjka volunteers to go and find out. But is her journey real, or just a fevered dream?
Children's picture book fantasy, with a Nordic/Baltic setting and a quest plot. There's a little of the magic of Phillip Pullman's armored bears, swans and witches, but the moral of the story is more Wizard of Oz. Gorgeous illustrations.
I remember reading this book as a child in elementary school and loving the pictures. Now that I read it again, I find it a little strange, and not really my taste, but I remember the excitement that I felt imagining the story as told by the pictures. Just another example of how the pictures can create a world of their own.
