The future is darker than you think!Life on Mars came at a price. The next step in human colonization was meant to begin a new era in civilization as we knew it. But greed and corruption changed everything.
To maintain peace, the government employed a police force of brainwashed and brutal men. Their objective; kill your assigned target and don’t ask questions. Not a problem when everything you once knew has been wiped from your memories.
When current events leads one of their own to remember the humanity they stripped from him, there will be hell to pay.
But as the dust settles, he may lose everything he once loved in the process.
Drew Avera is a Navy veteran, musician, and the bestselling author of the Dead Planet series and the Alorian Wars.
He was born and raised in rural Mississippi and grew up with a deep affection for comic books and science fiction movies and television shows. At one point he boasted a comic book collection with more than 1,000 issues. His love for comics inspired him to pursue a career as a comic book artist, but an injury to his hand ended that dream permanently.
Still, he was inspired to create in one medium or the other. He picked up a guitar at fifteen years old and began writing songs almost immediately. That “obsession” as his parents called it put him on the path to rock stardom…in his bedroom.
It was when he turned sixteen and bought the novel “What Savage Beast” by Peter David (The Incredible Hulk) that he caught the bug to be a writer. Unfortunately, it would not come to fruition until fourteen years later.
Drew enlisted in the US Navy as an Aviation Electricians Mate at seventeen years old. He served twenty years and deployed on four combat deployments to the Persian Gulf. During those deployments he would spend his free time reading books. He loved reading books in a series and that inspired his journey to becoming a fiction author.
In November 2012, at the age of thirty, Drew began his journey as an author by participating in national Novel Writing Month (NANoWriMo). He published his first book in March of 2013 and the rest, as they say, is history. With more than twenty books published in the space opera, military science fiction, cyberpunk, and dystopian genres, he has built a backlog with something for everyone who enjoys science fiction adventures.
After retiring from the Navy, he began an exciting new career in the simulation field. Drew is now focusing his efforts on building upon what he learned in his first eight years of publishing. He has plans for an all-new space opera and military science fiction series as well as new collaborations with other writers.
Simple World-building … Mars have been colonized for nearly 4000 years and it is ruled by corporate elites known as the Syndicate who are fairly stock bad guys of questionable morals and an apparent sadistic streak to make them truly and unquestionably evil. This authoritarian style government uses a “pontiff” puppet as governor and brainwashed assassins, euphemistically called “policemen” and who answer to a shell organization known as The Agency. Policemen are armed with laser gauntlets with neural links that pretty much do anything the author needs them to do. Outside of that and a reference to an artificial magnetic field that keeps mars habitable, the world is basically a dystopian America.
Simple Characters … bad guys bad … good guys good … and never the twain shall meet. Syndicate players really have no redeeming characteristics and, although paying some lip service to a profit moments, really are just addicted to power and the free exercise there if to teach the uppity masses a thing or two. The MC is a “policeman” assassin whose brainwashing didn’t completely take and “breaks” programming when he learns of a hit on his sister. You could perhaps forgive the somewhat stunted emotional capacity of Serus, except the supporting characters don’t do much better (making it seem like this story seem like it was targeting a much younger audience … say middle school). After overcoming his initial programming, Serus doesn’t really grow much … which makes it incessant navel gazing a minor irritation such that if it were not for the string of incredibly poor choices by pretty much everybody in the book would have been more of a factor in the rating. As it is, he miraculous seems to survive the consequences said bad decisions while absorbing enough damage to stop a charging Rhino and still somehow function (mostly because the villains are also incredibly stupid as well). Finally … toward the end we see a mild christian evangelization as the MC contemplate God and the Bible and his life choices.
Simple Plot … bad guys abandon Mars to its fate as the artificial magnetic field is failing (to eventually become The Dead Planet … maybe). Good guys are SJW that don’t think that’s fair and seem to focus on making the elites pay for abandoning them … lead of course by a reformed bad guy. It is remarkable (and saddening) how corrosive the violent revenge motif here is. Once the action gets back to Earth … we see pretty much the same strongman polities simplistically boiled down to only two (relatively small) actual communities. The broad strokes here are completely predictable and it is the narration that helps keep it all interesting.
I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Received as an audio review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Narrated by nicely by AI Kessel, comes the story of Serus Blackwell and how his life has been turned upside down by being forced into The Agency and being turned into a trained killer, taking out whoever puts out a hit onto-all upon the dusty world of a futuristic Mars. The one thing Serus couldn't imagine his own sister, Kara would become a target to die by the hands of a "Policeman". Finding out the reason means Serus has to work with the very scum he wouldn't have a problem of murdering and it's why Kara is suppose to die haunts Serus and forces the man and any of those he can trust to turn their deadly skills back upon the very Agency that made them as they are to stop an organization obsessed with absolute dominance with no regard of the lives they could end.
Sacrifices. Harrowing consequences. One man's path of determination.
Exodus (Dead Planet #1), my ninth read from author Drew Avera. Enjoyable police detective science fiction adventure read.
Verity (Dead Planet #2), my tenth read from author Drew Avera. Enjoyable Dystopian science fiction adventure read. The story was well-written & flowed smoothly & quickly, although short.
Endgame (Dead Planet #3), my eleventh read from author Drew Avera. Enjoyable Dystopian science fiction adventure read. I was given a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. The story was well-written & flowed smoothly & quickly, although short. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
As usual the author Drew Avera don’t disappoint. This is an amazing story which have it all. When humanity spreads into space it started with what they knew letting earth govern and police the planets. Then each planet declares independence and create their own version of government and a police force. Little by little the powerful companies on earth kept growing over thousands of years they became so powerful that they dropped the shared taking over the planets and their freedom using an old earth technique the mafia way. Now the people are fed up deciding to take back their life from the greed of the syndicate and win back their control and freedom. The conspiracies and the twists in this series are absolutely mind blowing, without them the story would be half as good if that.
Al Kessel have narrated perfectly and beautifully, each of the characters in this creation.
Audiobook: If I could rate this audiobook with a 4.5 I would, as I really enjoyed the first and third book of this series. The second book seemed to be more of a bridge between the first and third books. The first book captured my attention from the opening pages until the end with all the twists and turns. In the second book, the action slowed down. In the third book, I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. I liked the way the author wrote the character of Serus, as a man trapped between his conditioning and his emotions. Al Kessel's narration was entertaining. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
Drew Avera has outdone himself with this trilogy. We follow the life of Serus Blackwell, an Agent of the Syndicate on Mars. It begins with his indoctrination/brainwashing and follows his career as an enforcer for the Syndicate. Read how he throws off his conditioning to save his sister from a hit and flees to Earth with her. (An Earth that is slowly recovering from apocalyptic ravages.) They then promptly return in an attempt to save Mars’ dying atmosphere. They have barely arrived when a communication from Earth demands that Serus return to face the judgement of the Syndicate or his Sister’s new found love will die.
Follow Serus’ adventures and misadventures on both Mars and Earth. Find out just who his family, friends, frienemies and enemies really are. Mr. Avera’s trilogy will keep you reading nonstop.
This was a very good series. The protagonist, Serus, struggles with his humanity as he comes out of a brainwashed state. He goes from being an assassin to a freedom fighter and gets help from people he would have never imagined. He also has hidden enemies. There are some twists in these books that make things interesting. The writing is not overly complicated. It was a pleasure to read these books..
The bleakness and desperation in this series arcs throughout it as a pervasive cloud. Nothing is ever as the protagonist sees it. Friends are enemies and enemies are friends. It is well written but a bit dark for me at this juncture in my life. My only critique would be the final epilogue. It fits with how they survived but it was underwhelming.
I loved this series. I was always turning the next page eager to find what I would experience next.. It's kept me intrigued and wanting more. Looking forward to your next series 😁
I have long felt that the 5 scoring is too limiting. 3 is too little but 4 is too much. This is a good story butchered by trying to write for the YA. I hate the over emphasis and underemphasis of this kind. Still, its6a good story!
Great books. Story-line was strong, and it did cut out the boring bits of what would of being boring out without damaging the pace and feelings fuelling it. I liked the characters as well. Highly recommend.
A powerful adventure across two planets I was really moved by the main character's journey of self discovery. Starting as a programed killer serving the syndicate, to discovering his lost humanity. All from a love the agency could not purge from him completely. My only complaint was that, coming only from his point of view, the female characters seemed less developed, even his sister who had traveled the journey with him. I would recommend this author, I found this story to be well written and compelling.
This series grabbed me from the start and I didn't until I reached the end. It has great characters and lots of action. I would recommend this book to anyone from young adult to senior citizen who likes fantasy/syfi.
