Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.
Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.
Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.
According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.
This is one Enid Blyton's short stories accompanied by coloured illustrations. The Famous Five want to have a lazy afternoon but get convinced by their dog, Timmy, to go out to the woods. Here they all fall asleep and Timmy runs away. Two criminals try to hide a bag in a tree, which wakes up the children. With the help of Timmy (who has returned), they trap the criminals in the tree until the police arrive.
This story is a great introduction to the best selling author and to her longer novels. The theme of adventure is fun and engaging and pupils will be able to relate to the characters, who are their age. The book is well suited to upper KS1 or lower KS2. There is some complex vocabulary linked to forests and the outdoors (copse, brook, saplings), which has some good cross-curricular links to plants in science or habitats in geography. There is also some good emotive language, which can be used in literacy work and can encourage pupils to use more complex synonyms.
Overall I think that this book is a good addition to a classroom library and it is easily accessible for children to develop their reading skills.

By a sunny afternoon, the five kids and Dagobert, the dog, decide to take a nap in the forest. Suddenly, some bad guys arrive, so the kids send the dog to frighten them and... it works. Yey! I'm still searching for a scenario, as well as the adventure/mystery spirit from the Famous Five series. For sure, it's readable, especially for very young readers, but nothing interesting happens and without the nice illustrations, it would be a totally boring read.
Even when they are bumming around the Famous Five still manage to save the day yet again. Another of the short stories from the five and this one does feature a lazy afternoon, of sorts, with adventure and mystery of course, and lashings of ginger beer in there somewhere.
I love the adventures of the famous five. It delights the readers all the time. The book took me back to my childhood days where I used to watch it on TV.
I ratted 3 stars because noting really is happening just 2 men getting out a side car with a small mail bag and police chasing them + it’s extra borring because the famous five is literally lazy.
One of my students brought this book into class and I was curious to read it because Enid Blyton is such a well-known name in children's books, and The Famous Five is one of her best-known series. Blyton has a series of Famous Five short stories that have recently been republished with great illustrations and are called Famous Five Colour Reads, of which this book is one. I noticed that, in addition to the illustrations, the font type is a bit like the Geronimo Stilton books, with big and bold font interspersed throughout the story.
Though I didn't love the story myself, it would probably appeal to some lower elementary students. It would be good to have as an option for easy chapter books and a fun example of a mystery/adventure series.
Two things that I thought were fun about the story: 1. The kids want to be sure to make it back home by tea time, which you'd never find in American book. American kids would get hungry and want to get back for lunch or dinner. 2. The kids are desperate to find a cool place to hang out because it is such a hot day. Now-a-days, they'd probably never leave the air-conditioned house.
A Lazy Afternoon Turns Thrilling Even in the sweltering heat, the Famous Five can’t escape adventure—mysterious men on motorbikes spark a chase full of suspense, daring, and clever detective work.
