Playing for Keeps

Rate this book
Tyler Bowie is the serious and focused goalie for the York Bombers. He has his mind on the game and his eye on the future. And he always plays by the rules--until he meets Jennifer Emory, his teammate's sister. What is it about the troubled woman that tempts him to break the biggest rule of all?

Jennifer Emory is looking to start a new life and finds the distraction she needs in Tyler Bowie, her brother's intensely sexy teammate. But the distraction quickly turns to something else. She knows all about the bro code, but there's just something about Tyler that makes her want to take a chance and risk so much more than her brother's ire.

Will the couple find the strength and courage to put it all on the line when love means playing for keeps?

Lisa B. Kamps scores a hat trick with the third book in the York Bombers series, PLAYING FOR KEEPS. AHL Goalie, Tyler Bowie, is off his game. On top of that, he is interested in his team mates little sister, Jennifer Emory. A relationship that is off limits due to the bro code. This contemporary sports romance is suitable for new adult and adult audiences.

Lisa B. Kamps continues to do a great job with this series. The story is new and original but has consistent elements with the previous books.

I felt bad for what Jennifer went through with her previous boyfriend, Viktor. He is a complete slime. I appreciated the hockey scene where the boys got into it with him. There is a difference between liking hockey players and being a puck bunny. Jenny is no puck bunny.

Tyler is a likeable character. I could understand why his concentration and game were affected. It would be hard to not be jealous in his situation. He is a good guy who is protective and fair.

I like that the story takes place during the same timeline as the previous book. It is interesting hearing different perspectives of situations from the characters, especially with Jason.

I like that Jenny and Magan became friends. I loved the ending of the book. I’m looking forward to Zach Mummert’s story in book four, PLAYING IT UP. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Playing For Keeps by Lisa B. Kamps is the third installment in her York Bombers series and touches on timely topics in this brothers teammate to lovers story. Jennifer Emory is running from her past. Her brother is questioning her life choices but Jennifer is trying to hold it together and make something she can live for out of her new life all the while keeping a secret from Jason. Tyler Bowie, Bombers Goalie, knows the teammate's code but he can't stop thinking about Jennifer and it's affecting his game. Questioning just about everything, Tyler needs to step up and grab ahold of what he wants.

Lisa has an amazing talent for the perfect balance of drama and hockey in her novels. Playing For Keeps doesn't disappoint yet again. This story starts off with quite the "Bang" but it's more than just hot scenes. It's emotional and layered and also a tad uncomfortable at times due to the topic but that showed me depth. 4 Stars for Playing For Keeps by Lisa B. Kamps

M/F Romance

I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

I have read book 1, but somehow, missed book 2... so on to book 3. I never felt that I was missing anything.

Jennifer is the sister of hockey player, Jason. While she has a type - hot hockey players, she has also been badly hurt by the very last one. So hurt that she fled and went to live with her brother. She loves what she did, but knows that starting over is going to be hard.

Jason is a surly, stubborn, pigheaded hockey player who has some terrible communication skills. He loves his sister, but has a difficult time showing it.

Then you have Tyler. He is Jason's teammate. When he and Jennifer end up in a secret relationship, Tyler needs to decide whether or not making his teammate mad is worth keeping Jenny.

Games happen, communication between teammates is terrible and Jenny and Tyler see how far they can go in this new, budding relationship..

This was a fairly predictable story with a HEA. I do hope that we get to see or hear what happens with Haley.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review. I love Lisa's books and this one did not disappoint. Lisa writes a true to life romance that's full of chatacter attitude that you can't help but understand and get involved in. You are waiting to find out how things are going to turn out right up to the last page. You do not need to be a hockey fan to enjoy this book.

Life is full of regrets and what ifs wether you play by the rules or not. Tyler has always played by the rules, but is second guessing that choice as to how far it is going to get him in his hockey career. Jenny's life is full of regrets over her past and is trying to protect herself from future pain. They try to help each other, but when you throw in an overprotective big brother that just happens to be a teammate, it's not that easy.

I'm starting to enjoy this series more then the Banners one and I think it's just because everything is happening at the same time, and each book isn't it's own season. This book was very good and really kept me on my toes. I'll have to wait and see how the next book is handled

Jennifer 'Jenny' Emory is looking for a fresh start after what the guy she was dating did to her. Embarrassed and humiliated beyond measure, she moves in with her brother and does her best to keep her mind off what happened. Luckily, Tyler Bowie offers the perfect distraction. Yet, the more time they spend together, the more Tyler realizes they need to tell her brother about their relationship, especially when Tyler and her brother are teammates on the ice. The question is - will Jenny's brother accept their relationship, or will he be the cause of things falling apart between them?

Ms. Kamps always manages to write wonderful stories that grab my undivided attention from the start and don't let go until the very end, and this story was no different due to the main characters and their back stories, especially Jenny. She's been through a lot with her last boyfriend and it's difficult for her to talk about because what he did left her embarrassed, humiliated and feeling ashamed for putting her trust in the guy she was seeing. Yet, what I really liked about the beginning is the moment the hero and heroine are introduced into this story, because Tyler finds himself getting lectured by one of his teammates as he does his best to fight his attraction to Jenny because she's off-limits.

The dialogue had me hooked from start to finish and was intense due to the reactions of those they care about when it comes to their relationship; whether they can overcome the obstacles they face such as if Tyler can handle the truth about Jenny's past and how she's ashamed of it; and the fact that this story encompasses the forbidden relationship trope. It was also intense due to the things that are happening with the secondary characters that Jenny is determined to stick her nose into, because no one should be able to get away with what is happening to a certain secondary character.

Both the main characters back stories were really interesting, especially since Tyler becomes more volatile, because of what's going on with his hockey career. Can he reign his temper in before he loses it completely and takes his anger out on someone? Then there's Jenny with what her ex did to her, which had me feeling sorry for her, because she didn't deserve such horrible treatment. Why did her ex have to be so cruel? Is it because he didn't like the fact that Jenny broke up with him? Will Jenny open up to her brother and will he be able to handle what was done to her without flying off the deep end?

Jenny is down because of what her ex did, but she's certainly not out. She's definitely strong and brave in what she's doing to start over and I liked that she wasn't afraid to stand up to her brother when he gave her a hard time. I also liked how protective she was of people that weren't willing to stand up for themselves; people like one of the secondary characters, Haley, that need a good friend on her side. While the hero, he goes through a lot in this story and I couldn't help but sympathize with his situation, especially when it comes to his hockey career and whether he can bounce back from the bad season he's having. I could also understand why he was trying to do his best to fight his feelings for Jenny, even though that seemed impossible because of the powerful chemistry they had, which eventually spilled over onto the pages in nicely-detailed sex scenes that illustrate how much these two need each other, no matter that their relationship should be forbidden.

Overall, Ms. Kamps has penned another really good read for this series where the secondary characters have me looking forward to more of this series, especially because of what Jenny did for Haley and how she was determined to get one of the other secondary characters to help her. The way this story ended had me liking Jenny more than I already did, because there was no way she was going to continue to allow her brother and Tyler to be at odds and I liked how her surprise was the answer. I would recommend Playing for Keeps by Lisa B. Kamps, if you enjoy the forbidden relationship trope or books by authors Kelly Jamieson, Jillian Quinn, Sawyer Bennett or Toni Aleo.

It's a huge fan of sports romance. I love strong dedicated athletes finding women who love them inspire of their profession. Being a professional athlete seems like a great life, but I don't think the wives and girlfriends enjoy the highs and lows that go along with their distractions and absences. I particularly like the authentic play and practice is woven into these stories as well as being in the head of the players on good days and bad. The hockey is a character in the book just as well as the players.

Tyler is a follow the rules kind of guy who plays goalie but due to recent management decisions he's doubting his place in the organization. He works hard and puts in the extra time on his hand eye agility and does yoga to keep his body in top form to fill the crease and stop those goals. He does a favor for his teammate Jason and picks up his kid sister from the airport. Turns out she's anything but a kid, she's beautiful and fires him up. Bro code puts her squarely in the no go zone, no matter how much he likes her. The spark is mutual, Jenny thinks Tyler is every bit as attractive as he finds her. A guy is the last thing she needs right now, she making a fresh start from some poor decisions and a painful secret. The pair make friends but it's not going to stop there the pull is too strong, but it's got to stay a secret because Jason will not be happy.

I enjoyed these characters the story had me engaged and pulling for them from the beginning through the end. Jason hasn't shown his best face yet in this series, he's got some serious making up to do. I love when I get my HEA. As always I'm eager for the next book.

Playing For Keeps by Lisa B Kamps is book 3 in the York Bombers Hockey series and can be read as a standalone.

Jenny Emory has left everything behind to start a new life. She’s moved in with her brother, Jason, and is trying to find a job but things aren’t as easy as she expected. She’s also feeling lonely as she’s not had time to make any new friends and Jason is focused on Megan. Then she gets the opportunity to spend time with Tyler, Jason’s teammate, and she jumps at the chance but Jason wouldn’t be happy if he found out, so they have to meet in secret. As they spend more time together, Tyler becomes a great distraction for Jenny but secrets have a way of being exposed and Jenny’s now not only keeping one secret, she’s keeping two.

Tyler Bowie always followed the rules and kept his eye firmly set on where he wants to go with his career in hockey but he’s recently become disillusioned and after meeting Jenny, decides it’s maybe time to do things a little different. Despite Jason’s orders that none of the York Bombers players go near Jenny, Tyler invites her out to dinner and she quickly becomes a temptation that he’s not sure he can or even wants to resist. But will Tyler be willing to stand by Jenny and be the strength she needs if secrets are exposed and she faces losing the new life she’s fought hard to have.

“Except look where following the rules had gotten him so far: the same place he had started at. So maybe it was time to...maybe not break the rules. Just bend them. A little.” - Tyler

There’s something about forbidden or secret relationships that draws me in and Lisa B Kamps has written another amazing story that has you feeling for the characters and hoping they get their HEA that they so much deserve. Yes, Jenny and Tyler are keeping a pretty big secret from Jason but I never once believed that they were doing something wrong and loved seeing how they were there for each other when both needed someone. In fact, I kind of hated Jason for how he was and especially how he treated poor Jenny. Had I seen this side of him before reading his story in Playing To Win, then I would’ve considered him an overprotective selfish jerk. I think Megan is just what Jason needs to help him become a better brother and friend.

I really felt for Jenny in this story as she’d had to leave her life behind and start all over again because of one selfish jerk and then she ends up living with another, her brother. Thankfully she has Tyler who gives her the support she needs but he’s got his own issues to deal with and she’s there for him in return. They give each other strength and become a partnership but not before struggling with the feelings each of them experience due to the other. I love this couple and hope to see more of them; just like we’ve learnt more about Harland and Courtney, and Jason and Megan as the series progresses. It’s kind of like getting extended epilogues of their HEA’s.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Playing For Keeps but this review and the rating is based entirely on my own views and experiences of reading the story. Next in the series will be Playing It Up, book 4 in the series, due for release in August 2017. If you haven’t already, get the book pre-ordered because I’m certain it will be another goal score for Lisa B Kamps.

You can never go wrong with one of Lisa's hockey stories.
This time we get to see what is going on with Tyler and Jason's
little sister Jenny.
Tyler was warned away from Jenny as everyone knows she's off limits being
she is a teamate's sister, and it just a no go.
Does Tyler listen to the warnings? Jenny has had a very bad experience with her
last hockey boyfriend, thus the reason for her leaving home and moving in with
Jason. Does Jenny heed her own warnings about no more getting involved with a
hockey player?
This will keep you interested from the start and I found that I really grew to like
Tyler.
A must read !

ee Anne Crompton Carr I received an ARC on this book and I must say I absolutely loved it. Jenny grew up with a hockey playing brother so she was around hockey players all her life. The last hockey player boyfriend ended with a bad break and traumatize Jenny so badly she moved away from home into her brothers house trying to get away from the demons of the last relationship. Her brother can't meet her when she arrives and gets his friend and fellow teammate Tyler to pick Jenny up. Sparks fly between the two, both try to deny the attraction until they Finally start dating in secret. Jason is distracted with his own relationship and doesn't notice until Jenny's past catches up with her. Unfortunately that's also the same time Jason finds out about his teammate and Jenny. Words are said, can love over come that and the traumatic secret Jenny held? You must read the book to find out. Excellent read, I couldn't put it down.

I love sports romance novels and I don't mean I love them .... I absolutely, fricken love them! There is always so much excitement, drama and they have the best steamy romance scenes. I mean who wouldn't want to read about sexy, hot, men who dominate the sport that they play in ..... Tyler Bowie is the hot goaltender for the York Bombers, who is focused on his career and his team. That all changes when he meets his teammates sister, Jennifer Emory who has moved to the city to get away from a secret that she has been hiding from her brother and friends. Tyler is just the guy to bring Jennifer out of her shell and to start to trust again. However, when the truth comes out about Jennifer's past and their secret relationship, can they survive?

Lisa B. Kamps is a very talented writer who knows how to keep her audience on their toes and wanting more. The chemistry between Tyler and Jennifer is absolutely off the walls on how hot they are for each other. The passion and courage that Jennifer shows is unreal, but also a caution to readers on what can happen in today's world. However, Tyler's love and determination to prove to the women he loves that love knows no bounds, is a true testament that there is someone out there for everyone and love can conquer all. Or maybe I am just a romantic at heart?

For those looking for a good, sexy, hot summer read, then this is the book for you. It has action, romance, sex and a sexy leading male lead who will have you swooning. Lisa B. Kamps has created this series that I cannot wait to read more of and I am excited for the next book! Make sure you don't miss out and add Playing For Keeps to your To-Be-Read Shelf!

SECRETS. Playing For Keeps is the third book in the York Bombers series. As with the author's other books, the action is hot and steamy, so definitely 18+. While this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. Though some events coincide with events in the first book. There is some violence.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that info here. This story is about Tyler and Jenny. If you read the previous book, Playing to Win, we first met Jenny in her brother Jason's story. As a hockey fan, I always like the hockey action, but like how this book also highlighted that off the ice the players are real people with family, jobs, and relationship issues just like the rest of us. I look forward to reading more of this series.

This author hit a Gordie Howe Hat Trick for this Red Wing girl with Tyler and Jenny's story in book three of the York Bombers.

Tyler and Jenny both have struggles in their lives. He has always played by the book and yet feels like he never wins. Jenny has struck out at love and is running from a past that has left her broken in more ways than one and yet that attraction...that spark, just can't be ignored. Add into this Jason, Jenny's brother and Tyler's teammate and things are bound to get interesting.

Jason is a dream come true, he's tough and stands up for Jenny and yet he can be caring and sensitive. Jenny's been hurt and she needs someone to show her she's worth loving and that she doesn't have to beat herself up for the past and Jason is just the man to do it. Her brother Jason loves his sister and wants to protect her from the world.

I loved their journey with each other, as well as how those around them deal with it. This author writes a refreshing story that deals with people who aren't perfect, who have problems and it isn't tied up in a pretty package with a bow, even on the last page of the book. When I finished this book, I missed the Bombers so much, I am going to read the first three again and impatiently wait for more. I highly recommend this book and was given a copy for an honest review.

Tyler Bowie is a serious and super focused goalie for the York Bombers. His eyes are straight up on the game, and he never breaks the rules. But all of that went out of the window when he met Jennifer Emory, one of his teammates sisters. Jennifer is trying to start a new life, and needs a distraction. It just so happens that she decides Tyler fits that bill perfectly. However, the problem becomes that feelings are quickly growing, which makes her willing to risk her brother's anger for it. That is the best that I could do trying to describe the awesomeness that I just read without giving away spoilers, so there it is. Now on to my feelings, first of all, that cover! SO FREAKIN' HOT! Just want to cuddle with it! Lisa B. Kamps' talented writing style came off very original, especially about a hot hockey player, and I loved it so much! She had me instantly from the get go, and I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough, then becoming sad when I finished, because I NEEDED SO MUCH MORE! This is a great series that I've very addicted to, and CANNOT WAIT (may or may not be stalking her social media while I wait impatiently) to see what she comes out with next! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Wow! Just wow! Lisa likes to keep you on your toes with her books so you never know where she will lead you. Tyler knows that Jennifer is off limits. She is a teammate's sister and it's the code. But they keep getting thrown together and it's not his fault she is attractive. Jennifer flees to her brother's to start over and hopefully escape the past. She didn't expect to fall for Tyler. They start a relationship in secret. She's trying to keep her past from haunting her but some things cannot be kept away. Tyler is trying to deal with his position on the ice. Secrets and lies play an important role in this book but the relationship that develops between these two is sweet and you cannot help but root for them. I love the ending and resolution. And I love the support that Tyler gives Jennifer throughout it all despite his own struggles. Many characters reappear in the book from the Bombers as well as a few of the Banners.

"Sports. Forbidden romance. Fresh start. Distracting chemistry. Tyler was teammate to her brother. She was supposed to be forbidden, but there was just something there. Tyler had no choice but to explore what was there. Then things take a turn and exploring their relationship may no longer be an option he’s willing to continue in. Jennifer had a life that turned a bit sour and she decided to run. To her brother. She knew he loves her but it was hard to see at time.

Jennifer had a lot to deal with running for an incident, her over bearing brother, making a new life for herself, and exploring this thing between her and Tyler.

Lisa B. Kamps have allured me in to a new series. This was the first read in this series and even with the predictability of it. I very much enjoyed the story. I want to place the series on its own day and just binge read it.

This is the 3rd book in the York Bombers series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. For reader enjoyment and understanding, I recommend reading this series in order.

Jennifer had to start over. She just needed a new place and new scenery to get over the past. Her brother lets her stay with him. Then she meets his teammate....

Tyler has already got the hots for his friends sister. The code among the team is you don't poach family. He just cannot stop how he feels. She seems to feel something too.

This is such a fast paced story. I like the characters and the heat. Love that it has hockey. This series is just a really great read. I am hoping for another installment.

Even though this is the 3rd book in this series it isn't necessary to read the other two first. In this story we get to know Tyler and Jenny. Tyler is the goalie and hoping to make it to the next level, but he can't help thinking about Jenny who is off limits because she's his teammates sister. Jenny has a secret from her past that she's trying to leave behind in this attempt to start over. These two have a great deal of chemistry and really are better together than apart! This is the third book in the York Bombers series, and the stories continue to get better each time. Lisa deals with real life complications in her storylines. This particular book brings a story of a bad and potentially dangerous relationship with an ex, as well as a selfish and volition relationship with a sibling. The way the main characters meet and grow to care about each other is touching. Sometimes the right person is "worth going for it" with! I love the series and the way the characters from the first two books are effortlessly woven into the story in both large and small roles. It's a MUST READ for Romance lovers who enjoy a well developed story line!

What a wonderful read with plenty of hot action on and off the ice. I was hooked as soon as I started reading and was so involved in Tyler and Jenny's story, I didn't want the book to end. I love the family-like atmosphere of the York Bombers and the characters are so realistic, you feel like you know them. Ms. Kamps has given us another winner that is funny, emotional and touching. This may be my favorite Bombers yet (I have a thing for goalies)! I loved this book. Tyler is a wonderful character. Tyler falls for his teammate's sister, which is a definite no-no. Unfortunately, Tyler can't help himself, and Jenny is all he can think about. There were a few spots in this book where I wanted to jump through the pages and beat a couple people, but that just shows how intense Lisa's words are. I definitely can't wait for the next book!

Playing for Keeps proves yet again why Lisa is one of my favourite authors.
Every time I read one of her books, I am quickly absorbed into her world and swept away by her stories.
In this book, she touches on the negative side of social media. I don't want to give away the storyline, but my heart did weep for Jenny.
Tyler is a true gentleman. He is very much a mans man, but is quite comfortable showing his softer side.
Wish I could give this book more than 5 stars - just brilliant.

This is the second book that I have read of Ms. Kamps, and again it did not disappoint! As with the Baltimore Banners series, I did not read any of the prior books in the series first. Once again, I was not lost! I loved how protective Tyler was of Jenny! Even after secrets are revealed, his feelings never changed. This book kept you interested all the way to the end! It can be read as a stand alone. I would definitely recommend this book!
