Troubled Aussie football star, Rhett Williams’ infamous off-field misdemeanours land him in front of his club’s board with an ultimatum: clean up his bad-boy image or lose his contract.
There’s one catch: appear on a reality show to reinvent himself.
Football is Rhett’s lifeblood, but his family and the orchard farm in the country where he grew up means more, especially as his family relies on his wage to keep the business afloat. So Rhett puts his opinion of reality shows aside to concentrate on doing whatever it takes to be re-signed.
Career-focussed TV mentor, Tori Winchester doesn’t have time for men, or a social life, which suits her fine. When Rhett Williams arrives on set with his blond beach hair and his mesmerising blue eyes, her resolve begins to crumble. He’s not the spoiled bad boy casting had told her to expect.
Getting involved with someone like Rhett could not only damage her long-term career prospects, they could both lose everything.
In a game of cat and mouse, Rhett is playing the one game he doesn’t want to win…
Best selling Australian author, Leesa Bow writes alphas with a fierce determination to win, and the women who will push for them to fight harder. Her love of sports romance came from inspiration from her sporty family. Leesa loves nothing more than to curl up with a good book, and a glass of South Australian wine.
I haven’t had a boyfriend in years either. So long that all my orifices have been reinstated to virginal status.
Some mistakes can be prevented… Others are meant to happen.
My Review:
Winning the Game had an interesting premise, amusing and entertaining storylines, and a few interesting and endearing characters, although the vast majority of the cast were dishearteningly shallow, manipulative, and self-serving. I grew increasingly annoyed and disappointed with the main character of Tori as her seesawing, waffling, and deceit became increasingly tiresome and tedious. Rhett was a highly likable and cleverly amusing bad boy who had been forced into participating in a “scripted drama” reality program under duress to save his sports career. I felt considerable empathy for him as he had been blackmailed into cooperating with ambitious network vipers and had been exploited by everyone by the end of the story. Among the angst and backstabbing and between the Tori’s flip-flopping, a covert yet sweet and steamy romance was blooming. Of course, those were my favorite chapters.
I've never read a book by this author so I didn't know what to expect. I was not let down. So you have Rhett who is as the media puts out to be a bad boy. He has to do a reality show to revamp his image. And he has to do it if he wants to renew his contract with his team. Then you have Tori who is a career driven woman. She has no time for anything but to make her career go further. I always say love comes when you aren't looking. Or when you least expect it. I enjoyed the characters and laughed out loud at the funny parts. I can't wait to read more from this author. - By Mandi
This book is about Rhett, an Australian Football player who has made a mess a few times too many in the public eye. To make sure he can continue playing the game he loves he needs to work on his image. To do this he is put on a reality show to look for love. During this show he needs to prove he is a different man than the "player" many thinks he is. Tori is a hard working woman who has had some pain in the past and doesn't trust guys all that well. To have a chance at a promotion at work, Tori is to mentor Rhett and make sure he seems like a perfect gentleman during the show.
This year I discovered sports romances and have been loving them. So when I had the chance to read this I had to take it. And I wasn't sorry I took the chance. Winning the Game is what you expect of this genre. The main characters shouldn't be together, but somehow find themselves attracted to each other. I loved how in this story that even though the typical stuff happens it still found a way to surprise me. I like how this book is told by both perspectives. This gives us readers the thoughts and feelings of both characters and this makes it easier to connect to the characters. The background stories of both Rhett and Tori made me understand their behavior and choices so much better. The fact that Tori and Rhett didn't automatically jump into bed together and say they loved one another made me happy. It happens in a lot of books that right off the bat they sleep together and say they love each other the next day. I will definitely remember this book.
So why not 5 stars? I missed a few things. For one I would've liked to know more about Rhett's career. His team is briefly mentioned, but not that much. Also, I would've liked to know a bit more about the show. I felt that it went really fast. Of course the author couldn't write out the whole show, but it felt a bit rushed for me. And last, but not least Rhett wasn't my favorite athlete of all the books I have read. Don't get me wrong. I could definitely see him as a bookboyfriend and the chemistry between Rhett was definitely there. He just didn't have enough swoon factor for me. I would definitely recommend this book to others and I would read more from this author.
Rhett Williams' is an Aussie Football star who has had one too many scandals attached to his name. Now his club's throwing down an ultimatum, if he wants to keep playing on this team, he needs to clean up his bad boy image. But the catch is, he must go on a reality TV show to reinvent himself, while trying to find love. He has no choice except to do this show, as his family and their farm means a lot to him, and he doesn't want to play for a team that takes him far away. Tori Winchester is a career focused woman, who has no desire for relationships. But when Rhett shows up for her to mentor him on the show, she finds herself seriously attracted to him. As she spends more time with him, she quickly learns that he's not the bad boy that the media has painted him to be, but they both have contracts that prohibit them from acting on their attraction. This was the first time that I've read anything by Leesa Bow, and I can honestly say that I'm a new fan girl. I LOVED LOVED LOVED every minute while devouring it in one sitting. Her brilliant writing style had me 100% captivated cover to cover, leaving me foaming at the mouth for more by the end. Rhett and Tori were amazing together, as their flammable sparks lit up my room, and when they ignited, the FIERY FLAMES of sexy time threatened to destroy every pair of knickers in my house. With loud f-bomb dropping worthy twists, I was kept on the edge of my seat, while the well placed humor kept me laughing hard at other times. I could go on gushing all night, so I'm just going to end now with HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDING Winning the Game to ALL!
*Read more of my reviews at Whoo Gives A Hoot* Winning the Game was my very first Lessa Bow read so I was super excited to give this book a chance and wow I am glad that I did! I loved every second of this story, although at times the two leads, Rhett and Tori had me yelling and wanting to throw my kindle across the room in frustration because hello these two were perfect for each other. Overall, I was really intrigued by the concept of this story and I thought that the author did a phenomenal job with character development.
Being a blogger who loves free books, I have the tendency to sign up for new books that catches my interest. But because I suck at organizing stuff and noting what I signed up for, it came as a surprise, and a good one for that matter, when I find Winning the Game on my Kindle app.
I’m not really a sports person, so it delighted me that the technical stuff were at a minimum and just get to enjoy the story. It was also my first time to read a book set in Australia. It was nice reading something new every now and then. The story flowed smoothly and light. Although the timeline may have been a little inconsistent for me, I’m not really sure if I just missed something. One of my pet peeves in books are those inconsistencies, but since the story progressed good and it I'd catch my attention, I let it slide (and I’m still thinking that I may have just missed or misinterpreted something). Although you kind of expect what the ending would be, the story was full of thwist that you are still on your toes on how exactly it will happen. The plot itself is something new to me so it’s kind of interesting. Unfortunately, it can only hold my attention for some time. I was intrigued enough to finish the book but it didn’t really held into me for me to forego my sleep. So I’d say it was just on the okay side. Also, there were scenes that I didn’t really see the point of it being there. I mean, it didn’t really so much to accentuate anything or prove a point in the story.
The characters were portrayed pretty well. I like that Rhett was a family oriented guy and at what lengths he would go just for those he love. And despite being a player, he wasn’t much of an ahole. I just didn’t really feel that he was a “bad boy”, unless I really did miss the whole point. Tori was okay. She is somewhere in between a damsel in distress and an independent woman who wouldn’t need a knight in shining armor to come and rescue her. While it is nice that she can hold her own in conversation, it’s kind of disappointing that she tends to be on the indecisive side. But I think they complement one another, which is a very good thing in the foundation of a relationship.
Overall, I’d give this 3 stars. Its entirety was okay and not really on the “why in the world did I waste my time reading this”. Just not enough feelings to catch the emotions I wish I could feel and is looking for when I read a book.
First of all I want to thank Leesa for being so kind and sending me a copy for review. It was my pleasure to read it.
Short synopsis: Tori is a TV mentor working for a reality TV dating show a lá the Bachelor who has has a new client now, the notorious Rhett Williams, football star playing for the Adelaide Blackbirds. His Thor looks make girls chase after him like dog in heat and he is definitely not saying no until on of the encounters goes wrong and photos get leaked. His good reputation and the one of his club go down the drain and now to safe both and redeem himself he has to do something completely against his code, doing a dating show a lá the Bachelor to make him look like a gentleman and not the bad boy everybody thinks he is. But of course everything come different as expected.
Now lets go into the review:
I really enjoyed this book so much. NA is on of my favorite genres and Im so happy I discovered a new author through the author sending me the book. I will definitely read more of her books in the future.
Rhett Williams was very down to earth and humble which I really enjoyed and was not at all the typical bad boy that I was expecting. I really loved reading his POV and his appearance as didn't hurt, I mean who doesn't love a 6'5'', blond, blue-eyed football player who looks like freaking Thor. I really think Thor was originally from Australia I mean hello Chris Hemsworth and Rhett Williams are prove enough, right?
Tori was first portrayed as this career centered, no-time-for-anything-else person which she was at the begging yet but after a while she was less stuck up. She had her reasons to be like this though and to have her guards up. Thats what I loved too that both main characters were flawed and not perfect. They had both stuff to work through. Im not going into more detail with the characters because that might be spoilery.
This book had lots of drama and sexy times, reality TV, a hot Aussie Football player and just all in all everything a NA novel needs and I can 100% recommend this book to you guys. Go grab you copy now
Rhett is a playboy football player who finds himself at the mercy of a reality TV show to rid him of past mistakes. Its supposed to improve his image and show the world he can be a gentleman and commit. His participation in the show is essential for him to move forward with his football career. Following the biggest mistake of her life and a rocky relationship with her parents, Tori is focused on one thing, her job and her potential promotion as producer. Tori is assigned to mentor Rhett and coach him into being the perfect gentleman on a reality TV show similar to the Bachelor, but Rhett can only go through the motions because he truly wants to be with Tori. Tori, however, plays with Rhett's heart more than once and denies herself what could be if she would just stop playing by the rules. Their lives, in and out of the show, are manipulated by others and its difficult for them to take make sense of their emotions and follow what their heart wants, especially Rhett as he is at the center of it all. I really loved Rhett's character and my heart went out to him throughout the book. He wasn't the guy people portrayed him to be, but despite his best efforts that's who everyone saw him to be. He put his heart of the line to win Tori over and to have a future together, but she constantly resisted for one reason or another. I didn't connect as well with Tori's character and I found her to be selfish and manipulative. Some of the things I understood why she did what she did, but the last few chapters of the book I was just upset with her choices thinking it was what needed to be done. She assumed things should be a certain way and was trying to force Rhett to live a certain way, not just in the end but from the beginning of the book. I loved Rhett and Tori together as a couple but I constantly felt there was more give from Rhett and more take from Tori, even in the end there was some hesitation I felt. I also would have loved more of a fallout and exposure from some of the secondary characters as they played a huge role in effecting and controlling Rhett and Tori's relationship. Would have been nice to see something happen to them for the games they played.
i really enjoyed this book. I've never been a huge fan of the reality dating shows and this might be the reason why. Not that I believe all reality shows are like this but it does make you think. Victoria or Tori is a coach for the stars of a dating reality show. She is to get to know them and help them make delicious on how to approach the show or help them to change their image. She is tough and doesn't get personally involved with her client until Rhett. He is charming and extremely handsome but he has gotten himself into a rotten situation. He's a footballer that is known to play on and off the field. Some pictures have surfaced that his team would rather see go away, but they can't. He needs an image change and that is what a dating show will get him. He just never expected to fall in love before the show even starts. They find themselves trying to keep the relationship sort of going while Rhett is on the show but her jealousy about him and the girls on the show makes her make some rash decisions. They can't stay way for each other for long and since there are cameras everywhere, they get caught. I loved Rhett's character. He grew throughout the book and since this is written from both their perspectives, you really get to see what motivates him. He truly falls head over heals for Tori. And it catches him off guard. He keeps focused on winning her in the end.
I’m already a big fan of Leesa Bow (Jardine and Caught Out) so I jumped at the chance to read this book. Once again, I was not disappointed by her or the story.
Rhett Williams is the bad boy of the football world. Unfortunately, his reputation needs to be under control or his life of playing football is over. The solution to this? Go on a reality tv show and change people’s perception of you. Easy enough. Play nice with the beautiful women, choose one, and return to football. That is until he gets a look at his mentor for the show. The one person who is supposed to help match him with one of the contestants ends up being the one he wants. Not good for either of their careers.
Victoria (Tori) Winchester has always been around reality television. Waiting for her big break, she takes on the infamous Rhett as her client that she needs to make irresistible to one of the contestants. Easy enough. It’s her job. But one look at the Aussie footballer and she is a goner. Those blue eyes and messy blond hair have her hooked. But she doesn’t have time for a man or a relationship. She has a career goal and Rhett could ruin it. As hard as she tries to avoid her attraction, she can’t. Both of them could be in trouble.
Leesa Bow has an easy going style of writing that makes reading her books enjoyable. I like the chemistry she created between Tori and Rhett. He wasn’t portrayed as egotistical sports star. He was relatable and caring. If you do or do not like sports stories, this book is a must read. It was hard to turn off the lights and get some sleep. I had to keep reading. That is the type of book Leesa Bow writes. Thank you Leesa Bow for yet another can’t-put-it-down story. As always, I can’t wait to see what you do next. Whatever it is, I’ll be right on it.
To me, this book has the best of both worlds......sports and a close knit farm family!
A bad boy athlete with a reputation for being a womanizer. One who plays the field as hard as he plays the game, but deep down, it's only because he doesn't want to get his heartbroken.
A career focused woman who will do anything to get the big promotion, to show that she can make it in show business. She eats, lives and breathes her career leaving no time for romance. She has a don't mess with me attitude and is very driven to succeed.
What a combination! The chemistry and the sparks between these two is phenomenal. He goes out of his way to wear her down and knock down her walls. He brings out a soft feminine side to her that I don't even think that she is aware of.
What happens at the end of the day when they must chose between love and career? Can they walk away from the relationship they built or for the careers they have fought so hard for?
I will admit, this book started off a little slow for me, but once it got going, I could not put it down! I miss these characters already and want more of their story!
Where to start. I guess the beginning is as good as spot as any. The book is about Rhett an AFL player and (Victoria) Tori...or Boss as Rhett calls her...(Privately fanning myself). Honestly from word one...I liked him. Like a modern day Mr Darcy, Rhett is painted unfairly by those who don't really know him well enough to judge, but turns out to have a heart of gold. I am a HUGE sport fan. So this book really did it for me. Tori...I loved her too. I really enjoy reading about strong women, who are not virgins, who are imperfect and who love with their soul. Tori and Rhett may be my new fave couple. I stayed up till 3am to finish this as I just couldn't stop. The genre of this book is Sports romance, but it certainly has its share of naughty bits. Leesa Bow is an excellent author. I would go as far as to say in my top 5 all time faves EVER! Yes she is that good. I only hope Leesa reads this one day and knows that over two very tired nights...I was seriously lost in her book. Take my advice. Give this one a read. You WILL NOT REGRET IT!
Although, I found the story slightly slow at times this book had a refreshing story and I felt like I was behind the scenes of a famous Reality TV show! I have always said that the behind scenes stuff is more interesting than the actual show. The concept of this story installing drew me and kept me reading.
Rhett is a dynamic and complex leading man. We, the readers, are slowing allowed to see the many facets to his personality. He clearly lives up the saying, that you cannot judge a book by its cover.
Tori is a fascinating female lead. She is intelligent, stubborn and fiercely independent. Like Rhett there is so much more to her. She like an onion, we slowly get to see each of her layers.
Rhett and Tori's story is bumpy and full of twists and turns. Although, not a suspenseful story by any means Leesa Bow keeps the reader on the edge of your seat.
Winning the Game introduced me to the work of Leesa Bow. This book is a sports romance. Sports romances are one of my most favorite genres and this book did not disappoint. This story was well written and the character development was excellent. The story was centered around a character named Rhett Williams. Rhett is an Aussie footballer whose reputation has been damaged by his partying ways.. In order for him to get resigned by his team he is sent to appear on a reality show to meet a woman to fall in love with and settle down with. But everything changes when he meets his mentor for the show, Victoria. And so the story begins. Their relationship is an emotional roller coaster. I often wondered if they could survive and overcome the obstacles. I was pleasantly surprised with the story and would recommend reading it. There are sexual situations but they are written in good taste. This is a 5 star read.
Rhett and Tori were two people not looking for one another yet finding each other at the worst time possible.
Rhett your typical good looking athlete was stuck in a bind and made a deal to clear his image and get back to doing what he loved; football! Little did he know that on this journey he'd meet the gorgeous Tori who was not looking for love, especially with someone like Rhett! After time together they both fell for one another and found themselves making their own rules!
I loved their journey and how it all worked out in the end! Although I loved their story there were times when I felt the story dragged and maybe parts could've been condensed a little! I did like the twist of reality tv and the surprises along the way!
A basketball career crushing knee injury sidelines Aubree. An embarrassing moment where she almost tosses her values away like a dry leaf in a breeze. What does she do, what most of us want to do...run. She takes off overseas travelling for a few years to lick her wounds from the loss of her goals and Hunter. Returning home to Adelaide she knew she wouldn’t be able to avoid him. He is her best friends cousin and one of Blackbird’s most valued football players. Sometimes looking in from the outside gives you a skewed perceptive. You need to get up close and personal to see the truth. Does Aubree hand Hunter her trust so she can get to know the real him? Does Hunter respect her trust and return it? They are volatile and have a winding road ahead of them.
This was my first book by Leesa Bow and one of the few books that I have read by an Australian author as I tend to gravitate to American indie authors. I am glad that I discovered Leesa as now I have a go to Aussie author! I loved Rhett's character, having confidence and cheekiness without the arrogance and demanding alpha male personality we are seeing all too often these days in books. The chemistry that he and Tori had was fun, passionate and genuine and I was eager to see where their journey would leave them. The story also had such a mix of interesting elements that are not in your typical contemporary romance. I will be adding more of Leesa's books to my list to read.
Great book. Leesa Bow keeps her readers wanting more.. The main characters in this book Rhett (a football player) and Tori (a reality producer) want planning I anything but their careers. Funny how life can throw a monkey wrench into your life's. I enjoyed the journey the author took us on. I needed too keep reading to see where she was goo t to take us next. It did have parts(small parts) that felt dragged on a little bit. Overall it was a very believable store not a fairy tale story. I found myself at the end wanting the story to go on some more only bee cause I didn't want the story to end...I would for sure read more of her books.
I must say these are one of my favorite books to read. Bad boy athlete turned thanks to a love of a woman. I enjoyed Rhett and Tori, they were great together despite all the cattiness that was going on. They had to truly fight to be together. I like the concept of the reality show, I do but I forget about all the dirty that goes on behind the doors. While I know it's all part of the game but I didn't like Ingrid and Grant at all. They only cared themselves and the ratings instead of the people and their feelings. Rhett and Tori had to keep things on the down low for most of this book, which sucked but it was necessary. Blackmail was happening along with not making the team unless he finished the show. They jumped a lot of hurdles including medical issues as well. I enjoyed reading this book and loved most of the characters. I will leave you with this quote I loved from the book and it sums up Rhett and Tori's love perfectly, "No one can tell us what to do. No one will tell me whom to love. I'm done with caring what people think. I want you by my side."
This was an entertaining read for me! I love that it was set in Australia and that the writing and lingo all reflected that. Even though I'm not a huge sports person and I NEVER watch Reality TV, this story was entertaining and I found it to be quite charming as well. While I predicted some things to happen, other things totally surprised me. Honestly, if I were to just browse through a book store and glance at the cover and synopsis, I would likely not pick it up and buy it. But having read it, I know that I would be making a mistake! It was an easy and entertaining read that made me laugh, smile and of course surprised me. Those are all good things in my opinion! Looking forward to more stories by Leesa Bow!
First of all, a huge thank you to the author, Leesa Bow, for sending me an ARC.
I know it has been a good book when I finish it within 24 hours. Really easy to immerse myself in although slightly jumpy at times with the pace. This certainly didn't distract from the story or characters in any way. The main characters were enjoyable, likable and relatable. The book definitely kept me guessing at times.
If you're looking for a light and easy weekend or holiday romance read then this is the perfect book. Overall I really enjoyed this book and the author's style of writing. Will definitely read more from Leesa Bow.
Winning the Game was a heartwarming and captivating story; it grabbed my attention right away from the beginning of the storyline. This is the first book I have read from Leesa Bow. The way she brought these two together was phenomenal. I will definitely recommend this book to other readers in the future.
The love that Rhett Williams and Tori Winchester end up having for each other was so exciting to watch bloom into true love throughout the story. Rhett was a football player for the Blackbirds. And Tori worked for network where he had to do the reality show Contest to straighten out his act. I loved how they fought their feelings for each other at first.
This is is a standalone book. I will definitely be reading more books by Lease Bow in the future.
Rhett is a footballer who gets in trouble. To pay for his sins he needs to not only fix his image, he needs to go on a Bachelor-type reality show. Tori works for the company who puts on the reality show and is supposed to help Rhett drop his "bad-boy" image. If she can accomplish this, she gets promoted and he gets an extension on his contract. The two develop feelings for each other but it gets complicated as not only work ethics and contracts get in the way, but Tori refuses to have a boyfriend due to a previous heartbreak. This book has secrets, heartbreak, manipulation and a HEA. It was a good read.
This book is about Rhett and Tori and their whirlwind forbidden romance. Tori is working as Rhett's mentor and they are not allowed to see each other. Rhett is a football player trying to save his career. Once the story gets going and the last part of it I was not able to put down. I wanted Tory and Rhett to win, I wanted them to fall madly in love and have a happy ever after. I loved learning all about Rhett and his story.
I have this book only four stars because it was tough at first to get into the story line. At about chapter 10 I was hooked and could not put down. Lessa Bow is a strong author but it was written from an Aussie stand point and I am not sure if that was why I was having a tough time.
A first read from Leesa Bow and a thoroughly enjoyable read, while I'm not the biggest sports fan going I enjoyed this book.
Rhett Williams is the star of the show as such and Tori is right up there with him. There are moments that you find yourself laughing at the antics and many more you find yourself wanting to throttle or slap the pair.
An enjoyable read and look foreword to what comes next from Leesa.
This book is about what most consider a stereotypical star athlete thinking he is a god. He unluckily gets busted by the media and fans and has to make amends. His unfortunate luck leads him to a reality show where he is the lead and has to choose a mate. Of course that's truly impossible and he ends up finding love in another way. However due to contract obligations he has to go through with the show and pretend that he is truly finding love amongst the contestants. I found the story well written with a unique storyline.
Honestly, I almost gave up on this book. There were points that I was losing interest but in the end I am glad I didn't. I have never read a book with the same concept of story line which honestly is hard to say in today's world of books. With so many authors able to self publish you run into many of the same story lines. this one was different. The reason I was losing interest was because, truthfully, I had other books I was dying to read that were being hyped. So its hard for me to give a completely honest and fair review. I wish I had come across this one at a time that I was in the mind set for this type of book. I have been reading more of the darker genre lately and this one is the opposite. That doesn't make this a bad book by any means, it just simply means it was the wrong time for me to read it. I the end I am glad I stuck with it.
I thought this book would be perfect for me because I love romance and this one involved a reality show, which I also enjoy watching. But, it wasn't for me. An athlete goes on a Bachelor type reality show to try to improve his image. He ends up falling for one of the producers. But here was the problem for me. Having him swear his love to the producer while making out with the ladies on the show was not the kind of romance I wanted to read. Then when the reality show was over the story line with Tori was strange and did not add anything. I felt like it was just filler. So it was just okay to me.
OMG, what a great read this book is. This is my first book by Leesa Bow and I am so happy to have found this great Australian author. I found it so refreshing and entertaining to read a story set in Australia, my home country. I loved the Aussie lingo and references. The author’s style of writing is very good, her description of her characters made you feel so much of their emotions. A must read!!!!! Check out my full review at readingfortheloveofbooks
I have a new founded love of reading books set in a different country then the US. Even Australia uses different words than us. I found myself googling a lot. I enjoy it because it broadens my vocabulary. Now on to the book. I love how Rhett is cocky, yet still cares what his mom thinks. I loved the loved the passion between Tori and Rhett. I loved the whole book. I can't wait to read more.
