The New Spurgeon's Devotional Bible: Complete in One Volume

Rate this book
This is a two year daily devotional. It is a fully updated and unabridged edition of Spurgeon's 600,000 word classic, originally titled The Interpreter, replacing selections from the King James Version with the English Standard Version. Great care has been taken to retain Spurgeon's views and illustrations while replacing 19th century British English with 21st century American English.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.

Amazing!

I love Spurgeon anyway, but having his thoughts interjected as I read through the Bible was a remarkable joy and gift to me. This is a devotional Bible, broken up into daily readings, meant to be read over 2 years. However, I loved it so much that I finished it in only 8 months! Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend!

Pathetic, vulgar attempt, twists the original work

This editorial is unusable. It attempts to update a classic work, but it fails because it uses corrupted text. An update on Spurgeon’s language would be reasonable, but he is referred to as the king of preachers for a reason.

It is the use of the corrupt ESV which makes this editor’s work unusable. By changing the Bible, you change the truth, and if it is not the truth, it is a lie.

Save yourself the grief and buy the original from Spurgeon. If you want to get into the Bible, use the Bible to do so.

I will NEVER purchase another work by Mr. McReynolds. Now I’m off to get this off my account. I would be embarrassed if someone saw I had this.
