Good book. Something I am trying to do now as I get ready to go overseas, be a minimalist! Why do I need all this stuff. The author makes some good points as to why some of us accumulate so much stuff.
A must for small scale living. Where were you all my life? I am a self-confessed hoarder. I will find some of the advice in this book really difficult to follow. Like the 80/20 concept. It is really true that we keep things because we feel that we might one day need it. The author thinks that with major department stores, we can replace anything. However, I disagree with that. Not only would we need to spend money all over again we once had an thrown away, but stores change their stocks and what they sold in the past, is almost impossible to find again. I think the golden rule should be if you have something you haven't used in a 2-3 years, you are probably not going to use it in the future. There are things in everyone's life that have sentimental value and we want to hold on to them. However, the book encourages the reader to have a more detached attitude towards material possessions. The 'Momento mori' is frightening as I am sure many of us will have surviving relatives who will be put through their paces by trying to sort through the mess we leave behind in our homes upon our death. The book shows a rational approach to material possessions and encourages to be brutally selective and critical whether we need to hold onto everything just because we once needed it. Is a renter's or the owner's mindset better? There is a lot to be said for decluttering our lives and from personal experience I can say that I am calmer in an uncluttered environment. The author's advise on not giving gifts but rather giving experiences at Christmas is a sensible one, creating less clutter. In my family we have been doing that amongst the adults for a number of years. We have all been given hideous or superfluous gifts we know will never use and will just squeeze into the drawers to be out of site. The idea of minimalism is not an easy one to follow, as for some reason many of us are geared towards a gathering mentality, saving things for a rainy day. Aston claims, that minimalism can be freeing which not only saves space but put you in a better frame of mind. This is a very interesting book and I could certainly use an expert at it to come to my house and try to implement some of the ideas.

I had never read a book on minimalist living before. The main reason was because I thought I would be preached at to pair down everything I enjoy to achieve a life style I was not interested in. Well I was gifted this book with the understanding that I would leave an honest review. I have to say WOW this book is wonderful and not at all what I thought it would be. Oh don't get me wrong the book does want you to think about what you have and remove what is not needed. But!!! they don't preach a holy than tho must do it this way idea. Instead the author shows you how to make the decisions of what is important to YOU and what is not. This book also shows how this can be used in many aspects of your life not just stuff. Corinne Phillips does a wonderful job of narrating this book really keeps you listening. I would love to have all my friends and family read this book.
Quick and to the points..........minimal but informational
This is a short book but filled with a number of different subjects and information about getting to living a more minimalist life. This includes decluttering your home, your electronic devices, your wardrobe and our schedule. I found a few things that I had not really thought about before, a few things that were reminders and then a few things that I just could not do as they were not for me. Overall I did like the book and what information the author had included. In the end, as with all "Self-Help" books, you have to decide what you connect with and then decide how you want to incorporate that into your life............deciding what is essential to you.
I received a copy of this book for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
Funny how I spent my post college years accumulating stuff to put in my big house and 3 car garage. As my 3 daughters head into and out of college, I look forward to ridding myself of the same stuff. We come into the world with nothing and leave with nothing. Id like to fill the hyphen between the entry and exit points with rich experience s and meaningful relationships.
This book is an excellent how to guide and I look forward to applying the lessons.
Book is good for short & chill reading sessions before bed time. For those who don’t have any idea about “minimalism” other than minimalisms offer about ”Live with less”, the book gives you “trailer” about what minimalism philosophy is. The book actually says in it aswell that no book or formula capsule would change the way you live. However, author shows which things to consider before dumping stuffs into trash by delving into seemingly shallow but deep philosophy of minimalism by comparing its root to stoicism etc. This book could be your start point if you want to learn about minimalism.
This is the first book I have read on the topic of minimalism. I quite enjoyed reading it. It contained lots of information on the why as well as the how. It wasn’t too long and was a fairly easy read. It has given me the encouragement to start my decluttering journey and not worry about getting it all done in a short period of time. It was a very helpful book.

Minimalist Living: Devlutter Your Home, Schedule & Digital Life for Simple Living (and Discover Why Less is More) by Aston Sanderson was a great quick read. It is a good guide to purging some things and leading a minimalistic life.
