Hot shot reconstructive surgeon Dylan Mitchell has everything going for him - a prestigious career, fantastically good looks, the kind of car his teenage self would have killed for, and recently paid off student loans. Everything should be perfect - but there's a yawning emptiness in him, a loneliness that he can't quench - and wouldn't dare to try.
Brad Cooper can't believe his luck when his new business lands one of the biggest gigs in town - providing security for the local hospital system. He's determined to oversee the team transitions personally; he's worked too hard to get his security business off the ground to have it flounder just because some new hire makes a mistake. He doesn't have time for a boyfriend - and he sure as hell doesn't have time for Dylan Mitchell, the older kid who'd made his life hell growing up.
Dylan is just as surprised as Brad is to run into him at the hospital. He tries to apologize for his past mistakes, but Brad won't give him the time of day. When they are together, sparks fly - but not the good kind. They can't stand one another. But when suspicious things start to happen around McDuff Memorial, they'll have to learn to work together if they want to keep the hospital - and all the patients in it - safe and sound.
But as Dylan and Brad find out, there’s only a thin line between love and hate. Will they discover how much they mean to one another before it’s too late?
HATE/Love is a steamy, standalone gay romance novel, with a happily ever after ending and no cliffhangers.
Ok, so I was kind of on board(I didn't think it was great, but it was okay enough) with this until about the 72% mark. Throughout the whole story we learn that Brad was a Navy Seal. It is brought up often, often enough to not excuse the fact that the author decided to have Brad refer to himself as a Marine during an outing with Dylan. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Then things just continued to go down hill as far as I'm concerned. Both MC's started acting like ridiculous two year olds basically. After a date, Brad gets called into work for an emergency. The FIRST one since he and Dylan had been together. Mind you it was an emergency that was called simply by it's code, that I honestly can't remember right now. The author never bothered to explain it to us either, so thanks for that. But alas........ Honestly the only reason I didn't DNF this one is because I was almost finished with it when it became clown shoes, so I just went ahead and finished it. As you can see from my other reviews of this author's books that this author is really hit or miss for me, with mostly misses. I always give her new releases a try, but only if they are available on KU. I'm not quite sure where I'll go from here after reading this one though. Time will tell I suppose.
Very nice story-line. Very explosive attraction. I enjoyed the love/hate relationship between the heroes and also the twist of the story at the end where there was a little plot of mystery. Overall a really good enjoyable read.
Brad Cooper has just moved to Dekalb, North Carolina to oversee his security firms new contract at McDuff Memorial Hospital. This is the big one that could make or break his fledgling business and Brad can't afford for anything to go wrong. Imagine his horror when he finds that his high school tormentor, Dylan Mitchell, is a surgeon at the Hospital. Back then Dylan had been fat and unpopular, but now he is lean and sexy. Not that that is going to win Brad over. Dylan and Brad go at each other like cats and dogs. The first part of their new relationship is definitely Hate.
Typical of Avery Ford's style, this is a gay romance with a hint of a murder mystery thrown in. Will these two guys ever get over their past? Is someone really killing patients at the Hospital, or is it all in Dylan's tried and overworked head? Ford has a way of making the reader fell comfortable in her world, making them like her characters, and making them want to find out where the plot goes. This is certainly not the typical romance, with sparks flying between the two protagonists. Neither of these guys pulls their punches. This is definitely two alpha males head to head. As usual in Ford's books, some chapters are from Brad's point of view, and some from Dylan's. We amuse as each character definitely thinks differently about the same circumstance.
Brad, once openly gay, has been driven back into the closet by Dylan's bullying. While on the inside he is hiding from hurt on the outside he is a tough guy, an ex-SEAL who has seen action. Much tougher than he was in high school Brad is quite tempted by the prospect of revenge on Dylan. Most male readers will relate to Brad both in his weaknesses and strengths. Dylan, once an amazingly insensitive oaf, has become an educated, refined specialist, used of responsibility, of taking people's life in his hands. He feels when his patients die. He sees that he should really apologies to Brad (Brad just makes that option so hard). Men who have grown from unruly teenagers will relate to Dylan. Many of us have things in our past that we are ashamed of.
Overcoming the past is certainly an issue many face, whether they come face to face with their previous tormentors or not. Being able to leave the past is not easy, but without this we continually re-hurt ourselves by remembering, reliving. Along with this, the book explores the theme that friendship can be found in the most unlikely places. Those we dislike may in fact be a bit like us. Another them runs along the lines of do we really know the people we think we know? We imagine we are pretty good at reading people, but are we?
As with most romances this book contains sex scenes, and some of these are pretty steamy (though not S&M). I guess if you are reading this review you are not conservative, so that should be no problem.
I really enjoyed this book. It was quite different from other romances. I am happy to award it five stars.
I had a hard time wrapping my head around the base premise. I just don't see someone (Brad) who was so traumatized by another's actions (Dylan) giving in just because he is now hot and offered such a lame apology. You were miserable so it was ok to ruin my life?!?!
If I ignored the background premise though the story of two people with baggage, low self esteem and hectic jobs finding their path was good. Like others have said the mystery killer wasn't much of a mystery despite the red herring attempts. Literally wanted to shout at Dylan's attempts to dismiss the whole thing. Secondary characters were fun. I'll try more books by this author.
This was a pretty decent story even if the mystery portion was a little obvious. It could stand to have a little more world/character development that would've helped to camouflage the obviousness of the perpetrator, but it was still a fun ride. My only complaint is that the author doesn't seem to understand that the Marines and the Navy are two separate military branches (since this is not the first or even second time I've seen this author make this mistake, I've concluded it is definitely a lack of understanding).
The hate that Brad had for Dylan over what happened in high school was palpable and visceral. It felt exactly right for a old grudge that never had any closure and was excellently written. This made it all the sweeter when that extreme emotion between the two of them morphed into passion.
Added to that, I loved the mystery of what was going on in the hospital; especially the false trails that kept widening the pool of suspects.
Brad and Dylan have an unpleasant past. Back in high school Dylan was the bully. 15yrs later, not only are they in the same town but also neighbors and work at the hospital.
When Dylan stumbles on some security issues he has no choice but to reach out to Brad. Of course this leads to more than just solving the security issue.
I enjoyed the book and will continue to read about the secondary characters found in this book
I wanted to sympathise with Dylan but his actions which caused irreparable damage to Brad’s high school time were simply too cruel and utterly unforgivable and no amount of thin line between love and hate could overcome that. He was a POS as a kid and teenager but changed which is great, everyone deserves redemption but with this much bad blood, the romance was too impossible for me to believe in. Idk how Brad managed to live with that and still end up with Dylan romantically. In this case, I would rather they just fucked and kept it physical.
At 57% I clocked in who was the murderer so the rest was very predictable. Sexual tension and spice was real hot but the story wasn’t it for me.
I felt like this book really touched on some major issues we all had when in high school. Everyone had that one person who made them feel inferior and terrible about themselves. I found this book to not only be moving but a well thought out direction of what happens after we all grow up and are no longer those snot nosed teenagers.
But fortunately, this was a bully story with a surprising twist to it. Both characters were complexly diverse, with past demons to over come. Luckily, they were able to find a way to do that together.
Loved this book was a wild ride loved though and Avery Ford does it again with his novels and I just love how he writes his stories and this was no different love how Brad and Dylan work through there issues and mange to fall in love and have a happy life together
A well written story that had a few twists and turns. The protagonists were well developed. They were at times exasperating. A bit more editing would have been nice.
I think I would have enjoyed this much more if I’d read it before the rest of the “unlabelled” series. Having already read Fake Groom and Flourish really takes away from this book. :(
What a ride. Dylan and Brad are such an explosive pair. Reading how they go from serious enemies to a couple was a real thrill. Add in all the drama and you've got yourself one hell of a read. This is why I love reading Avery Ford's books. I was very fortunate to receive an advanced reader copy and am voluntarily leaving a review. I look forward to reading Avery's books. They always leave me with a satisfied smile and eagerly awaiting the next.
This was a pleasant surprise. I don't know what I was expecting but I found myself drawn into the story. I loved the dynamics and heat between Dylan and Brad. Some things were obvious i.e. it was very easy to pick the killer but it didn't take anything away from the enjoyment of the story. The premise of the line between love and hate is well written and when the characters are at each other’s throats, you wait with anticipation for the heat to explode in sexual satisfaction. I'm hoping for a book 2 with the neighbours! I was given this book in advance for a review but would be happy to purchase from this author in the future.
An exciting romantic suspense, enemies to friends romance with a lovely HEA. My sincere appreciation to the author for offering this on Kindle Unlimited!
Dylan and Brad couldn't have been more different in high school, or so they thought. Brad was out and proud or as proud as a teenaged boy who is different can be. He has friends, mostly girls and is doing ok when the new kid, Dylan, speaks out and puts the spotlight on Brad. It is ugly and ruined Brad's high school career. Thank God Brad never has to see him again. After the Marines, Brad started a security company and wins the contract to provide security services to a hospital four hours away. When Brad checks in for orientation at the hospital he runs into his worst nightmare, Dylan. Dylan doesn't look a thing like he did in high school and there are many surprises for both in the days ahead. Neither is happy about the situation despite mutual feelings of attraction but as events unfold, they need each other. I really enjoyed this story.
