Lorraine Vus is a princess who has been promised to an American banking magnate since her childhood. She is looking for adventure and love…not an arranged marriage to a man she hasn’t seen in years. She travels to America to join her betrothed and quickly realizes that the boy she met and wrote letters to is not the man she is committed to marry. Thanks to a chance meeting with a local matchmaker, Lorraine gets the opportunity for a second chance in the woods of Northern Pennsylvania.
Milo Murphy moved to America to pick up where his parents left off…farming the land and building a home in Montrose, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, he spends more time mining coal in nearby Scranton than he does tending his property. A looming strike at the mine offers Milo the chance to move to his farm full time. However, he quickly learns that creating a future is a lonely job, so he sends a letter to a mail order bride agency, hoping they’ll send him the girl of his dreams.
The moment they meet, their connection is undeniable. But will it be enough to keep them together as they try to carve out a place on their new land?
Raine grew up a princess in a tiny country where royalty is now more a figurehead position than actual rulers. At a very young age she was betrothed to an American, and while they corresponded over the years they never met again face to face… until now. Raine finally has to fulfill her obligation to marry, and even though her happiness is most important to her parents, she is still betrothed in an arranged marriage. She had hoped for the best but knew immediately that she could not marry this man. It’s difficult to be a loving wife when your husband makes your skin crawl. Uncertain how to avoid her future Raine happens to meet a friend of the family who just happens to be a mail order matchmaker. And this is Raine’s way out. Any man would be better than the one she loathes on sight… or at least she hopes.
I enjoyed Raine and Milo’s romance which also sets up the world for this series. Milo’s parents left their native Ireland to come to America to start over. Milo was left behind to spend years with his grandparents until his parents got settled and sent for him. Unfortunately, his parents died before they sent for him but now he’s living in America, and he owns the property around the lake where they’d planned their home and farm. While the land still needs much work, Milo is working in a relatively nearby coal mine, saving his pay and hoping to soon begin working the land. He accidentally comes across a matchmaking newspaper, and knowing how shy he is Milo decides to take a chance and write about a mail order bride – he didn’t expect the quick answer, or the beautiful woman, and her friend, that soon arrived. Life was about to get interesting.
It’s very easy to get caught up in Mail Order Majesty. The characters are lively and believable, the story entertaining and the ground is laid for an interesting series. Milo and Raine might be far different in personality and upbringing, but they work well together and the attraction is easy to see. There were enough secondary characters introduced that I’m now interested in finding out what happens to them, which is always a way to hook me into continuing – give me something to spark my curiosity and I’ll follow the series. While there is a connection with Kirsten Osbourne’s Brides of Beckham series, this is the beginning of a brand new series by a different author. However, if you’ve enjoyed the Brides of Beckham you’ll be sure to enjoy this one as well.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
Princess Lorraine came to America for an arranged marriage to Theodore. Right from the start, she knew that he was not the one for her. Wanting an escape, she answers an ad from the Groom's Gazette. Hard working Milo wants a wife and places the ad. Will a princess and a simple man make a perfect fit? Looking forward to the next book in the series.
Travel across the ocean to marry a man you haven't seen since 8 because family said to make a good match. Raine is too good for Theodore. Theodore is a real piece of work.
I really liked the book but I don’t know what in big Charley’s game in it it seemed like it just cut off. I didn’t like the man who she knew growing up since he was just after her money and didn’t really treat her as a deserving human being.
Raine, a princess is sent to America to marry a man she met at eight. Realizing she couldn't marry him she becomes a mail order bride. Milo was ready to settle down and meeting Raine he was pleasently surprised. Sweet, short story. Enjoyed
It was an easy read. Pleasant. I would recommend for when you want to kick back and relax. Pleasant characters, but no surprises. Girl wants to get away from lousy arranged marrage. Becomes mail order bride. Keeps huge secret which new husband discovers. Typical sweet ending, but fun.
This story is so well written that I could imagine being an immigrant princess. I could imagine being an immigrant orphan in America to fulfill my parents dream of a life here. Lorraine and Milo was fated for one another if you believe in fate.
I enjoyed this book overall, though I wish it had been longer. It felt like the storyline was rushed and had the book been longer, the characters would have developed more and the storyline would also have developed more.
Simple straight forward story about relationships and how to know when you have found the right one and then stand firm with your choice. The ending wasn't what I expected.
This was short and sweet. I liked the characters and their relationships with each other. There is a happy ending for the couple. Although, it didn't go the way I thought it would.
Enjoyably light hearted reading. Princess marries pauper. Could have had a more descriptive narrative of trials etc of princess to farmer. A good clean read
Sweet, very clean but quite unrealistic. A princess becomes a mail order bride in order to escape an unwanted arranged marriage. Could do with a little more editing. 2.5 stars.
I'd hoped to see more of Raine struggling to perform everyday tasks. As a princess, she would have had lots of failures that could have been both humorous and endearing.
The story of Milo and Lorraine is a wonderful, heartfelt tale of a woman who goes against what has been arranged for her and follows her heart. Milo is a hard-working man who hits the jackpot with a beautiful bride. I loved their story and I hope to see a future book with their friends Charlotte and Charlie. I was thrilled Raine managed to avoid Theodore and find her happily ever after! Kudos to a great addition to the Brides of Beckham series!
