The Dark Tower series encompasses eight books authored by Stephen King. These include The Gunslinger, The Drawing of the Three, The Waste Lands, Wizard and Glass, The Wing through the Keyhole, Wolves of the Calla, Song of Susannah, and The Dark Tower. Book no. 4.5, The Wing through the Keyhole, was written after the conclusion of the series in the 7th book but holds a place between books no. 4 and 5 in the timeline. Except for book no. 4.5, all the books in the series have subtitles. Even though several works of other authors served as an inspiration for this series, the primary inspiration was the poem Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came by Robert Browning. J. R. R. Tolkien was also a prominent inspiration. The books also refer to The Harry Potter series.

Stephen Edwin King (born September 21, 1947) is an American author focusing on genres such as supernatural, horror, suspense, science fiction, and fantasy. Stephen King holds a prominent and popular place among contemporary writers and his books have managed to sell a number of copies more than 350 million. His books have led to several film, television, miniseries and comic book adaptations. The number of his novels is 54, 7 of which have been written under the pen name Richard Bachman. He has authored six nonfiction books and 200 short stories. His novella, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, served as the basis for the widely acclaimed film ‘The Shawshank Redemption’.

The subtitle of this book is Resumption. The first novel in the Dark Tower series, The Gunslinger, sets the stage for the entire story of The Dark Tower. The gunslinger, the primary protagonist of the story known as Roland Deschain, chases the Man in Black across a desert. The quest following the Man in Black has been going on for a long time and the gunslinger is not ready to give up. He wants to find the Man in Black by hook or by crook and has no qualms about sacrificing whatever he has to in the course of his journey. The story also sheds light on Roland's back story and characteristics as he continues his journey and encounters several people. Roland is the son of Steven Deschain, the leader of gunslingers and “dinh" of Gilead. Some of the individuals Roland encounters in the course of his pursuit are ploys used by the Man in Black to evade Roland.
