The gunslinger, the primary protagonist of the story known as Roland Deschain, chases the Man in Black across a desert. The quest following the Man in Black has been going on for a long time and the gunslinger is not ready to give up. He wants to find the Man in Black by hook or by crook and has no qualms about sacrificing whatever he has to in the course of his journey. The story also sheds light on Roland's back story and characteristics as he continues his journey and encounters several people. Roland is the son of Steven Deschain, the leader of gunslingers and “dinh" of Gilead. Some of the individuals Roland encounters in the course of his pursuit are ploys used by the Man in Black to evade Roland.
