Friendship is a million little moments, but can it survive this one? Three friends embark on a luxury cruise to celebrate their ten-year reunion in this heartfelt story of how long-held secrets can catch up with even the best of friends

Life was about living, experiencing and emotions. The good and the bad. You had to laugh to cry. You had to love to hurt. You had to jump to fall or fly.

Best friends Abbie, Jess and Ricki are set to recreate a school trip they took ten years earlier to the historic port town of Albany, the oldest city on the stunning turquoise coastline of Western Australia.

Ricki, a dedicated nurse, harbours a dream she hasn't chased. Is she actually happy or stuck in a rut?

Jess, a school teacher and single mother to little Ollie, had a tough upbringing but found her way through with the help of her closest male friend, Peter. But Peter has bought an engagement ring and is ready to propose to Ricki . . .

Abbie had it all: a career, a loving boyfriend and a future, but a visit to the doctor bears scary news. Her world is tumbling down and she feels adrift at sea.

Ricki’s day to day nursing job had become stale – her superior was a nasty piece of work and while Ricki realised she wasn’t happy, she didn’t know what to do about it. Her live-in boyfriend Peter and she were happy; she loved him dearly but still felt that fission of unhappiness.

Peter and Jess had been best friends since childhood – they had been through much together and Peter knew everything about Jess. Jess lived in a little country town called Wandering not far from Perth with her baby son Ollie. She was a school teacher and loved her work, idolised Ollie and was content.

While Abbie, who was best friends with Ricki and Jess as well as Peter, was settled into her real estate job –and had been thinking of opening her own business one day; she had a great boyfriend whom she was sure she would spend her life with – what more could she want.

The three day cruise on the Pacific Eden from Fremantle to Albany was fast approaching and the friends were looking forward to the escape. Jess was not sure about leaving Ollie – it was her first time away from him, but her mum assured Jess he would be fine. But would the friends be fine on the cruise they’d been looking forward to for so long? It seemed there were secrets they were ALL hiding from one another. What would be the outcome when those secrets came to light? Would the friendships still be intact?

Secrets Between Friends by Aussie author Fiona Palmer was a brilliant, emotional roller-coaster of a ride! I loved the closeness between the friends; the loyalties and love they shared. But the secrets they kept from one another, thinking it was better that way, were heartbreaking. I loved the authenticity of the cruise as well – I’ve been on the sister ship to the Eden, Pacific Aria, and I could imagine the places on the ship which the friends went to – I’d been there too! Secrets Between Friends is a book I highly recommend from an author who is fast becoming a favourite.

With thanks to Hachette Australia for my ARC to read and review.

Some simple, no frills straight forward, easy reading. I have not read this author before, this being her first foray into literature that differs from the author's usual genre of Aussie rural romance.

The author dedicates this book to fellow Aussie woman writer, Rachael Johns, which was very sweet, it seems they are good mates and bonded over a cruise, to spend time together and discuss their writing. That would have have been a lovely few days break, reading, writing and chatting!

A group of 3 gals, all from high school, along with another mate - one of the girl's partners - reconnect and have a mini reunion of sorts. They are all needing a rest and recharge, one busy single working mum; one stressed out nurse feeling frustrated in her relationship and work; and another having gone through a secret break up and just not feeling well within herself. I wasn't too sure why a bloke was attending even though all mates, it seemed to get in the way of a true gals weekend.

Very dialogue heavy, this story tells of secrets and frustrations between girlfriends, and no, not everything ends up plain sailing. I think fans of this author would be pleased with some nice women's contemporary story telling. I found a couple of inconsistencies with the story line, but these very well may have been resolved.

I just love how the idea for this book was born. Two of my favourite West Aussie novelists, Fiona Palmer and Rachael Johns, decide to take a three day cruise together. These two creative minds banded together in the best way possible and hence, Secrets Between Friends was conceived by Fiona Palmer on this high seas author adventure. Fiona Palmer’s latest release takes the secrets held by three close high school friends and airs these problems out on an unforgettable cruise of a lifetime.

Told from the shifting viewpoints of three twenty something friends, who have been close since high school, Secrets Between Friends looks at how a ten year reunion on board a luxury cruise liner, has the power to unveil a number of close held secrets. Each friend is as different as the other but somehow this trio, along with male friend Peter, have kept their friendship alive. For Abbie, life has been a breeze on the career, love and life front, until all hell breaks loose in close succession. Her boyfriend breaks up with her, she quits her job after a run in with her crazy boss and a worrying health condition arises. The cruise with her friends marks the perfect distraction to Abbie’s crumbling life, but can she keep the news of her health crisis a secret from her friends? Ricki is a hardworking nurse who has the perfect relationship with fellow high school friend Peter. Lately, Ricki has felt the need to stretch her wings further afield and do something meaningful with her nursing degree. The arrival of a new colleague at work sparks Ricki’s passion to follow her dreams elsewhere, in more ways than one. It spells trouble ahead for Ricki and Peter, which will all come to a head on the cruise. The final member of this high school trio is Jess. Jess balances her work as a teacher with the care of her son Ollie. Jess is a single mum but she has the unconditional support of her high school buddies, especially Peter, who she has been close with since a young girl. The feelings Jess has towards Peter become confused when Peter announces his intention to propose to Ricki on board to cruise. Jess realises now might just be the right time to take a step away from Peter, so he can concentrate o his relationship and impending marriage to Ricki. However, this isn’t as easy as it seems for Jess and Peter. The cruise plays the backdrop to the revelation and fallout of a series of secrets that are revealed as the ship sails across the tranquil West Australian waters.

Fiona Palmer’s first turn away from the rural romance genre into the field of women’s fiction or life lit as I prefer to label these style of books, is superb. I was impressed by the latest book from Fiona Palmer and I can safely say I enjoyed this book as much as, if not more than her fantastic rural romance novels. Secrets Between Friends is one of those books that has it all for me as a reader; a sensational West Australian setting, varied characterisation and a cracker of a narrative. Secrets Between Friends is a book that simultaneously brought tears of sadness, as well as joy.

The initial appeal of Secrets Between Friends was the familiar and well depicted West Australian setting. It was great to see Palmer move away from the outback based settings of her popular rural romance books and branch further afield to showcase some coastal, regional as well as city suburb based locations for her latest novel. In particular, I loved her sections based in Albany, a port stop for the cruise which the main characters of the novel embark upon. Palmer covers this area with plenty of local detail, providing plenty of great descriptions of the locale to entice state, interstate and international readers to want to visit this picturesque and historical hub of Western Australia.

The move to set the bulk of the action of a cruise ship was exciting and interesting. Although this was a short cruise, I enjoyed the time I was on board with the characters. Palmer gives the reader a good sense of what the cruise ship experience is like, complete with plenty of cocktails, sun and of course the beauty of the sea.

Palmer’s characterisation is solid and the alternating chapters which were shared between the three main characters gave the reader a well rounded insight into the innermost thoughts of these characters. I liked all of the characters in this book, despite the fact that at times I had to question their suspect decisions, actions and secrets. They did frustrate me and they did get under my skin, but they were still a loveable set. Mostly I admired their friendship and willingness to stick by one another despite the busy lives they all lead. The story arc involving Abbie, tests their friendship and really elevates it to another level. Palmer handled this section of the book very well.

Secrets Between Friends incorporates a number of themes and issues, all in the one compelling narrative. Palmer carefully explores single parenting, adultery, the ice epidemic, domestic violence and illness. There is the dominant theme of friendship that beats strongly throughout this novel. There are definitely sorrowful and dark moments in this novel. However, Palmer is careful to offset this tone by the themes of hope, love, family bonds and the achievement of personal dreams.

I appreciated Palmer’s decision to include a moving and poignant epilogue at the close of Secrets Between Friends. I wasn’t expecting it, but it gave essential closure to this heartfelt novel. Don’t forget the tissues though!

Secrets Between Friends receives a five star rating for me, I don’t give these out too often but when I do, it is an indication of a book receiving of my commendation. I look forward to your next addition to the life lit genre Fiona!

This is the first book that I have read by Fiona Palmer and it will not be my last.
The book is about three friends Abbie, Jess and Ricki. They are going on a cruise from Fremantle to Albany as a reunion and a rare opportunity in their busy lives for them to reconnect. Each is harbouring their own guilty secrets and they are determined not to spoil the trip by revealing everything to their friends. However, soon one secret slips and others follow. Is their friendship strong enough to get through their hurt and mistrust of each other?
A lovely story told with humour and humanity.

When I saw this on NetGalley, I immediately requested it, as I wanted to read something by this Western Australian writer and thought that a women's fiction novel would be more to my liking than her rural romance novels that she's come to be known for.

As I was recovering from a horrible head cold, I wanted to read something on the lighter side so I hoped that this was it.

Three best friends, Jess, Abbie and Ricki, plus Ricki's boyfriend, Peter, take a three-day cruise down the West Coast of Western Australia. It's a cruise where lots happen. Secrets surface, feathers get ruffled, communication gets broken.

Besides that, the book was very readable, although occasionally I thought it was too long winded. For whatever reason, I didn't feel any emotional investment with any of the characters, but I did enjoy the familiar settings.

I am sure that many of Fiona Palmer's fans will enjoy cruising alongside the three friends.

I've received this novel via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to Hachette Australi for the opportunity to read and review this novel.

ARC received for an honest review

Fiona Palmer is a new to me author, and I have been on a bit of an Aussie author binge lately. It was also nice to jump into a contemporary romance for a change (not going to lie, a lot of my reading is a LOT more steamy than women's lit!)

We all have secrets (anyone who says they don't is a liar!), and I was curious to see how these secrets would play out amongst such a close knit group of friend.

It did take me a little while to get into the story (I put the book aside for a few days after I started it) however once I picked it up again I read it all in one night.

Our main characters are such different ladies, this might be the reason why I didn't connect with them all. I did connect with Jess and Abbie, but I struggled with Ricki. Not 100% sure why, but it was that way.

Secrets With Friends will take you on an emotional journey as secrets are revealed and our lovelies deal with the fall out.

This was my first Fiona Palmer read, and I am sure I will be reading more in the future.

This novel takes you on an emotional journey that had me captivated! Heart warming and a tear jerker. Loved the setting in Western Australia in Fremantle then on a cruise down to Albany and back. So the physical journey was as captivating as the storyline with a group of friends who you get to know and become totally involved in their world. Loved Jess, Ricki, Abbie and Peter as well as Alex later on.
An easy book to read and one that I would recommend if you don't mind your heart strings being pulled!
Thank you to Netgalley and publisher Hachette Australia for the opportunity to read and review this wonderful novel.

I enjoyed the cruise ship setting - all the more as it was a P&O line ship, which is a line whose home bases are Australian ports. The story was a little predictable in parts, but no less enjoyable for all that. It was a quick and easy read - I finished it on Australia Day (appropriate!) and had only started it the evening before! A great holiday read!

Secrets Between Friends is about three friends Abbie, Ricki and Jess and the secrets that could destroy them. Abbie, Ricki and Jess decided to go on a cruise to celebrate their ten-year reunion. However, for three friends the journey changed their lives forever. The readers of Secrets Between Friends will follow to see what changed Abbie's, Ricki's and Jess's lives forever.

I love reading Fiona Palmer's books and Secrets Between Friends was no different. I like Fiona Palmer portrayal of her characters and the way she entwines then with each other. Secrets Between Friends highlights that Fiona Palmer can write in different styles and still engage her readers with her plots and characters. I like Fiona Palmer descriptions of going on a cruise and how you can have fun with your friends. I was impressed that Fiona Palmer discusses the issues of drugs and what the damage they cause to everyone involved.

The readers of Secrets Between Friends will learn that it is wrong to keep secrets from your family and friends. Also, the readers of Secrets Between Friends will learn about Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

I recommend this book.

Secrets Between Friends is Fiona Palmer’s first venture into Women’s Fiction and I hope it won’t be her last! I can honestly say that this book had me in tears at the end with the epilogue very hard to read, there are very few books that have made me cry!
It tells the story of three childhood friends Ricki, Jess & Abbie who decide to go on a short cruise from Fremantle to celebrate their ten year reunion. Abbie is a real estate agent who hates her job, Jess is a single mum who is a teacher, and Ricki is a nurse who is in a relationship but not sure it is what she wants. They all have totally different lives but are best friends. All of them are keeping secrets from each other. All these secrets are gradually revealed during the course of their cruise, and the consequences will change their lives forever.
Fiona wrote the characters so well, explaining their backgrounds and situations expertly. She touched on many contemporary issues such as single motherhood, domestic violence, drugs, illness & relationships. I was totally absorbed in all their stories – the addition of secondary male characters added to the investment I had in their stories. This was such a great read, at times I thought I knew what was going to happen, then a curve ball got thrown in not once but several times during the course of the story, with not everyone having their happy ever after, but at the conclusion I was quite satisfied with what happened to them all. I loved the setting and I think the research she did with Rachael Johns by going on a cruise themselves made it all the more real.

Best friends Jess, Abbie, Rikki and Peter are about to embark on a 3 day cruise - retracing the steps of a trip they took in High School.
Rikki and Peter are in a relationship, but Rikki is restless and not sure if she can continue to commit to Peter, especially since she has been increasingly attracted to a work colleague. Peter has confided in the others that he is ready to propose to Rikki.
Jess grew up a few doors away from Peter and they have always been very close friends, and now, as a single mum, she continues to keep the secret from Peter that she has always loved him. And none of her friends know the identity of her son's father.
Abbie's husband has been having an affair and has left Abbie, but she's keeping that secret from her friends, especially since she's just had a biopsy done on a lump in her neck so she's more worried about that.
So - as they sail away for 3 days of fun what could possibly go wrong??
The days on the cruise unfold like an episode of 'The Love Boat', complete with themed entertainment nights and a pretty dishy ship's doctor, and when each person's secrets are inevitably revealed and the four head home to deal with the fallout their lives are thrown into more turmoil.
Although at times I found the language a little corny, this was an enjoyable read - enough little surprise moments to keep me going, and even some tears shed at the end.
A good story about the importance of friendships and what matters in life.

Secrets Between Friends is Fiona Palmer’s first contemporary women’s novel. Best known for her rural outback novels, I was very much looking forward to this change in genre as it’s one of my favourites. Fiona didn’t let me down and I found myself laughing and crying along with high school besties Abbie, Ricki and Jess as they all embark on a cruise that will change their lives forever.

With a cruise ship as the majority of the setting, Secrets Between Friends is the perfect holiday read. I have never really wanted to go on a cruise but when I finished reading I found myself seriously considering a short cruise trip, for a week or so. It sounded like so much fun with all the shows, the many places to eat and the opportunity to relax by the pool! With all these exciting times, setting the scene on a ship was genius because it also meant that the girls couldn’t escape their problems. Another great idea was telling each girl's story in the first person because I felt like I was walking in their shoes. They became family as I got to know them through the highs and the lows. Dealing with a variety of issues like friendship, infidelity, the right to life and drug addiction, the twenty something girls are forced to face their fears and turn to one another when the storm hits.

There’s Abbie whose biggest secret is about her boyfriend. Until she speaks her mind at work and has an appointment with the doctor before the cruise, giving her devastating news. I was happy that Abbie found love in a most unexpected place despite everything in her life colliding. She deserved something finally going right with her after all that bad luck that came in threes. I also strongly admired Abbie because she spoke her mind without fear and lived life her way no matter what others thought.

Abbie’s bestie, Ricki, was a caring nurse who was trying to figure out what she wanted in life. Ricki made some moral decisions that I didn’t agree with that quickly become a secret between her and Abbie. I soon came to understand Ricki’s action and I was relieved when the truth came out. It wasn’t fair to those who loved her even though it eventually allowed Ricki to find her path in life. Her path in life is to be applauded because it’s a selfless job that not everyone can do.

Out of the three, Jess was probably my favourite. A teacher like myself, she is a mother who deeply cares for her son and others around her. Jess often puts her needs before other, especially when it came to who the father of her son was. This would be her biggest secret and it caused a lot of pain when it slipped out who it was. Even though I guessed who Ollie’s father was, it didn’t detract from the story because it made sense in the scheme of things.

Even though Peter wasn’t one of the girls, he’s a major character in the storyline that I grew to love. A warm and caring man, he has been good friends with all of the girls since high school. Even though he is dating Ricki, I felt like he was the fourth best friend. He is there for all of the girls in their times of need with a shoulder to cry on. Like all people, Peter had his flaws and it takes a tragedy for him to open his heart.

This is a trip of a lifetime that will have you thinking about your next holiday plans!

Secrets Between Friends is the latest novel from Australian author Fiona Palmer. Best known for her best-selling rural fiction, Secrets Between Friends sees Fiona tackle the broader genre of contemporary women's fiction.

The novel tells the story of three friends - Abbie, Ricki, and Jess, who have been friends since high school.  And then there's Peter. Peter who has been friends with Jess since they were six years old, and who is now dating Ricki, even contemplating 'popping the question'. The four friends who are all hiding secrets from one another, take a cruise off the Western Australia coast in order to celebrate ten years since graduating high school. What is meant to be a fun catch up, soon turns into an emotional ride, when each of their secrets catch up with them.

Although Fiona is tackling a new genre, she has still stayed true to her heart-felt storytelling with believable characters and real-life problems and situations to tackle. Fiona builds her character's worlds in a way that lets you in, without bombarding you with needless backstory. We get only what we need to help move the plot forward, but it's also enough to create empathy for all of the characters and draw you into the story.

It really is the strength of the friendships that makes this novel tick. I particularly loved how close the characters were, yet they still held some from each other. I think this is something we can all relate to, no matter how close we are with our best friends.

Fiona sets the scene beautifully. From stunning Fremantle, to aboard the Pacific Eden cruise ship, you felt you were experiencing the excitement along with the characters. And the Western Australian coast line sounds superb. It definitely made me add a WA cruise to my bucket list!

The story is an emotional journey that will have you feeling all the feels. And just when you think things look they are resolved, Fiona hits you with something way left of centre. A bombshell I wasn't expecting, but one that made the story and characters' journey so much richer. The last couple of chapters, along with the epilogue were so very touching. (Spoiler: you will need tissues!)

I remember thinking half-way through the story (which I read in only a couple of days), that it was a great light, summer read. But by the end, I decided that description would not do the book justice; it is so much more. It is rich, meaningful, poignant, heartwarming, heartbreaking, and will make you realise the value in such special friendships, even more that you do already.

Fiona Palmer has branched out of her rural romances and has done an amazing job with this book! The tale of three friends is very endearing and full of twists and turns!

Fiona Palmer is known for her romance novels by far more than anything else. When I saw that she had this book coming out I was super excited because she is such a master at romance, but when it came to this book it was completely different than I was hoping it would be.

Do hope you write more of this genre Fiona Palmer. I do love your usual genre, but, this was just a lovely read. Loved every character, all of them. Can't choose a favourite really. A perfect school holiday read for me. And, so true to life. Loved how you dealt with Abbie's character at the end. Perfect!! Loved Jess and Peter. Loved the setting.

This is Fiona Palmer’s first foray away from her strong background of rural fiction/romance and more into women’s fiction. Jess, Abbie and Ricki have been best friends since school and Jess and Peter have been best friends since childhood. Peter and Ricki are now dating and the three girls thought it’d be fun to celebrate their ten year anniversary graduating from high school by revisiting Albany, a place they went to for a school trip. They decide to take a cruise – a few days of fun and cocktails. Their girls trip gets derailed slightly when Peter decides to come with them and use the trip as a way to further his romance with Ricki.

Firstly, I loved the setting. Fiona Palmer has been setting her books in rural Western Australia for a long time, which I always enjoy but it was quite fun to board a cruise ship with the characters. I’ve never been on a cruise ship before but the idea of a short cruise is appealing. I’ve never visited WA either so perhaps that is why I always enjoy visiting it so much in fiction. It’s a way to experience it.

Each of the women are hiding secrets – some more serious than others. Abbie is hiding a lot about her life and in particular about something that she’s just discovered which is hanging over her head on the cruise. Ricki is feeling a bit restless, perhaps not even realising what the problem was until someone reignited feelings in her about her job and about her life. And Jess, well Jess is carrying two intertwined secrets which definitely threaten two of the friendships she holds dearest.

Okay so as well as things I did like about the story, there were a few things that I did have trouble with. Some of those revolved around the secrets, which seemed strange. I mean, I understood why some things were kept secret, as difficult as those were but the reasoning behind keeping some of the lesser secrets kind of confused me. Also – there’s some people that behave quite horribly and I didn’t really find it okay because “both of them did it”. That’s not good reasoning to me, especially as they were unaware of each other doing it and it felt quite uncomfortable to read. It’s also a bit of a deal breaker for me generally, depending on the circumstances but I didn’t feel as though these ones felt like enough. One element of the story felt almost too good to be true, like a convenient out for the other to occur in a way. And some of the fallout felt quite one sided, like some of the issues on both sides weren’t really discussed or explored, it was really more focused on one particular side and the people involved in that situation.

I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone but I did have some trouble connecting to or liking some characters because some of their actions were so dramatically unpleasant and unnecessary. But I did admire the friendship between them and the fact that it was built to withstand an awful lot and that they were remarkably understanding about each other’s secrets and indiscretions – but I wasn’t sure if that understanding came from a place of love and friendship or because several of them were doing the same thing and couldn’t really be angry. A lot of drama certainly came out during this brief cruise though, that’s for sure!

All in all this was a bit of a mixed bag for me – loved the setting and some elements of the story. The idea of the four of them going on the cruise was a lot of fun and a perfect place for secrets to come out because they can’t really escape, they have to face each other and sort things out. But some of the secrets made it difficult to really care about the characters, who were being a bit selfish and unfair to those that they cared about. And I wasn’t really expecting a part of the ending, which had some bittersweet elements to it. If you’re looking for a full and total HEA this might not be the sort of story that you’re after.

I’ve enjoyed Fiona Palmer’s rural romance stories for many years now and I was excited to hear that she was writing a new novel, Secrets Between Friends, which was contemporary fiction. It’s still set in Western Australia, but this time the reader ventures off from the city on a cruise to the south of the state. We follow three women who are best friends and one man as a holiday cruise turns to drama on the high seas. The story is interesting (who doesn’t love a story on a cruise ship?) but I failed to connect deeply with the characters and the twisted complications of their secrets wore me out at times.

There are three main characters in Secrets Between Friends and each chapter is told from one of their points of view. Abbie is the one who the other girls think has it all – career and boyfriend all sorted. But Abbie’s boss is a nightmare and her boyfriend has been having an affair for some time. In quick succession, she’s left alone without a job. Then a visit to the GP becomes tests and surgical procedures, with bad news. Nevertheless, Abbie keeps it to herself and joins the cruise. Ricki is a nurse who is in a relationship with Peter, but her dreams don’t coincide with his. A liaison with a fellow nurse off to explore the world has her wondering what her next move should be. Finally, Jess is a single mum and teacher. She’s best friends with Peter (yes, Ricki’s Peter) who knows the secrets of her childhood. But as Peter announces his plans to propose to Ricki, Jess is determined to cut herself off from the man she loves.

So it is three unsettled characters that set sail on the Pacific Eden with Peter. This is where the drama starts as the secrets become open knowledge when combined with alcohol, hurt feelings and everything else. The narrative here is really, really action packed with a twist in the plot here, a turn here and a blind corner over there. I did find it exhausting at times, having to work out who knew which secrets and which ones were yet to unfold (plus who was still speaking to who). I felt that Ricki, Peter and Jess were not at their best as characters here. Jess was too insipid at times, willing to play the victim and not get in there and grab what was hers. Peter…well, at times I didn’t know why he had the hearts of Ricki and Jess. He seemed to dither in the middle, taking whatever he could get and not making any choices. Abbie hung around being moody, but after the cruise it was her character that really shone. Perhaps it’s because she was the one who had deep, life-changing problems or maybe it was because the others grew up and stopped squabbling. Post cruise, Secrets Between Friends is poignant, mature and stylish. Even though the plot is not the happiest, it was my favourite part of the book. Here, Fiona Palmer really shone in her exploration of Abbie’s motivations, choices and growth, creating the perfect ending for her. I can’t say that I was too bothered about the other characters as they were quite immature!

Even though Secrets Between Friends isn’t my favourite Fiona Palmer book, I’ll still eagerly pick up what she writes. The last part of Secrets Between Friends shows she has the power to create a strong character and a tear-jerking story.

Thank you to Hachette for the copy of this book. My review is honest.

The opening to this story is a gorgeous and heartfelt meeting-of-soul-mates. Jess and Peter are so obviously meant for each other. So, based on the blurb, I'm thinking this is a story about frustrated love and the journey to either the acceptance of what is, or the courage to change it. And it's exactly that, a lovely story about Peter and Jess sorting themselves out.

For me though, the story was written in a passive style that refused to allow me to immerse myself. Bear with me, the story does redeem itself... Feel free to skip the negatives and go straight to 'Redemption'. It's underlined for your convenience.

Telling not showing I'm told every step of the way what the characters were feeling and what was happening, often repeatedly: ...the two were like a sugar overdose in a sun-filled room with rainbows and fairies - it's a lovely line, but we already knew their oneness. ...he was her home, her safe place.... Yep, did I mention we knew that already?

Contradictions Often this telling was at odds with the showing: Jess and Peter are on the beach. Guilt is eating at Jess. She's confused, she's keeping more than one awful secret from Peter, she misses her baby, and she's just managed to get her breathing and tears under control. But their behaviour?! arm in arm they strolled along the beach, kicking sand, towards the coffee shop. This is a girl who wears her heart on her sleeve, not a cold, calculating sociopath able to keep all her troubles repressed.

Info dumps Such as this forced sentence, a bit much for me on page 6:'You bet,' said Ricki van Leeuwin as she passed her colleague Jolene in the hospital corridor.

Mixed messages ...they headed for the walkway, Welcome written along it, their access to the ship. The six orange life boats stood out against the vibrant white of the ship, which she hoped didn't have to be used. Why are you worried about the... Oh... I see now.

Head-hopping Jess sits beside Peter, his eyes masked by dark sunglasses. He doesn't stir, yet she somehow knows he returned his gaze to the pool.

Weak motivations Jess, Peter, and Abbie run around frantically looking for Ricki, hoping she's not hurt. But they can't find her anywhere and their worry increases. So they stop looking for her. And change the subject.

Redemption But I put these personal dislikes aside, allowed myself to be passively led to where I was supposed to go... and then I found the gem. Abbie, you star! This is not about Peter and Jess at all, but about Abbie and her depth and surprises. She was a mystery unravelling before my eyes, becoming more and more real. Initially hard to tell apart from Jess's voice, Abbie at first appears as a victim, hiding her light under a bushel, seemingly for some kind of misplaced martyrdom. But her flower unfurls. She single-handedly does all the growing in the story.

All in all, I'm glad to have read this story - I just wish I knew what it was really about when I started. Abbie will stay with me for some time yet.

This is such a beautiful, moving, touching story about three friends who met at school and just bonded together forever Jess, Ricki and Abbie there is also Peter who started out as Jess’s best friend but became best friends to them all and then partner to Ricki. Jess is a single mum to Ollie and a teacher now living in the country, Ricki is a nurse and lives with Peter and Abbie is a career girl in real estate. They plan a reunion on a three day cruise to Albany Western Australia to party, reminisce and just have fun, Peter has plans as well and joins them for this journey, little do they all know that secrets will be uncovered and their lives will change forever.

Jess will go to any lengths to help her friends she loves them all but has kept a secret for some time now that will impact on them all, although the girls know that she has loved Peter forever he is as close to family as possible, they were neighbours growing up and with the home life Jess had Peter and his family were her life savers, but maybe now it is time to cut ties with Peter and stay in the country town she teaches with her gorgeous son Ollie.

Abbie has just had her life turned upside down by her partner and the job that she loves is not what it used to be and with so much going on this cruise is going to be a blast and when she gets back then it will be time to think about the future and she is determined to keep her secret and be strong as always.

Ricki has been happy with her life she loves Peter but her wish to travel and nurse in under privileged countries is getting stronger especially after having met a new nurse at work, is it time to make a change in her life?

The time for the trip arrives and with each one of them having things on their mind this trip turns into a roller-coaster of secrets that have been kept from each other which is so out of fashion for them as they are just so close but these secrets are doozies that will leave each of them shocked and hurt in some ways but as true friends they need to pull together and be there for each other.

I really loved this book the bond these friends share is just beautiful the love and the strength they show through the hurts will have you turning the pages but do make sure you have the tissues handy because there will be tears but smiles as well, thank you MS Palmer for a story that is going to stay with me for a long time to come and yay for cruising I have been on a few and the memories of being on the ship are good.

3.5*

I was keen to sample Fiona Palmer’s first time dalliance out of her ‘rural romance’ genre. Here is a tale of best friends, Jess, Abbie and Ricki (and Ricki's boyfriend, Peter) who decide to take a three-day cruise down the coast of Western Australia. As the title of the book indicates, there most definitely are some very serious ‘secrets between friends’ that all come to a head during this short cruise. Will their long term friendship be able to withstand the revelations and confrontations that, in the confines of ship life, there will be no escape from?

Once again I reveled in the setting - Australia - and this time, sailing on a familiar cruise line. As the girls and Peter make the most of life onboard the ship and the trip to Albany and back, there was much to enjoy. Being a ‘cruiser’ myself, I found the descriptions realistic and accurate. For those of you in any way interested in cruising, this gives a lovely little insight into life onboard.

‘Gee, they really pack a lot of events into a day aboard the ship don’t they?’

‘... that was life on the ship. You could partake in all the activities, some or none.’

The concept of secrets amongst friends is not a new one, however, I just found their tiffs and selfishness difficult to swallow at times. Sadly, I didn’t really enjoy the characters that much because of it.

‘Problems going on with my friends. Secrets and indiscretions, surprises.’ She shrugged.
‘We came here to celebrate, but today all we’ve done is yell at each other.’

Each of the girls have personal issues to contend with from the desire to follow a dream, to single motherhood, to health concerns. So there is much to relate to and it was interesting to see how events played out. I appreciated the realism and how confrontational certain aspects were presented and handled. I am sure that many of Fiona Palmer's fans will enjoy taking a trip alongside the three friends and appreciate that life is not always smooth with bonds often being stretched to breaking point.

‘Life can seem great one minute and then a shit-hole mess the next. What do we do, Abbie?’
‘We do the only thing we can do. Live each day as it comes, try to be good people while pursuing happiness.’
It sounded easy. But it wasn’t.

blurb from web:

Friendship is a million little moments, but can it survive this one? Three friends embark on a luxury cruise to celebrate their ten-year reunion in this heartfelt story of how long-held secrets can catch up with even the best of friends.
Life was about living, experiencing and emotions. The good and the bad. You had to laugh to cry. You had to love to hurt. You had to jump to fall or fly.
Best friends Abbie, Jess and Ricki are setting sail on a cruise ship, rekindling the excitement of a school excursion they took ten years earlier to the historic port town of Albany, the oldest city on the stunning turquoise coastline of Western Australia. But are they truly prepared for what this voyage will reveal?
Ricki, a dedicated nurse, harbours a dream she hasn't chased. Is she actually happy or stuck in a rut?
Jess, a school teacher and single mother to little Ollie, had a tough upbringing but found her way through with the help of her closest male friend, Peter. But Peter has bought an engagement ring and is ready to propose to Ricki . . .
Abbie had it all: a career, a loving boyfriend and a future, but a visit to the doctor bears scary news. Her world is tumbling down and she feels adrift at sea.
SECRETS BETWEEN FRIENDS is a poignant novel of romance, family dynamics and friendship. Through her highly relatable, sympathetic characters, beloved Australian storyteller Fiona Palmer writes about issues, experiences and emotions we have all faced while posing the ultimate question: What is really important in this life?

My review:
This one was just average for me. I liked the characters but Jess and even Peter grated on me. The didn’t seem real.
I liked Abbie — who hid being sick and breaking up with her boyfriend and losing her job from her closest friends. I found it difficult to believe she’d snag a handsome doctor on the cruise, and he supported through her illness (even though she died, which was sad as she was my favourite character).
Book was ok, just rolled my eyes in a few parts.

An odd little book, this didn't turn out how I expected, and not entirely in a good way. The premise was engaging - a group of best friends on a cruise to commemorate their graduation. Ricki, Jess and Abbie have been mates since primary school, completely entwined in each other's lives, so much so that Jess's long time best friend Peter tags along on the trip. He's also Ricki's boyfriend. Over the course of the three day cruise (which feels much longer...), secrets are revealed and relationships tested. Of course the book was a little predictable, as it clearly followed chick lit tropes. Each of the main women were strong and independent and going through a journey of discovery! And that's where I didn't love the book. It was all a bit too forced for me. There was too much telling me about what the girls were experiencing, rather than letting it develop holistically and in depth. I felt that it took to long to actually get on the cruise. The relationship between the characters also bothered me, because again we're told often how close they are and how amazing their friendship is but that didn't transfer through the writing. The dialogue was odd, a bit stilted and often cringey. I just didn't by that they were best friends forever. As for the Peter and Jess relationship, that was just odd. It was clear what was meant to happen, but their relationship was just weird. For him to be contemplating a wedding to someone else yet totally defaulting to Jess? Again, it didn't ring true. It bothered me because I felt that there was potentially a good story here but the book lacked the charm, humour and sparkle to convey it all. I didn't particularly like any of the characters but the very end with Abbie and Alex was probably the best and strongest part. It wasn't the way going read I expected, and didn't quite have the goods to fully achieve what it set out to do. I did finish it but I wanted a lot more and to be honest have read similar stories that were more engaging.

This is the first (and only) book I have ever won in the giveaways so thank you!
I didn't think I would like it so much even if it was free as it is not my usual reading material. For the first few chapters I was a bit frustrated by the errors (it was a proof copy so to be expected) and I thought it would be the type of chick-lit to be read on a cruise (suitable since the majority of the story is on a cruise).
I was wrong!
"when I was a kid, sure. But as an adult I think I've forgotten to look up and even see them. We're so hopeful as kids-- it's easy to believe in magic--but now I feel jaded, like life is passing me by" a timely reminder to stop and enjoy the little things in life which was really the key message I took from this book.
All the main characters have secrets and none are sharing them with their "best friends". How many of us keep things to ourselves because either we don't want to worry those we love or because we are not sure if they will actually support us and accept us? Communication and honesty were also key messages. The characters have been friends since school and of course have drifted a little as they moved on with adult life. They all have to learn to open up to each other again and to trust in the support offered.
Life can be horrid at times but each of us can choose how we deal with it. These characters all make mistakes and hurt those they love at times, but friendship is not perfect and when it really matters they would do anything to help.
The second half of this book should not be read in public if you cry at books (I did lots) but it should be read. I read the whole book today. Started at lunch and finished at 9.30 pm having completely missed dinner. It is a page turner.
