Someday Elizabeth hopes to visit the castles of Scotland and England personally. However, she has been to the jungles of Peru and Machu Picchu which inspired her novels, Curse of the Condor and Bistro Bachelor.
Onyx - slightly strange story about an English nobleman's baby, who should have been dumped at sea being brought up as a Scot. Loveday is supposedly similar in age to Onyx, (never having known her father, who was murdered the night Onyx was born) however she has childhood memories of the vibrant colours in the Book of Hours and two thirds of the way through the novel, her mother tells her that she used the love charm in the book stolen 20 years earlier to try and help Loveday and her first husband, and that she had the charms written in the Book of Hours to protect her daughter. However, if you ignore this dichotomy it is a good read and the author has woven the Black Death (though not the horrific cures that were tried) into the story, which gives a glimpse into that period of history.
Aidan - a madman MacKeefe with a loose tongue and an eye for the lassies, when he set eyes on Effie he is sure that she is the woman of his dreams. Effie is descended from a famous Scotswoman who was kept prisoner in a cage by the English for 4 years and is a heroine in Scotland but what cares Effie about her heritage and being true to her roots, when her sister Coira's life is at stake. A fun read, about impossible choices; with the Stone of Destiny at the heart of the story.
Ian - a ladies charmer, with hidden dark secrets and Kyla, younger sister of Aidan who has been in love with Ian for years. I'm a sucker for a friends to lovers story and so I'm not surprised that this was my favourite of the three novels in this boxset. I loved how fearless Kyla was and thoroughly enjoyed their adventures with the MacTavish's.
BK1 Onyx 5*-OMG great story! What a great start to the series Onyx/Dagger- (the brother of the Sisters of the Dagger)Wonderful complex character! He kidnaps a Lady in trying to save his mother from going to the gallows for murder. Lovelle/Loveday- is searching for a woman who killed her father and stole the Book of Hours to help her mother. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this captivating story that is wonderfully written with unforgettable characters! There were some fun twist and turns but all held true to the protagonist characters, like Lovells character. I am sad to see the old hag go but her presence was explained well and this story. Thoroughly enjoyed the ending and how everything mesh together and right on Valentines day. Their story has a marvelous and romantic HEA!
Bk2 Aiden 4.5* Aiden- was helping the clan guard the Stone of Destiny. Effie MacDuff- and her sister were captured by the English and held in a cage for all to see. She was given a choice to help free her sister but she would have to betray her country. I enjoyed reading this intriguing story that is well written with charismatic characters. This story has bits of drama, action, humor and romance that rolled together wonderfully. Their story has a loving HEA.
Bk3 Ian 4.5* Ian- was found in a castle ruins and they Mackeefe clan took him in. Kayla- always hung around her big brother and his friends and took on some of their weird habits. I enjoyed reading this friend to lover story (although this is not a troupe I like), that is well written with unforgettable characters. This story has lots of drama and action but somewhere in between it all Love blossomed and grew. Their story has a loving HEA. Loved this box series it's great having them all together on my kindle. I love how each of these men had their won special animal!
We meet Onyx, the brother of the girls from the "Daughters of the Dagger" series. Onyx has quite a journey to find himself. He discovers the truth of his birth, and his true family connections. But most of all he finds love and friendship. A really good story.
Book 2 Aidan
This story is centred around the Scottish 'Stone of Scone' , the stone that all Scottish kings have been crowned upon. A fake stone was removed by the English, whilst the real stone was guarded by the clans throughout the years. However, loose tongues had given one English Lord the idea that another stone existed, and he used a young woman, with a threat against her sister's life, to find the whereabouts of the stone. In the same breathe, the stone had given foresight to the woman, to our Highlander hero, Aidan, through a dream. It is a dramatic episode and the characters definitely make you laugh at the antics.
Book 3 Ian
Found abandoned as a babe, Ian wanted to know his roots, however, the time he went looking for answers, he now wanted to forget. Then there was Kyla, a sister to Aiden, Ian's best friend, so even way back in the 14th Century, the Bro Code was enforced. "Do not touch a friend's sister, in an inappropriate manner!" Kula wasn't a child any longer, and she knew what she wanted, however, fate took a hand in how she would get it. Great story!
I will be reviewing each book separately, then averaging out the final stars for a over all rating.
Book 1 Inyx - 5+ Stars This book is a hot exploding force that will just keep you wanting more and more till it is finished. I just could not put it down till the very end. It has nice twists and turns that you just do not see coming!
Book 2 Aidan - 4 Stars The only reason I gave this 4 stars is that the author tell you in the star of the book what happens. It was disappointing and as I knew what was going on it made the read less interesting. But over all it is a very good read. It is fast paced and has nice twists, but again as you already basically know the plot of the story it falls slightly flat.
Book 3 Ian
Has me on the edge of my seat I don't want to read about the bad stuff but can't help reading. It truly is a nail biting start to this story!!
Onyx Aidan and Ian are known as the madmen MacKeef’s of the MacKeef clan. Onyx found that his mother wasn’t really his mother and thought his father wanted him dead. He meets Ladylove and they fall in love. She brings Onyx and his father together. Aidan guards the stone of destiny but has always had a wagging tongue. He meets up with his dream angel but has to help save her sister but was at first deceived and had to save the stone and relocate it. Ian grew up with Onyx and Aidan with Aidan’s brat sister Kyla chasing after them. Kyla fell in love with Ian but Ian wasn’t interested. Kyla was betrothed to Ian’s enemy. Ian had to save her then finally knew he loved her. All ends well with love and family.
I absolutely loved all three madmen MacKeefe and thoroughly enjoyed all three of the stories in this box set. The storylines kept me engaged and the romances of all three MacKeefe friends and their ladies were filled with passion that just steamed right off the pages. Definitely recommend these books!
For the most part very interesting stories. A bit confused with everyone hopping into bed so fast then the big deal about a virgin in the last. Lots of spots with missing or extra quotes but didn't bother marking them. 3rd especially had more awkward bits. 3 star solid I think.
A trilogy of books and stories that keep you interested from start to finish. No clues as to what will come next. So you have to keep reading. I will definitely follow this author. Thank you. ☺
Highland Madness, a boxed set of the Madmen MacKeefe trilogy, is a captivating Highland adventure saga. The books are quite well written with vivid descriptions of the settings and complex characters, strong heroes and heroines and terrific secondary characters that truly add to the story. In each of the books, the hero and heroine have two quests, one to find the path to true love and another to solve a mystery.
In Onyx, Book I, Onyx and Lady Lovelle must find the Book of Hours, a book of prayers and charms stolen by Fenella twenty years before, in order to save both their mothers, his from execution and hers from illness. All they have to do is make it back to Love‰Ûªs castle in time (a week). The adventure begins when Lady Lovelle accuses Fenella of stealing the book and murdering her father (her father had killed Fenella‰Ûªs husband) and has her taken captive. In turn, Onyx takes Lovelle as insurance his mother will not be executed. At the same time, Onyx discovers that Fenella is not his real mother. Two quests: find the book and find his real family. There are many twists and some surprises you‰Ûªre going to love.
In Aiden, Book II, we learn that the MacKeefes, Aiden in particular, are the current guardians of the Stone of Destiny (a coronation stone belonging to the Scots and coveted by the English). Aiden sleeps with the stone under his palette as his pillow and dreams of his ‰Û÷Angel,‰Ûª the woman he is destined to marry. Effie MacDuff and her sister Coira are being held captive because they are descended from the woman who defied the English and returned the once stolen stone to the Scots. To gain their freedom, Effie must find and bring the stone to her captors. When Aiden finds Effie at the Glasgow fair, he believes her to be his ‰Û÷Angel‰Ûª and is thrilled. Fate can be wicked, though. He is not so happy when she helps The English soldiers knock him out and steal the stone (he ignored that part of the dream). Here is where the true adventure begins. Aiden follows the Effie and the soldiers, but they have quite a head start. Many questions must be answered. Can Aiden find and retrieve the stone? What will become of the sisters? If they somehow live through all of this, can Aiden and Effie find the trust and love they hoped for? You will enjoy finding all the answers.
One word describes Ian, Book III, which, by the way, makes a great Halloween read ‰ÛÒ Wow! Aiden‰Ûªs sister Kyla has always loved Ian, who was found as an infant and raised in the household with Aiden and Kyla. Ian still treats her as a kid sister, or he did at the beginning of the story. Kyla is betrothed to a MacTavish as part of an alliance for peace and protection. Ian knows this clan, as he secretly lived with them for a year, and does not trust them. He goes with Kyla to the MacTavish Castle as protection and to try to stop the betrothal. Once inside the castle, Ian finds that he is right not to trust them. How can Kyla be betrothed to a man Ian killed and buried three years earlier? Is there a way to find out what‰Ûªs really going on and to stop the betrothal? Somewhere in the middle of all this, Ian finally realizes that he loves Kyla and now has one more reason to stop the betrothal. It‰Ûªs rough going, but they get help from some unlikely sources ‰ÛÒ some of the MacTavishes, some women imprisoned in a cave by the MacTavish, several clans from the surrounding area, and finally a mysterious beggar woman in a hooded cloak who seems to appear just when she or her information is needed. Who is she? Can they all work together to banish the enemy and try to bring peace? As with the other two stories, there is a second mystery to solve. Is it possible that during this struggle, Ian can learn more about his past and who he really is? Maybe? You won‰Ûªt believe this one! Ian‰Ûªs story brings the saga to a wonderful conclusion.
Highland Madness is a boxed set each can be read as a standalone by Elizabeth Rose. This is an amazing stories. The characters are well thought out and the plot flows smoothly. You will laugh, cry, be angry while reading this awesome series. Thanks
ONYX ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Onyx MacKeefe is used to everyone believing he is the devil because of his odd coloured eyes. He also has a habit of dying and coming back. His mother has been arrested for a murder that happened years ago, and to hope to save her he must return the book she stole. Lady Loveday de Lacy is determine to get the book from her father's murderess. She needs the charms written in it to stop her mother from losing her mind. She has already lost too many of her family. If traveling to the highlands with the sexy Scotsman is the only way, that's what she will do. This is an usual highland romance. Our hero is really quite vulnerable. Our heroine is brave and stubborn. With the plague running through the country travel can be even more dangerous. There are a lot of emotional moments and visits from characters we have met in previous books. This is the first in a box set. I can't wait to read the rest. ********************************* ADIAN. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The MacKeefe clan has got the honour of guarding the Stone of Destiny, and keeping the secret of the fact that the one the English took is not the real one. Adian MacKeefe has been using it as a pillow to sleep on, in the hope it will give him prophetic dreams. His best friends and fellow "mad men " tease him mercilessly when he tells them of the dream he had. Effie MacDuff and her younger sister have been captured by an English lord because of her family's historic connection with the Stone. He will go to any lengths to find and take control of it to give to the English King. Effie must protect her sister even if that means betraying her heritage. Lots of laughs and danger in this second book in the series. The relationship between the Mad Men MacKeefe is as strong as brothers. Their unusual pets also give us lots of giggles. Our poor heroine has had a hard life and it just got a whole lot harder. Great fun. Now I need to read the last in the box set. ********************************* IAN. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ian was a foundling brought up by the MacKeefe clan. He has a darkness in him because he has always wondered about who his real family was. He considers the other two "mad men MacKeefe " like brothers. A man doesn't make a move on the little sister of his best friend. He did try to find his own family but decided he preferred the clan he grew up in. Kayla MacKeefe has followed her brother and his two best friends around since she can remember, but her feelings for Ian are those of a woman not a pesky little sister. She is twenty years old now and her brother and his friends still treat her like a child. This is the third in a series that should really be read in order. There is lots of danger and adventure in this story. As it set around Halloween there is a little bit of a spooky feel to it. Our hero tries his best to be a good man, but carries a secret that affects everything he does. Our heroine is a brave an independent woman, who is fed up with being over protected by the men in her family. A wonderful box set that covers three sexy Highlanders and their strong women. I loved every page.
Truly magnificent! The skillful artistic abilities of the author kept me enthralled. I loved this Highland Madness Series. They are amazing! In Onyx Book 1, Who was Onyx, and why was everyone afraid of him? This wonderful romance kept my interest flowing all the way through to the end. In fact, it was so fascinatingly intriguing that, the farther I delved into the story, the more intriguing it became. The fast-paced, never-ending plot kept me motivated. There was one action-filled moment right after another. Just as soon as Onyx got out of one situation, then he fell head long into another. Just when I thought things were going to calm down, the plot thickened. I loved Onyx's character and the way he would bounce back no matter what situation was put before him. I also loved the way he talked. He was very strong willed.
In Aidan Book 2, Aidan gave Effie a beautiful birthday gift, but what could she do for him in return. Aidan kept getting into trouble because of Effie. Will he have to rescue her? Will she tell him the truth, or will Effie betray Aidan, and loose him because of her selfish deeds? Will she let everything go too far? Now, Aidan is suppose to be the guardian of one of Scotland's biggest secrets. Will he keep the English from finding out where it is, or loose Effie because of it? Some parts of this story made me laugh because the skillful way the author wrote it. And other parts made me feel sad. And as the story raced on, I heard the laughter and felt the sadness right along with the characters. As they laughed I laughed. When they felt sad, I felt sad. I loved the fascinating and fast-paced plot that kept me on the edge of my seat because of the never-ending action through every chapter.
In Ian Book 3, not just a murder of crows but also a raven had been following Ian MacKeefe all day, and right before Halloween. How appropriate, and Halloween right upon us. What was it that Ian would rather forget as he sat on a stool in the Horn and Hoof Pub thinking? And, what was the secret he didn't want anyone to know? Was he about to step foot into more trouble? Take another reckless risk? Without warning? Or even after being warned? Then his mind wondered. Would he ever find true love? At the way things were going, he didn't think so. Then Ian saw the raven again, and got a sensation that was almost like impending doom. Something kept haunting him. Like someone or something was watching him. Would it ever leave him alone, or will he have to face the danger once again? And, as the plot thickens and Ian gets himself into more trouble, will he have to put his selfish ways aside and have to try and come up with a solution to the problem in order to save the clan and maybe get the girl? Through the skillful writing of the author, Elizabeth Rose, the characters just seemed to come alive and leap off the pages. A very intriguing must read.
This anthology includes the stories of three best friends, Onyx, Aiden and Ian, also known as the Madmen MacKeefe for their daring, reckless and often crazy behavior. These tales describe how each the young man goes on a quest and grows and finds peace with some part of himself and his past, and in so doing, opens his heart and life and earns the love and trust of his soulmate. In Onyx, our hero abducts Lady Lovelle when his own mother is taken prisoner by the English. Together, Onyx and Lady Lovelle search for a lost Book of Hours that must be found to save Onyx's mother's life, but his search reveals that everything he believes about his own life is a lie. In Aiden, our hero trusts Effie McDuff with a secret his clan and country depend on him to keep, and she betrays him. He learns that all is not as simple as it seems, and that she may have been coerced into that betrayal, but Aiden will do all he can to right the wrongs done by all parties, including himself. In Ian, the hero falls for Aiden's sister, but will he realize his feelings before it is too late? Will mistakes from his past ruin his chance at future happiness?
These stories are full of the adventure, chivalry and romance featured in all good Highland tales. The strong, brave and intelligent women are perhaps not what historical sources would say typifies women of the day, however, they do make for excellent foils and mates for the heroes of Rose's novels. While any of the stories could be read as standalone novels, I think all are enhanced by the progression, as the depth of character builds as each make multiple appearances. At a minimum, I recommend adhering to the author's suggestion of reading Daughters of the Dagger before reading Onyx to familiarize yourself with the circumstances of his birth before diving into his story. The novella is very short, and as of this writing, it is free, and well worth the few minutes it will take to read. All of these stories have a flavor of the epic journey--there is a great task that must be completed in the face of overwhelming odds, it is transformative in nature and there is an element of the hand of fate, the divine, the paranormal, etc. intervening on the behalf of the good. Anyone who likes historical romance, adventure, or the great epics will enjoy this collection.

I do not expose what is written in the books because I don't like spoilers myself. I read this trilogy and the 1st book was ok but came across as most romantic novels....nice but nothing special. I am happy to say as I read books 2 and 3 the author improved upon these books and made them much more exciting and with much better plots. By the time I had finished reading book 3 I was hooked. I gave it 4 stars because it was a slow start and why it took me 10 days to read. Book 3 I read in one day. Worth the read for sure but understand it starts off as just an ok romance read in book one.
What a wonderful trilogy. Really enjoyed all three madman MacKeefe's stories. Loved their pets too. What an interesting read. And their ladies were a handful.
