In the summer of 2016 Warren Craghead began drawing and posting online daily grotesque portraits of Donald Trump, beginning when Trump won the Republican nomination for president. Craghead thought the project would be done that November, but when Trump won the election Craghead vowed to continue to draw Trump and his minions until “…this nightmare is over.” TRUMPTRUMP vol. 1: nomination to inauguration collects daily drawings from this ongoing series (with notes and commentary), beginning on July 21, 2016 through Inauguration Day, January 20, 2017. The drawings began as an offshoot of Craghead's LADYH8RS and USAH8RS projects, but over time have become more complicated, more narrative and more angry.
Warren Craghead III is a Ignatz-nominated artist based in Charlottesville, Virginia. Over the past 20 years his internationally-exhibited drawings and comics have appeared in numerous anthologies, websites and books. Craghead is known for his seminal poetry comics work such as HOW TO BE EVERYWHERE and thickets, and is a three-time Virginia Museum fellow. He received an MFA in 1996 from the University of Texas at Austin, a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia in 1993 and attended the Skowhegan School in 1993.
I love Warren Craghead's alternative comics and sensibility, so I was fascinated to recently discover his TrumpTrump project that has been going on daily for years now. Craghead has posted a grotesque caricature of Trump every day since he was nominated, accompanied by a verbatim quotation from 45 Himself. Every single day an outrage and every day a grotesque response. This first hardcover volume space nomination to inauguration.
Style? You see the cover, and you can get a portrait every single day, and follow him on any social media. Think Ralph Steadman's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas illustrations, Ameirica in Hell.
I was recently sent R. Sikoryak's The Unquotable Trump by its publisher, and I have to say, I didn't care for it, much as I like Sikoryak's comics. Unquotable casts Trump as the anti-hero in parodies of classic comic book covers, which is clever and I guess funny, but I really fucking despise Donald Trump and have a hard time making a big joke out of his toxic effects on society, and the very real threat his administration poses to our democracy. I vastly prefer Warren Craghead's blistering rendition of Trump, captured here in over 200 drawings: a miserably self-deluded, self-satisfied, stupid, vain, & inarticulate buffoon - and of course a pathological liar, vicious racist, vile misogynist & sexual predator on top of all that. That this man got elected to America's highest office is a true testament to the steep decline of our nation. Whether we will recover is still up to question, quite frankly.
Craghead skillfully, angrily, and perhaps at times even gleefully, makes manifest the ugliness and moral rot of Trump and his minions. By the end of the book, Craghead renders Trump almost literally as a piece of shit; his Mike Pence is also unforgettably depicted, complete with soulless black holes where his eyes should be. Craghead is a fantastic artist with a sublimely fluid, spontaneous line; something about this project really highlights his skills. My kudos (and deepest sympathies) to him for taking on this grueling project in the first place: after the election he promised to draw this daily comic until Trump finally slithers out of public office. Let's hope for all of our sakes Craghead can move on to other work, and soon. 4 out of 5.
Hilarious. Bizarre . Horrific. These 3 words describe both the art and the quotes from Craghead’s ongoing project.
I backed Retrofit’s 2018 Kickstarter so Trumptrump Volume 2 will be arriving soon. I can’t wait. This metaproject is such a welcome and needed antidote to the nightmare of this presidency.
