Old Yeller #1 & 2 included

Three Dog Tales: Old Yeller / Sounder / Savage Sam

Rate this book
Three classic dog tales brought together in a single volume—Fred Gipson’s Old Yeller, its sequel Savage Sam, and William Armstrong’s Sounder.

Old Yeller (Winner of the Newbery Honor)

When his father sets out on a cattle drive for the summer, fourteen-year-old Travis is left to take care of his mother, younger brother, and the family farm. In the wilderness of early frontier Texas, Travis faces his new and often dangerous responsibilities, with many adventures along the way, all with the help of the big yellow dog who comes to be his best friend.

Savage Sam

In this sequel to Old Yeller, Travis and his younger brother are kidnapped by an Indian raiding party, and Savage Sam, the son of the beloved yellow dog, leads a frantic chase to bring them back.

Sounder ( Winner of the John Newbery Medal)

Sounder is a loyal family dog, determined to help his owners through thick and thin. This is the story of a great coon dog and the poor sharecroppers who own him, and of the courage and love that bind a black family together in the face of extreme prejudice from the outside world.

This book was one of the saddest books I have read in my lifetime. This story made me cry if you don't cry you are not human. It was amazing just that dog. Read to find out. It taught us about the bond between the dog and the boy.

Old Yeller is a story about a boy who finds a yellow lab and
the dog saves the boy's life, many times. It made me cry a few times.

Picked this up because I was challenged to re- read a book I hated as a child/ young adult. Old Yeller gave me such nightmares about rabies as a kid, but i noticed it won a Newbury Award, so I wanted to give it a try a an adult. Both Old Yeller and Sounder (first two stories in this collection) were very good, very sad, but true testaments to the strength of the human- animal bond. But the third story, a sequel to Old Yeller called Savage Sam, was.... not good. The harsh anti-Indigenous perspective may have worked at the time it was written but made it very hard to read in present day.

Read Old Yeller and Savage Sam from this collection. I loved the Old Yeller movie as a boy, and loved reading it even more. I was surprised by how great Savage Sam was, though I remember little of its actual story. Hard to know if these are actually good books or just colored in the warm glow of youth. Would be interesting to find out.

Medium recommendation to any interested.

Old yeller and Savage Sam, GREAT FREAKING BOOKS! Sounder, holy smokes it is depressing. But a "good " book. I love it when Arliss has to eat his own Mule, I also love it when He "swallers" the injuns ear. I read these when I was in my mountain man live off the land phase and loved them, I bought this book with all three a couple off years back and re-read them. Fun fun and more fun. Until you get to Sounder, then its sad sad and more sad.

I didn't actually read them in an omnibus, but Fred Gibson's Old Yeller and Savage Sam are splendid books about dogs, pioneers, and life. Once could read a lot of history books without learning as much about the pioneer age as from these books.
And Sounder ... it's heartbreaking and unforgettable.
