This story was really short but I really enjoyed it! It was a little creepy but I found the story to be very interesting and entertaining. There were some grammar errors that I ran across and there was insta love as well which is why I did knock off a star and a half from the rating. Regardless, it’s a nice little short story!

"When They Call" by L.E. Perez was a great quick read. Sam was in an accident and started hearing voices and cries. So she takes off to go to Cassadaga, Florida, to get help from a well-known person. While there, she meets Gabe, and he is familiar with the things going on in the area. This was my first time reading anything by this author, and I really enjoyed it. If other books are written like this short story, I will definitely be reading more. I liked the hotel scene where Gabe held Sam's hand.

I really enjoyed this story! Sam has survived a horrible motorcycle accident but is left with severe headaches and nightmares. It takes several months and many surgeries to put her back together – but nothing has helped the terrible headaches. Sam has lost her dream job of being a police officer because of the accident. This leaves her with trying to find answers to the nightmares and crying children she hears. Her investigating leads her to Cassadaga – the Spiritualist Capital of the World to find answers. Would love to read more about the goings on in Cassadaga!

If you want a quick, fun read just in time for Halloween that's just a little different - less of the usual crisp autumn in New England and more steamy summer in Florida - then look no further, because you've arrived. Nobody writes spooky Florida stories better than a Native Floridian, and there's nothing more fun than a spooky Florida story set in Cassadaga. (If you live in Central Florida, you've heard of the town, believe me.)

This story has just enough meat on its bones to satisfy my need for a paranormal snack, but it also left me with a craving for more. I had the feeling that this could be the start of something even deeper and more interesting; that the author was writing it all down in a terrible rush of creativity, overcome with the need to capture it on paper before the idea escaped. Sometimes imagery and dialog flowed so swiftly between points of view that I had to back track to see who was speaking or thinking. Rather than distract, it reinforced for me this feeling of explosive, spontaneous creativity. It actually lent an extra level of excitement to the story for me, because I felt as if I were reading an early, yet polished edit of a story destined to become the beginning of a series I knew well.

I want to know what Sam will do after this. What is her gift, and what can she do? I totally love Gabe, and I’m dying to know all about him! We get such a short glimpse into his life, but it’s really well done. And what about his friend? There’s so much that could happen in Gabe’s hotel.

If you’re wondering, this is a fun, suspenseful paranormal story with a hint of romance, but no sex. There's some violence, but nothing over the top in the traditional “horror” sense. I found the spookiness to be more mental, which to me, is the best kind. If you’re a quick reader, you can enjoy this in an afternoon.

When They Call is a quirky little book. At only 50 something pages it’s a very quick read, perfect for waiting at an airport, doctor’s office or other appointment where you are stuck waiting with nothing else to do. It’s more of a 4.5 for me than my original 4 I considered.

The story takes place in Cassadaga, which is about 10 minutes from where I live. I’ve been to the hotel Samantha is staying at, as well as eaten at the restaurant inside the hotel (overpriced, average quality food that was nothing special, and poor service, I give the restaurant 2 stars only bc the building is cool). That hotel is supposedly quite haunted, though I’ve not stayed there, so it makes a great location for this spooky little story.

My only complaint is that I would have liked for it to have been longer, but that’s just me.

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a short paranormal mystery with a cool twist.

Samantha is a police officer, who while riding her motorcycle, crashes into a wall one day because she hears children’s voices in her head. She ends up dying at the scene, and when the ambulance came, they brought her back to life, but she had been dead for a total of 3 minutes.
She has to relearn to walk now and suffers from migraines from the accident. It doesn’t help that the voices in her head are screaming at her all the time. She heads to Cassadega, FL to see if she can’t get relief from the voices.
This is a very good book. I really enjoyed the writing, the characters, and the story. I’m not going to give any spoilers, just grab the book and sit back and enjoy!!
