Brief aan de paus
Mark Vangheluwe besloot na jarenlang misbruik door zijn ‘nonkel bisschop’ het gevecht aan te gaan en het zwijgen te doorbreken. In 2010 ontketende hij met de bekendmaking van een van de grootste schandalen binnen de rooms-katholieke kerk een mediastorm die wereldwijd de pers haalde. Ondertussen leidt hij met zijn gezin een rustig bestaan in een uithoek van Vlaanderen, maar schaamte en angst blijven hem parten spelen. Tot het moment dat hij tot het inzicht komt dat hij over zijn eigen leven kan beslissen en daarvoor de vorm en de woorden vindt: een brief aan de paus. Ik moet je iets vertellen, maar onmacht en vooral schaamte houden me tegen. Ook twijfel en angst spelen me parten. Het is alsof ik nu pas bezit krijg over een stuk van mijn herinneringen en dit met jou wil delen. Vreemd na zoveel jaren.

Zonder poeha of zucht naar sensatie, cru en eenvoudig vertellen over een afschuwelijke en permanente aanslag op het leven van een mens, een gezin en een familie. Schreeuw naar ontschuldigen en ontschamen is een eeuwige en verterende zoektocht met levensnoodzakelijke steun van een zorgzaam en warm nest. Zo herkenbaar en toch ook zo onbekend.

So Pope Francis, the head honcho, the big enchilada, the grand poobah, the ringleader, the rabble-rouser, the godfather, le chef, el gran Bandido, the man with the golden gun: only laicized Roger Vangheluwe on 20 March 2024 last month, following the hearing testimony from Mark Vangheluwe: a testimony that uncovered years of sexual abuse (from age 5 until 18) at the hands of his ‘Uncle Bishop.’ So finally the Pope decided to stop paying his pension, to stop throwing poor Roger a bone. Well, the Church has to eventually run out of money, somehow.
You can read about bishop after bishop, priest after priest, nun after nun, cover up story after cover up story; it is amazing that the bandits lair that is the Church - power and money oh so sweet - has not been cancelled yet. Oh but when I was young I was an arrogant atheist - you don’t respect other people Louis, little Louis doesn’t understand. Those prostitutes of god, just a few bad apples they said: yet thousands of kids have been molested - and we did not even start to look at the other religions: in Mallorca a Hindu priest was arrested with some vedas, a knife, and a stiff cock in his pocket - the girl, innocent, 12 years old - spoiled for life. Of course it has nothing to do with faith: just your average archaic power institutions riddled with ignorance kept alive by a superficial respect for smelly old people and a history better left for the dead.
No tell policies and a sheer lack of decency protect rapists with increased blood flows to enter little boys in houses of god all over the world, yet Marx is the devil and drugs are poison - so there are no clergy behind bars.
In Islam, there are cases of sexual assault reported and protected by Muslim leaders during Hajj, that yearly pilgrimage to Mecca, but what do I know, I am Belgian racist too spoiled for his own good - I better watch myself.
