This volume was BAD ASS! I can't even begin to tell you guys how amazing it was to finally get the opportunity to see how everything played out from the battle in the last volume. As always Soma kicks ass and I'm so glad that our original characters are beginning to stand up to this new regime at the institute. They're awful and crude and rude to the students who are simply passionate about cooking. I know that the original gang will triumph over this nonsense!

La trama si infittisce e fa davvero venire voglia di continuare, anche se un po' mi mancano le sfide di cucina e soprattutto i piatti e la loro descrizione. Spero tornino nei prossimi volumi!

More drama and stakes as the Central story continues.
World: Solid art, nothing really to really write about. The world building is solid building on the central storyline and adding new pieces and status quo changes. We are seeing the ramifications and the far sweeping effect Central has on all the characters, not just the main ones. New characters pieces introduced are one note for now to serve the story purpose.
Story: The end of dorm story was good and expected but still fun. Building the characters this time around is Iishiki and also the visit by Voldemorte was good. Then there is the new challenges and we have some cool set up. Emotional yes but a lot of set up.
Characters: Those new Central characters are archetypes of manga and they fit the bill. Not a lot of depth their except what they look like. The Erina stuff is good and the Soma end was also solid.
Solid build up.
Onward to the next book!

The plot is kinda turning into a shounen cliche and all with arrival of new villains on meaner than the other. Yet I like how it's turning out to be. A war between the commoners and elites. The ones who abuse their power for securing their position and the ones who fight for their right to independence.

Quick thoughts: Now that the new status quo and nature of the series' villains have been established this volume starts to shows flashes of its old self within the new framework (despite a couple of ham handed plot points). Add in a couple of big developments and some nicely character based drawing of future battlelines and I quite enjoyed this one.

I will be biased and say that I have never been a fan of stories with "bad" individuals or worse, groups. I was saddened that there existed a "villain" figure for this story on this volume. Story went well even before this "Central" group thing was set-up for the manga. Bleh!

I was looking forward to meeting the rest of the Council of Ten but not like this! D: But actually this new twist is awesome, and the stakes are even higher. I want to know what happened with Soma's dad and Erina's dad!

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Sōma!, Vol. 18 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (146–154) of the on-going manga series.
Despite the shokugeki being rigged for Sōma Yukihira to lose, he banks on the judges' curiosity and presents jidori chicken-wing pot stickers and persuades the judges to try them. The judges award Sōma the match, thus canceling the eviction of the Polaris Dormitory. As Polaris celebrates, Satoshi Isshiki informs them that the societies can now challenge Central Gourmet Institute to be reinstated with fair judging.
Azami Nakiri visits the dorm, but instead of taking Erina Nakiri back, he notes that he still has greater plans to rule. Erina is shocked to learn that Jōichirō Saiba, the person she admired, is Sōma's father. After dismissing three Council members, Central dispatches its Council members as well as its new recruits to battle in the society challenges, easily winning matches and disbanding clubs while the Polaris students and allies scout them out.
The next shokugeki challenge is between the Cutting Edge Research Society member Ryō Kurokiba and Central's recruit member, Rentarō Kusunoki.
This tankōbon is written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. It continues the takeover of Tōtsuki Saryo Culinary Institute by former student and dropout of Azami Nakiri. Despite the rigged shokugeki, Sōma Yukihira manages to win and save Polaris Dormitory from closing and to make future shokueki fair. However, despite that many societies from Tōtsuki Saryo Culinary Institute loses much of their shokueki to Central Gourmet Institution.
All in all, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Sōma, Vol. 18 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

I don't feel the need to any kind of in-depth review for this - we're at volume 18, so if you'r reading, you're likely a fan and don't need me to sell you on this. However, I do have some quick some thoughts:
- Yukihira is basically Goku (of Dragonball fame). He's a cheerfully dorky guy who's amazing at what he does and has a knack for befriending his enemies. I don't mind this characterization, but it does feel kind of shallow sometimes.
- I liked that Erina finally found out that her cooking idol is
- Erina's "culture shock" at not being rich are amusing (ie. her trying to use a washing machine)
- I'm looking forward to how future volumes with develop now that there's a more clear villain and plotline.

This volume was everything I wanted after the way the last left off. I just love the way they break down the cooking! It makes me feel like, even I could make these things. It'll be interesting to see how the history between Azumi & Sabia plays out.

August 10, 2021Uh. I know a quick way to resolve this. Everybody just resign from the school. The cream of the crop is supposed to be attending (despite the fact that the majority don’t seem that great) and without student or teachers, the school will struggle. I understand they have power and prestige, but that only lasts so long as people give it to them. After insulting some major industry players, the dean should have alienated quite a few people. The ex-dean should just recruit them all into a new school and say screw ‘em. For that matter, gather all the alums together - that’s all the industry influence you need. I hope the council members that went along with this all get kicked out after it’s over.
I’m also tired of every new character being the new best awesome chef 🤦🏻♀️
I hope this arc gets resolved soon, because the new administration is so painfully stupid that I’m having trouble reading it. I’m guessing all this has something to do with why Soma’s dad never graduated? He needs to come visit and kick his kouhai’s butt. Also...being dean of the school doesn’t make Azami head of the Nakiri family, soooo....

La primera parte del volumen nos muestra la estrategia usual de los autores de revelarnos el resultado del duelo de un volumen anterior. Los primeros tres capítulos de este tomo nos muestran ese duelo de Soma con Eizan. Efectivamente, cuatro tomos se me hizo excesivo para mostrar el final, ya esperado inclusive, de ese duelo.
Por eso las tres estrellas.
El resto del volumen comienza a acomodar las piezas para el siguiente arco. Hay movimientos dentro de Totsuki para facilitar el plan del director. Los autores nos dan pistas, nuevamente, sobre el pasado del papá de Nakiri y el de Soma. No es la primera vez que nos dan pistas, y todavía no nos dan ninguna respuesta. Estoy seguro que hay una historia muy interesante sobre por qué el papá abandonó Totsuki siendo uno de los mejores cocineros de la academia.
Parece ser que el siguiente volumen tendrá nuevos shokugekis interesantes y espero que más personajes, a parte de Soma, se enfrenten a los nuevos miembros de Central.

The Azami Nakiri - Central saga continues, with Soma demonstrating that the Tootsuki Institute can push against their plans for... Just wait for the next volume ;) Once again the author manages to manipulate stakes expertly and make every confrontation, regardless of character, seem life-or-death. I find it a weakness, though, that in this stretch of chapters the book provides little plot advancement other than "the heroes can fight back." But as the series earned my attention years ago, I can live with that.

Soma is just soooo good that even people bribed not to eat his food will still eat his food. What an "epic winrar!!1!" Oh and now we're doing ALL SHOKUGEKIS, ALL THE TIME! But not actual competition, or food, or any of that. Lots of text dumps of 'rules' that have been unimportant for 99% of the series so far anyways, lots of jerk characters introduced specifically to be jerk characters and have 0 redeeming qualities. Lots of "muahahahaha I am so evil just look at my plan" because senpai became a wife guy instead of a kohai guy. Boring.

The challenge between Soma, our hero, and a member of the Council of Ten comes to a close.
This was not one of my favorite of the series so far. I liked the shokugeki here, but it didn't have me on edge. And the ending of the book seems to point to a series of shokugeki between Members of Bowl Societies and Central. When a similar plot device (the Fall Classic) occurred, the several volume carry through of this dragged a bit for me. Hopefully that doesn't repeat itself in the upcoming volume.

Desde el volumen 1 hasta el volumen 30, este manga es increíble. No puedo creer la velocidad a la que lo devoré, definitivamente fue un gusto enorme encontrarme con esta historia.
Todos los volúmenes tienen un inicio y un final que te deja con muchas ganas de seguir leyendo y sobre todo, la comida, la historia, los diálogos, todo tiene un sentido y espero que todas esos platillos sean posibles en la vida real.

The power of food to entice the senses is shown at its peak in this story, as even crooked judges have to rethink their rigged ratings.
Revelations about who has met who in the past, though, were fascinating. Also, the "evil chefs" clique is following an interesting path, but at last we have some clue as to what started their leader on this weird revenge scheme, only...does he, himself, really know as much as he thinks he does? Hmmm.

I’m sad to say that this has taken me over a year to finally finish it. 😂 What I’ve realized is that I will binge read a lot of manga and get myself into a nasty reading slump. It’s just GOD AWFUL. I’m very happy that I’ve decided to reopen this book and finally finish it. I can’t wait to continue on with the series!

This was my favorite volume in awhile! The conclusion of Yukihira's shokogeki against Eizen and the results, the look on Erina's evil dad's face when he finds out his BFF from his days in Polaris dorm was Yukihira's dad, Takumi's back...I've missed this series, haha!

It's totally genius how competitors from previous books are now characters you root for and like. And another exciting ending that leave you craving the next book. This series started out a bit blah for me but it's turned into a serious favorite right now. It's really matured over the years.
