Cheer

It's not like I woke up one morning and thought "I want to be a cheerleader!" Heck, it's not like I woke up and thought "I want to be into girls!" either, but the universe didn't ask me about that one.

It all started with a pair of pretty blue eyes. Isn't that how it always starts?

The problem? Those pretty blue eyes are attached to Candice. We're talking Candice who's been my best friend forever. My partner in crime since before we could talk.

Yeah, talk about taking "it's complicated" to a whole new plane of existence.

So now I'm a cheerleader. And I totally have a crush on my best friend who may or may not be into me. Oh, and as if that wasn't enough I'm also dodging crazy Danielle who thinks I want to steal her man (not likely given recent developments in my sexuality) and crazy Chris who thinks he has a shot with me or Candice.

Also not likely. See above about recent confusing developments in my sexuality.

Yeah, high school was complicated enough before the whole cheerleader thing. And the whole Candice thing. And everything else. Now I don't know if I'm going to survive my senior year!

Princess Charming
The world thought being a princess was so cool, but Amelia knew the truth: it sucked.

One kiss with another girl. One photograph that went viral. One international firestorm of gossip and Amelia finds herself banished halfway around the world to America to cool her heels and wait for the gossip to die down.

A trip to Royal Realms was supposed to be the best part of Dani's school band career, but she was miserable.

So she realized she was into girls. So she broke up with her longtime boyfriend. He didn't have to hold a grudge and do everything he could to ruin her trip. Dani was on her perfect vacation and all she wanted to do was escape.

Two girls desperate to break free. Two girls who are about to be thrown together by a chance meeting. Royal Realms is supposed to be the place where dreams come true, and sparks will fly as princess meets band geek in an unexpected romance hot enough to cause an international incident!

Well this is a fun and easy read to me and I quite enjoyed it, where everyone seem to accepting gay/lesbian people. No coming out drama. The main characters were cute, adorable and sweet together. I dont know if this is just me, but the narration was quite long sometimes that it kind of made me bored and skim through it a bit. Beside that, I enjoyed the book. I would say it is a lighthearted read where you read it to kill times, i guess. 😐

Sweet, funny, and cute

"Cheer" is one of my favorites by an author I love. I usually prefer Mia Archer's more "geeky" heroines, but Alex manages to be just the right mix of fun, sarcastic, and athletic, with a bit of geek in there lurking in the background. (She keeps making those internal comments that say, "This girl has a firm grasp on geek culture.") Her coming of age story, while she tries to figure out what is going on in the unfathomable mind of her childhood best friend, all while breaking barriers in the cheerleading squad, is a great read. Highly recommended!

I received an ARC of "Cheer" in exchange for a fair, unbiased review.

Nice

I loved the story. Been awhile since I read a book that had me giggling. It is also nice to be able to read a book where being gay is accepted and not the main obstacle in the story. I think I will be checking out this author's other works. 😘

Mia Archer's books are sort of hit and miss for me. I think this one is a hit. It's one of her new books so I hope future ones will be good too. It's a very YA book, there isn't any sex or any adult situations, and it's pretty low drama.

This book is about two best friends - Alex and Candis. Candis is a cheerleader and convinces Alex to join the cheer squad. Alex recognizes she has romantic feelings for Candis and girls in general and the book is basically about Alex accepting she is gay and about the two girls relationship. The story is told by Alex and the one viewpoint is easier to read then two.

I thought this book was much better written then previous books by this author. The characters are much more likable then other books and that's what makes this book much better. I also thought this book had a good pace. The story has a happy ending with good future epilogue that makes it rewarding.

I liked that when Alex figures out she is gay and it becomes apparent to her friends no one really cares - so coming out is basically all about her and not about the fear of what other people will think. The parents don't really come into play either.

Most of Mia Archers books sort of make one or both girls sound like guys. This books is not as bad as the others but Alex is still a little guyish sounding. I don't know any girls, gay or straight, that sound like dumb teenage boys but that's sort of how I sometimes imagine the girls in her books.

There are two stories in this novel. The first, Cheer, is bout Alex Harris who has friend, Candice Williams. Alex decides to go out for cheerleading and realizes that she is actually into girls. Chris is a bully who was Alex's boyfriend until she realized she was a lesbian and it's something that he just can't deal with. It's a very nice romance between Alex and Candice.

The second story is a cute one entitled Princess Charming. Amelia is a princess from a small European nation that has come to America to help promote a company from her homeland. Dani has graduated from high school but will still be in the band that summer and the band happens to be playing at the same place Amelia is going to.

Amelia's father is very strict and a guy named Felix is watching over her but a woman, Renata, is also there although Amelia isn't sure just what Renata's job is.

Again, there's a really nice lesbian romance between the two girls although the result is an international incident at the park.

Both these stories are really good, very nice romance with some kissing but that's it.

Cheer brings together Alex and Candice for more than cheerleading.

Mia Archer wrote a fun teenage romance and coming out story. It is light and fanciful in style. The first person narration comes from Alex. It starts to dawn on her that the feelings she has for her best friend and teammate named Candice are life changing. Candice blows hot and cold toward Alex as the story progresses. This leaves Alex with a serious case of confusion. Another teammate and the boy next door makes life even more difficult for these complicated young women.

Cheer is coupled with a second book called Princess Charming in this edition. I didn't read it for a second time. I remember that I enjoyed it when I read it.

The story is a mess, there's weak plots, things are all over the place, the author can't seem to agree what's the state of technology and the year this takes place (which ends up being important since the main problem to overcome involves a cellphone).
A lot of oversights on story details: eyes changing color; the author apparently forgetting a character is in a scene that discuss and decides his fate (to name a few), and it seems no research about cheerleading was done while writing this.
Time skips and narrative glances over actual important facts happening in exchange for paragraphs and more paragraphs of the main character's inner monologue trying to be the wittiest girl in town.
Dialogue, especially over text messages are very cringy.

tl;dr: I'll never get those 5 hour back.

This was really fun! Lighthearted and sweet without being too sappy, and a bit of a mystery going on in the background, too! Sure, Alex was a bit slow on the uptake, but she was a sweetheart.

Cheer-leading isn't really a thing where I am, but this kind of makes me wish it were. I'll have to read more of Mia's books :)

First book I have read by Mia Archer but if this is typical I figure I will try some more
Book kept me smiling from cover to cover and even laughing in places.
Recommended for anyone who wants a break from all the heavy going stuff. Enjoy!

A little angsty for my mood.

Sweet but a little rambling.

I would have loved more positive interactions between the main LIs rather than the push and then pull that happened throughout the novel.

A little predictable

Story followed a predictable arc that was nonetheless interesting and enjoyable to read. If only it was that easy in real life!

Cheer follows a girl, Alex, as she realises that she might not be straight. She decides to join her best friend in becoming a cheerleader and falls for her but all the while another girl in her grade has it out for her as she seems to think that Alex is after her boyfriend. TW: slut shaming, casual homophobia, casual ableism.

I got this on a whim from a bookbub email so I honestly hadnt planned to read it any time soon. But then I got into a romance kick and I wanted to read a wlw relationship so this one was the one I spotted in my kindle library so went with it not expecting much.

I was pleasantly surprised though.

A light hearted read...3.5*

This was cute story about told by Alex Harris, who is a swimmer turned cheerleader that realizes not only is she attracted tye fairer sex but her best friend nonetheless. Its a typical story, not much angst, not much drama, but very cute and a very easy read.
Don't be fooled by the length of the book though because it's really only about 150 pages, the last half is one of Archer's other books. That's a bit annoying but regardless, the book was a good read especially being free on kindleUnlimited.
