Tattered Souls
Samuel Walker loved being a Seneschal with the Ordo Felix Culpa, keeping the world safe from things that go bump in the night — especially when he got to bump them back. That was before he was given the choice of exile into a normal life or a bullet to the head. Now in the corporate world, he fights red tape instead of demonic, alien creatures from other dimensions. So when Kate arrives, chased by monsters and carrying a message from her murdered brother, Samuel has no choice but to venture back into OFC’s line of fire. Maybe this time, with the Archangel Michael on his side, he can go back to the life he prefers/was trained for. It’s going to be a struggle to keep Kate alive and evade punishment for the trail of blood he left behind, but if he can pull it off, Samuel might find that the world is a better place than he thought and absolutely worth dying for.

Interest in writing began early by writing stories for his classmates in Kindergarten, winning a young-authors award in the Sixth Grade, and spending much of his high school classes writing instead of learning.
Richard spends his days as a server administrator and website programmer, working on writing and prolific reading in the evening.

Tattered Souls, first book in the Broken Souls series by Richard Hein, surprised me all the way through. This guy is funny. Hein has a sharp wit and a way with words that had me laughing out loud often. His characters were interesting and real and I enjoyed getting to know them. This paranormal story introduces us to a terrifying new world where entities from an infinite number of universes come to wreak havoc on ours. We get a look at some pretty nasty monsters through the eyes of a man who lives on booze and guilt and is about as self-deprecating as can be. And he's hilarious. There is very little romance, but that's probably because this isn't a romance novel. An oversight on my part, since I'd anticipated reading only romance for the Book Battles. Woah. This book is hefty. I’m not going to lie. It’s full of action, adventure, pockets of humor and very dark things. Tattered Souls is the first book in the Broken Souls series. It took me a while to get through this and I’m usually a fast reader. With that said, I very much enjoyed this book. I liked having a ‘hero’ that is hard to like. One moment I really felt for him and the next I was like seriously dude? By the end though I think Samuel really tries his best and despite that is actually a good person.
There is a lot of storytelling going on and I liked this new world. A great concept that all these other entities on Earth that we humans believe in are really bad and generally out to get us. Samuel and his rag tag team are really put through the ringer while investigating Kate’s brother’s death.
If you enjoy reading science fiction/fantasy books with a bit of humor, then I’d recommend this book. Very well written with interesting characters with unique personalities. Heck, even the demons are quite sarcastic.
Final Rating: 5 Stars

Fun and fast paced!
I was a little apprehensive when I bought this. The last few books that I bought during a free or reduced promotion were literary disappointments. This one turned out to be very enjoyable! The author tells a well paced story with great characters and creative prose. There were some typos missed in editing throughout the story but, not so much, or so bad, that they pulled me too far out of the immersion. Well done Mr. Hein. I'll be buying the rest of the series!

Polished writing, great characters, and a compelling storyline from start to finish.
Samuel Walker is irreverent. Kate is a firecracker. Daniel has probably never broken a rule in his life. This unlikely trio is sure to keep you laughing, grimacing, and facepalming in equal amounts, and you'll be hard-pressed to put this book down before you've finished it.
