Chains & Canes

Rate this book
Wealthy businessman Daniel Baker doesn’t have a creative bone in his body, but he knows art and craves beauty. Contemporary dancer Naya Ortiz, his fiancée of three years, embodies both. His protective commitment to her happiness extends to hiring Dominas to satisfy the sexual masochism she craves.

The balance of their relationship is tipped when Naya dances with reckless Cajun choreographer Remy Lomand. His magnetism as a Dom carries over to a backstage encounter that leaves Naya breathless—and Daniel unable to look away.

Remy knows the deal. The fancy people want to play with a disposable boy toy. He’s fine with that…but not with letting Daniel remain a bystander. As their sessions intensify, Remy guides Daniel’s awakening as a sexual submissive. Their no-strings threesome reveals the physical connection Daniel and Naya have lacked—and the emotional depth Remy fears.

When Remy and Naya tirelessly work to found a professional dance company, Daniel is left on the outside looking in. And although he and Naya are ready to submit to Remy for the rest of their lives, the man they call Sir may not want their love at all.

4,5 stars!
Katie Porter does it every single time. No matter what series, this author gives me pause with some of the tropes and makes me go beyond my boundaries and comfort zones and I LOVE it. Chains and Canes was a tough read for me as someone who is more into the "BDSM light" erotic romances. Prefereably nothing too dark or harsh and this book blew that to smithereens! The romance and the sex were both so dark, so intense there were times I was literally breathless. The romance, the characters, the dirty, dirty sex scenes were amazing and I can't wait to read the next Katie Porter book, in this series or in their new series I read about!

Fave Quote:
This wasn’t about submission. It was about three people picking up sharp, broken pieces and trying to fit them back together without inflicting new wounds.

5 STARS

Chains and Canes by Katie Porter is another fantastic offering from that amazing writing team. Adding a third person into an existing relationship is not an easy thing to do, and it is not without its road bumps, but the way that these three end up giving each other exactly what they need is downright beautiful!!

Daniel Baker is business man that knows what he wants out of life for him and the people in his world. If he can’t provide it, he is willing to do what it takes to make sure they get them. His beautiful talented fiancé, Naya Ortiz, is a dancer that can be a star, but he has to get past her self-doubts to make her see that. He has finally gotten her to agree to try out for more than just chorus work. His love for her knows no bounds. He has even in the past hired Dominas to satisfy her masochistic cravings. Her newest craving may just bring both of them to their knees though.

Naya’s new dance partner/choreographer, Remy Lomand, stirs something submissive in not only her, but in a part of Daniel he hasn’t explored yet. This Cajun demands recognizes it in him when they invite him into their bedroom to give Naya the pain she craves, but can this double submission last? Will adding this man to their world rip it apart, or will it bring them happiness that they never saw coming?

I absolutely loved going on this journey with these three!! Their trip to HEA is an emotional roller coaster ride that drags you along! I just couldn’t put this book down. It sucked me in from the beginning to the end. I love these types of journeys where each character is learning something new about themselves, and grow together through that journey. I truly hope that y’all enjoy this one as much as I have!

Daniel Baker is a business man with a beautiful and talented dancer fiance, Naya Ortiz. Daniel knows what he wants out of life. He has everything in place, if he doesn't have it, he has ways to get it. Naya has doubts herself and she has the talent to be a star. Daniel wants her to succeed, so he has talked her into trying out for something greater... He even makes sure her needs are satisfied by hiring someone to satisfy her masochism cravings. Daniel's love for Naya is just, wow. AMAZING!

Enter Remy Lomand. He is Naya's new dance partner/choreographer. And OH EM GEE!! This man stirs up all kinds of feelings in Naya and himself. And he sees the submissive side of Daniel.... Daniel and Naya invite Remy into their bedroom... Their threesome reveals a lot that no one had planned on...

Will this encounter break this beautiful couple and destroy a very sexy and in control choreographer/dancer? You must read to find out.

I give Chains and Cane's 5 out of 5 stars. This is far from your normal wham bam thank you mam, I'm slapping your ass erotica. This is an emotional ride.

How I got this book: ARC from the author

Warning: A sexy-as-hell Cajun choreographer plays slap, tickle, chains and canes with a muy caliente Puerto Rican dancer and her repressed businessman fiancé. What could possibly go wrong?
This blurb came from the author’s website.

Oh, the blurb for this particular installment in Club Devant had me worried. I discovered when reading the first book, Lead and Follow, that I really want all members of a ménage to be happy and fully included. My romance heart feels cheated if they aren’t. The fact that this blurb cast doubt on that happened, even though I know it is a romance, kept me on my toes the entire time I read just hoping that things would work out for all three. As I think about that last sentence, I have decided that Porter is extremely devious because I think I fell into their plan without even attempting to escape…

Porter created three very magnetic and different characters in Chains and Canes. Daniel could make money hand over fist, dominate any boardroom, and loved his fiancée so much he did anything he could to keep her satisfied on all levels. He told himself that as long as she was happy, he was happy and he was mostly correct. Daniel also seemed to be the more mentally strong one in that he believed in Naya and her abilities but he also knew her well enough only to encourage and work to ensure that when she was ready opportunities would exist. Naya was a brilliant dancer filled with internal doubts about her ability to move out of the chorus line and to ever have an emotional relationship with a Dom. Naya also needed the cathartic emotional release she received from physical pain to achieve some sort of emotional balance. Yet, she loved Daniel who could not directly give her that release but had to go through a third-party. Then there was Remy, a great choreographer, born on the wrong side of the tracks with the physical and emotional scars to prove it. He believed that anything good was temporary and that he didn’t deserve true happiness in a relationship.

I absolutely loved watching the three of them work together. I thought that Porter did a great job of showing the tension that can exist when relationship dynamics change and those changes spur other changes in the individuals involved. It isn’t all flowers and rainbows but takes work and open communication even when some aspects of the relationship have been established for years. I liked that mistakes were made even if I didn’t want the associated emotional pain for the characters because the reaction once the mistake was discovered was extremely telling. I also enjoyed the different levels of submission. To me that said more about the personalities involved than the words “two submissives” and added a great deal of depth. I also felt it was important to the overall dynamic and in maintaining character consistency that even when involved Daniel seemed to be Naya’s back-up safe word and would break his submission to intervene if necessary. One additional aspect that I thought was crucial was the distinction between their work balance of power and their personal balance of power. That separation allowed me to buy into the overall story and not focus on just one aspect.

Having said all of that I do have a minor issue with this story. Early on there is a scene revolving around the fact that Devant is losing a lot of money and the reason(s) aren’t evident. This was brought up once or twice more throughout the book but no movement was made on addressing the issue. I am guessing that this is a thread, which will grow to become front and center in a later installment but because of its physical placement in, Chains and Canes, I was expecting more development. However, it is a minor quibble.

Overall I enjoyed reading Chains and Canes. Porter provided lots of tension, smoking smexy scenes, power struggles, give and take, and the fulfillment of some dreams. I am looking forward to continuing this series because a certain character from the first book still needs his HEA, a certain individual who likes to watch needs some action, and there is a mysterious continual loss of money that needs solving.

I give Chains and Canes a B/B+

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales.

Quick & Dirty: Steaming *HOT* ménage romance! Dark, intense and creatively written.

Opening Sentence: “She’s a star, you know.”

The Review:

*Warning: This is a series for mature readers who can handle tough language and sexual situations, i.e. ménage, BDSM, and male/male.* Naya is a dancer who likes her sex a little bit rough. Unfortunately for her, her partner Daniel just can’t bring himself to give Naya the kind of pain that she needs. They have hired a lot of female Doms in the past to give her the release she needs. A new job leads Naya and Daniel in a different direction with a different partner.

Club Devant is looking for a new dancer. Daniel knows that his fiance, Naya, is good enough to work for Declan Shaw’s club. Daniel works for Declan as his money man and he knows the club is headed for trouble if Declan doesn’t turn the situation around. He hopes that his sexy fiance can help with that.

Naya knows from the moment that she dances with Remy that he can give her something she needs sexually, dominance. She wants him in the bedroom but Naya has always been dominated by females and she doesn’t want to upset Daniel with her revelation. Lucky for her, Daniel saw the way Remy and Naya danced together and invites Remy over for a session.

Daniel and Naya discover more about themselves with Remy than they ever thought possible. As a result they want to include Remy in their everyday relationship, but as always jealousy rears it’s ugly little head and Remy believes it’s too good to be true while Daniel and Naya prove their love for each other and Remy.

Daniel and Naya are very open about their relationship to each other. They communicate their thoughts and feelings and because of that they have a great relationship. Naya and Daniel are tough when they want to be but when Remy flips that switch they are submissive in their own ways. Naya likes the high and often gets lost in her pleasure but Daniel still keeps an eye on her to make sure she is okay and often pisses off Remy in the process.

I really did enjoy Daniel and Naya and their relationship. They were never hateful to each other. It was easy to understand Daniel not wanting to cause Naya pain. There were a few moments when it felt like the relationship could have turned bad but with their easy communication, they were able to get through it.

Chains and Canes is a hot and steamy book. There is also a lot of emotional baggage to handle. Chains and Canes really was a wonderful novel in terms of the relationship and that Naya was a wonderfully strong female character. I fell in love with all these characters and really wished them the best. If you want to try something a little different I would recommend this erotic novel. It is the second novel in the Club Devant series but this novel really just focuses on the couple so the first novel Lead and Follow doesn’t necessarily need to be read in order to understand Chains and Canes. Although it may help to understand aspects of the Club more clearly.

Notable Scene:

Only satin graced her skin now. She knelt and rummaged among Remy’s things until she found the stiff black belt he’d wear with his suit costume. She felt powerful, although she was handing everything to him–handing him his own belt.

That magic switch clicked over in her mind. Remy eyed the belt witha combination of hunger and suspicion. Always his suspicion, as if she’d yank it back and tease him for wanting too much. The magic switch was her submission. No more bossing around her Sir, the one she was beginning to care for more than was safe or wise. But it was happening anyway. She wanted him happy.

Remove feelings from this exploration? She’d be deluded to believe that lie any longer.

“Please, Sir. I need to be beaten and fucked, and you need to beat me and fuck me. I can’t breathe now. I know you can’t. Afterward…we’ll take a breath and do our goddamn jobs.”

“Daniel blew me,” he said hoarsely. “That doesn’t mean he’s given me permission to smack on you again. He’d flip his shit.”

“I give permission. Daniel has my best interests at heart, but he’s used to rescuing me and holding my hand through hard times.” She lifted the belt again, both hands now, an offering. “I’m capable of doing both myself. At least… That’s as much a goal for me as anything to do with my dancing. You and I need to know we can do this without Daniel playing bodyguard.”

“Why? This is a fling, Naya.”

“Don’t be dense. You’re not.” She tipped her chin toward her chest but didn’t look away from his devouring gaze. “Last time I’ll beg, Sir. Even of you. Please.”

FTC Disclaimer : This review was requested by the publicist. I have reviewed many of the authors work and consider myself a fan. The author has also participated in many events on the blog. I have not been paid for the review nor was I coerced into giving it a positive review. I actually just enjoyed it.

This is one of the most messed up ménages that I have ever read and the set up made me feel a little uneasy. Daniel and Naya are in a committed relationship. They are engaged to be married and everything seems perfect but, of course, it is not. Naya is a hardcore masochist and Daniel is no sadist. They have been paying Dominatrix to come to their home and see to her needs. It temporarily fills the void and they think that everything is hunky-dory. That is, until they meet Remy.

This is not a tale of spanking and restraints. This is a story of sexual submission, hard-core sadism and three people finding their missing parts. It isn’t for the faint of heart and pushed more than one of my limited buttons; I just love a book that challenges my black and white view of the word.

Daniel and Naya worried me. Filling the missing bits of their relationship with paid service Tops was not the way to start a marriage but it was clear that what they had was love. It was refreshing that they could speak to each other freely about their feelings and that they were willing to put that much work into their relationship. I worried that Remy would screw that up but he truly didn’t. He did threaten the fabric of their relationship though as he showed them that what they were doing was simply not enough.

Remy was so destructive that I was torn between wanting him away from Daniel and wanting him healed. He had a truly awful upbringing and that affected the way that he saw himself. He only thought he was good enough to be a part time player in their relationship, but he wanted so much more. I both love and pitied him. I loved the way he was when he was with them, the amazing Dom who could give the Naya the pain she needed whilst freeing Daniel’s submissive side. I loved that he had the ability to learn and adapt, that he so was so upset when he hurt them too much and that he tried even harder to be what they needed. I pitied the way he hated himself so much, he couldn’t even let himself stay the night after even the most emotive scene. He was the main player in this book for me and I adored him. I didn’t know if he could be a long term part of a ménage though; he judged himself too harshly and I didn’t know if he had it in him to invest that kind of emotion into other people willingly.

Daniel broke my heart all over again. He didn’t even know that he was submissive and was well and truly suppressing his bisexual side. It didn’t surprise me that the submissive in him had quelled every part of himself apart from the side that is what she needed, but in doing so he had cut off a part that was intrinsic to who he was. I loved that he wanted to worship them, that he would throw everything at making them happy because it made him happy, but in another way it made me sad as they couldn’t see his actions for what they truly were. I loved him with Remy, loved how happy he was. I knew his priority was Naya though, and I knew that that could spell the end of their little tryst.

Naya was the least vivid character in this book. She had her roll to play, and I adored how she was when she was in the scenes with the boys but, unlike them, I couldn’t see much of her character when she was alone. It was her needs that set up this unhappy little pyramid but it was also her needs that could drive them apart. She was vital but I just couldn’t see her roll in anything other than the ménage.

The sex between them was intense, emotional and so hot I had to put it down a couple of times to calm the heck down. The intense look at pain and submission should have been difficult to read but the contentment that it brought each character was hard to deny. I have to applaud the writing of the authors in this book; they made a difficult topic very easy to relate to and enjoy.

So this is a bit of a squeeing review but it deserves it; I haven’t read a book so captivating in quite a while. It challenged me in ways I can’t explain and I truly recommend it to everyone. If you like angsty, sexy BDSM ménages, pick this one up immediately.

After reading Lead and Follow, the first book in the Club Devant series written by Katie Porter, I was beyond excited to be able to read, and in advance, the second book in the series Chains and Canes! I mean it's not just that I loved so much the first book in the series because it was a well written erotica or because it was something that I had never read before but because it was one of those books that I managed to enjoy and understand even though it had a theme completely out of my comfort zone.

And much like with Lead and Follow, Chains and Canes was a hardcore erotica, with a theme outside my comfort zone that I really loved reading! Let's face it, menages are not really my cup of tea. Not that I have read many books with a menage. Katie Porter's stories are the only ones I ever read. But as a concept it's something that I can't identify myself with and usually, when I can't identify myself with the story or the characters I usually end up disliking the book. But that's not the case with these books. Far from it. I love so much reading about something that is so strange for me and getting an insight of characters that are unlike anything I have ever met in real life. I don't know if that is because of the authors' brilliance or something else entirely, what I know, is that I enjoy this series more than I ever imagined I would.

Chains and Canes is a hardcore erotica title like I said before. Readers who can't tolerate violence should think about reading this story twice, since the main heroine Naya is a masochist and into some really hard and painful stuff. Even if I was prepared for some hardcore sex scenes, there are some that made me cringe a bit. So, be warned.

The story is about Naya and Daniel, an engaged couple who have a rather unique and incredible relationship if you ask me. They know each other so well and they trust and care and love each other so deeply. One might think that they have the perfect relationship. But, as soon as they meet delicious Remy Lomand, they quickly understand that they were missing something crucial. Something that will bound them even closer and make them understand themselves deeper.
I really liked how the author handled the relationship between three people in this story. This is a very different relationship than the menage of the first book, with a completely different dynamic that the author handled in an exquisite way. I loved seeing how all three characters developed through their relationship, no matter how unconventional that was. It was fascinating seeing Daniel succumb to his submissive side, Naya liberating two perfect men and Remy coming to love himself for what he is and gaining some much needed confidence.

The sex scenes were very well written. Even if there was too much violence involved, the author could communicate her characters' emotions to the reader. You could understand how much each person cared for the other and wanted to provide the best. How everything they did was for the other's pleasure. Like I said, I may not be able to really identify with any of the three main characters but I could understand them and care for them.

All in all, Chains and Canes was everything that I was expecting it to be and then some more. I love how the writing duo of Carrie Lofty and Lorelie Brown keep experimenting with different characters and different sexual situations and how they manage to pull off each setting in a perfect way. Their writing isn't a cheap imitation of so many erotica titles out there. It truly is something unique. And even if their books are hardcore some times, still, their main focus are the emotions of their characters and not their sexual encounters. And maybe that is why I love their work so much.

A copy of this book was purchased by me for my own enjoyment. This review is also posted at SeductiveMusings.blogspot.com.

“Chains and Canes” is the latest installment in Katie Porter’s Club Devant series and its intensity and passion more than live up to the expectations set by the previous book, “Lead and Follow”. In this book, a devoted couple discovers that what they do have isn't nearly as wonderful as what they could have with a person who can provide them with that special spark that they didn't even realize they were missing.

By all appearances, Daniel and Naya appear to be a couple perfectly in sync. Naya is the gifted but insecure dancer who could take the world by storm if she would only believe more in her own talent. Daniel is the quiet but powerful businessman with his own gift for raising and investing money, and who provides the security and balance Naya needs to keep herself from sinking in self-doubt. The one thing Daniel can’t give Naya, however, is the fulfillment she gets only from submitting herself to a Dominant for the extreme pain which clears her mind and settles her soul. He knows it’s what she needs and craves, but he just can’t bring himself to inflict any pain, no matter what.

When Naya begins her new job at Club Devant, the attraction between her and Remy, the lead choreographer and dancer, is electric. Their first practice dance together is just shy of full-on sexual intercourse, with no heed to who might be watching them on stage. When Daniel sees how Remy dominates Naya so thoroughly just in that dance, he realizes that Remy could be the perfect Dom for what Naya needs....and perhaps even for what he himself has always needed, but never admitted to himself before now. Remy is understandably suspicious when Daniel invites him to spend the evening with him and Naya, and their class differences are no help in calming his concerns. Why would a rich perfect couple want a Cajun river rat like himself for more than just casual sex? And how can Daniel and Naya be the same together again if Remy refuses to stay?

All three of the main characters in “Chains and Canes” were well developed and enjoyable to read about, and it was great to see how they fit in the Club Devant world already established in the first book. We also got to see more about how the club operates and a bit more background on the owner, Declan, and his omnipresent security cameras. Club Devant is a place that I wish really existed, because I’d love to go there and see the shows I read about in the series.

But ultimately for me, the key to my enjoyment of “Chains and Canes” was Daniel. Daniel was the character with the most to lose, and the one who underwent the most changes to his life and sense of self. What made him so compelling was that in spite of all the enormous changes he experiences in this story, he never wavers from who he is and what he wants. He knows he loves Naya and wants to do everything to make her happy. But he also realizes that he feels the same way about Remy, and for the same reasons. His loyalty to them both as well as his own quiet strength of purpose is what made me care for him most of all. I was actively rooting for him to succeed in his quest to protect his loved ones while still being true to his own wants and desires. His journey as a character is truly remarkable, and reason enough to read “Chains and Canes”. I look forward to new intriguing stories and passionate characters from Katie Porter in the next Club Devant book.

What a refreshing take on the kinky millionaire.  Daniel Baker has it all and then some.  He's never been able to dominate his fiance, dancer Naya Ortiz, and for a long time they've had other women that can give her the pain she needs.  But when Naya gets a new job at Club Devant, and is confronted with Remy (remember him from the first book?) she realizes she needs more from than what her Domme's give her.  And that sexy cajun is exactly it.

Daniel soon discovers things about himself he wasn't even that aware of.  Turns out he's a sub, and bisexual.  But with Remy's history and his previous experiences being with another couple, things might get dicey.

Remy was even sexier that in the previous book!  I have a thing for that sexy cajun thing and when you combine that with his Dom side...panty melting!  I wasn't 100% a fan of Naya but for the most part I liked her.  I was actually a lot more interested in the dynamics between Daniel and Remy.  I think there's still plenty of walls those two have to break because they are the complex ones.  Job well done with them!

Chains and Canes is kinky goodness!  Another winner by the awesome writing duo that is Katie Porter!  I definitely enjoyed this story more than the first one and I'm looking forward to more from this series.  I love the setting!

What a refreshing take on the kinky millionaire. Daniel Baker has it all and then some. He’s never been able to dominate his fiance, dancer Naya Ortiz, and for a long time they’ve had other women that can give her the pain she needs. But when Naya gets a new job at Club Devant, and is confronted with Remy (remember him from the first book?) she realizes she needs more from than what her Domme’s give her. And that sexy cajun is exactly it.

Daniel soon discovers things about himself he wasn’t even that aware of. Turns out he’s a sub, and bisexual. But with Remy’s history and his previous experiences being with another couple, things might get dicey.

Remy was even sexier that in the previous book! I have a thing for that sexy cajun thing and when you combine that with his Dom side…panty melting! I wasn’t 100% a fan of Naya but for the most part I liked her. I was actually a lot more interested in the dynamics between Daniel and Remy. I think there’s still plenty of walls those two have to break because they are the complex ones. Job well done with them!

This is the 2nd book in the Club Devant series, but it can be read as a stand alone novel. There are short glimpses of the happy couple from book 1 and we also get to learn a little more about Declan, the club's owner, in this book, but there is definitely more to come there. We met Remy Lomand, briefly, in the first book and we REALLY get to know him in this one. In Chaine and Canes we meet Daniel, a businessman, and his dancer, fiancée, Naya, who is Remy's new dance partner at Devant. Daniel and Naya are in a very loving relationship, but throwing in the sexy, beautiful, quick witted Cajun and things are bound to change, but not in the way you would think. Daniel is strong and in control of his life and the world around him. After meeting Remy, it sparks something in him and he tries to bring Remy into his and Naya's world. The emotional and physical journey that these three go on together left me unable to put this book down. The story doesn't only focus on how this threesome makes their relationship work, it also delves into the world of dancing, going behind the scenes into rehearsals and what it takes to get a new dance company off the ground. The chemistry between Daniel, Naya and Remy is, seriously, off the charts and their story will make you fall in love with them. I absolutely LOVED the epilogue in this book and the last paragraph will just melt your heart.

I love the writing team called Katie Porter, I have read the Vegas Top Guns series, too, and will be watching for new releases in both series!

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

Amazing. Transcendant. Mind-blowing.

I don’t know why I haven’t read more buzz about this book, it is all these words and more. On the surface, it’s a m/f/m menage story. Look a little deeper and it is about a m/f partnership finding everything they didn’t know they were missing and giving their new Dom his piece and peace. The main characters are all so vivid. Two of them are dancers, the third is the businessman who loves art. I’m not a fan of dance - I can appreciate it, but it doesn’t grab me and move me the way that music and words do. This book though? Made me feel what it’s like to be a dancer, to love to watch dancers.

Read this one. Please.

Dear authors,

If you don't speak a language fluently, don't use it in your books. As crazy as it may seem, Google Translate isn't a substitute for a native speaker.
Chère isn't an endearment. Ma chère or mon cher is, but only if you just blew 90 candles.
Très bon means nothing. I'm sorry to break it to you.

Dear authors, this is a matter of public health. Our eyes can't handle that much bleach.

I liked a lot of things about this book, despite not fully comprehending what in the hell two of the characters saw in the third. I think it says a lot that I enjoyed reading the book despite not really buying the triad relationship. Maybe I'm getting better at doing the shrug/"You do you!" thing?

No. I'm really not... So I think it's just that the things I loved about it, I loved hardcore.
