In the war against demons, Evie’s father stands against all things supernatural, including the Surmata, a race of beings that want to coexist with humans while they wage their own war against the demonic race. Raised in the Resistance, Evie struggles to stay true to herself and not fall under her father’s brainwashing. With everyone around her a possible spy for her father, Evie’s sole relief from camp life comes from her best friend Maximilian. When he introduces her to his friends outside of the Resistance, Evie discovers a whole new world and possibly a place to belong. But forces inside the camp are determined to keep Evie in her place, even if it means destroying who she is.
Note: Previously published in the Falling for Them Anthology, now out of print.
I am not a fan of amnesia & it looks like that’s a part of the story arc. Also noticed it took 2 years to get book 3 published. Not sure about this series.
This book was an excellent preview of the series. Exciting men and, while short, it wasn't anything instant, so no overdone insta-anything. The world-building is intriguing, albeit depressing, showing the MC in a training camp with a brutal father, part of a world-organization that seeks to destroy the misunderstood. I guess that's the same with every world, including ours.
I liked the bright-eyed, open-minded MC. The villains are overdone, but that fits the RH types. Only thing I'm actually confused about is who all will be her meant-to-be group? There are the two bonded who already have their chosen, so I think they are excluded. The friends of five bonded are who I'm eyeing, but there's a lot to unfold still. This book didn't venture into the all-out play, but what was shown was spicy.
The only thing that really irritated me is I HATE memory loss or memory stuff that happened at the end. Frustrating turn of play. And the book is too pricey for the page content, about 4.99 for under 150 pages. However, it was on Unlimited initially so perhaps it will return to that. Will be reading the second, which is a bit longer.
That's Finnish for "a hot mess", which is what this book (and books 2 and 3 in the series) was.
And before I rant, it turns out that I'm a member of the Surmata species/race, seeing as I can speak their language. So prepare yourself for a Finnish lesson! (The mystery language used in this series is mostly Finnish.)
This is a review for the first three books in the Suoja Guild series, and it might contain some very mild spoilers.
I have no clue what this series is about, not really truly. First, we get to know a girl called Evie, who is the daughter of one of the leaders in a resistance group. I'm not entirely sure what they're resisting, but let's go with: "Resistance against anything and anyone that isn't human". In the first, too short, book of the series, Evie is a bit of a badass, and she resists the resistance. She has a friend called Max, who is half Surmata and half demon, and he introduces her to all things supernatural.. as well as to his six friends, who make up a whole Kaveri-unit, aka a group of male Surmatas ("Kaveri" means "friend" in Finnish). Oh, and the Surmata (which is Finnish for "to kill/slay") are super handsome, super strong, somewhat magical, supernatural beings that help keep humans safe from demons. I think they get their name from the fact that they can kill demons, while ordinary humans cannot?
Later, in the first book, Evie meets Max's mate Caleb, and the six Kaveri-friends, and she has a case of insta-lust with a few of them. The book is too short to really build up to the relationships, and so the romance in the first book is a bit 'off'. And sadly, it doesn't get much better as the series progresses. When the first book ended, I wasn't even sure who Evie's love interests would be. Still not entirely sure at the end of book 3.
I'll leave the spoilery details out, but basically, the books are all hot messes. From what I could gather, the series deals with Evie's memory loss, her connection to the Surmata males, the resistance (but only a tiny bit?) and especially one creep of a dude called Dominick and his evil intentions towards Evie, and Evie joining the Suoja Guild academy. Buuuuut then a whole mess of side-tracked plot lines pop up that don't seem to connect too well with each other at any point. The flow of the plot is way off, and nothing seems to be well-built or carefully thought out.
Other messy problems include, but aren't limited to, the following: New characters are introduced out of the blue, and I'm not sure if they'll all turn out to be integral to the story. Details that perhaps should have been mentioned earlier are just dropped in at odd points of the story, or old details are repeated over and over again. Evie's character changes from book 1 onwards, and she turns into a somewhat annoying TSTL type of a girl who keeps secrets unnecessarily just so she can get beaten up over and over again. And she gets beaten up A LOT - her whole shtick seems to be "I'm a tiny damsel in destress, help me". The Surmata males first seem kind of cool, but by the end of book 3, they just keep swearing a lot and their favorite pastime is to come up with silly nicknames for Evie (yep, it's one of those books where affection comes in the form of personalised petnames).
Side-rant: One of the males calls Evie "Syameni", which bugs the poop out of me. I'm guessing it comes from "Sydämeni", which means "my heart" in Finnish, but the author didn't want to use the letter 'ä', and thus "Syameni" was born.
The basic idea or concept of the series is awesome. It's the execution that needs a heck of a lot of work. I think, perhaps, the author started the series, but didn't have a clear plan or plot for it, and things just keep getting added to the story on the fly. I soooo so so wish that this series would have been better. As it is now, I can't see how it'll be able to pick up the scattered pieces and knit itself into a whole, consistent story.
Just too friggin' short, I haven't seen it was a little more than 100 pages long. And at the same time both nothing and everything happens. I'm confused.
Good beginning of the story, left us with questions regarding several things and a couple theories that I want to know the answer to - will continue reading. It was a little short, so I don't have much by way of impressions except that I like how the characters are beginning to develop.
This book was AMAZING. I could not put it down, it really does suck you in once you start. I am curious to see how Evie's story will go, especially with the guys. There were parts of the book that really left me questioning what would happen next, lots of twist and turns with the plot. By the end of the book it left me wanting more because of the cliffhanger. I can't wait for book 2 to come out soon.
Precursor tells the story of Evie, a fledgling in the Resistance, a militia group led by her father that fights supernatural beings. But Evie disagrees with many of the Resistance's beliefs, especially their hatred of the Surmata, a supernatural race helping to protect humans from demons. In Precursor, we follow Evie's story as she befriends several Surmata males and tries to escape from under her father's thumb.
This is a great first installment in a new reverse harem (RH) series. I first read this novella in the Falling for Them anthology, and it was easily one of my favorites in that collection. Anders has crafted characters and a plot that is intriguing and makes you want to find out what happens next. Evie is strong but relatable, the villains are super creepy, and the cast of characters surrounding Evie (Max, Caleb, and the Shadewolf Kaveri) is varied and interesting.
That being said, there are some aspects of the story that are slightly problematic. The world building is a bit clumsy. It's not clear why there are demons on earth, why or how the Surmata have arrived, what role the Kosketti (humans corrupted by demons) play in the situation, or why the Resistance hates the Surmata. I think the fact that this is a novella rather than a full-length book prevents Anders from fully fleshing out the world in Precursor, but I also don't feel that this really interferes with the story. Hopefully, she'll explain more to the reader in the next book in the series. There are also some grammar/spelling errors and typos, but in my opinion they do not distract from the story.
All in all, this story does exactly what the first installment of a new series should do: make you want to read more. The story gets the reader invested in how Evie will navigate living with the Resistance while being friends with the Surmata and then ends on an amazing cliffhanger. You will read this and then immediately want to read the next book in the series.
I read this in a few hours it was so interesting. The characters are rich and the world building is spot on. I understand enough to make the world believable. Of course, the guys are to die for. Cannot wait for book two.
Lately I got into reading and collecting RH books and that’s how I found this one. It’s a shorter first book, which was originally part of a collection. Usually, I don’t read short novels, because well they are short and in my opinion they can’t be detailed enough or I just can’t get enough of the in mere 100 or so pages. However since this one became a series I decided to give it a try. I think the world building and the characters are phenomenal and even the plot is promising but this book was mainly about setting the place for the events. The premise of the story is soo amazing even judging by the little that actually happens here. The ending of the book is a huge surprise if you ask and it’s throws you a loop, however it only makes things more exciting. The writing style is not the most alluring but it still quite engaging. Still there were moments where I thought it went into too much detail manly when it came to describing places and it dragged the flow of the plot down a bit but the intensity of the plot and the personalities of the characters made it easy to look over. The main character, Evie, is likeable, she is a rebel, resisting her father screwed up views and finding small ways to show her defiance. She is unusually smart, kinda genius level; I mean at 17 she is finishing her masters at MIT. However I found it strange that despite her being rose in a ‘military’ camp and participating fight training since her early teenage years she is not really warrior type. She is attracted to the 6 supernatural from the first time they meet and it surprises her but the reverse harem element stays mostly a platonic thing yet. I absolutely loved the men, the number of them, the look of them and their different but balancing personalities. I just know that the dynamic in this harem is going to bring great things in the future books. Precursor is a great first book, one that really makes you want to know more about the characters and get more involved in the story. I’m off to the second book and eagerly waiting for the third.
I really enjoyed this book and am already anxious for the next one! The story line is right up my alley: strong female lead, supernatural, a bit of a dystopian vibe, and RH to boot. AJ Anders did an amazing job setting up a new world and helping her readers get sucked right into it, giving us background information in a way that felt natural rather than forced.
I do agree with a few other reviewers that I wish it was just a tiny bit longer. We got a nice solid intro to camp life and Max, and the nature of the end of the book means the accelerated pace at the end makes total sense, I just wish we'd gotten to know some of the other characters better in the middle. At this point I solidly know two of her guys' names, but not much about them at all, and could maybe name 2-3 others, but I'm not even sure how many there are, or how many she's met. They're blurring together a bit. I have faith that the characters will be more fully developed in the following books, and that they do have distinct personalities, I just wish I'd gotten to see them a bit.
The title, Precursor, definitely matches up with what this story is, a precursor to the series. I read it when it was in Falling For Them Anthology and love it still. This book sets up the series, introducing intriguing characters, a different world, and adds in backstory with hints to what the future brings. I loved the MC and how she stands up to her father in her own way, refusing to fall into line for him. I love Max and hate the situation he’s in. I want more on her prospective harem. I think that was the only thing I found missing was the relationship building between her and her future love interests. I’m not a fan of how it ended, but that’s just because I’m not a fan of those type of plots in general but it makes sense to go in that direction and will definitely make the next book interesting.
I’m looking forward to the next book coming out and seeing what AJ Anders does with her characters and her world. Definitely different and I recommend giving it a chance.
I loved the book, I enjoyed reading it and I can't wait for the next one! To be honest, it took me a couple of days to actually read the whole book. I keep picking it up, read about a sentence or two and then putting it back down, not because it was hard to get hooked into but because I was in a reading slump. It was like that for my other books. When I finally got over my reading slump, I regret not reading it sooner.
The first couple of pages is a little bit intense that makes you wonder what's happening, how it escalated to that situation and just makes you want to turn the page. This lost a star for me because I did feel like it was a bit rushed and some events weren't really as detailed compared to others. That aside, I feel like the reason why this felt rushed given that this is a relatively short book and the first of the series was so that the next installment will focus on how their relationship will grow and how Evie herself will grow as an individual.
It started off slow, getting us familiar with this new world. For a novella and a start to this series it was really well paced and i loved Evie! Her father is in charge of a militia thats against all things supernatural, including if not especially the Surmata. Though they're actually the food guys fighting off the demons and protecting the human race. So you guessed it her dad is a major a hole. The militia is a hard life but at least Evie has Max, her best friend who also hides a secret from the Resistance but Evie knows. And through Max she gets her first real inteoduction to the Surmata
There is a start to this being RH with at least 2 of the guys. The problem? The Surmata are incompatible with humans. I can't wait to see where this new series takes this! I absolutely loved it!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
I really enjoyed the world created by the author in this book. We meet Evie who is 17, living in a Resistance camp ruled by her father. It's a harsh, violent life that she has had to endure since the death of her mother when she was a child. There is a battle between humans, demons and the Surmata (supernatural beings) going on at this time. She meets through her friend, Max, his five bond mates and forms a friendship with the Surmata men without her father knowing. Her father opposes anything to do with the Surmata and there would be serious consequences If he ever found out. There is a Resistance soldier interested in Evie but she resists his advances despite her father pushing for her to accept him. She's betrayed by persons close to her and receives help from her friend, Max, which have some consequences. Fantastic start to a series and eagerly waiting for the next book.
I read Precursor as part of the Falling For Them Anthology. This is a well-written, unquestionably original Reverse Harem novella.
Evie is being raised in a military camp under her father's strict control. He is strongly anti-supernaturals and willing to sacrifice his own daughter to win the "war" for humanity. Evie has pretty much been cut off from everyone except her best friend, the mysterious Max. When he introduces her to his friends, Evie discovers a whole new world. This is her first chance to live for herself, but she's in even more danger now than ever before.
This book was such an enjoyable tease. It starts an intriguing story; what we know of the characters is appealing. It leaves you desperate for more!
Fantastic! Absolutely loved the heroine and the guys! I can't wait to see more interaction with her and the guys. The author creates a realistic world with her details where you literally feel and see everything the heroine is seeing. The author does a great job of character development and creating that connection between the characters and the reader. The book immediately starts off with a very intense scene during the training and gives you an introduction to our heroine's internal strength and personality. I love a strong heroine. It's very well written with an exciting plot. This is an adventure that we go on and I can't wait to read the next book. I'm completely addicted and highly recommend.
I give this book a 3.5/5 stars! I enjoyed reading it, there weren't too many confusing bits, and the story is genuinely interesting. A.J Anders made an excellent attempt at a reverse harem book that has a substantial storyline and a good setting. My one complaint about this book is the initial scene. I'm not too sure if it was necessary for the story, since there weren't more "training" scenes, but the world-building done in the scene was necessary. The actual reverse harem, for this first book in the series, is more about introducing a couple of them slowly so the reader gains an understanding of their personalities. In total, I love the story (and the boys) in this book, and can't wait to hear more about the world A. J Anders made :)
This book was a good read. I loved the concept of on one hand we have the human zealots and the other the Surmata. We see Evie does not agree with her fathers beliefs but is stuck in between a rock (her father) and a hard place (being a fledgling and helping to keep her best friends secrets). Now we get to the fun part. Evie's best friend has plans for her birthday and wow the shenanigans that those two get up too. I laughed and devoured all the pages from start to finish. (I not telling you all the shenanigans you will have to read it for yourself. ) lol. The only real issues I had was there were no more pages for me to keep turning on my kindle. Thank goodness Book 2 is just around the corner. If you are looking a for good book to read definitely give this a try.
I originally read this in the Falling For Them anthology. I think it was probably my favorite story in the whole thing. It's the first thing I've read from AJ Anders and from what I can tell it's her debut? Well if so, awesome intro into the Souja Guild series and awesome intro into the book world. This is short but it gives us the info we need. We get a feel of the world we are in, a meeting with all the important characters, a look at what could come romantically and a shocking twist that leaves you hanging and waiting for more. For those of us who read it in the antho it's been a long and highly anticipated wait. You lucky ones just reading it for the first time only have to wait until the end of the month for book 2. Definite must read for my fellow RH lovers.
After a horrendous event that killed her mother, Evie's father started an army to rid the world of demon kin. In return, Evie, his daughter, is forced to become a fledgling in training and is expected to become a trainer as well. Evie is different and doesn't want to be a trainer. She's interested more in the so called enemy her father claims to hate so much and learning about them. Upon learning Max (her best friend) is a halfling (half demon half human) she yearns to get away from her father and explore the world on her own. Trouble arises and Evie finds herself in situations she never thought would happen.
This book was full of twists and turns that I didn't see coming. It was truly amazing and I can't wait to read more of her works
I love reverse harem and read pretty much everything in that genre that I can get my hands on, so I was quite excited to be able to read Precursor. I love the world building, and although not much is said about the back story, there are enough pointers to make it realistic and mysterious. My main issue with this book is that it ends far too abruptly, just when you think the main story is going to start it ends without warning. Some characters get close to her too fast, it feels like it's all a bit rushed. I know that this was previously published in an anthology but I would have liked a few more chapters to convince me to go on to the next book (once it's out).
The book was slow to start, but once it gets going it is really good. The plot is different, and I thoroughly enjoy it. The characters could be described, appearance wise, more than they were and personality wise it is a good start but not fully developed like they should be. I did love Evie’s personality so far. I could relate to her and understand why she did things in the book. I loved that there was a little bit of everything in this book, from some action to romance. I was sad when I got to the last page and there was no more to read. This was a very good first book and am looking forward to the next installment.
I originally read this one in the Falling For Them Anthology and already then it was, hands down, my favourite. I'm glad that book two is realeasing later this month, because this one only gives a glimpse into the Souja Guild Series. The sory sets the stage for what's to come and introduces nearly all of the important characters and lets us get a feel for the world. I really love Evie and Maxs' friendship and can't wait to see how her relationship with her future love interests is going to develop, after that ending. AJ Anders writes captivationg and flawlessly and had me hooked from the first page. I'm looking really forward to book two now.
I almost stopped reading after that first scene (I honestly didn't see the point if no one found out about it). I read this as part of the FFY collection and it was kinda riddled with errors: it seemed like it was written in present and then changed to past, "Evie ensures she was in town", words like milestones were spelled mild stones, Evie was sometimes spelled Evil. Otherwise it was a pleasant surprise. It reminded me of Ash, and I remember starting Ash and wishing it were rh. Review later.
I received a free advanced reader copy of this book and voluntarily decided to review it
I was gripped from the first page, Evie lives with her father, who is Captain of the resistance against anything supernatural, and very against the Surmata. She does not agree with it all and cannot wait to escape
Through her friend Max she discovers a whole new world. This is well written and exciting from the start. I cannot wait for book 2 to see how she relates to Max's friends
Great characters, exciting storyline in this amazing fantasy tale, I highly recommend this book
I absolutely adored this book! I can't wait to see what happens next. *spoiler alert* it leaves you on a cliffhanger, but good news is book two isn't that far behind. The MC is feisty and strong, it was really easy to read her. AJ Anders can write! Putting us into the head of the characters with ease, I was easily able to conjure the pictures in my head of what was going. Well done. I love the idea amd world view of this series and can't wait to see what happens next with all the characters. Especially the MC, lol I need to know how that's going to work out.!
I really loved this book. There was a great story line and the hint of romance, I'm really excited for the second book and can't wait to see where it goes. Evie is a great character, she's strong, loyal and stays true to what she believes is right. When she first talks about Maxwell in the beginning I thought he was an older gentleman not a young soldier. When you finally meet him I loved his personality and I feel so sad for what he and his mate are going through with their soulmate. This book really leaves you wanting more, in a good way of course. I am just dying for the next installment.
