The Angel Knew Papa and the Dog

Without Mama, life in the log house at the forest's edge can be lonely for a little girl. But there's Papa for company, and the two mules, Bartholomew and Thaddeus Frisco, and the big old dog that mysteriously showed up at the end of winter. Everything about her little homestead seems sheltering and secure--that is, until an ominous storm settles over the valley and threatens to take it all away. As the flood waters rise and separate the girl from her Papa, will there be anything that can save her?

The Angel Knew Papa And The Dog is the lyrically-told, frontier-fantasy tale of a little girl's faith, courage, and amazing survival in a harsh wilderness. The book has often been described as "a children's story for all ages," and "the perfect family read-aloud."

Read to my younger grands in one sitting.

This is a numinous account of a young girl and her papa who eke out a life from a cabin in the woods by a river. The mama died (perhaps in childbirth?); her absence is not just stated but a present reality.

There are wondrous elements in this story: animals both patient and cantankerous, classic books (I *must* read Piers Plowman soon), biblical literacy, folk wisdom, a flood, and an angel. Psalm 23 is never directly referenced, but is woven throughout. Death is a reality, but the young girl has been given the faith and confidence that all will be well, even if she must go through the valley of the shadow.

I thought, as I read this aloud, that children need their appetites for beauty nurtured. Kids brought up on a diet of video games and movies might miss the many glimpses of glory. Though the pacing was initially slow and their interest flagged, once the plot turned the corner my kiddos were engaged and eager to interact with the story.

I was thankful that McKelvey didn't choose a happy-clappy ending. Joy, grief, loss, and hope are mingled and expressed up to the final sentence.

All stories have a fixed length (you can tell by the ones that get stretched too far and lose themselves), and this one is no exception. But when you read it, short as it is, you'll both wish it could have been longer, but understand it ought not be.

Since first reading Douglas Kaine McKelvey in the "Wingfeather Tales", I wanted to read more of his books. This is a very interesting book, one that's hard to put into a specific category. It's short enough to read with a young child; the writing style is lyrical and imaginative, something that older readers can appreciate; the content and themes might challenge or upset a young, sensitive reader, but those same themes could be great discussion topics for a parent with a child. Loss. The presence of God. Hope. Expectations versus reality.
I hope this author continues writing. Really enjoy his writing voice and deep appreciation for beauty.

This is a cute little story, written in such a way that it feels like just a fragment of the whole story. I liked it - it didn't overstate its ideas in any way and felt like there was a lot of hidden depth to it.

Even though it is a children's book, I would be aware of the sort of child you're reading it to - it might not be right for some. I know personally that although I appreciate it now, when younger I almost certainly would have been sad and thought the book was silly not to give a more definite resolution to their problems.

This a strong little book. Beautiful writing and emotionally rich story telling. I do wish that it was the first of a series and that there were more coming.

I had no idea what to expect from this story, but I'm sure glad I read it. The title is, strangely, a perfect fit for the book. Delightful in latent meaning. Somehow I place it down pricked by a sehnsucht sadness but comforted by the nearness of the numinous.

The prose was pretty, but the story was pretty basic, definitely not what I was expecting from McKelvey

Fine folk-tale dealing with loss and family love. Nice short read for 6 or 7 year olds and older with some great turns of phrase throughout.

Beautiful story. I read this in just a few evenings as I was readying for bed. As I finished the last page, I cried. Both from the story's own sadness to the personal feelings of lost dreams, mamas and life as we know/knew it.
I purchased this book from the local homeschool convention for our family & had the author sign it - I was not 100 % sure what the story line was, but just had a hunch it would be a family favorite. He signed it to my children "Be very brave" - perfect words for this book. We ended up reading aloud it as a family, all piled up on the bed, just as the author says is his hope for the book in his note at the end. It will be one we will return to again and again & that for our family is the sign of a well written or told story.
As a side note, just as in my review of one of S.D. Smith's books - we met the author personally at his booth in a homeschool convention and thoroughly enjoyed visiting with him. Such a humble, gentle spirit - we look forward to meeting him again and reading future literature he produces. I love to use my purchase power to encourage authors that are seeking to put high quality literature that strives to cultivate character into the hands of young people.

A simple story, that like the flood, sneaks up on you with its powerful undercurrent of depth to display the ordinary and extraordinary ways that we are woven together in the middle of pain and uncertainty into a tapestry of grace that we know incompletely but perceive in part through such beautiful stories as this.

I was surprised by the beauty of this short story.

"And I knew in the same way that no matter what happened to us, even if it was time to close our eyes and take our hand and lead us down through the valley of the shadow of death, where Mama had walked long ago, all was well. The angel was with us. The angel of the Lord."

The father daughter relationship in this story is beautiful. The resilience of the characters as well as the self reliance of the people reminded me of Cynthia Rylant and Wendell Berry. I loved this book. Looking forward to a sequel!

I read this book because it was offered for free on Amazon.  The Angel Knew Papa and the Dog is both very short as it is extremely different.  This could both be read and enjoyed by a child or an adult.  The chapters are lyrical, unresolved, and also very sad at times.  The little girl's mother passed away and she lives in a log cabin with her father; their life is simple, but followed by her child-like excitement.  After a storm comes, the little girl is very frightened that a flood will take her and everything she knows away.  I felt the author wrote the book longer than he should have and could have finished it a little bit earlier.  However, I found it refreshing that I could still read the book quickly and enjoyably.  The writing style is very creative and this was something that definitely compelled me to found out more.

The Angel Knew Papa and the Dog is a powerful gem of a story. Sometimes, short books pack a punch, and Douglas Kaine McKelvey's story of frontier life, a little girl and her papa, some precious animals and an angel is heartwarming and beautiful. This story is about God's protection and omnipotence. He knows us all in every predicament as do His ministering servants, and The Angel Knew Papa and the Dog is a story of reassurance. Even if story points are not all neatly resolved, the book provides comfort.
I love that McKelvey's narrator is a little girl. The voice is sweet without being cloying. I also adored the animals, particularly Thaddeus, (a very important mule), and Lewis and Clark, (a very special dog).

Thoroughly recommended if you are searching for a comforting and powerful read. God bless you all.

This book is relatively short, a pleasant children's fiction chapter book. While I read this book, perhaps it's not fair for me to count it. Sometimes I struggle with falling and/or staying asleep at night, and in those situations, I'll grab my Kindle to read until I'm tired again. This was a book I read during a couple of those middle-of-the-night stretches. All that to say, my memory is foggy in points.

Here's what I do know: it's beautifully written, and the ending seemed abrupt to me after the lovely pace of the rest of the book.

Rich in imagery and metaphor, this story is for all ages, and one I will re-read and share for years to come. I was swept up into it and deeply struck at 2 different moments in the story. The ending leads the reader to a beginning of sorts. The author's note, after 21 years of hindsight in writing the story, gave the story a richer aftertaste for me. What an awesome and unexpected place to find ourselves revealed! Highly recommend.

I read this in a hour or two. With haunting prose, this is a tiny and profound little short story/novelette that is pure emotional damage. This is an old, obscure, but heavily underrated book and definitely one of the best pieces of Christian fiction I've read. Made my eyes water a bit, which is very hard to do. Thaddeus, you shall be remembered.

This was written in 1996, which surprised me. Dang. Thats a long time ago. The only other biggish work of fiction this guys written is the also very good Places Beyond the Maps from Wingfeather Tales, which he wrote in 2016. Supposedly hes been working on a manuscript for a SF/F YA novel for the last literal decade. Hes a great writer. Hurry up!

I'm trying to re-read a couple of books every year, and am finding that most books are better the more you read them. The first time I read The Angel Knew Papa and the Dog, I felt like I didn't understand it at all, probably because I hadn't really known what to expect.

On the second read, I still feel like I don't get all of it, yet also enjoyed its richness and was comforted by it. I loved McKelvey's afterward as well.

I suspect a third read is coming in the next year or two.

This book was fabulous! As good as the classics like Little House on the Prairie, that take you to another world and acquaint you with a family you soon fall in love with. Also packed with an adventure like story and a heart wrenching plot of relationships and experiences. It was a quick read and a fun experience! I want there to be another story about these characters.

I had no idea what to expect when I picked this book up. I am a fan of The Rabbit Room, so I had heard of this book and it’s reprinting. It is a short read but it is not a flippant or mindless read. The story has endeared itself to me and I expect it will be a book I reach for over and over again. I especially loved this version’s author’s note.

People seem to love The Angel Knew Papa and the Dog, but I’m just kind of meh about it. It was a relatively sweet story, but I never really cared much about what happened to any of the characters. The angel part was very anti-climactic. It’s very short, so if you want to read it, it’s not much of a time investment, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to do so.

As someone who cherished the Little House saga, I found some warm similarities in McKelvey's finely written frontier story of man versus nature, though "The Angel" maintains its own spirit. There were turns of phrase that made me pause to catch my breath, fear. Evangeline's narration discloses an old soul full of quiet wisdom.
