The stories in this collection are filled with brutally honest characters who reveal their deepest desires as they endearingly win over readers, then break their hearts. A hospice worker falls for his dying, married patient and is forced to question what he will and won't do for love; a 1960's debutante defies society's conventions and takes drastic measures in order to maintain her social status; an elderly mother gets lost in the Lord's Prayer as she shares her life's joys, disappointments and years of abuse; a young father changes the course of his family on the same day America's fate is irrevocably altered; Mai Ly is taken from her family and forced into an unfamiliar and callous world where the only solace she can find is in Cuoi, a man she believes watches over her from the moon; a teenager finds herself the spectator of another girl's tragic life and is forced to accept the physical and emotional cruelty that exists in the world. These characters' stories, and the others that fill this collection, will stay with the reader as a reminder that everyone has a private place filled with the longing to be seen, accepted, and understood.

This book was excellent! I highly recommend it. Ms. Heidle draws you as the reader in, with each story in this book. This is a book of short stories. Each with it's tint of darkness. What I call darkness you may call reality. Issues that are not normally spoken about but are very real. Ms. Heidle's writing makes you connect with the characters in each story. You see their world through their eyes. You experience their feelings.

I can't recommend this book enough. I am hoping Ms. Heidle writes more. She is a talent!

A wonderful collection of short stories -- each one more captivating than the next. Lisa Heidle is a master storyteller whose characters jump off the page. I don't know if I could pick a favorite of the nine stories as each one drew me in. Creating such depth of characters, that you actually care about, in a short story is no easy feat and Heidle nails it with each one in this collection. Loved it!

Heidel doesn't disappoint with a short story collection that is both captivating and disturbing in a way that makes readers consider each of the stories' end, long after finishing it. A chilling pleasure full of Heidel-Esque revelations and twists!
