This book is set in 1965 and is seen through the eyes of a young boy who goes by the name of Ponyboy. Throughout the book, we read about Ponyboy and his adventures being part of the Greaser gang, and their troubles with the upper-class gang called the Socs. The Greasers seem like the classic bad boys with leather jackets, white shirts, and slicked-back hair. The Socs, on the other hand, are seen as the jocks wearing their letterman jackets, school colors, and showing off their expensive cars. At one point in the book, one of the Socs named Cherry starts to take an interest in one of the boys in the Greaser gang. This causes a lot of conflict between the two gangs and in an act of self-defense Johnny-one of the Greaser boys-kills one of the Socs. The Socs threaten Johnny and the Greasers by saying they were going to call the cops and have them all arrested. Since the Greasers were seen as the lower class they knew no one would believe their word against the Socs. So, in an act of fear Ponyboy took Johnny to a church where they could stay the night and hide from the cops. Sadly, the church caught on fire, and Johnny was hit by a burning beam while trying to save some children who were in the church. Johnny was about to pass away in the hospital but before he did he gave Ponyboy some good advice. This advice sticks with Penyboy for the rest of the book. I honestly really enjoyed this book. It was very well written and full of adventures. Even though I thought this book was really good, there were some parts I was concerned about. I would definitely suggest this book to those who are in eighth grade and up. Mostly because there is gang violence, political class warfare, and underage smoking and drinking. This book is definitely meant for those entering or at mature ages.
This was a very interesting book to read; the story is relatable and easy to follow. After reading this book, I wanted to know a little about the writer, it was no surprise when I found out she was a teenage writer. I could tell by the story filled with mostly teenagers from different parts of the track, talked about issues with bullying and so many other teen and gang experiences. The feel of the book was personal! then the names of the characters was another dead give away -Ponyboy, Sodapop lol. any age group can read this book and enjoy the emotions it incites, even though it was written years back it is still a relevant read today and that's a plus!
