He Lived Next Door - 3 ★'s

Be advised: I don't usually read reviews for books before I read them unless the book I'm interested in has a lot of low stars. This could be an exception for a lot of readers, in fact, I'm not sure I would have read it if I had known.

"You can't know someone's story without reading the pages of their book."

I loved that line and was very optimistic going into this story although the prior books of Portia Moore that I have read, have dealt with some major issues between the husband wife. This one is no exception.

Bryce and Chassidy met in college and when he heard her say the quote above, he knew she was the one! Okay, totally cheesy and dramatic but a little romantic too.

But that's all in the past and now it's five years later. Slowly, we learn that they had gotten pregnant but the baby was stillborn and it was devastating to them both. There's also some other issues but at this point, they both have pulled away from each other and Chassidy doesn't feel like she can discuss it with Bryce.

description

I was a little miffed with Bryce at this point because even though he didn't know about something, he treated her horribly. Understandably, he was frustrated but it still pushed her away unnecessarily. She then tells Bryce she needs some time and he moves out.

Right when this is happening, Chassidy meets her new neighbor, Carter, who is very sweet and of course, good looking. Luckily, he is always very considerate and appropriate. However, Davien is not.

Chassidy is a writer and Davien is her new agent. He is also good looking but he is far from appropriate. And Chassidy is so starved for any attention that she doesn't stop it when she should.

There's quite a bit of drama and again, more times to be even more miffed at Bryce. Ugh. And then we get to the seventy percent mark and it all goes bananas! That's right...b-a-n-a-n-a-s!!

description

This is where the little warning above comes into play. Maybe this is meant to be a spoiler but when you pick a book because it's a contemporary romance and it morphs into something else, I think readers have a right to know!

description

And just so you know, I don't have a problem with the "theme", it's just if I had wanted to read a book like that, I would have picked one.

So, up until the seventy percent mark, I enjoyed the book. I think if we had had more of Bryce and Chassidy being in love, I would have felt their connection more and not have thought Bryce was as much of a jerk. It did help getting his POV but just not enough.

Happily, the first part of the epilogue is quite sweet. The second part sets things up for more books per the author.

This book isn’t for everyone, as in it is not everyone cup of tea, but I like it. It was a cute romance with a twist. I like the writing style and it had me captivated. It’s a four star because there is some things I didn’t like but for the most part I really liked it. It had a good plot and great character development. It shows what real relationships sometimes go through and how they take work and everything.

I seriously do not know how to right this review and I feel really bad that nothing I can say will make my views shine in a positive light. There is nothing wrong with this book, Portia Moore is a phenomenal writer and I devoured her if I Break series. This book just wasn't for me at all and I really wanted to love it but couldn't. Without saying to much the story subject matter just isn't my personal beliefs or morals and it's not something I would have picked up if I knew what the jist/moral of the story was going to be about. I feel guilty and deflated that I couldn't give it my all and even though I did finish the book it took me some time to do so.

The plus points for me is that I can't fault Portia's writing at all and the main plot of the story will with no doubt satisfy the majority of readers because it is in it's own way a beautiful lesson in love. When the twist is revealed you won't have saw it coming in a million years and it totally changes the stories direction leaving your mind thinking what just happened because it wasn't what you were imagining like at all. The characters are portrayed well and each have their own personalities although I found Bryce a bit weak at times and wanted him to grow a pair so to speak.

Overall I will leave people to make their own mind up as I wouldn't want to deter or sway anyone from giving it a chance. Just because it wasn't for me doesn't mean to say others won't enjoy it.

**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book.**

I'm not sure how to feel about this book.

Chassidy's life is falling apart. After losing her second child, she's decided to hold her pain inside and grieve alone. In doing so, she pushes her husband away and their marriage reaches a turning point that she isn't sure they can come back from. Add in a tempting agent and mysterious neighbor and you have a recipe for disastrous decision-making.

Bryce wants his wife back. The woman he fell in love with before he even saw her face. But the loss of their son has taken more than just their child from his life. His wife is no longer whole and she won't communicate with him. He loves her but he's finding it hard to understand why she keeps pushing him away. Even a guardian angel may not be able to save their marriage in time.

This has left me with some seriously conflicting thoughts. First, the description of this book is entirely misleading and I fear will lead to a lot of negative reviews because of it. With books, expectations are important. If you advertise X but provide Y, you won't get the intended results. Had this synopsis accurately portrayed the story within, I still might have picked it up since I like paranormal romance books. Others won't be so forgiving.

So in case you are wondering, this is a second chance romance with a paranormal angel/demon theme and a somewhat religious aspect. You're welcome.

On one hand, I cannot say anything negative about the way the book was written. It's clear the author has a talent for building a story, even if I didn't love the story being told. But editing? No. Even for an ARC, it was terribly edited with missing and misspelled words, punctuation blunders everywhere, and sentences that just didn't make sense. I really hope this gets edited properly before being released. However, I did read this entire thing in a single sitting so there is something to be said for the storytelling. It captured my attention and even when I was cursing the terrible grammar, I was still immersed in the story. That reason alone explains my rating. I would consider reading more of this author's work but I would need to know what I'm getting beforehand. No more surprises.

My biggest problem lies in the severely unequal character development. We see things through both Chassidy and Bryce's views, yet Bryce's POV is mostly in the past. We get to see how he comes to fall in love with Chas and it's easier to connect with him. With Chassidy, we're dropped right into the middle of her turmoil and I couldn't find it in me to sympathize with her for pretty much the entire story. I wanted to. But all I saw out of her were selfish and terrible decisions. I can forgive a few of them but it was one after another and the savior of the story wasn't present enough to really make an impact in her life.

I didn't even have a problem with the religious aspect of the book. I am not a religious person but respect the rights of others. I also enjoy reading books that feature angels and demons so this wasn't a bad element of the story for me. If you don't like religion in your stories and aren't a fan of the angel/demon trope, skip this one.

But the angel/demon element really wasn't as prominent as it could have been. And to be honest, it probably *should* have played a larger role. Had there been more angelic intervention and less selfish stupidity on Chassidy's part, I might have liked this more. I am all for a couple finding their way back together, again. But our couple are separate for 90% of the book and you can't fix something when you're not there. I would have much preferred to watch their struggle to reconnect rather than Chas's inability to decide whether to cheat or not.

I'm not sure if I believe that Chas deserved her happy ending. Bryce did. He never really gave temptation more than a fleeting thought. But the choices that Chas continued to make were baffling to me. I hate people who cheat, no matter what their so-called "reasons" are. There may not be any actual intercourse, but it crosses the line several times. If you're like me, and despise unfaithful and disrespectful heroines (or heroes), this isn't the book for you.

If I could rework this story, I would have had the angel reveal himself sooner and to both spouses (separately) to help guide them back to each other. The demon still could have tried to sway each of them, but I think saving their marriage should have played a bigger role in Chassidy's decisions. I also wouldn't have taken Bryce out of the picture. If not for his flashbacks, he really wouldn't have been in the story at all. I would have liked to see the two fighting more, making progress, hitting setbacks, and still fighting on. Maybe then I would have believed Chas's turnaround was genuine.

In closing...
So despite the author's incredible storytelling abilities, this wasn't the book for me. It was a good story, but one I won't be reading again. If you have the ability to be more sympathetic to an ailing heroine, this is a good story for you.

ARC provided by the author in exchange of an honest review.

Ok, wow, I've had a hard time writing this review.

First things first: the book is not bad. I can see many people liking it and giving it very good rating. Portia's writing is as good as always, after all. But it is just not my cup of tea.

From the very beginning, I found Bryce way too cheesy. Seriously, if someone did to me what Bryce did to Chassidy (the whole "I fell in love with your voice so I need to find you even if it's the last thing I do" thing), I would have rolled my eyes and tried not to laugh in his face. I like romance, but probably the more subtle kind? Because things like that don't really go with me; much less at the beginning, when I don't even know the character.

But then we go to Chassidy and I really liked getting into that first chapter, I'll always love it when an author portrays complex feelings so well. The book was going really good actually, but somewhere around after she breaks down on Jax and Tiffany's... things started to go a bit downhill for me.

It just got to a point where I was just mad at Chassidy and couldn't relate to her anymore. The way she was acting and the way she was justifying her actions, it all just got me frustrated and irritated towards her. Honestly, I was 100% team Bryce. I would have liked more Bryce's POV in the present and not just the past, to be honest, I think it would have balanced things out. Basically, I liked the story but got frustrated with it.

So then we have the plot. The plot is supposed to be Carter moving next door, but after that happens, we actually don’t hear from him in a while. To me, it felt a bit flat. Things start to happen again when Davien comes along and then there’s this revelation about Carter. There will be more books with Carter and Davien and, even though this whole thing is not exactly my thing, I'm pretty curious. Portia already has me hooked on her books so I'll always keep an eye on them.

This is a bit of a struggle for me to review and I have left it a few days before putting my words down.

I love this author. I was blown away with her other books. And the themes she explores were so far out of my comfort zone they have left a mark on me in a sea of NA Romance Tropes.

This was well written. I felt angst. I believed in the characters, their POV, their struggles. I wanted to know what was going to happen - whether they were going to be tested and fail. Our characters are tested with the death of a child very early on and we see a couple in the various stages of grief. As is understandable, they are both dealing with this in different ways and their livelihoods and personalities that once made their marriage strong, have become a thorn in their relationship. We see temptation, mistrust, depression, anxiety and deteriorating friendships. All of which is written so well.

There is a twist at 70%. I don't have a problem with this twist. I am a huge fan of PNR, particularly angels, so when this came into play, I could totally roll with it. But there's no dystopia or heavenly war here my friends. The story becomes secondary to that of ones faith being tested by trials and how finding God and re-finding your faith will guide you through to acceptance of death and resolution of your depression. Depressed? Faith is the answer. Temptation? God will find a way. Death of a loved one? God's purpose. Shit life? Just a test from God.

I am an atheist. I still believe in something other and am open-minded about a lot of things. I did feel that the last third read as some sort of pamphlet I would get through my door from the local Christian group. But as that pamphlet is usually pretty obviously from the local church, maybe has a lovely big picture of Jesus on the Cross, or some scripture on the front, I can make a pretty snap decision to know it's not for me. To get through 200 pages and realise that's what I'm reading? Yeh I'm not down with that.

Just to say. I STILL LOVE PORTIA MOORE!!! Please please read her other series - If I Break is just KILLER. Sadly... this one wasn't for me.

Thanks for this ARC which I received through RIRI from the New Adult Book Club.

Couldn't stand the selfish, bitchy hypocrite of a heroine! Bryce deserved so much better than what he got with her and I wish he'd divorced her and moved on. After everything she went through, I should've felt some sympathy for her, but I didn't.

And I didn't even get to the God/angel part!

I don't think author is for me.

Married couple being tested by the loss of a child and the couple is not together 90% of the book.

Nope, none of these elements are the ones I want to read about in my romance book. Although I really loved this writer's "If I Break" series, I need to avoid this book.

This book is so hard to rate, while there was nothing wrong with the book, I feel quite mislead by the cover and the synopsis. I got to 68% and was like...What??
I can guarantee that you won't see the plot twist coming.

*Normally I don't do spoilers but there are some spoilers in here just to let readers know about trigger warnings.

I love Portia Moore'a books so much. I remember first picking up her If I Break book and devouring the whole series in two days. It was amazing. The way she writes and puts all different emotions in her words is truly magical.

The book deals with infant loss and the toll it takes on a marriage. It is an extremely emotional book and the emotions hit me like a bus. I was in tears reading this at work from the 2nd chapter. My heart ached for them. Moore really put into words how so many women feel and how it affects their whole world.

I was deeply invest into this book until about 80% through. There is a very religious/paranormal plot twist that was so abrupt, it kind of disconnected me from the books and characters. I still wanted to know how everything turned out, but felt that the story wasn't flowing as smoothly as before. It's like the car(book) was going really fast on the highway and all of a sudden it swerved down a different lane that was full of bumps.

I still liked the book but I really wish that if that was going to be the nature of the book, it would have just started with that from the beginning.

This is a very different story from what I thought from the title. I was upset with the main female character at first but....As I read more and more, I thought I had it figured out but, BAM !!! The story resonated with me in so many ways. Keep an open mind and you'll see the message is clear....it conquers all !!! Thank you Portia for sharing a powerful message.

Warning!!!! This review will likely have spoilers!!!

Today, I played a game I dubbed "Kindle Roulette." See, I download books daily, many, between 3 and 5 usually. I snag them up when they go on sale or as freebies, stocking my kindle with stories the way doomsday prepers stash canned goods and water bottles. This means that I have thousands of unread books waiting for my attention, and a terrible inability to make decisions, ever. Kindle Roulette helps. Quick swipe-scroll with my eyes closed and a drop of my finger tip gets me a story for the day.
I tell you about this, because I know if I had looked at this books GR rating or read any reviews, that I would not have chosen to read this. I don't remember downloading it, it was way down in my library, so it's been there a long time.
I tend to stay away from Christian Fiction because my experience with it in the past was unfavorable. It so often feels, well, preachy. I don't do preachy. It irritates me and gives me a headache from all the eye-rolling I end up doing. I figured out where this story was going pretty early on, and between the religious bend and the heroine who came across so bitter and selfish, I almost called it a dnf. I'm glad I stuck with it.
Because you know what this girl loves? Modern stories based on myths and paranormal entities. I'm also a huge fan of stories with the married-folk dynamic going on. Much of the romance genre focuses on falling in love and getting to the alter because that's always exciting. But, as someone who's been married for nearly 22 years, I can safely say that the truly amazing stuff happens after "I do." I love stories about damaged souls and dark vs. light, good vs. evil. I also love stories that break my heart and piece it back together. Stories that make me feel.
This book had all of that.
Honestly, the only reason this book didn't get five stars is because of Chas. I wanted to feel sympathetic towards her because of her struggle, but we know, from her inner monologue, that she knew what she was doing the entire story through. I spent more time annoyed with her than not and that really took away from the story for me.

Honestly, WOWWWWW. I kind of had an inkling of what was going to happen but that was as we got close to the end. I wasn't expecting that huge twist! But that doesn't mean that I didn't like it. I absolutely loved it. It made me cry, the heartache and the pain, a sort of special kind of twist only Portia Moore could pull off. This story will test you. It will ruin you and drive you insane. There are so many different ways this could end but you are never sure until you see it coming. It will consume you, the male characters will drive you crazy (both good and bad) and you won't know who to root for. It's a story of uncertainty, but it's also a story of love and heartache, of pulling through your grief and coming out on top. A story about how far pain can take you deeper into the pits of hell, of how sometimes love isn't enough. It will destroy you, but of course you knew that, it's Portia Moore.

You won't regret reading this book. And while there are a few of you that will disagree with this book, keep an open mind. It's a story that will motivate you, inspire you and make you feel good about your life. Be prepared and just be ready to love.

Well, this story went in a much different direction than I originally thought. Just when you think
you have it all figured out, the author surprises you. I like that!! He Lived Next Door is very different from what I am use to from this author. I was wowed by this author when I somehow picked up If I Break, 3 years ago...wait, how could it be 3 years?!? I have been anticipating every one of Portia’s releases ever since, which have been in the If I Break series. Until now!!

When I heard she had a new story line coming out, I jumped at the chance to get my hands on it. Be warned, it’s different, though!!! He Lived Next Door is based around Bryce and Chassidy. They are college sweethearts who have been dealt a challenging deal at marriage. My heart broke for Chassidy and all she went through, but good lord, I wanted to shake her and tell her to open up to her husband!!

And Bryce…get your head out of your ass!!! Don’t get me wrong, he is an amazing and romantic guy, but he is a guy, and doesn’t get it a few times.

This story takes us through a rocky couple of months in Chassidy and Bryce’s life, and that’s all I am saying about that because you don’t want anyone to spoil it for you. The only thing I will say, because you find out quickly, is that there are two other guys of huge importance in this story ;) I know, I am evil. HEHE!!

So, I am sure you are wondering why I gave it only 3.5 stars if I love this author so much, right?!? Well, as good as this story is, it didn’t even compare to this author’s previous stories. I didn’t feel the connection between the characters, as much as I would have liked. I felt that there was a lot of discussion and a lot of buildup in the beginning, with a bit of a rush in the last 30%.

Overall, good story!! And still one of my go to authors :)

This was a book that had a pretty crazy plot twist. It was very unexpected, but entertaining. This book talks to all different things, including but not limited to: love ( I mean, of course), trust, faith, honesty, and family. There are difficult issues to overcome, and subjects not always comfortably discussed for all people, but it's a real page turner. I had a hard time putting it down.

4.5 Man, this woman can write. I'm at a loss for words here. This is one of those books that just keeps getting better and better as you read it. I'm so glad none of the reviews I read prior to reading this gave spoilers away. I have to say this book is NOT AT ALL what you think it is at first. Even while you're reading it you think you grasp the concept and then BAM! I loved the way this book played out. He Lived Next Door really delves deep into what marriage is really like. The trials and tribulations, the reality of what really goes on behind closed doors. I truly enjoyed reading this and the ending was just ugh, well it really got me thinking!!!!

4 Crown

A new standalone romance from the author of the fabulous If I Break series. This is completely unrelated to any of her previous books.

Chassidy is struggling with life. Following a double tragedy her life is falling apart at the seams and she is unable to stop it. She knows that she is pushing the love of her life away, but she feels so helpless under the grey cloud that she now lives under. One thing she does know is that the love she has for Bryce still remains, but is it enough? Are her failures too much? Does loving him mean letting him go? And then Carter moves next door…

Well if you are reading this thinking that this is remotely like Portia’s If I Break series, think again. This book is completely different, the only thing links them is that once again Portia has created a very unique story.

This book in lots of ways is a hard read. I don’t say that in a negative way, far from it actually. Most people will read the title and synopsis and assume that you will be reading a book about a standard love triangle and indeed some may be put off by that. That is not this book. This books subject matter is one that many women deal with and the story delves into the effects and repercussions it can have on a seemingly perfect marriage. Told mostly from Chassidy POV, we get flash backs to happier times from Bryce. It is heart-breaking and poignant and although I am lucky enough to have not experienced what Chassidy does, I think how she copes will resonate with every woman reading it.

Carter moves in next door when Chassidy is at her lowest. Her husband is away and she feels so alone. He becomes her sounding board and a much needed friend. But when others step into the fray, can he continue to be her friend? Will Chassidy make the right decisions or will she cross a line that can’t be uncrossed?

I am going to leave it there as I don’t want to give anything away, but this book and how the storyline developed blindsided me. Expect the unexpected guys. Let’s face it, if you have read Portia Moore’s previous books then you know she likes to throw in a curve ball or two and she certainly didn’t let me down. Not the type of book I would usually read, but beautifully written as I have come to expect from this author and different enough that I certainly found it a page turner. Portia has certainly poured her soul into this one and I applaud her for it.

If you want a book full of the trials and tribulations of keeping a love alive in the most trying of circumstances. A book full of emotion, faith, love, loss and heartbreak, He Lived Next Door will certainly deliver. This review was originally posted on Perusing Princesses

This book has nothing to do with Portia’s previous books. This is a completely new story.
I have to say this book blow me away I didn’t know what to expect when I started reading this book. It is different from Portia’s other books but just as good, once I started I couldn’t put it down. I will say a bit about the story but try not give anything away.

They are both going through some difficult stuff and Chassidy is struggling with it and she seems so lost she thinks Bryce doesn’t care and they are growing apart.

Bryce her hubby I really liked. He loves Chassidy, but she is pushing him away. I really felt bad for him at times. We get some of his their past when they met and it seemed to be love at first sight. he really does love her.

Then a handsome stranger moves next door to them. Carter I really fall for him he was so sweet and did became a great friend to Chassidy. He seems too good to be true.

Chassidy is a writer and she gets an email that changes things and she meets a guy called Davien and he becomes her agent. Does he have her best interests at heart or does he have other intentions.
I had so many emotions while reading I really connected with Chassidy having been through what she has gone through I am sure a lot of women can, but she also annoyed me at times I didn’t like some of the decisions she makes at times I just wanted to jump in the book and shake her and tell her to talk instead of trying to deal things on her own.

This book was so good and as I said it kept me turning the pages to figure how it would all end and it has a Twist I really didn’t see coming. If you like books that tests you with emotions this book is it. At times, I was shouting at my kindle I had to put it down at some parts because it was getting to me. But I had to keep going back I couldn’t get enough of the story I needed to know more. I really didn’t want this book to end.

Looking forward to what comes next from this author.

I've been a fan of Portia Moore for a while now. I LOVED her If I Break series but I was worried I wouldn't feel as strongly about new characters and a new series. Boy was I wrong!! She managed once again to write a book that I was sucked into and couldn't wait to finish.

Portia Moore has such a unique way of making you think you have the story all figured out and then throwing an unbelievable twist at you. This book is full of heartbreak that will absolutely make you cry. She approaches the subject of loss in such a powerful yet respectful way. And of course, after its all said and done, she gives you a happily ever after that makes you smile.

He Lived Next Door follows the struggles of Chassidy in her current life while also showing glimpses of the past through her husband Bryce. Chassidy is a character that is so broken and holds so much pain. She is so lost from losing 2 babies that she feels her marriage is slipping through her fingers. In her despair she meets 2 men that impact her life. Her neighbor, Carter and her agent, Davien. Both are very different from one another but both give her things she thinks she wants. She's torn between fighting her feelings for the sweet boy next door, resisting the sexy and confident agent, and just plain fighting with her husband.

Nothing is ever as it seems though, especially in Portia Moore's world. While Chassidy seems to become more and more lost in what is right and wrong, a HUGE shock changes everything she thinks she knows. Her pain consumes her and takes her down a path that could end her marriage. In the end you watch Chassidy and Bryce find strength in one another. They find the love that was almost lost.

You will feel every emotion with Chassidy. Feel ever ounce of pain. Cry every tear. Laugh with her. And ultimately you will fall in love with Chassidy, Bryce, Carter, and Davien.

I don't presume to know or understand what Chassidy was going through since I have not been in her shoes before although it's clear how isolating and devastating it can be. So I can comprehend how it challenges a marriage, even with the strongest of bonds. I was initially engaged in Chassidy and Bryce's story, wondering how far things would have to go so far under before it was time to pick up the pieces and start over. Chassidy and Bryce alternate in their POVs, with Chassidy being the main narrator.

So with a title like He Lived Next Door, obviously there is someone who moves in next door. While Chassidy sorts out the feelings and thoughts in her head, Carter, her new neighbor, and Davien, her new agent, pop into her life. They both provide distractions in different ways, exposing her vulnerabilities and steering her in opposite directions with guided intentions, although not necessarily in the way you would assume. In the meantime, Bryce is still in the picture trying to figure out what is widening the gap between he and his wife and if their relationship can still be saved.

I enjoyed the aspect of the story that focuses on the marriage and how two people who love each other the way they do hit a rough patch. There was definitely a build up of angst and emotion. What didn't quite work out so well for me was the revelation towards the end that shifted the course of the story into something more along the lines of a personal paradigm. Was it unpredictable? Absolutely, I definitely didn't anticipate that at all although I suspected something along those lines. However, this would be a matter of personal preference on behalf of the reader. Otherwise, the writing was still well done and the underlying message is meaningful.

What a read! I love this author she is such a great writer but she will always give you a twist somewhere that you did not expect. This book was no different. I love Bryce! He is every woman's dream. He puts his heart out there to Cas and she just keeps turning him away. I know that she is broken but I kept finding myself really disliking her for this. He was trying maybe not as hard as he should/could have but he is man. I just really wanted to shake some sense into her. Then the twist comes!! I so was not expecting this at all. But it was really such a breath of fresh air to me at that point!! I really didn't feel my heart tugging like it was before. I wasn't stressing over the outcome anymore. At this point, I could not put the book down!!! I had to finish the story to see what the outcome of Bryce and Cas was going to be. Before, I would have to take a break. Not because the story wasn't good or I didn't want keep reading. I was afraid that I was going to get mad and throw my kindle. (This has almost happened before!!) I just kept hoping that Cas would see the light and wouldn't do something that she would not regret later on!! I just kinda wanted to knock some sense into her. I would have liked to have seen more of the present day Bryce instead of the flashbacks of him. The flashbacks where great and were very important to the story. But I would have liked to have seen more of the present day from him like we got of Cas. I loved this story. I love Carter, and cannot wait to see more of him. I love his character not some much of a fan of Davien. I hope I see a lot less of him in the future and lot more of Carter. I don't want to give anything a way, once you read the story, you will understand why!!!

I a great read again by Portia! I highly recommend this book. However, this book is not going to be for everyone. There is some sensitive and emotional issues in this book. It is going to be hard for some people to ready. There is also some religious aspects in this book. Those are not for everyone either. I loved this book and think that she has done an awesome job with it and the story line. I so can't wait for Carter!!!

"What did I do to deserve you" she asks through tears.
"You exist"

I dived straight into this,
One I loved the cover,
Two, I loved the blurb,
Three, It's Portia Moore.

I've read previous books by this author and loved them, the heartwarming, emotional stories, so understandably I dove in.

This isn't my usual kind of read, it probably won't be your usual kind of read. This book will get so many different reactions.

I've been on a rollercoaster ride with these characters and I've never felt this before but the message in this book feels tangable like you can feel it, it reaches out and pricks your subconscious if you let it.

Portia Moore has delivered a powerful message and I don't know how to describe it only that she cleverly disguised it within a romance book.

A hard book to review, I respect Portia Moore for expressing her faith through the work of fiction combining the two.

For the romance part of the story, I felt the heartache, the marriage problems Bryce and Chassidy were facing which are so very real for so many today, struggling with loss, not communicating with others when you hurt, struggling alone and facing temptation in the moments of weeknes.

This is one you have to read and come to your own personal conclusion and like I've said, I feel it will have so many different reactions depending on how the reader receives it. Just go in open minded.

(Spoilers Ahead)

Okay where do I start? I'm giving it 2 stars, the writing was fantastic. I've read books by Moore before. She's a brilliant author. I just have some problem with this book.

The description doesn't flow with the book at all, and I totally understand the author wanted a shock factor, but I feel less shocked and more turned away.

*****Again Spoilers. Waring you. *****

I absolutely hated the angel aspect of this book, it completely ruined it for me. It actually wasn't a shock more of a shock the book turned from a broken romance and into a Christian novel.

I understand people have faith and they have their religion, but I feel like this book was just shoved on me. With no warning at all, I love crazy twists in books but this one just wasn't good for me personally.

I liked most of the characters, save for Bryce. I actually hated him. He was really unlikeable for me, I didn't click at all with him. I also didn't care for Carter or Nicole. And it wasn't the angel aspect for me, I just didn't like him from the start.

I think that if Moore would of wrote a description about it being more of a faith based/Coming to terms with God , she could of wrote to a bigger audience.

2 stars.

I received this book as an arc in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

He Lived Nextdoor is a unexpectedly touching book by author Portia Moore. This is the story of a husband and wife who have lost their way in the aftermath of an unspeakable tragedy. With a couple of beautiful distractions, their marriage will be tested. There is a surprising twist which is unlike anything I would have expected. This book is thoughtful, well written and will undoubtedly dive deep into emotions regarding love, loss, loyalty and even spirituality.
I laughed, I cried, I couldn't put this book down but I'm rating with only four stars just because it was missing the steaminess I have come to expect from Ms. Moore's work. The storyline is extremely interesting and the characters, well except for a couple of them (you'll have to read it for yourself to understand that 😘) are incredibly relatable yet not as memorable in that "man I miss those fictional people" way.. although maybe I'm the only one who misses some of the characters I read about?! Lol
This story is AMAZING and I encourage you to give it a try for a surprising twist gaurenteed to stick in your mind and heart.
