To Protect the Protectorate…

Tristan Durant, once a refugee from Llael and now a priest and warcaster of the Protectorate of Menoth, struggles with his faith and his role. When a dark vision of the future warns of a rising threat to the theocracy, he returns with Hierarch Severius to the homeland for an epic confrontation against the godless enemy, the skorne. And when the Protectorate is thrown into turmoil by internal political machinations, Tristan Durant must choose a side to prevent the skorne from enslaving the faithful, and his choice will determine his fate—or have it determined for him.

Warning some minor spoilers

I'm glad to see that Privateer Press is advancing the storyline of the Iron Kingdoms. We had the changeover in the leadership of Cygnar and the death of King Vinter in another book and now, in this book, the death of Hierarch Severius and the potential for new leadership in the Protectorate.

This novel was mainly about the Menoth warcaster Tristan and his journey as a follower of the Menoth faith and his rise in the ranks of the Protectorate. There is some great character development with Tristan and his struggle with the politics of the Protectorate leadership, the rivalries within and the different interpretations of what it means to serve Menoth. The main weaknesses of this novel (in my opinion) is that I think more could have been developed with Tristan's personal conflict with his bodyguard Decimus and some of the battle scenes tended to drag out a little too much. I like the Skorne (background-wise) but there wasn't much to highlight their weapons, personnel and warbeasts (perhaps because this book was from the Protectorate's point of view) and they just seemed like background baddies to kill off.

A well told story in the Iron Kingdoms. Tristans moments of doubt are justified and the story feels true to the setting.

i felt drawn to Tristan as a protagonist and somehow even other normally disliked characters from the settings path were humanized and justified in their actions without taking away from previous appearances in the setting.

There were a few small editing mistakes in my copy but nothig major and nothing that broke the flow of the story for me. Normally with SIX their editing skills are a complete crapshoot. Im glad to see this story in particular cleared the bar :)
