★★★★ ½! Altered State (stand-alone). Just fasten your seat belts & take this trip into an Altered State of mind!

“Do you promise to never let anything or anyone come between us?”

Altered State (stand-alone) is an erotic thriller with a twist. It’s a tale of and how we cannot help who we fall in love with. It covers deceit, infidelity, betrayal and lies as a husband embarks on an erotic journey while his wife looks on.

Yet this story is not so much about cheating and infidelity, nor lying and deceiving, nor revenge and murder. Above all it’s a story of soul-searching passion and unending love.

A love that transcends time, compromises values, forgives the unforgivable, overlooks and bends the rules and makes you utterly reckless! Don’t judge, just fasten your seat belts and take this trip into an Altered State of mind.

Spectacular! Breath-taking! Mindfuck! An against-all-odds love!

“Just one last time, just one more taste, I promise myself as I give into his relentlessness.”

No? Then let Altered State be your first!

Let me preface my review with one MAJOR thing- do NOT read any reviews of this book unless you know it's spoiler-free. Got it? Because, hole-eee-smokes, there's horribly plot-spoilered reviews out there. Like, "Why bother to read the book now?" reviews. Seriously people, go in as blind as possible. My review is going to be vague as heck because, yes, this is one crazy ride! In fact, it doesn't feel crazy at all as you're reading along...other than the preface, which makes you KNOW the shizzle will eventually hit zee fan! It seems like any other book where there's "another woman." A marriage failing, the spark fizzling.

Altered State is one of those books that, on the surface, feels like just about all the other romances we read. Married couple. He's a lawyer. She works in a bridal salon. Things have gotten a bit blasé between them but nothing horrible. Commence the roller coaster ride...

When I'd saw the opportunity to read and review this, other than the blurb compelling me to sign up, I knew Ella Dominguez can write some seriously great books. I pretty much devoured her Art of D/s Series within days. Even more so, her artistic quality to her writing always created this mental picture with perfect clarity.

The full moon tugs at the waves making them crash loudly against the rocks, all the while shining brightly overhead and making the black water that ripples rhythmically below, take on a supernatural quality. The moon, the ocean… they smile knowingly, as if they’re inwardly laughing at me… as if they both know my secrets. I wish they would let me in on the joke.

Altered State has all the elements of a fantastic mindf*ck read. A compelling plot, making the reader feel like all is normal in her reading world, then weirdness slowly seeps in. I was thinking, "Ah ha, I know the twist. I've figured it out!" Just for me to figure out that no, Allison, you didn't have it figured out. It's got mysterious elements, obviously major suspense, a fairly decent dose of steam, and a love-story buried beneath the clusterf*ck of happenings.

Altered State is a book I'd highly recommend a buddy to read with. When the ride to Crazytown commences, a pal to bounce theories off of is a must. Or just someone to help you feel as if you're not losing your marbles as well. Deep breathe!

 photo 3B962815-2E39-4753-95F3-EEDDC2A15C6C_zpsp5ntez16.gif

The ending. Oh my gawd, the ending. It's one of those reads where all the pieces come together yet you're looking back to spots within the book to find all the elements that fit perfectly in the end. The husband Zeke, I absolutely loved him. Yes, Zeke, the cheater. Buried so deep within this complex plot, you will find one helluva love story.

I highly, highly recommend this for readers that crave mystery, intrigue, suspense, sexual fantasy within their reads. It had it all. I'd love to recommend this based on similar books I've read in the genre but even that will kind of give away plot spoilers. Go in blind. Take my word for it. You won't regret it.

This is a two hundred page quick exciting read that I found to be quit enjoyable. I did however guess the events to come early on in the story. However, the author had me guessing if I was right to the very last page.

The story is so much more than a husband cheating on his insecure wife with the obnoxious unapologetic mistress tale. There are a few twists and turns that will sure surprise readers. As for this author’s writing, except for the overdose of song titles scattered throughout the pages this was a good read that left me interested in seeing what other books she has released!

4 STARS! ★★★★

Wow what a crazy-ass book this was for sure! I had no intentions of reading this anytime soon but when you get a call from your blog partner who's freaking out over a plot twist, what kind of friend would I be if to not jump on the crazy train with her? :D Which btw, thanks Allison for pulling me into this hot messed up helluva mindfuck read on an absolute whim ♥

It's really tough to say anything much about the book without giving it away but depending how you like your reads to be, I'd say this book could go both ways for many readers. It's honestly one of those that starts out with you having multiple theories in your head and then when you think you're close to the truth, something else completely throws you off. But at some point, you may also be thinking that a suspension of disbelief is needed because it was just so bizarre when you figured it out.

Oh and there's some cheating which I thought worked fantastically in this read and really served its purpose to bring out a bigger message in the end.

I think what really worked for me is how fairly short this read was and yet it managed to pull off that mindfuckery element that still managed to stump me by the end of it. I even had to go back and re-read some scenes to make sense of them, seriously the author pretty much just muddled my brain after the ending.

Overall it's a great quick read if you're just seeking for a dosage of mindfuck mixed in with the right amounts of romance, suspense and steam ;)

This was my first read by this author and it certainly won’t be my last. I don’t know what I expected, but I know for sure I didn’t expect this read to be such a mindfuck. Even without the mindfuck aspect, the story would have been really entertaining. Anyway, my advice – don’t read any spoiler-ish reviews, because this is a book you have to experience for yourself.

“Altered State” was a captivating, fast-paced mystery/psychological thriller that not only it fucked up with my head, but also kept me at the edge of my seat. Despite the short length it has a solid, complex, plot that for sure for sure will leave you satisfied. Maybe for some readers the story would seem a little short, but IMO it has the perfect length. It wasn’t boring for one minute, it was intriguing and it has the perfect amount of mystery, steam, romance and even character development.

The characters were interesting, flawed and they even seemed real. All I can say is that I found them endearing (for the most part), layered and in some way also relatable. Zeke, the male character is a character you will love to hate, but don't judge him too harshly, because . This novel has to be the only book with cheating that I truly enjoyed. After you’ll read it will understand why.

There’s many twists and turns that will make you question everything, and that will surprise you. I’m sure like me, you will have all kind of theories and also I’m pretty sure you'll never guess what’s really going on. Don’t worry, in the end every question will be answered.

Overall this was a fantastic read and if you’re looking for a mind blowing read, I really recommend it!

I enjoyed this one.
However with my keen mindfuck reading skills, I knew what was happening which kind of put a damper on it. Even though the author did a fantastic job of trying to prove me wrong, I still wasn't falling for it. :)

This still kept me flipping pages like a maniac, and was an awesome story. Would recommend this twisted tale.

4* what is reality? STARS!!

This was my first read from Ella Dominguez. I usually judge book from its cover but now I have to swallow my own words LOL. I was searching for something new dark and twisted story and I remember about this book. BAM! This is gonna be short review and my advice is go blind.

Altered State is a story between Miranda who works at bridal shop and married Zeke; a handsome lawyer. Something's wrong with their marriage. It was intimacy and romance. Her husband is distancing himself and Miranda’s self-doubt and distrust would threaten their one year marriage. Zeke confused about his marriage with Miranda and then comes Shelby. She came out of nowhere and Zeke agreed with no string attached with this Shelby. She becamse his mistress and it's only for sex including Zeke’s fantasy and fetishes. But, Zeke always come back to Miranda and make sure that he loves her no matter what. She’s always the one.

A Cheating husband, conventional wife and homewrecker stranger? Like a soap drama. But nope. I mentally take notes about what's happening but in the end, everything isn't what I've expected. Altered State contains 200 pages that's enough to mind-fuck your brain. Their sex scenes was quite steamy but not really detailed for my liking. I couldn't put this down! And the ending... GAH!!! Are u kiddin’ me?

5 Erotic and Mysterious Stars

I would classify this book as an erotic psychological mystery. This book is very difficult to review without revealing major spoilers.

I thought I knew what was going to happen in this book but I was wrong and also right on some instances. I just had the wrong cheater and cheated or so to speak?
One of the reasons I gave this book 5 stars is the way in which the author writes the erotic scenes. There was nothing harsh, cheesy, silly or weird about them. I was able to feel a connection and the emotions between the characters. I find all too often this isn't the case.

description

“his possessive hands controlling my movements... his kiss igniting a flame that spreads through my body like wildfire… the urgency in his voice whispering his longings and desire for me as his mouth devours me... his undivided attention and yearning to get to know me: all rewards. Falling for him: the biggest risk of them all, yet inescapable.”

The book was very enjoyable and engaging. I loved the author's writing and all the twists and turns throughout the book kept me guessing until the end. The story was realistic and emotional. Would I read other books by this author and recommend this one? Absolutely!!

Beauty lies in the truth

This is a psychological thriller that had me on edge and guessing the whole time. So many twist and turns so when I thought I figured it out, I was thrown in a complete other direction to come back again. As the true story unfolds, I am so stunned! But I do like the way things end and can see everything being sorted out, with even an HEA.

If you are a fan of angst, twists, and psychological thriller then Altered State by Ella Dominguez might be the book for you. This book was all about the mind games but however I did find myself in the beginning suspecting the surprising twist in the book. With that being said, overall I think this was an enjoyable read to get lost in as insecure wife deals with her marital issues.

UPDATE: The wait is over... Altered State is here

Ella Dominguez's Altered State RDL Banner

Buckle up buttercups because Ella Dominguez is taking you on a wild ride of suspense and who's who. As the author eloquently says, "no lie lasts forever" you will see just what that statement truly means.

Ella Dominguez wrote characters that I cared for, even Shelby . From the preface, I knew this story was going to be interesting and by chapter 13, I think I began to hyperventilate. All I'm saying is, if looks could kill:
description

The love triangle in this book is insane, had my heart beating fast, all while thinking what the hell. The alternating POVs between Miranda and Shelby on situations within scenes adds perspective and intrigue. Zeke, the man in the middle of two woman confused me a lot of the time but the last three chapters are from Zeke (husband) POV and reveal his mindset during the course of relationship with each woman, shedding light (maybe understanding) on his actions.

During the murder scene I thought I had everything and everyone figured out but come to find out I didn't. Altered State is a page turning suspense thriller laced with mystery and steamy sex scenes. No one and nothing is what it seems and all I kept thinking was:
description.

Altered State is my favorite Ella Dominguez book thus far . The characters definitely had an altered state of mind. If you’re into psychological reads that are not what they seem I recommend giving this a try. This attention grabbing book gets 4.5 stars upgraded to 5 for Zeke: his state of mind, how he handled the situation, and the love for his familia.

My final thoughts for the book and Ella Dominguez:

A full-time mom and healthcare worker, Ella was born and raised in a sexually repressed, strict Christian household in the bible belt of the USA. This upbringing and repression contributed to her wicked imagination and writing has been her only outlet for her sexual fantasies. Finally at the ripe and sexually primed age of forty, she mustered up enough courage to share her naughty thoughts and put pen to paper. I sincerely hope to find her niche in writing erotica in all forms, be it romance or paranormal.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love a good mindfuck book. LOVE THEM. Bang by E.K. Blair was one of my favorites, but this book took that fucking to a whole new level.

When I read Altered State, I was not, by any means, expecting to be tossed around like a rag doll in a playful puppy’s mouth. I was not expecting to have a ridiculous theory about how it would play out, only to have said ridiculousness sort of come true but in reverse, out of the outfield, to hit me in the face in the batter’s box.

I don’t want to say anything about the book because I don’t want to give anything away, but I will tell you that the characters were awesome. Zeke, the male lead, is dominant, hot and WOW. I kind of hated him for a bit, but I would definitely love to see him or another character like him in more books! There were a couple of times I was confused as to what had caused something else, but all my questions and confusions were cleared up at the end.

Did I like this book? Is the sky blue? Do kids make messes? All really silly questions. I LOVED this book, and I cannot wait to read more by Ella Dominguez and see what other twisted things she can do to me! ~ Devlynn, 5 stars

I was a BETA reader for this and it's taken me a full week to wrap my head around this story so that I can write a review without spoilers...so I've decided to just tell you how I feel about it without mentioning characters or anything "about" the story...lol...

OMG! No, seriously...OMG!!!

Reading AS has officially set a new bar for mind f*** authors in my book. Just when you think you've figured out where the story is going, BAM, Ella completely b*tch slaps you with something I can only categorize as a, "wait, what" moment.

There is no way to describe the feeling you will be left with when you finish this book. Just be prepared to pick your jaw up from the floor.

A twisted and wild ride that keeps you guessing all the way to the end! Full of characters whose behavior you question at every turn. Hot sex, which is a given for any Ella Dominguez book. Twists and turns that have you puzzling over what is what and who is who. An enjoyable read with suspense, mind games, and down and dirty sex. It gets a recommendation from me!

My review comes from a unique perspective because I had to pleasure of working with Ella on this particular project as her Editor. From the very first draft of the very first chapter I read, I knew she had something special here. To be fair, I'm a longtime fan of Ella's, and I was honored when she asked me to work with her on the editing for Altered State. I could not have prepared myself for the ride she was going to take us on. And I don't think that you will be disappointed either.

At the very beginning, I fell in love with Miranda. She was sweet, a bit insecure, young and in love. She seemed to be in that very fresh place as a newlywed, newly in love and their life was just beginning, that we grow to miss over the years. She was looking forward to a pleasant first anniversary with her new husband when things took a turn, and so begins our rollercoaster ride.

Zeke, at first, seemed charming, and everything a young wife would want: young, handsome, successful, attentive, passionate, and head-over-heels in love with his wife. But then temptation walked in the door, and I wanted to hate him for hurting sweet Miranda.

And his temptress? She is a piece of work! She makes a snarky bitch look like sunshine-on-a-stick, but damn she knows how to work a man into a lather! And Lordy, she is HOT!

And the ride? Holy smokes! Y'all better buckle up! This had me on the edge of my seat, even as I worked, I found myself reading ahead and going back to re-read again. What did she just say?! What did they just do?! I was in turmoil! TURMOIL! I felt like the friend who knew something about the friend's boyfriend or knew some other big secret, and I couldn't decide whether to tell or keep quiet! I was so uncomfortable, and I could not put it down!

Then, the big BANG!? HOLY MOSES IN THE DESERT! HOT! I can't say I wasn't prepared for what was coming... BUT I WASN'T PREPARED! There is no protecting your heart from the outcome of this story. It will claw at your insides, scrape them up and hand them back, and leave you aching and confused. And then you'll wish you could pick it up and experience it all again, I promise. I hope you all enjoy this ride as much as I did. I feel blessed to have been a part of it. Thank you, Ella, for this gift. <3 ~Kristen, Sin Sisters Books, Editor

I was first introduced to Ella's writing through Grace Street. When I started that book I had no idea that I would love erotic psychological thrillers. I didn't think I had a deep connection to dark reads. I figured I was always on the quest for the happily ever after one tends to read in romance. After reading Grace Street, I realized I needed more thrillers. I needed to read stories that weren't so neatly wrapped in a beautiful package. I craved the stories where my mind would be hijacked for hours, days, and months thinking about the characters and what could have been done differently. If they'll ever get their happily ever after. And I've been waiting for another Ella Dominguez novel to give me more dark circumstances and characters who leave an indelible impression on me. She has done that with Altered State.

There is no possible way I can describe the story. I can't leave it to chance that I will spoil something so brilliantly crafted. Each word forming a lyric like the music she chooses for the reader to understand the depth of her story's symphony. When I had to put down Altered State, it wasn't because I didn't want to read it. It was my mind giving my heart time to settle or strengthen to go deep into the characters. Ella crafts the characters as if you're reading their diaries or you've somehow tapped into their souls and can now interpret the vibrations of their thoughts and feelings. The imagery was intense, making me both want to live there or run as far away as possible.

When I go to bed thinking about what I just read and waking up in the middle of the night wondering how they're doing, you know you're gripped beyond measure. I had to remind myself that all is okay. Ella Dominguez will grace us in the future with another brilliant read. I may not be able to read another book for a few days, but I'm okay with that because I read enough brilliance in Altered State to satiate me for days.

Get your copy. Promote it to your friends. You will love this book as much as her other reads.

No regrets: a great idea in theory, not so much in real life. There are always regrets. Even when the offending parties deserve what's coming to them, and most especially for the ones who don't.

Miranda Delacruz, wife to enigmatic Zeke Delacruz, but who is she ? Miranda is the central character in the story and we as the reader spend the most time in her head as she muses over her marriage: which is falling apart. Coming from a past she has repressed Miranda never fully has a true sense of self and we become engulfed in her whirlwind.

When Miranda suspects Zeke of cheating the last few threads holding her together start popping at the seams and the result? You'll have to read to find out.

Wow... this was my first read by the author and I was blown away! This book was pure genius! I could see this as the next Gone Girl- it had the edginess and suspense throughout the entire story. I'm not sure how to describe the writing but it hooked me from page one. Every word seemed perfectly placed and the story flowed consistently picking up steam as the revelations came. I was sure I had the twist predicted in the first 25% but nope- there were still twists and complete surprises to me! I would definitely classify this read as a mindf*ck. Because the narrator, Miranda, definitely got into my mind and f*cked sh*t up!

I would highly recommend this book and believe many different readers would love- if you love suspense, mystery, erotica, crime- or any combination I urge you to pick this up, you will not be disappointed!

First 5 stars of 2016! Cheers!

The wife, the husband and the mistress, the usual trope ... or maybe not.
A husband who loves his wife unconditionally, yet wants the best of both worlds
A wife who will do whatever it takes to save her marriage, but feels her husband wants her to be someone else.

This story will play with your emotions. An intriguing mindfuck starting from page 1. When you think you have it figured out, the author throws a new element and the ride is not over.
I recommend to go in blind, so I can not reveal much about the plot. What I can tell is that it is not a story about deceit or lies, but rather about the passionate love of a man for his wife and about the consequences of a terrible trauma.

Altered State is the kind of story that is right up my alley . It was not overly dark, although all elements were there for a very dark story based on past events. If those events had been developped by the author, it would probably have been a 5 stars read for me.
Finally, the ending was satisfying but I would have enjoyed an epilogue.

WOW... I mean... WOW... I've been extremely honored to be able to read this before its release date and I'm blown away!

I'm sat here speechless at what I've just read! This is one helluva 5 star read and I urge you all to pick it up and give it a chance!

I started stalking Ella after reading Becoming Sir, which blew me away for different reasons. When asked to read Altered State, I jumped at the chance and am glad I did. From the outset you're thrust into a who done it scenario and no matter what I said Ella wouldn't give away the ending.

There is one hell of a plot twist or two in this story and I know my jaw hit the deck come the end. My emotions went up and down with the main characters throughout this read and come the end my heart is slightly broken in a good way at the revelations.

Simply stunningly written and worded - Ella you're a master at your craft!

•STORY: 5 stars
•FEMALE NARRATOR REBECCA ROBERT'S PERFORMANCE: 5 stars
•MALE NARRATOR MATEO REATE'S PERFORMANCE: 1 star
•OVERALL: 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4)

I received a free Audible audiobook in exchange for my review.

STORY:
Ella Dominguez hit a home run with Altered State! This exciting, suspenseful, sizzling hot erotic romance had me on my toes, guessing at what was going on from page 1! This truly is a story unlike anything I've ever read which impressed the hell out of me since I read a LOT of books! Not only was the plot unexpected, it was well written. Because of Ms. Dominguez's remarkable character development, I felt like I, "met" some new people. At times I'd forget that I was reading a fictional book, the characters becoming companions who were sharing their personal stories with me.

Not only did Dominguez hit a home run with Altered State but she also proved that she's capable of throwing some incredible curveballs! Early in the book I thought I knew what was happening, certain that this book was going to be predictable but I was so wrong! The twists in this book are mind blowing and come when you least expect them! Altered State is a great mindfuck that readers of all genres will enjoy! With mystery, romance, secrets, suspense, passion, crime, obsession, lies, love, heartbreak and more, there really is something for everyone in this book!

REBECCA ROBERTS' PERFORMANCE:

99% of the male character dialogue was narrated by Mateo Reate while the remainder and majority of this audiobook was narrated by Rebecca Roberts. Ms. Roberts' performance was great, making it clear that this was not her first time recording an audiobook. Throughout the recording, she was able to produce just the right amounts of emotion, pause for just the right amounts of time and kept her tone of voice and volume at just the right levels. Because she was able to create two distinct voices, Ms. Roberts made it easy for listeners to decipher between the two female main characters. Ms. Roberts is a talented narrator capable of bringing the characters and the story to life! She's fun to listen to and she makes narrating seem like a piece of cake!

MATEO REATE'S PERFORMANCE:
It took me over 90 minutes to write this review, attempting to use the least hurtful, derogatory words possible while still being 100% honest about Mateo Reate's performance. Despite the time and energy spent, the truth is that I've never heard a performance worse than Reate's (& I've listened to 40 approximately audiobooks during the past 5 years).

Prior to hearing Mr. Reate's voice, I unknowingly had become immersed in the story, lulled by Rebecca Roberts' voice. Unexpectedly and suddenly, Reate's much louder, much deeper, extremely jarring voice, "boomed" in, literally startling me so much that I physically jumped! Never have I experienced anything like that! Even after listening to several chapters, Mr. Reate's voice continued to startle me. Just when I'd become consumed by what I was listening to, Reate's painfully loud, monotone words would disrupt the flow of the story, reminding me that I wasn't actually watching a movie play out in my mind but was listening to an audiobook. His excessively deep and loud voice was intrusive and overpowering, especially when coupled with or compared to Rebecca Roberts' softer, more believable voice. In addition, Mr. Reate always sounded like he had excessive amounts of mucus or drool in his mouth, his accent sounded fake and his tone was flat with zero emotion during the first 95% of the recording. Initially, I wasn't sure I'd be able to continue listening to the audiobook, forcing myself to keep listening. At one point, I was so baffled by Reate's voice that I played a few seconds to my husband who commented, "what do you expect from a computerized text to speech app?" When I informed him that what he'd just heard was a professional, paid narrator, he didn't believe me!

Thankfully, by chapter 9 I had acclimated and wasn't physically startled by his voice anymore. By the time I reached the very end of the book, Mateo began showing signs that he could add small amounts of emotion to his voice. Unfortunately, also at the end, there were some audio issues. In the very last chapter I could hear when Mateo's recordings stopped and new recordings began. This wasn't a huge issue but it's something Mr. Reate will hopefully be able to improve upon should he continue recording audiobooks. I would also highly recommend that he take some acting classes and voice coaching if such a thing exists.

Hopefully, Ella. Dominguez will write an epilogue or additional stories about Zeke and Miranda but if she does, and she has Mr. Reate narrate again, I will bypass the audiobook and choose e-book format for sure.

Overall rating: 4.0

This audiobook was provided by the narrator Rebecca Roberts in exchange for an honest review.

The Story:

"It's beauty that captures your attention; personality which captures your heart." ~ Oscar Wilde"

This book is about infidleity, but it's not. It's about lying and cheating, murder and mayham, but it's not. What it is about is love and hope, and soulmates.

I loved this story! Lots of delicious twists! What I loved most, is I didn't see them coming! It was one of those major twists that made me stop and go, "Wait. What?" I had to pause, and go back, so to see if I just heard was really what I heard! This book is an erotic thriller with a punch to the gut, and the, heart that will leave the reader (or listener) reeling.

Miranda Delacruz is the wife of Zeke Delacruz, a man she loves and tries very hard to please, and at times even fears. She tries to be perfect for him when she doesn't feel perfect at all and because of this, her marriage is falling apart. Worst of all, she suspects that Zeke is cheating on her.

Could I tell you more than that? Sure. Will I? Hell no! This is one fantastic, roller coaster of a mindfuck that you'll have to read yourself.

Narration

Rebecca Roberts' Performance:

Ms. Roberts' narration was smooth and easy on the ears. I loved how she was able to differentiate the different female characters. I always knew which character was speaking. She slipped between characters easily.

Her voice made me *want* to listen, to invest in the audio format of this story.

Mateo Reaté's Performance:

I've never listened to duel narration done quite like this. Usually, if it's a chapter that is from the female's POV, then it's read by the female narrator, and them same for the male.

Mr. Reaté's reading was very monotone. It was hard to listen to him and come to terms with it being Zeke. Mr. Reaté's voice was disruptive at best. The story would be going along smoothly then all of the sudden there would be a male voice saying (for example) 4 words. There was no inflection in his voice. Zero. The accent wasn't believable. It sounded forced, and not at all like one would imagine Zeke sounding.

I think Mr. Reaté would have better served if perhaps he'd read the story first in order to get a handle on Zeke's character. I felt like he didn't connect with Zeke's character, and if he didn't, that made it hard for me to, (in the audio version, that is. )

Towards the end of the book, when we hear longer passages from Mr. Reaté, it was a bit easier to listen to.

Because of Mr. Reaté, I ended up, for the most part, reading the story on my Kindle, along with the audio.

This book would have been better narrated by one narrator.

Final thoughts:

The story was great, it was solid and I really enjoyed it. So it stood on it's own, regardless of the narration by Mr. Reaté.

I do believe that Mr. Reaté could be a good narrator with the right book, and spoken in his own accent. I would encourage him to take this, and/or other critiques, and use it to help improve something that he obviously enjoys.

I would listen to other audiobooks by Ms. Roberts. She had the perfect energy to bring Ms. Dominguez's book to life!

OVERALL: ★★★★

A complicated love triangle leaves two women desperately grasping at the love that only one man can provide. It’s a story about love; finding it, holding onto it, and the extremes a person would go for it.

Going into this read I thought it would be a fairly straightforward plot, where I only had to assign the labels ‘murderer’, ‘liar’, and ‘cheater’ to the right characters. While this is true in a sense, it was definitely more convoluted than I thought it would be. Even if readers do see it all coming from a mile away, one can still appreciate the storytelling.

Unfortunately, I didn’t appreciate the characters so much, well not on first or second impressions anyway. Miranda, loyal and seemingly softly spoken, was whiny and irritating. Shelby, I found pleasantly unapologetic and crass, but was also manipulative and selfish. Zeke, neurotic and narcissistic, and I really just wanted to castrate and use his balls to play croquet. As the story progresses, it was like the world went topsy-turvy and Miranda became manipulative, Shelby loyal, and Zeke the most stable and selfless (I was in love with the guy by the end). Interesting and complex characters indeed!

Suffice it to say, nothing is as it seems. What I thought was your usual romance filled with adultery, jealousy, and revenge, was much, much more. This page-turner definitely kept on my toes; I couldn’t predict where the story was going to go. Zeke’s POV in the last couple of chapters was well done, adding value rather than becoming redundant.

The delivery was both a success and not. Rebecca Roberts did a superb job in the transition of characters, and her intonation was appropriately expressive. Mateo Reaté, on the other hand, was monotone, and as a consequence may pull the reader out of the story. Upside is, this does improve towards then end, and if you’re into accents it’s another bonus. Oh, did I mention there’s a little hiccup in chapter 16 when Zeke’s voice is miraculously female? Given these audio issues, it didn’t bother me too much since I’m used to my Kindle’s text-to-speech function but I can see how a lot of people may want to opt for a reading experience rather than an audio one.

All in all, I enjoyed this. Would I recommend it? Yes, if romantic suspense is your thing and if you think the audio issues will piss you off, pick up the ebook copy.

This is one of those books that is easy to spoil while you're reviewing it. So I will say as little as possible.

This author wrote really well which is why my emotions were all entangled for 80% of this book.

The end was a mindf**k. my head was swimming with possibilities coming down to the wire.... Thankfully the very end left a smile on my face.

This book reminded me strongly of another book which i cannot mention without spoiling both books. If you read both, you would know what I'm talking about.

4 stars from me... 4.2 maybe. Because i suffered from my initial opinions of Zeke... and read a similar story before... i cannot give 5 stars.

Another deliciously devious tale from wicked, twisted mind of Ella Dominiguez! I had the pleasure of beta reading Altered State and I've gotta admit that at the 50% mark, I was completely torn about continuing...but the blurb had me intrigued and the preface had pulled me in, so I was in it for the long haul. This book will make you run the gamut of emotions throughout; it's full of cheaters, decite, wicked sex, and twists and turns that you'll never see coming. The last half of the book unravels quickly and the ending was phenomenal...dare I say: Ella's best work to date!!
