Lindsey & Ike #2
Turtle Tribbles
In Book 2 of the Lindsey & Ike Novella Series, newspaper editor Lindsey McKay must decide if she’s ready to take the next step with her boyfriend, Sheriff Ike Harper. He’s anxious for her to move in, but she worries something is missing. Meanwhile, the Turtle Girl, a college intern named Selma Crowley, begs Lindsey to cover her turtle story. Someone is stealing federally protected loggerhead turtle eggs off a Georgia barrier island, and it has to stop. The earnest young woman convinces Lindsey of the story’s potential, and the next day Lindsey ferries to the island to see the nests and take photos. Selma promises she’ll have tangible evidence of the theft on Friday, but the revelation doesn’t occur. Worse, Selma’s missing, and no one’s seen her since Wednesday evening. Because she demanded proof from Selma for the newspaper story, Lindsey blames herself for the intern’s disappearance. When Selma’s body is discovered, Lindsey vows to get justice for Selma and her turtles. Selma’s tribbles are over, but the tribbles are just beginning for Lindsey and her trusty sidekick, Labrador retriever Bailey.

Turtle Tribbles by Maggie Toussaint is a cozy mystery that is part of an anthology called Happy Homicides 3: Summertime Crimes. Lindsey is a newspaper editor who is requested to investigate the poaching of turtle eggs. Selma is a college intern who had discovered the turtle nest being poached and the eggs stolen. Lindsey agrees to investigate and help publicize this crime. However, when Selma's body is discovered, the investigation enters a new and dangerous scenario.
I enjoyed reading this story. It has suspense, romance and danger. I received a copy of this book from one of the anthology authors and I am sorry I waited so long to start reading it. The other stories in the anthology are not separate stories like this one, but they all seem wonderful and interesting. If you can find a copy of the anthology or this book, I highly recommend it.

I liked the first book of this series better than this one because the characters seemed to be more real, and the energy between them was better. This time around I am disgusted with Ike's lack of commitment and his telling Lindsey what to do. Lindsey started out digging in as a journalist on the mystery at hand, and by the end of the book I felt she had forgotten about the paper completely. Very disappointing.
I did think the mystery was good and the information about the turtles was fascinating. The surprise twist about the research facility and island was a bonus. That part was well written and kept me from giving this a lower rating.
