I am so delighted to be kicking off the North American blog tour for the new Jake Boulder series! I have seen rave reviews for the author’s previous books, so I was really pleased to be asked to participate in promoting a new series from scratch while dipping my toes in his writing style. I completely see where all the praise is coming from; Smith has a way with capturing your attention and not letting go until that final page is turned. While I hear that Boulder is completely different than his Harry series, I’m positive the finely crafted voice is heard in both.

I was immediately drawn to Jake’s character; while he is very different than Evan Smoak, I did get that same vibe of the dark, mysterious, and slightly stand-offish loner who exudes a quiet power to everyone he comes in contact with. This was a typical case of “the local police has their head up their rear end and can’t manage without outside help’; while this angle has been played many times before it was still a necessary premise to shape the forefront of our journey. I also felt it was very ballsy of Smith to write a book set in the United States while being British; I haven’t seen many people able to pull off a setting in an unfamiliar place and sell it so well.

The thing that impressed me most was how the story went about one of it’s big reveals; I was completely in awe at the AHA moment when one of the big points was unveiled and literally gasped out loud. This was a clever, well written thriller that introduced a new lead character that I’m interested to see more of. If you enjoy thrillers that have a structured feel and feature serial killers, you’ll want to pick up Watching the Bodies immediately. The plot is dark and disturbing with tension that grows throughout the story. Fantastic debut to a new series that I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of in the near future!

*Many thanks to the publisher for providing my copy!

Great Story

This book was recommended to me, and I am very pleased that they did. Although it does mean I have yet another new author and another series to add to my ever growing TBR.
I loved the character, Jake Boulder. There was significant development of his character during the course of the book, but I suspect that there is still more to come during future stories.
The plot is paced perfectly, with just enough red herrings. I was wrong with my prediction of who the killer was by the way!

I am a huge fan of the authors Harry Evans series so was really excited to see that the author was bringing out a brand new crime series. Loving Harry though I was worried to how much I would take to Jake. The author couldn’t have made both series’ anymore different though so poor Harry Evans didn’t even enter my mind whilst reading this book.

Jake Boulder is the strong and broody type. He came across to me as a bit of a loner. He is happy with his own company, only letting someone in when it suits him.

The story is set in a small town where the local police force probably wouldn’t be the first on the list that you would want investigating your murder! Step in Boulder who has personal reasons in wanting the killer caught.

I loved the way that the killer chooses his victims. It’s a pretty jaw dropping moment when along with Jake we realise how they are doing it. No way did I see that coming!

Watching The Bodies being set in Utah and written by a British author is probably a bit of a risk on the authors part but one that a hundred percent has paid off. He has really done his homework with americanisms and I totally believed everything that I was reading and didn’t have to question anything.

This is a dark and suspenseful read that just drew me in and placed me slap bang in the thick of things. With a thrilling serial killer and a smouldering Boulder, there is definitely something for everyone who loves a good crime thriller. Great start to a new series and already counting down the days for book two.

I’ve read a couple of Graham’s books before, so I thought I knew what to expect when I started reading Watching The Bodies. I was wrong! Firstly, WTB is set in the USA so extra points from me as I love a good thriller from across the Atlantic! Secondly, the author has introduced us to Jake Boulder. I love a good macho/manly character, the Jack Reachers, the John Miltons of the world, and now, Jake Boulder is definitely another one for me to follow.

Boulder is tasked with investigating the death of Kira Niemeyer alongside the Police Dept and what he discovers, nobody was prepared for. There is a serial killer at work, and they have some seriously twisted methods of killing up their sleeve. It is literally a pick’n’mix as to how the killer selects the method, as they are selected from a jar filled with ways to kill. However, the victim selection is far more unusual. I’ll leave you guys to read that for yourself. Tis a good ‘un though!

I read Watching The Bodies really quickly. It’s the kind of book that you don’t want to put down as each turn of the page makes the reader say “one more page and I’ll stop”, and for me especially, I end up devouring the book super-fast! WTB was no different!

A belter of a start to a series. High stakes cat and mouse games with a twisted killer and a really likeable protagonist. Definitely one to add to your TBR if you enjoy fast-paced action with plenty of twists and turns!

Highly recommended!

Just unbelievably bad. Everything is ham handed and one dimensional, with zero character development, a rushed plot, and an oddly abrupt ending. It’s like a bad YouTube parody from a guy who watched Jason Bourne and thought he could do better

PI Alfonse Devereaux enlists his best friend, Jake Boulder, to help him investigate the murder of Kira Niemeyer. He has been hired by Kira's father who distrusts the local police's competency. When more bodies turn up they realise there is a serial killer on the loose but how he is choosing his victims and why is a bit of a mystery.

There is a good plot and several interesting twists in the novel but it didn't hold my attention and I didn't find it a great read as the execution lets it down. It is told in the first person by Jake Boulder and I didn't find him an appealing or particularly well developed character. He comes from the hit first, think later school although, according to him, he never starts it. Whatever. And yet the reader is supposed to believe that he is the only person in the small town of Casperson, Utah who can develop leads on a serial killer. The novel switches its narrative point of view between Jake and the killer, identified as The Watcher. I found his thought processes and motivation underwhelming and not nearly as chilling as they could be. I also think that Mr Smith has his priorities wrong in the novel as there is very little about the actual murders and it's as if they are only there to illustrate Jake and The Watcher's thoughts and as these are both quite woolly the novel doesn't have much impact.

As a straightforward adventure which doesn't require much thought Watching the Bodies is adequate but for a reader who wants something deeper this is not the book for them.

**Four and a half stars out of five**
Make sure you check out all of my reviews on damppebbles.com.

Graham Smith is best known for his DI Harry Evans series set in Cumbria. I have read a novella and the latest book in the series, I Know Your Secret featuring DI Evans. Both of which I enjoyed so I was excited to make a start on this brand new series featuring expat Scot, Jake Boulder.

The first thing I should say is that this new series is nothing like Smith's DI Evans series. I'm a huge fan of the 'damaged detective' (that includes Evans) and I love my police procedurals but this was something else altogether. Something great. Something refreshing and different.

I was expecting the story to be set close to home so was pleasantly surprised to find myself in Utah. I have a bit of a penchant for crime stories set in America so this immediately appealed to me. From then on things just got better and better. This is a cracking serial killer thriller which doesn't shy away from blood, guts and gore. I absolutely loved the serial killer's method of choosing his next victim along with his way of deciding how they were going to die. As an avid crime reader it does sometimes get a little tiresome reading about the killer's same, repetitive MO again and again. You don't get this with Watching the Bodies. Each victim is disposed of in a different and unique way which I (because I'm a little strange) found fascinating. I also like my serial killers to reach double figures in the victim count.

Jake Boulder is a very intriguing character and I want to read more. He could be one of those aloof, very masculine characters who steals a few reader's hearts but I, for one, am undecided at the moment. Don't get me wrong. I really liked him. I'm just not sure that I fell for his charms as some other readers may do. Employed at one of the local bars as the doorman he's a fighter who hasn't forgotten his Scottish roots, despite living in the US for many years. I loved that he's still close and heavily influenced by his mother and her maternal concerns. That relationship gave the story several lighter, more humorous moments which were appreciated. I also loved the relationship between Boulder and Alfonse. Alfonse is the owner of a PI company and Boulder's best buddy. He's also the reason Boulder gets into the trouble he does. Alfonse is a geek, a computer genius so his pairing with tough nut, Boulder seemed unlikely but it totally works. I could read about these two all day long.

Would I recommend this book? Most definitely. It's one of the best serial killer thrillers I have read in a LONG time. I couldn't stop turning the pages and devoured the book in two short days. If this is what Graham Smith has in store for us with this new series then consider me hooked. I can't wait to read more!

Four and a half stars out of five.

I chose to read and review an eARC of Watching the Bodies. The above review is my own unbiased opinion.

Happy Publication Day, Graham Smith!!
The excitement I feel at this very moment in time is absolutely unexplainable! I have been a massive fan of Graham Smith right from the very start, the #LeaderOfHisCheer, so when I got my hands on this badboy...OMFG...I could not wait for it to be published! If I am feeling this way, I can only imagine how the author feels - but Mr Smith, I don't think you have anything to worry about as this is one superb, kick-ass series that I think will go from strength to strength!

Set in Casperton, Utah this book is filled with such things as fear, loss, regret, revenge, abandonment, a power over others - the hunter and the hunted. Eeeeek! The pages were dripping with this almost eery, paranoia feel - the constant fear of having to look over your shoulder, hoping and praying that you don't stumble across something you shouldn't and wondering which of the characters could be next! LOVED it!!

This was a fast paced plot with punch-in-the-gut action around every corner. We know, in a sense, from the start who the killer is and we look through his eyes at the victims he litters across Casperton. The reader is left gasping...yes GASPING for breath as they turn each page - who is The Watcher's next victim? Why is he doing this? Needless to say, the #Killerhook lured me in and drove me through this book at a pace that left my mind reeling! What a bloody rush!

Hang on tight peeps, as now I am going to talk about the characters - something Mr Smith has mastered in my honest opinion! And who better to start with than my #FictionalBoyfriend - oh yes....Jake Boulder! *Swoon*. This guy is DELICIOUS! Finally unleashed into the fictional world, Jake Boulder is a bouncer/doorman in a bar called The Joshua Tree and from the get go, you know that he can handle himself. The ultimate #badboy with a likeable cockiness that immediately draws you to him. Intelligent, fit, ready for action - god this guy is #Boulderlicious! What I loved about him is that fact that he is loyal, introspective, oozes courage under pressure and is determined. I could go on....but I may forget I am writing a review!

Alfonse is another character that drew me in. He is effectively Boulder's BFF- having known him for years. Alfonse is the brains while Boulder is the brawn (though Boulder is no dummy!). As a private investigator, Alfonse uses his IT/skills to assist Boulder in the hunt for The Watcher. I love the banter between Boulder and Alfonse - their friendship is clear from the start. And in tough times, you just KNOW that Alfonse has got his back. Adore him!

Ms Rosenberg- This lady rocks!! There is definitely more to this woman than meets the eye. She is bold, brash and will do what it takes to expose a story! Persistent, confident and totally in your face - Ms Rosenberg says it how she sees it and I absolutely thought she was fantastic!

Chief Watson, Dr Edwards and Boulder's mother are also characters that got under my skin - each for different reasons but all positive! Chief Watson knows his team of police are...well...probably not the brightest bunch. Recognising Boulder's skills, a mutual respect exists between this pair and I can see a firm friendship in the making. Dr Edwards is brilliant! I totally love him and could spend hours reading chapters where he psychoanalyses people. Quid pro quo - He is clever but not an arse and really helps to show the reader a different side to Boulder. One where the total tough guy image is stripped back and we learn more about who Boulder is whilst also seeing how the case progresses. I could go on about this character, but where is the fun in that! Read about him yourself when you buy this book..... #JustSaying - Finally, Boulder's mother. What a character she is! I love the dynamics between her and Boulder. She is so narcissitic but Boulder really loves her and despite her overbearing ways- she utterly loves him too. Awwww....

The last character I am going to talk about (promise...though there are so many more!) is The Watcher. WTAF is going on with this guy!? He has strict guidelines in terms of his MO and he will not stray from these. He is focussed on the end result and seems to relish the destruction he is reaping on others. Calculating, cunning and totally conniving- you just had better hope you are not his next victim! Friggin loved it!!!

Damn! My review has turned into a novella, so I will just say this! If you are looking for a high octane, action packed, crime thriller that will leave you begging...yes BEGGING for more - then look no further! A massive HELL FRIGGIN YEAH recommendation from me...click the book below and join #TeamBoulder!! *High Five* Mr Smith, you have totally nailed this! #BOOM! Another #TopRead2017

How do you stop an evil sadistic killer with nothing to lose? That is the challenge that Jake Boulder finds himself with when his friend, Kira, is found dead and her father wants answers he doubts the local police force will be able to find.

Jake is a PI and completely out of his depth investigating a murder with only his partner, Alfonse, to help him. When the 2nd body is found and there are no links the police, reluctantly, agree to share information in the hope that between them they can find the answers needed to identify the killer.

I personally love Jake's character he has a strange relationship with his mother who is portrayed as a Matriarch that everyone fears and is disappointed in Jake's reluctance to settle down and provide her with grandchildren. He is a commitment phobe and shies away from any sort of long term relationship. He is left flummoxed by information that is revealed by investigating Kira's past. As the killer escalates Jake and the police join forces and helped by Alfonse's excellent IT skills manage to keep one step behind the killer.

The story is told from Jake and the Killer's point of view which makes for an excellently gripping read made all the more adrenaline pumping by the strange plan that the killer is working too.

My only disappointment is that I felt the last chapter was a little rushed and I would have liked a more robust ending as I felt it didn’t really end. However, this is book one who knows what book 2 will bring.

Well worth the 5 stars.

A big thank you to Bloodhound Books who provided me with an advance copy of this book.

Watching the Bodies has been sitting on my Kindle collecting dust since publication day and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to finally get around to reading it! This is the first book I’ve read by Graham Smith and I can already tell you that it won’t be my last.

Let’s start with our protagonist. Jake Boulder isn’t a police officer or detective. He’s just a guy who works in a bar called The Joshua Tree. He has commitment issues, a narcissistic mother and a temper that boils right underneath the surface, ready to ignite before you get the chance to say “Oh, Jake, take me away!”. He’s intelligent, perceptive and determined but not exactly the man you take home to meet your parents. Still, that whole dark and brooding thing he has going on totally got my pulse racing and he makes an excellent narrator.

His best friend Alphonse is a private detective and a whizz at all things IT. When he’s hired to investigate the murder of Kira Niemeyer, he quickly enlists the help of Jake. I really enjoyed the banter between these two. Their longtime friendship is a thing of beauty.

Now, this killer, The Watcher, is something else. Not only does he have the most unusual way of choosing his next victim, he also has a novel approach to deciding how they die. Genius! The Watcher is on a mission. He wants to go down in history and he will stop at nothing to achieve that.

Watching the Bodies is one of the best crime fiction thrillers I’ve ever read and a brilliant start to a new series. I could point out that maybe the ending wasn’t exactly what I’d been expecting but then I’d just be nitpicking. However, if the author’s aim was to leave the reader wanting more, then he totally succeeded in that and I absolutely can’t wait for the next instalment!

As Jake Boulder and Alfonse Devereaux start their investigations it soon becomes clear that the first victim, Kira, had some dark secrets – but were these what led to her murder? The body count continues to rise as The Watcher is unable to stop himself. Hired by Kira’s family to investigate her murder, Boulder and Alfonse are soon asked by the Chief of Police, Watson, to assist the department as it becomes clear to him that his own police team leave a lot to be desired when it comes to investigations! The race is on to catch the Watcher before the body count rises further.

Watching The Bodies is a fast paced, heart stopping and eye-popping read! It has a #KillerHook of an opening which places the reader as an unwitting voyeur as we watch the discovery of a body through the eyes of the #TheWatcher. Where chapters are narrated by the Watcher then the reader is pitched into the mindset of this individual and it made my skin crawl as I felt him worm his way under my skin. The body count is spiralling and his method of choosing how each one will die is novel (*takes note for future reference!*) This book was glued to my hands from the start to finish! I think I probably devoured it!

Well, I wasn’t really sure if I was ready for a new man from Graham Smith, given my #girlcrush on Harry Evans but when Jake Boulder rolled (yep terrible pun, I know!) into town he set my heart a pumpin that’s for sure!

Jake Boulder is cocksure and a little bit arrogant – we see this evidenced when he asks the new Chief in town “do you know who I am” But he wins my heart every time – he’s Scottish and Glaswegian by birth – hell what is not to like about that! I loved the references smattered throughout to Glaswegian slang – when he was in Hollywood and denounces Weeper as a “bawbag” I was howling! I love the Glesga patter!

Oh but his mammy! Oh, Boulder might be able to handle himself but his mum she knows just how to get to him! I could just see her, despite her years away from Glasgow, as one of those tough wee Glasgow mammies keeping her boy in line! There is so much to find out about Boulder and The Watcher just gives us a flavour of what’s to come!

Hmm, Leutienent Farrage (loved the name!) is not someone who Jake is going to get on with – I’ll be interested to see how this relationship develops throughout the series!

Watching The Bodies gives you twists and turns, a psychopathic serial killer all wrapped up with some violent deaths and neatly wrapped up by one of the newest Bad/Good guys in town!

You know that way a new book or series just slips into your mind and you relish the opportunity to get to know the characters, their strengths and their weaknesses…well Watching the Bodies is one of those books. We are given ample opportunity to find out all about Jake and what makes him tick and by the time I was finished I knew Graham Smith had left me wanting to find out more! A must read page turner that will compel you to read way beyond your bedtime! An awesome start to a new series and all I can say is roll on book number two!

Gawd. What a terrible book. Did this guy have an editor? How many times does he need to mention his boiling McDonald blood. Once or twice was sufficient.

And why is he still such a raging Scotsman when he has been in America for decades; he went over as a child.

Alphonse was pretty flat. He moved so little that I'd have assumed he was an immobilized hacker. But apparently he's out and about and has game with the ladies.

Jake bounced a couple of nights a week. What did he do the rest of the time. Could he just blow off his work when he was doing the investigation? Was Kira's Dad going to pay for all the investigation.

Sure the police ere inept, but the new chief dissing his own team just makes him look like an incompetent arse. It's so unprofessional. Why doesn't he try to make his team better?

This book was released in 2017. People has cell phones and Facebook and some other apps. But as Facebook is passe for young people, and noone is using Instagram, do we assume the time was earlier?

Regardless, this is modern enough that no person should be 'so lazy' as to not use fresh needles. And even if both Norm and his wife contracted HIV the treatment would have stopped either of them from developing AIDS. This was so dumb and annoyed the hell out of me. No one wants HIV, but it hasn't been a death sentence in many, many years.

As for the use of medical supplies, when I give blood for example, for the hemoglobin test the nurse used three cotton balls to clear three tiny dots of blood. The various nurses use several pairs of gloves. The needles and the tubing came from clean packages. Even our drug addicts get free clean needles. This story was preposterous.

I bookmarked another utterly stupid thing, but I returned the book before I could gather what I wanted to rant about.

Maybe I should downgrade to 1 star, but I save those for DNFs. Unfortunately I finished this one.

Huge Disappointment

The story received one star for the serial killer’s interesting method of selecting the next kill but the rest of the story was barely scan worthy. One dimensional characters, a main character who’d lived and attended school as an American but had little understanding of the country, police forces, and the FBI. The lack of research was appalling and I hope there will not be any sequels as the painful prose didn’t interest me enough to hope for more.

I’m thrilled to be the next spot on the Watching the Bodies North American blog tour! Watching the Bodies is the first book in Graham Smith’s new Jake Boulder series.

After a murder happens in a small town outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, the police are unprepared to handle the case. Jake Boulder steps in with friend Alfonse, who also happens to be a private investigator, to help the police with the case. As the killer’s pattern becomes clear, the investigative team realizes they have to rush before more bodies accumulate. It’s not long before word gets out that Boulder happens to be the most helpful person on the case, which makes him a target for our serial killer. In a thrilling game of cat and mouse, it’s clear only one will make it out alive – will it be Boulder, or The Watcher?

Watching the Bodies was my first foray into Graham Smith’s work, and it definitely won’t be my last! Police procedurals can be very hit or miss for me, and this one worked perfectly. We got to see Boulder in his professional capacity, but we also learned about him as a person, and got to see his relationship with his mother and friend Alfonse, which I really enjoyed.

The novel got off to a quick start, but really hooked me about a quarter of the way in. From then on, I couldn’t put the book down, and read it through to the end. The end of the book was so tense and fast paced, and I couldn’t get enough of it! I was dying to see how everything turned out, and I was not disappointed. I especially loved the chapters that were told through the killer’s POV, as well as the working relationship that built between Boulder and Chief Watson. While the ending did conclude the story, I did feel like it was a little abrupt, however, I think that will set the reader up nicely for future books in the series.

Overall, I can see why this one has received such rave reviews, and I’d definitely recommend it for all fans of police procedurals! I’m excited to read more of Smith’s work, and I’d like to thank the publisher, Bloodhound Books, for a copy of the novel. It was my pleasure to provide an honest review!

Fans of classic detective stories will love this twisted serial killer saga that pits a madman against an amateur sleuth who gets in over his head when asked to look into a local girl's murder.

The novel has a distinct Agatha Christie feel and delivers on the classic suspense, just like the legendary author.

The town of Casperton is rocked when a girl is found murdered, quite brutally. Her rich parents enlist the help of the local PI, Alphonse, who pulls his friend, Jake Boulder into the investigation. While this looks like a "straightforward" killing as details of the victim's life emerge, soon more bodies are found and it becomes apparent that the town is in the grip of a madman, who will do anything for one more kill.

I liked Jake as a character, he was quirky and flawed, but very sharp and good-natured. He makes a great "hero" for the story and I'm interested to see more of him and where he goes throughout the series. The other characters were great too - Jake's mother, Alphonse and Kira (the victim) were all really interesting.

The mystery was solid - not too twisty as has been the recent trend, but really a battle of wits between the detectives and the killer, to see who wins. And it's quite a ride. The "action" isn't what's important, it's the game of wits between the parties.

There were a couple of interesting subplots that I wish had gotten more time (like, Kira's, um, fixation on Jake or the killer's past) but i think that's fairly typical for series debuts, as authors try out and see what works for the blend of characters.

Overall, I'm excited to see where this series goes in the future.

I was really looking forward to reading a new series featuring a new character by Graham Smith. Jake Boulder is the polar opposite of Smith's previous character Harry Evans. Jaake is not a police office, nor is he ex special forces, he is actually a normal bloke that works on the door of a local bar, but he most definitely comes accross as the dark and moody type that's for sure.

His long term friend Alfonse is an Investigator who has been hired by the family of a murder victim Kira Niemeyer. Jake works alongside him using his own methods and they inadvertantly manage to annoy the local police. With this small town in Utah, it's no wonder that happened and it soon becomes apparent that the local police also have a reputation as lazy, so with a new Chief in town he happily takes help on the investigation meaning Jake and Alphonse get to see a lot more than they bargained for.

The Watcher is the persson behond the spate of killings and as we see chapters interweaved among those featuring Jake, you get to see him plan and execute all the while just waiting to be discovered. I think writing a series set in the US is very risky for a Brit, but thik Graham has done a stellar job and created not only a great series but exceedingly good characters that go with it. I loved the method the killer had to choose his next kill annd found myself thoroughly entertained with this book from start to finish. I think there is more to come with this series but an absolutely blinding start!

Jake Boulder is a night club bouncer in Casperton, a small town in Utah. He occasionally helps his private eye friend, Alfonse, with some of his cases. Jake, a Scot, a fighting MacDonald, is the man of action and Alfonse is the brilliant techie.

The first victim in the book is Kira Niemeyer, who is a former lover of Jake. The Watcher, the killer, is concealed in the undergrowth, observing the discovery of her body. At first, you think that it is because he gets a kick out of seeing the reaction, but it turns out to be so much more than that.

There is a connection between the discoverer of the victim and the choice of his next target. It also comes to light that Kira is not his first victim. Far from it.

We soon get clues to the identity of the serial killer and the author does a fantastic job of describing both the killings and the convergence of the paths of the murderer and Jake.

The Casperton detectives are as incompetent as the Keystone Cops, which is very frustrating for the new Chief of police. He is grateful that he has Alfonse and Jake to assist his enquiries.

The story rolls along at a terrific pace, with graphic descriptions and wonderful tension-building. The characters are very well developed.

This is a great read with a gripping climax. Some parts of it are less than believable, but that adds to the fun. I have no hesitation in awarding five stars to this book and I highly recommend it to you.

I have been very open on Clues and Reviews with my police procedural struggle. In general, I find them to be redundant and slow moving. However, Watching the Bodies broke all of my previous thoughts. Throughout my reading, I kept thinking to myself “this is what a police procedural style serial killer thriller is supposed to feel like!” (try saying that three times fast!). Mind you, Boulder isn’t technically a police officer, but it was close enough.

Fast paced, suspenseful, action packed and led by a stellar, brooding protagonist (Jake Boulder), I found myself unable to put this novel down. I finished it in a single sitting. I can tell you right now that my introduction to the work of Graham Smith will not be my last; I couldn’t get enough of Smith’s writing style!

The novel opens with Boulder helping out with a current police investigation of a vicious murder; soon, as more murders take place and a connection between the victims are made, Boulder realizes he is dealing with a serial killer. What begins as a standard investigation quickly turns into a game of cat and mouse and only one person can make it out alive…

The characterization in this book was phenomenal. Boulder was mysterious, cocky and a little aloof, but surprisingly very likeable. I was drawn to him immediately; I will be waiting patiently for the next Jake Boulder book (there better be a second book!!). I also loved the serial killer character, known as The Watcher, who got to narrate a few chapters and completely creep me out.

Overall, other than a few pacing issues 75% of the way into the novel, I loved every second of this book. If you are looking for a fast-paced, serial killer thriller (think Ragdoll by Daniel Cole), then you will love Watching the Bodies.

Add this one to your TBR piles folks, you will not be disappointed.

THANKS TO BLOODHOUND BOOKS AND THE AUTHOR FOR A DIGITAL COPY OF THIS NOVEL; IT WAS MY PLEASURE TO PROVIDE AN HONEST REVIEW!

Watching the bodies by Graham smith.
When Jake Boulder is asked by his PI friend to help investigate the vicious murder of Kira Niemeyer, he soon finds himself tracking a serial killer who selects his next victim in a most unusual manner.
As the body count rises, Boulder has to work with the police to identify the heinous killer before more lives are taken. What ensues is a twisted game of cat and mouse, that only Boulder or the Watcher can survive. But who will it be?
Another fantastic read from Graham. Couldn't put it down. Full of twists and plots. 5*. Highly recommended. Bloodhounds books.

Exciting serial killer novel with small town police force totally unprepared to handle this type of crime.Luckily, they get help from a total outsider.

4.5*

After reading and enjoying Graham Smith's fabulous DI Harry Evans series, I was quite excited to see what this author had in store for his readers in 'Watching the Bodies', the first book in a brand new series.

This series is somewhat different to the DI Harry Evans one, but if the first instalment is anything to go by, it will most definitely be equally brilliant. Set in the USA, in a town named Casperton, Utah, the main character is Jake Boulder. In a welcome departure from most crime thrillers, Jake is neither a cop nor a private investigator. He's a Scottish ex-pat working as a bouncer in a bar.

"She fits the pattern. She will die tonight."

One night Jake is approached by his friend Alfonse, who's a private investigator. Alfonse wants Jake to help him investigate the vicious murder of a common acquaintance, a Kira Niemeyer. Jake knew the woman well and agrees to help his friend. With the local PD made up of a bunch of good-for-nothing, disrespectful incompetents, the two men agree with Chief Watson to assist him in their own investigation of Kira's murder.

And suddenly another murder hits the small community. This time a man is bludgeoned to death. What's happening in Casperton? Two murders taking place in as many days is unheard of in the small town. There's nothing common between both cases, but could they be connected somehow?

When more murder victims are discovered in rapid succession, each killed in a completely different way, Jake is sure the town is in the grip of a serial killer who doesn't stick to one MO. But with no witnesses or trace evidence, how could Jake ever catch this shrewd killer? He needs to find a link between the murder victims, but how? None of the victims are related or of the same age group or sex. So how is the killer selecting them? When the case suddenly becomes personal, Jake vows to stop at nothing to bring this monster to justice.

This was a brilliant, fast-paced read and I really enjoyed it. Jake Boulder is a great character. Prone to drink binges, he's strong, witty, determined and fearless, but not without his own fears, which he keeps well hidden. He loves women, but stable relationships are definitely not for him. Alfonse is also a likeable character and together he and Jack form an invincible team and complement each other perfectly. And I'm sure you'll love Jake's ballsy mum as much as I did.

Stretching his dark imagination to the limits, the author has filled this book with murders... of all kinds! What starts as an investigation into the life and murder of a free-spirited, wayward lady, (the first part of the book), rapidly escalates into a frenetic hunt for a violent killer stalking the streets of Casperton. Chapters from the pov of the killer made my blood run cold. I was amazed by the ingenious 'pattern' devised by the killer to select the next victim. Well done to the author for this great idea.

With unwavering tension, fast-paced action, a creepy killer, murders galore, twists and turns and a great protagonist to boot, this book kept me hooked and interested from start to finish. Short chapters, many of which ending in cliffhangers, kept me entertained and on my toes throughout. The breathtaking finale made me gasp... literally.

'Watching the Bodies' is an exciting, fantastic start to a fab new series and I can't wait to join Boulder again on his next adventure. Highly recommended!

With thanks to Bloodhound Books for an ARC and to Ms Sarah Hardy of #bytheletterbookreviews for organising and inviting me to take part in the blog tour of this book.

As I'm on the blog tour for the second Jake Boulder book I wanted to read the first one as soon as I could and OMG I should have read this book weeks ago, I have seriously been missing out!! I just loved it!!  It has just the right pace, the story was fab and I flew through the book - I couldn't wait to get to the end to find out what would happen and I wasn't disappointed at all.  I honestly loved this book and Jake's character was well written and I loved how he interacted with the others in the book, especially his mum!  Definitely 5 stars from me and really looking forward to reading The Kindred Killers now... if its anything like the first book, I can't wait!!!

I bought this because I’d really enjoyed the author’s recent ‘Lakes’ series with a different publisher. Sadly, I didn’t get along with this anywhere near as well. I found the initial premise unconvincing, that two amateurs could solve the problems the local police department were too stupid to deal with. The main character is smug and prone to temper and fighting. The story surrounds the activities of a serial killer and eventually the FBI are brought in, yet still the amateurs are on the case. The editing was a bit lax and I found the ending abrupt and unsatisfactory.

Watching the Bodies came highly recommended by my lovely and very knowledgeable friend Noelle (crimebookjunkie!), so I had high expectations for this book! Of course, you can't help feeling excited when your friends tell you a book or an author is among their favorites! And I can totally see why lovers of the genre should give the Jake Boulder series a chance!

What the hell was that plot????? This is me screaming. Not because I'm mad and saw plenty of holes in the story. On the contrary, the only holes were the ones left on the body when the killing required it... But the mind behind this crime plot is really really really good. Brilliant. I can't reveal a single thing about it, it's the power of the reader who has finished a book, but also their curse, as I just want to warn everyone and stop shivering when I think of the calculations it took to put the pieces together and come up with such a terrific and coldly logical killing plan!

Being right has never seemed so wrong.

The different narrations, from the good to the bad guys, don't take any of the tension away. I was racing from one POV from the other to know who would get there first! If you haven't guessed already, there's more tension in this book than your cardiologist would advise you to get! What starts as a single private investigation about the murder of a woman turns into a totally frantic and desperate race against the clock and a breathtaking chase for a serial killer! Every detail fits the picture, which is always something I appreciate. I hate loose ends and sloppy investigations. Procedures were followed, another good point! Also, I was both surprised and pleased by the choice of the author to make his main character a civilian...

Everything about the area screams bland domesticity to me. I want to leave in case it's contagious.

Yes, it's time to talk about the cast this thrilling adventure features! Jake Boulder is not even a private investigator per se! It's his best friend who's running a company and he is the big guy, the helping hand, the sidekick... So much for the anti-hero! I truly believe this is one of the reasons I appreciated Jack so quickly. He doesn't have a huge ego, he doesn't need the light to be on him. On the contrary, he is okay with being the +1. The two men being complementary was perfect and really emphasized the fact Jack isn't looking for the spotlight. And most of all, Jack is not a steroids-filled macho, he is a guy who is not afraid to say he's afraid, or at least to be honest with himself and admit it in his head! He never tries to take control of the events and his willingness to play as a team, whether with his friends or with the police made me fall for him! His only concern was to get to the bottom of the case... Except this case is bottomless!!!

Now something about the police itself. I felt a little bad that only the chief got to be efficient and clever. Small towns or big cities, you'll always find workers who... let's say are not extra motivated or don't have the skills to handle big events happening, but I couldn't help but think the police force deserves a little more respect, even though things got easier on them as the story unfolded. I really wanted to believe there were more than one able cope around!

There was enough information about every character to picture them and get a real view of what was happening. Reactions were genuine, descriptions were on point, stereotypes were accounted for (they exist because they fill our world!).

A point I hesitated before mentioning, but my honesty and my perfectionism as a former student in Japanese force me to is the use of Hara-Kiri. I have nothing to say about the method itself, but the book mentions Hari-Kari every time, which is a misspelling for Hara-Kiri, or Seppuku. I am aware this is only a detail, but it just distracted me from the story.

Last but not least, the writing style matches the protagonists and the dark atmosphere of the story. I felt the words were rushing me to keep going in a very addictive way and the balance between all events keeps the reader from feeling exhausted. It only feels as if you're following everything at the same time as the characters do, in a Jack Bauer kind of way, but better!

Watching the Bodies is a gripping first installment that introduces a different male character in a dark world. I'm looking forward to reading Jake's next ... adventure!

I'd like to thank Sarah Hardy for my copy of this book.

Watching The Bodies is the start of Graham Smith’s new series featuring Jake Boulder. Along with introducing us to new characters, Smith takes us to the USA as it is set in Casperton, Utah. I have really enjoyed the books I have read in Smith’s Major Crime Team series and was eager to get my hands on a copy of Watching The Bodies.

Jake Boulder is a Glaswegian living in Utah, working as a doorman in a local rock bar and occasional private investigator to help out his friend Alfonse. When the body of a local girl and friend, Kira, is discovered with multiple stab wounds, Alfonse is hired by her family to find her killer. Jake agrees to help his friend as the local police force are, quite frankly, pretty useless. As more bodies are found, Jake and Alfonse find themselves in a frantic race against time to work out who the killer is before the body count becomes even higher.

It’s always exciting to be introduced to the new characters in a series and Jake Boulder is brilliant! I loved the fact that he is Scottish (especially Glaswegian) and that he feels a connection to his Scottish roots despite having lived in America for a number of years. It makes a change when the main character is not a detective as it gives you a different perspective and they are not governed by the procedures and red tape that police personnel are. It gives them scope to be a bit naughty within their investigation, bypassing the need for court orders. I’m looking forward to seeing how Jake’s character develops throughout the series.

I love a well-developed, intriguing baddie in a crime novel and Smith has created his wonderfully. Smith tells the story through Jake in first and the Watcher in third person narrative, the switch between the two works really well in giving you both perspectives. Smith tantalisingly drip feeds information about the Watcher throughout the novel leaving you wanting to understand him. I was dying to find out the motivation for his crimes and the reasons for who he is choosing to kill. Smith has effectively created a clever, fascinating antagonist.

As Jake makes the connections needed to solve the crimes, and the book reaches its staggering crescendo, the reader is left on the edge of their seat. Watching the Bodies is a fast-paced, riveting page-turner that is incredibly difficult to put down. A fantastic and promising start to a new crime series.

A huge thank you to Graham Smith and Sarah Hardy of Bloodhound Books for my advance copy and for inviting me to take part in the blog tour.

We are introduced to Jake Boulder in Graham Smith’s new novel Watching the Bodies, and wow what a character he is.
I must admit it took a while to warm up to him, he is asked by his friend Alfonse to help with the investigation of Kira Niemeyer’s homicide.

The book is set in Casperton, Utah.  Which I was surprised about as I have read Graham’s previous novels. However the Smith Style is there.

I was drawn in with the storyline, and Smith set the scene for Boulder quite quickly, he is rough, but likeable and within the book, he has some great characters he works alongside.
He has a great bond with Alfonse which you pick up on from the beginning, and I love his relationship with his mum.
There is enough angst, grit, and humanity to Boulder that makes him so likeable, and you really are on his side hoping he catches the killer.
The plotline within the reason why the killer kills was so clever, I found it fascinating.  The book heats up as it goes on, and Boulder is working alongside the police to help catch the killer. Boulder is a brilliant character and one to smoulder over...

Jake Boulder is a Scottish hardman transported to the USA who works as a bouncer and also as an assistant to his PI friend Alfonse. As they investigate the death of one of Jake’s old flames, they discover that there is a serial-killer on the loose.

Watching The Bodies is the first in what promises to be a cracking new series from Graham Smith.

Hard-hitting, tightly paced and with lots of great twists and turns.
