The Stationmaster's Cottage is one of those books that you come across purely by chance and are so glad when it does. It's a romance book which gives you such good vibes and since I read this book in between all the dark thrillers I was reading, it was a breath of fresh air. Everything is good about this book-the story is heart breaking and heart warming, the characters are believable and the pace is well balanced. River's End, a small coastal town in Australia where the story is based, sounds like a perfect place to live and love without any real life tensions. This book also reminds me of all the good Hallmark movies I have watched over the years and I do hope that this book gets made into a movie.

The Stationmaster's Cottage is the first book in the series and I will try to read the other books as well. I got a copy of an e-Arc from NetGalley.

Decades old family secrets, a rundown cottage with heartbreaking history and a spectacular coastal locale is at the heart of author Phillipa Nefri Clark’s intriguing novel, The Stationmaster’s Cottage. Weaving the love stories of two women, separated by time but forever tied together by lineage, The Stationmaster’s Cottage will delight readers who enjoy unravelling secrets of the past.

The focus of The Stationmaster’s Cottage begins with Christie Ryan, a young makeup artist, who is in a relationship with a handsome but rather self absorbed man named Derek. Of late, Christie and Derek have struggled to connect in their relationship due to time constraints. An opportunity to embark on a romantic getaway is just what this couple needs. However, on the day of departure to romantic bliss, Christie receives some devastating news, her grandmother has passed away. Although estranged from her grandmother, Christie feels she still must say goodbye properly and attend the funeral. It is later revealed that although Christie was estranged from her grandmother, she still played a vital role in Christie’s life, caring for her after both her parent’s tragically died. With a funeral to attend in the small coastal town of River’s End, Christie cancels her trip with Derek. When she arrives at River’s End, Christie learns she is the recipient of a rundown cottage, courtesy of her grandmother and great aunt Martha. The discovery of a set of love letters from over half a century ago and a stunning painting inside the cottage sets Christie off on a journey into the past, revealing much about her grandmother, great aunt and a mysterious man named Thomas Blake. Aiding Christie in her investigations into her family’s past and settling a decade’s old mystery is Martin Blake, a local resident and relative of Thomas Blake. The cottage has many secrets to share, but these do not come easily to Christie.

I was pleased to be given an opportunity to read and review this engaging novel. Phillipa Nefri Clark is a new writer on my reading radar and after reading The Stationmaster’s Cottage, I would be keen to explore more of her work in the future. I was enlightened to discover that The Stationmaster’s Cottage was inspired by a property nearby to the author. Just like the author, I am deeply intrigued by the secret history properties have to share with us. I liked how the author drew inspiration from a real life locale to inform her story. The passages focussed on the cottage and the surrounding coastal locale were a pleasure to read. Clark’s prose in these areas is vivid, as well as rich in detail, enabling the reader to feel like they are truly a part of the setting. It is also very clear the author has a deep infinity to the sea, which transferred to the page with ease.

The device of using a mysterious painting and a collection of love letters from many years ago to drive the narrative was a good choice on behalf of the author. I love stories about family secrets and those that involve important props such as letters, serve to make the book more appealing. The family mystery aspect of the novel ignited my curiosity in this book and encouraged me to read the novel in a relatively short time period. Readers will no doubt find The Stationmaster’s Cottage a highly readable and accessible novel. The pace of the book is set at an ideal level, so the reader can immerse themselves completely in the unfolding story. My only qualm with the novel was the transitions from the past to present, which I can appreciate is not an easy task. At times, I felt the movements from the past to the present timelines were not quite as clear as they could have been.

The Stationmaster’s Cottage is novel rich in character. Christie’s journey is a worthy one and she makes an obvious transition from a young woman ruled by her domineering partner, to a stronger woman in charge of her own destiny by the close of the book. Her accompanying love story is fraught with matters of the heart that made for an emotional read. Tied to Christie’s story is her great aunt Martha’s story. I did enjoy this aspect of the novel slightly more than Christie’s story. Martha’s story takes to reader back in time and reveals a tragic past, defined by misunderstanding and unfortunately matters left unsaid, leaving a trail of broken hearts that reverberates across the decades. Thankfully, through Christie’s involvement, there is a satisfying ending in store for the characters featured in both the past and present day timelines.

The Stationmaster’s Cottage was a lovely read from cover to cover. I would not hesitate to recommend this novel to those who appreciate intricate love stories and well woven dual time frame books, in the same vein as Kate Morton’s novels.

*With thanks to the author, Phillipa Nefri Clark, for providing me with a copy of this novel, in exchange for an honest review.

The death of Christie Ryan’s grandmother was the beginning of a profound change in her life. As she headed to the small country town of River’s End to meet Angus, Gran’s long-time employee, it was much against her fiancé Derek’s wishes. He was scornful of her need to go to the funeral, and Christie’s heart broke a little at his words. But she needed to do this; Derek would have to wait.

River’s End was only a few hours from Melbourne, but Christie had never heard of the place. She and her Gran had never been close; a seemingly hard-hearted woman, Christie was about to learn a lot of things about secrets from her Gran’s past – about her family’s past. The stationmaster’s cottage in River’s End was now hers, having been left to Christie. It was run down and in a bad way, but it had a certain charm and Christie knew almost immediately that she wouldn’t sell it. The ocean was near, the peace and tranquility perfect.

But as Christie cleaned the cottage, she came across letters in the attic, a painting, a diary and more. Who were the people involved? Was it a long lost relative or a total stranger? Written fifty years prior, Christie could feel the need to solve the puzzle; to help if she could. Her own life was up in the air; should she investigate the past, or sort out what was happening here and now?

And I have just discovered another author to love! The Stationmaster’s Cottage is my first by Aussie author Phillipa Nefri Clark; it’s also her debut. What a debut! I loved the story of Christie, her Gran, Martha and Thomas, Martin and of course Randall. The Stationmaster’s Cottage is filled with rich characters, even the side players; the scenery overlooking the ocean; the small country town and the friendliness of the locals – all makes this a heartwarming and heartbreaking historical fiction novel which I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

This one was a very pleasant surprise which I read because I recognised the author's name from another series she writes.

Usually I am not a fan of romances but The Stationmaster's Cottage captured me totally. I enjoyed all the characters, good and bad, but especially Christie and Martin. There is a mystery involving a past love affair, lots of secrets, discoveries about the past and a very touching ending.

Best of all when I finished the book I thought I was finished with River's End but then I realised it was the first book of a series! What bliss! Now I need to know what happens to Christie and Martin next. Will the dreaded Derek return? I fear he might........

The Stationmaster's Cottage (Rivers End #1), by Phillipa Nefri Clark

A literary letdown of epic proportions: a painfully banal narrative filled with annoying characters, questionable dialogue, unending melodrama and a failed attempt at blending mystery and romance in the most abysmal way imaginable.

This was a thoroughly, abysmally and disgustingly bad book. The worst book I’ve read in a very long time. I picked it up because it was shelved as Romance and Mystery, two genres that I usually enjoy and I was intrigued how this would play out.

Little was I prepared for the almost unbearable banality of the "mystery" that turned out to be a silly family drama and the extreme levels of melodrama.

»“How could you have done it?” Christie cried. “I will never forgive you. Never!”«
(On a graveyard, towards a dead person, during a thunderstorm.)

Basically, in the past Martha and Thomas were engaged but due to meddling by family and friends were never married. In the present, film and TV makeup artist Christie Ryan, Martha’s great-niece, is also engaged. In her case to cliché “evil land developer” Derek who bullies her and becomes violent if he deems it necessary.

The problem is: The past engagement drama is supposed to play out in 1967/1968. Martha and Thomas, each in their early twenties at the time, seem to be stuck in an earlier era:

»"You need someone to curb your wild nature. Someone with a firm hand," he whispered.
Martha opened her eyes. “You can’t tame the wind. Or the ocean, except in your paintings.” Her expression dared him to disagree.
«

Taming of the shrew? Yikes. Thomas behaves like that and Martha doesn’t run…

Christie is not much better in her interactions with her fiancé Derek.

»Christie went numb. “Why don’t you understand?”

"I do understand. That's the problem, Chris. From the day we first met, I knew you needed a man who would guide you through life. You're too trusting and generous. I mean, those are admirable qualities, but it doesn't get you anywhere, and you'll end up being badly hurt."

But you’re hurting me now! What did he want her to say? Apparently, nothing, as he was happy to continue.
«

That’s pretty much the same Thomas said and Christie hardly ever ceases to find excuses for this kind of behaviour. Excuse me while I vomit.

When Christie’s grandmother, Dorothy the meddler, dies, Christie travels to River’s End to attend the funeral alone because Derek prefers to visit a luxury resort alone instead of supporting Christie.

Once there and somewhat settling in her newly-inherited cottage, the eponymous “Stationmaster’s Cottage”, Christie finds and reads a lot of unopened letters from Thomas to Martha, her grandmother’s diary and finds some revealing items and, like that, discovers what’s behind the “mystery”. Those letters which we get to read in full as well, also read like they’ve fallen out of time. They’re also just plain annoying and page-fillers.

After half of the book I strongly considered DNF’ing but just couldn’t bring myself to do it. That’s when Martin, Thomas’ grandson and Christie’s new-found love-interest comes fully into play - and things go further downhill. Martin behaves arrogantly, patronisingly and is extremely and excessively dominant towards Christie whom he’s interested in but collectively tries to punish for her major original sin:

»If only she were not Dorothy's grandchild.«

Christie feels that but nevertheless falls in love pretty much immediately and, just like that, picks up the next abusive guy:

»Martin stopped. He half-smiled at his dog and Christie, still cuddling on the sand. “We need to talk. Walk with me.”
It was a command, not an invitation. It took all of two seconds for Christie to get back to her feet and jog after him, Randall in tow.
«

(Randall being the real dog here…)

I guess Christie likes him for his generosity towards her, though…

»You only ever need to tell me what you want to, Christie. Just because I ask a question, doesn't mean you have to answer."«

The moment that broke the proverbial camel’s back, though, came a bit later. Read carefully now and maybe, like me thrice, till you understand what the author of a novel published in 2017 (!) seems to find ok, if not condone:

»“I’m not coming to your rescue anymore today. What are you going to do when I leave?”
- “Lock the door.”
"Lock the door. Didn't I ask you to do that last time I left?"
Wide-eyed, Christie nodded. Martin slipped an arm around her waist and pulled her close against his body, forcing her to look up at him.
- “The day for a discussion about respect, and now, about putting yourself at risk, is getting close. Before you leave this door unlocked again, think about how much you value sitting down to eat dinner.”
«

I get the author probably thinks Martin is just being protective and internationally-travelled Christie, successful in her career, is a damsel in distress who needs rescuing. Excuse me, though: Threatening, even as a “joke”, physical violence? That’s just a total deal breaker and completely unacceptable. At that point, Christie should have kicked Martin’s pompous and overbearing arse out and locked him out forever.

(To boot, that happens immediately after Christie had already been threatened and physically hurt by Derek…)

Of course, everything gets resolved as if by magic and, within a few weeks, Christie moves from one abuser, Derek, to a new one, Martin, but at that point, the novel is so far beyond redemption that none of that really matters anymore.

I’m just glad to get rid of this novel. One out of five stars.

WOW this is such an awesome story a debut for MS Nefri Clark and a total winner amazing story a time slip set in the late 1960’s and present time, a story of family secrets true love and lost love. My advice make yourself comfortable and sit back with this one because you are not going to want to put it down.

Make-up artist Christie Ryan is just about to leave on a romantic getaway with her fiancé Dereck when she gets a message that her estranged grandmother has passed away and that the funeral will be held in the small coastal town of River’s End and against Dereck’s wishes she goes off to attend the funeral. Christie’s childhood was a tough one losing her parents when she was young and then being bought up by her stern unloving grandmother but she needs to say goodbye never realizing what a nest of secrets and mystery that she has left Christie to uncover in this beautiful town.

Martin Blake has lived in River’s End his entire life he is an artist who comes across as a bit harsh but that is not so when he sees this woman at the funeral of someone that he classes as enemy and there are very good reasons why he does he is maddened but he is also drawn to this beautiful woman and when they are pushed together because of a painting and some letters well let’s just say they are in for an up and down journey.

There are two love stories in this one two beautiful love stories I might add that will bring you to tears as it did me this debut is beautifully written the characters are rich and engaging and the emotions fly off the pages the setting is amazing and the secrets that are uncovered by Christie will make your heart pound and getting angry with some people. Yes this is a story that I highly recommend so many emotions so much joy in the end the best. Congrats MS Nefri Clark on a fabulous debut.

Not very often does a book leave your soul to bleed as this one did to me. The author engaged me in her work of fine writing throughout. A time slip story taking place in modern times as well as the back story taking place in 1967. A perfect blend of suspense that kept me reading, romance and perseverance. There are many secrets in this book and Christie Ryan sets out to solve them as they are her families history. When she inherits an old Stationmaster's Cottage in a town she's never heard of after her grandmother's death she discovers fifty year old love letters that are unopened. There are so many times while reading this I would ask WHY and catch my breath. The writing is superb and I REALLY want to read the sequel to this!

After reading the entire Alien series (lol), my soul was thirsty for a heartwarming love story spiced up with a little mystery.
This beautiful cover drew me in and I was not disappointed.
The Stationmaster's Cottage was full of surprises, good and bad, such as secret love letters, surprise inheritance, and discovering, upon closer examination, that some relationships lack integrity and selflessness.
Even though I knew exactly where this was going, the journey was very enjoyable.
It was narrated by Katherine Littrell and her wonderful Australian accent, which made it all the more pleasant. Thank you.

4⭐ = Good.
Awww.... what a sweet story... and believe me, I'm not a slushy person at all!
I'm rather taken with Australian authors at the moment and have quite a few on my TBR tower.

This was a simple page turner, and no, I wouldn't often choose to read a romantic book but this one had a hint of mystery to it.
Yes , I kind of guessed how everything would turn out, but the amount of smiles on each page, kept me interested.
Well written and I'll be visiting the next in the series, at some point.

This is one of those stories that time-hops between now and the past. It involved love letters, betrayal, family secrets etc etc.

i have to be honest. I didnt like Christie. I didnt really like any of the characters. Christie was engaged to Derek, a demanding bully who expected her to be at his beck and call. Fair enough - there needs to be one oafish lout in a story, but then Christie meets Martin (the love interest)

Martin was also an oaf. Rude, arrogant, obnoxious. But of course Christie falls in lurve with Martin even though he is as much a bully i his own way, as Derek.

"We need to talk. Walk with me."
It was a command, not an invitation. It took all of two seconds for Christie to get back on her feet and jog after him.

WTF??

Martin checked his watch, and dropped onto the sand, stretching his legs out.
"Sit," he said.
With a small bemused sigh, she joined him.

By this point I was wondering if Christie had a thing for arrogant, bulling males. Then I read this:

Christie took a step towards Martin, who put up his hand and shook his head. "I'm so angry with you right now. So disappointed."
Without another word or glance he spun away and stalked back to the steps.

There is NO WAY I could continue a relationship with a man who spoke to me like that.

AND THEN THERE WAS THIS (and fuck me I read this and couldn't believe that anyone would think this was an appropriate thing to say to a woman -and before anyone asks - no. This is NOT a DD relationship.)

"The day for a discussion about putting yourself at risk, is getting close. Before you leave this door unlocked again, think about how much you value sitting down to eat dinner."
He let the implication sink in.

Read that again.

HE THREATENS TO SPANK HER IF SHE DOES NOT DO WHAT HE DEMANDS!! Actually, 'spank' isnt really the right word. He threatens to hit her, and not just once. He threatens to hit her SO HARD she will be unable to sit down. That's not 'love'. That is abuse. Physical and emotional abuse. Wife-beating abuse. Put a woman in hospital abuse. What will he do next time she disobeys him?

Slap her around a few times? Break some bones?

Rape her??

What sort of 'man' thinks he has the right to threaten physical violence on a woman like that??

Would SOMEONE please explain, because for the love of god I cannot see how any woman would stay with an abuser like this.

I wasn't going to rate this book before I read that part. But oh boy, I changed my mind.

And people give this 5 stars?? WTF.

5 big fat Stars, but seriously, The Stationmaster’s Cottage by Phillipa Nefri Clark deserves so many more.

Wow. Superb. Beautiful. Outstanding.

This just might be my favourite read of 2017.

The day I started reading this I was sitting at a picnic table which overlooked the beautiful foreshore of Wollongong. In between reading I was hoping to gaze at the scenery and also watch what was going on around me but the rolling waves , the stunning mountain vista, people enjoying their barbecue lunches, all was completely forgotten. My eyes only focused on the words and my ears were deaf to sound so engrossed was I in reading this beautiful story.
The Stationmaster’s Cottage is a gripping tale of family secrets, a mysterious painting, love letters, two different time periods, two gorgeous love stories, a stunning coastal town, all which make for an extraordinary story.
Loved this book so much…it’s a must read.
I’ll be sure to keep a lookout for more from this author.

Highly, highly recommended.

The setting for this story is beautiful and the story is a heart touching that takes readers back generations. In the present, Christie Ryan was given a cottage after the death of her grandmother. the cottage isn't much to look at but the secrets hidden inside are what make this story of romance, mystery and courage. This is a well written story that is a good one to read when you feel like getting lost in the secrets of the past.

This one had me enthralled. A dual timeline story of love, loss and redemption. An unexpected inheritance, family secrets, unopened love letters, an unsigned painting and small town inhabitants regarding a newcomer with varying degrees of friendliness and suspicion. And who doesn't love a handsome, grumpy neighbour with a delightful dog.

As far as wholesome, light romances go, this wasn’t bad. The description of the setting was phenomenal, the mystery was good. My main issues were pacing and character development. I fell more for Rivers’s End itself than Christie and Martin, or Thomas and Martha. I enjoyed the reunion scene towards the end, the dog was adorable, Derek was a right tool. I feel like more could have been explored though. For instance…
-Derek and Ingrid
-More about Dorthy’s reasoning beyond “I was trying to protect my sister” and better closure for Christie over Dorthy’s role in the situation
-More development of Christie and Martin’s relationship overall
All things considered, it was an enjoyable enough read, and I am curious to read more in the series.

This was recommended by a friend and I was happy to see that my library had the audiobook. Sadly, it didn't work for me. The plot was all over the place and the characters were not fully developed. And there wasn't one character that I liked (okay - maybe the dog...). There seemed to be lots of DRAMA in the story but it felt so contrived and didn't make sense. Also, this was a dual timeline story which can be quite tricky for an author to write well. The reader didn't help because she forgot to change voices for the characters so I didn't know if I was coming or going. And then I just wanted the book to be over and I didn't care if I were coming or going.

And now I am going... back to my library to get another book. I received a notice that my library actually purchased a book that I had recommended! Hope that's a good one.

A beautiful story of lost love. Heart warming as well as heart breaking this book is a crazy roller-coaster of emotions!!
Intriguing Epilogue which captivated my interest and continued to throughout the book
Loved the way the author mingled past and present as to reduce any confusion there may have been otherwise and to fill in any gaps
Excellent descriptions that paint a picture with words
Filled with mystery, heartbreak, loss, betrayal, surprises, romance, lost love and true love
Handful of grammatical errors but they don't affect the story
This work is as good as if not better than Nicholas Sparks!!
Highly recommend this book to fans of romance, Nicholas Sparks, mystery or just anyone looking for a stunning read. Would love to read more from this highly talented author xx

There’s a reason I don’t read romances anymore (I did when I was a teenager). The reason is only that they get on my nerves. This is not a bad book. But seriously how can the heroine not flipping see what a total dick her fiancé is? And couples disliking each other on meeting is rather a trope, but I don’t know how many devices there are out there in romance. But like I said, this isn’t a bad book, in fact I will probably read the next one. Right now I have to reread the end of this because because my sleeping pill was kicking in...

The cover drew me immediately – an old scroll, ribbon interlacing rings, a key and an old photo – were all elements that told a story of its own. This is a wonderful time-slip story set in a small town in Australia involving two love stories two generations apart and how they are entwined. Lovers of genealogy, history and romance will love this book. It uses an unusual layout and formatting which can be a bit distracting. Great debut novel

As a make-up artist, Christie Ryan has travelled the globe working for film productions but her life remains firmly in Melbourne, Australia with her fiance. The inheritance of a charming old cottage by the sea and a mysterious parcel leads her to question all she holds dear.

I loved the story-telling behind this mystery. Switching flawlessly back and forth between two eras, the author unfolds a well-honed tale of intrigue. Both stories were interwoven creating a cohesive whole that was definitely greater than the sum of its parts.

It's difficult to admit, but there was a side to both of Christie's romances that greatly troubled me. Both of the men in her life treated her as though she was either a child or mentally deficient. Martin Blake, the hero, particularly was guilty of this. He chastised her in the way that a father of long ago would have attempted to teach his child - through the means of threatening physical violence if an order is disobeyed. This, I felt, was both inappropriate and disturbing. Derek, her fiancé, was actually brutal and injured her.

On the whole, this was a great piece of escapism. I was drawn into the story so deeply that there were times when I had a hard time pulling myself back to reality. The mystery was both moving and tragic. Fair warning, though: there are some scenes in the book that are challenging emotionally to read.

Romantic fiction is not high on my list of preferences when it comes to literary genre. There was something intriguing about the synopsis of this read that caught my attention, the element of mystery. The author did an excellent job of teasing the reader as clues behind people, their motives, the places and their significance and the family history that was slowly being revealed. The characters were well written and described, without being too superficial or over the top or sentimental, you genuinely disliked the bad guy and wanted the main character to find her answers and personally succeed.

OMG, this is such a lovely story.

I do love discovering new authors, and I am thrilled with Phillipa's writing style, and have already purchased more in this fabulous series.
Christie travels to Rivers End to attend her Grandmother's funeral, and uncovers hidden letters and much much more.
A story full of secrets and lies; an enduring love, and healing, with flashbacks to the 1960's.
This very moving and compelling read had me hooked from beginning to end.
I admit to pausing occasionally to reach for the tissues.
Very highly recommended.

A story 50 years apart, in 1967 Martha and Thomas got engaged then it all went wrong.

Present day, Christie attends her estranged grandmother’s funeral and is surprised to be the inheritor a run-down stationmaster’s cottage in a small country village. She stumbles across things from the past showing deception and love. In amongst these finding from the past her own relationship and career are subject to lies and suspicion.

The dual timeline worked well enough to make it a pleasant read. There were some aspects that didn’t seem quite as cohesive as perhaps they could have been but overall a good and enthralling read.

Me surpreendeu. Positivamente com certeza. 5 estrelas.

The Stationmaster's Cottage by Phillipa Nefri Clark has received a Chill with a Book Readers' Award.

"Enthralling, gripping, more turns than a roundabout."

"Totally engaging, not over sugary with the romance and the mystery of the truth behind the family secrets was better handled than some mystery novels. Worked well as a stand alone and did not leave you unsatisfied at the end, more ready to read book two!"

"A lovely easy read. I started this novel and did not put it down until I finished it."
