Ohne fremde Hilfe leitete das 13jährige Wunderkind Blaise Pascal (1623 - 1662) die Grundlagen der Geometrie und Mathematik ab, entwarf als junger Mann die der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung und Statistik. Die Binomischen Formeln gehen auf ihn zurück, eine Abhandlung über Kegelschnitte verfaßte er mit 16 Jahren, skizzierte die erste Rechenmaschine mit 19 Jahren und formulierte mathematische Einsichten für die Infinitesimalrechnung, ohne die moderne Techniken undenkbar wären - eine rastlose, nervöse Existenz.
Vorläufer von Newton und Leibniz, Vordenker von Nietzsche, Kafka, Camus und Sartre ist erein innerlich zerrissener Christ, der eine Wette für die Existenz Gottes einging und doch an seinen Zweifeln litt: Pascal ist der erste, der die Dramatik, den Glanz und das Elend menschlichen Daseins hellsichtig, virtuos und vollendet formuliert hat - ein Genie für das 21. Jahrhundert.

About the author

Jacques Attali is a French economist and scholar. From 1981 to 1991, he was an advisor to President François Mitterrand. He subsequently cast doubt on Mitterrand's past as a mid-level Vichy government functionary in his retrospective of Mitterrand's career, C'était François Mitterrand, published in 2005.

In April 1991 he became the first President of the London-based European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the financial institution established by western governments to assist the countries of eastern and central Europe and the former Soviet Union in their transition to democratic market economies. He worked at the bank until 1993.

In 1998 Attali founded the French non-profit organization PlaNet Finance which focuses on microfinance.

Attali is perhaps best known in America as the author of Noise: The Political Economy of Music.

This is an important book for who wishes to discover and understand the short but full life of Blaise Pascal (1623-1662). The biography insists on all the important aspects and the author does so with a luxury of detail which brings Pascal close to us. One very good feature: Attali comments the various parts of Pascal's life and fights with fragments of his Pensées, thus enabling Pascal himself to jump to life. So his Pensées, which sometimes seem very allusive, are made to apply to events and to comment them in a very suggestive way. If you were also wondering about the famous rivalry between Jesuits and Jansenists, Attali's Blaise Pascal is the perfect way to start. I do not know Attali's religious bend, but certainly he has adapted himself remarkably well to Pascal's very demanding Christianity, and presents it without any wordly restraint.
This is the work of passion, a passion which centers on the theme of genius. The book's subtitle "le génie français" indicates that Attali believes Pascal has played an important role in the establishment of French classicism: the beautifullly clear language which he has practised has become the symbol of French style.

Je viens de terminer « Blaise Pascal ou le Génie français » écrit par #JacquesAttali. C’est un #livre a recommander aux personnes intéressées par l’#histoire de #France, et la période richissime de penseurs qui ont illuminé notre pays par leur Génie. Pascal en fait partie, et son histoire comme son éducation est incroyable. Cet #autodidacte a été formé par son #père, un homme intelligent, bienveillant qui mérite le souvenir. Les relations familiales, l’intimité, la maladie de Pascal est narré, un #homme d’exception qui a souffert d’un amour incestueux, comme d’une maladie aiguë. Ce livre est nécessaire on sent l’#amour du biographe pour son mentor.
Anecdote : dans mon court-métrage « #Marlowe » j’ai filmé le buste de Blaise Pascal, à l’Eglise Saint Étienne du Mont, un hommage a cet amoureux de #Faust et à Jacques.
Je précise également, que certains passage livre ne m’ont pas plus, sur certains points je ne suis pas du tout d’accord avec les Pensées de Pascal, mais c’est grâce à ces désaccords que je reconnais ce que lui ne reconnaît peut être pas : l’#ignorance de l’Homme et l’#humilité de celui-ci.

Biographie intéressante de ce génie, éminent mathématicien (inventeur de la calculatrice et du calcul intégral!), terriblement croyant et philosophe à ses heures.
