The Tenth Girl #4

Ghost in His Eyes

Rate this book
He was as magnetic as a deadly hurricane to the shore. Carson Cole was my first love. The boy I'd shared my whole self with. He was the man who'd taken the other part of my soul and drowned it in the sea we'd grown up in. And now he's back. Ten years later, and the demons of our past are still haunting every breath trapped between us. She was as wild as the horses who owned the beach highways we drove down. Blake Sayer was the beautiful daredevil who had me wrapped around her finger from the time we were seven. Until a horrible accident stole every piece of joy from her life. Ten years later, she's a shell of the girl she once was, and it's all my fault. The whispers of our history shackle her to the island I left behind. Just like lost years and unspoken words, love had slipped from our fingers like grains of sand. We’d barely made it out alive last time, was it even possible to reconstruct the shattered pieces of us?

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading Ghost in His Eyes as I hadn't looked really at the blurb. I just saw that it was a Carrie Aarons book and I quite like that author. The book starts off again with the main female characters having a unisex name - Blake. I have to admit that it wasn't till I got to chapter 3 that I realized that Blake was a female as after reading the first few pages, I thought we might have a book from a male POV. What made me the double check was that Blake had brought from the supermarket romance novels and chocolate and I was like wait a minute - a guy buying romance novels? We learn that a tragedy occurred on a night that was Blake's best and worst night of her life and that Carson Cole was involved. It has been ten years since that night, and for Blake, she fell apart and turned borderline agoraphobic and for Carson - he stayed away for the ten years. That is until now, Carson has returned home to take over his father's business with the horses. With Blake doing the graphic design for the business and it being a small town, the pair is bound to run into each other on more than one occasion. What will happen though when they are both confronted with the issues of that fateful night? Has fate given them a second chance to work things out and move on with forgiving one another? Will this be an open the door to a possible re-ignition of their romance and love for one another? Ghost in His Eyes was a slower read than I was used to and I have to admit, Blake's character frustrated me a bit as the tragedy was like a massive dark cloud hanging over her. It was like that's what she lived for, and made no effort to try and move past the accident, she was living in a constant depression and dark spot and hello, small town - everyone just let her be that way - where was the support? Overall, however, if you want a second chance edgy romance with a sprinkle of wild horses and foals then check out Carrie Aaron's new release "Ghost in His Eyes."

There were some aspects that I enjoyed but I wish that Blake and Carson didn't resolve their issues so fast. I felt that within seconds they were over it and back to being in love with each other. I realize that they always loved each other, of course, because it is a second chance romance, however, the hate between them after 10 years was something I wanted to span out more.

But overall it wasn't too bad.

ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

Blake has closed herself off from the world, content to live among the wild horses on the coast with minimal human interaction only. Though successful in her career and accepting of her future, past wounds still feel fresh for her, especially after seeing the one man she wanted to never see again. Carson Cole is the keeper of her memories, the only person she ever loved more than her family and the only person she hated as much as she hated herself.

Carson is home, back on the island and back in the path of Blake's hurricane strong anger. Their past was never resolved, an open gash on his heart like the scars that still mar his skin. When they cross paths repeatedly despite intending to avoid one another he pushes for the communication dam between them to open. When the past and their imprisoned emotions are set free they will either find forgiveness and love again or scatter their hearts in the sea.

"Everything here reminded me of her. Relics of a lifetime ago. And what reminded me of her brought every last whispered thought of him back to life."

Let's just put this out there, I am a crier, I always have been and I always will be, but Ghost in His Eyes had me crying the ENTIRE TIME. Carrie Aarons has a way with words already, but her descriptive writing style in this emotional second chance romance won me over. Ghost in His Eyes very much so focuses on each individual's grief rather than the romance between the main characters. Carrie takes readers into the past with flashbacks and through the motions of life in the present as both Carson and Blake struggle with acceptance, self-love, and forgiveness. There was less angst than one might expect, which might be a negative for some, but made Ghost in His Eyes a definite five star read for me. Come on, I was crying and it didn't even have a ton of angst, imagine what I would have been like if it had! I like that it was more sweet, that the characters found comfort in one another after so long, and that despite life's pains both had managed to become independent individuals with realistic lives.

"His touch is both heaven and hell, it's repairing my bruised and broken heart and also slicing it ventricle from ventricle."

Ghost in His Eyes might just be my favorite Carrie Aarons release to date and I definitely recommend it to all my fellow readers that love a good cry over a romance novel. With beautiful prose, a unique setting, and a second chance romance that makes you believe in love, Ghost in His Eyes is a five-plus star read.

This is labeled as a small town, angsty, second chance romance and let me tell you only one of those is right. Can you guess which one it is? Small town.

This is a relatively short book, less than 200 pages on kindle, and I knew it would be rushed but I didn't think anything could be that rushed.

This is literally about a couple who broke up due to a tragic accident, guy moves back to town 10 years later, and after they see each other in public like twice they're essentially back together and the rest of the book is them being lovey-dovey.

No fighting for each other, no declaration of any sort of apology (there really wasn't one needed in this situation, but it still would have been nice.) It was just "Hey I moved back to town and still love you" and she was like "okay here are all my emotions and the trauma I have been through, love you too! Also, I'm going to be pregnant in no time!"

While the plotline of Ghost in His Eyesby Carrie Aarons was enjoyable I still have to admit that I could not get into the story the way I wished I would have.

It took me a while to realize that it was the writing style that somehow disconnected me from the characters. And I really need to feel close to the characters to be able to give a good rating to the book.

Strangely there was so much emotion WRITTEN in the book but I could not feel it while reading.
Not long ago I read a book with a very similar plot and I could not help but compare the story as it progressed and here I felt it was very slow – to slow in fact.

The characters – especially the female lead seemed to wallow in their despair without any chance of moving forward. Also I felt it was suddenly a too fast (or too easy?) when it came to their HEA, with all the despair I would have expected more drama towards their goal.

So overall I have to admit that while I like a good second chance novel – this version will not be one of my favorites. But judging from the raving ratings I see I think the author does not need to worry about the reviews and I am just the odd one out here. So don’t mind me and enjoy this read.

This second chance romance could have been super angsty (which is what I was expecting), but it ended up being rather sweet. I expected Carson and Blake to have angst, arguments, tears, etc. for a good portion of the book. I'm glad they got their HEA and that they were both able to get past the events that tore them apart ten years ago. But it seemed a little to easy for them.

Ghost in His Eyes
By Carrie Aarons
4 Stars

What an emotional ride this book took me on! How much can a person suffer through in their lifetime before something good happens in their life. If it ever does…. This is a story of 3 young kids growing up together, forming a bond between the three of them that cannot be broken. One night after a tragedy, lives are changed forever. Words are said that can’t be taken back. A trio of friendship has been broken…

Now 10 years later, Carson is back in town. He was Blake’s first love, first everything. Yet the past has separated them. Who would have ever thought that he would return to the place that tore the three of them apart.

Blake has spent the past 10 years as a hermit. Unable to get past what happened that destroyed her life, her family, her first love. But now that she has seen Carson in the grocery store. She is fearful of what might happen now that he’s back.

This story is a second chance standalone contemporary romance. Carrie Aarons describes the scenery perfectly and tells the story of 2 hurt, lost individuals who truly have loved each other since they were 7 years old.

3.5*'s.

This is a story about young love, high school sweet hearts with the world at their feet. That is until the unthinkable happens. Then everything gets turned around and things said in the heat of the moment that hurt deeply.

Blake Sayer is living a reclusive lifestyle that she didn't plan on when she was a teen. Things are very different for her now. Carson Cole was meant to be in her life, but after that night, he left town for ten years. Now he's back to run the family business and maybe get a chance to talk with Blake, and work through that eventful evening.

I am a lover of second chance romances so was happy when I was offered to read this book. I felt the characters were strong and the story line complete. I did feel it lacked a little on the suspense. There was plenty of drama and some angst and a whole lot of romance which makes my heart sing. I think it was because they found their HEA early, I was waiting for a dilemma that needed solving beyond their reconciliation. If you are looking for a sweet romantic story that will leave you on a high, then this book is for you.

Ghost In His Eyes is more than just a love story, its more than just a second chance romance. This is a book about healing, about moving on from the past and looking forward to the future. Blake and Carson grew up together in a small town surrounded by wild horses and not much else, them two along with Blake's twin brother were inseparable, until tragedy struck....A tragedy that not only drove Carson out of town but ultimately destroyed everything they all held dear.

Ten years on and Carson is back, he has learnt to let go of the past and come to terms with what happened. A chance encounter with Blake tells him that not everyone has moved on, and some are still surrounded by tragedy.....can Carson help Blake move on? And more importantly will she even let him?

Blake hasn't had an easy life, tragedy struck her 10 years ago and after that her life kind of went into a domino effect of bad events. Now a recluse she keeps herself to herself never letting anyone in......Until Carson comes back to town. Could he be the one who breaks down her walls and brings the wild girl back to the surface?

From the very first chapter this book reeled me in, pulled at my heart strings and made it clear i wasnt doing anything else until i had read every word. I finished it in one sitting, the emotional rollercoaster i went on was all worth it for the HEA Blake and Carson got. Each character offered a little something new that kept me rooting for them no matter what happened.

I'm still wiping the tears. One thing Carrie Aarons is good at is writing emotional books that completely suck you in.

Carson & Blake were childhood sweethearts that were also each other's soulmate. Everyone knew they were meant for each other. They only ever had eyes for each other. Then tragedy strikes and it causes a huge rift between them. They were both broken and Carson leaves town.

Ten years later Carson returns home and run into Blake but it was terrible reunion. Blake couldn't stand to see Carson and he realized that he still loved her. It took a very long time for Blake to even tell Carson hi. This was not your typical second chance insta love romance. This was them taking their slow time and Carson not rushing into anything.

Once Blake started opening up to Carson again the love they felt came right out of the pages. There was no angst very little drama but lots of emotions. The flashbacks of when they were kids and started falling in love will tug at your heart.

The last chapters were the most beautiful and the epilogue will have to in tears.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.

Childhood sweetheart until a horrible accident torn them apart.
The heartache, the pain they let their grief take over them.

I liked this story you could feel the pain and anguish when they lost a loved one how they blamed themselves and ended up in hatred.

They tried to get over the heartache together and embrace life again.
It's a great read very sad at times but you have to believe they will be better for it.

After reading the blurb I loved the sound of this, but when I read it I really couldn't connect with the characters the way I'd hoped.

Blake Sayer has had so much heartache, so much so it made her somewhat of a recluse. So when on her monthly trip to the shops Carson Cole makes it known that he's back after ten years.

Ten years ago there was the heartbreaking loss that effected both Blake and Carson. They were each others first loves, but the heartbreak tore them apart. Now that Carson is back will he and Blake be able to get past the hurt and pain of their past and forge a future together.

What I imagined would have been an angst filled second chance was more sweet, but it was a much enjoyable read.

This was so sad. It was hard for Blake to see Carson after ten years. He brought all the memories back of that tragic accident.

I found it so hard for both of them because not only did they lose a person they loved, they also lost their love. They had to go on and grieve two losses and my heart ached so bad for both of them.

Their tension is hanging of the edge and you see it slowly come undone after years of suffering in silence and apart. It’s beautiful how they finally allow their self to accept what happened and forgive.

4 Healing Crowns

Ghost in His Eyes focuses on the healing powers of love, as readers follow two incredibly broken people who are trying to wade their way through tragedy to heal and live again.

Carson and Blake are both very broken and lonely characters. Both, having been affected by the same tragic event that ended their relationship, have fled their homes to return many years later. Upon their return at different time periods, they are immediately thrown back into each other's path, and they are forced to deal with repercussions of not only that night that altered the course of their lives but also the fallout of what happened from that night. These two incredibly broken people must work to find their own redemption in order to find their own happy ending with each other.

The plot of this story really chronicles the grief and effects of loss on the psyche of a person. Through the use of flashbacks, the author is able to establish the connection between all of the characters, heightening the effect of the loss of all the characters involved. Additionally, the authors words accurately convey the loss Blake and Carson experience, and the reader feels the heartbreak for all the losses that they have endured. Their road to healing is wrought with pain and confessions, but once they begin down this path, their happily-ever-after is just around the corner.

Ghost in His Eyes is another beautifully written romance from Carrie Aarons. It is heartbreaking and gut-wrenching, but she ultimately leaves her reader with hope of what love can accomplish and achieve.

I have a confession to make; I picked this book up because of the cover. I'm usually not someone who judges a book by its cover, but damn, this one is absolutely breathtaking. Ghost in His Eyes was my first book by Carrie Aarons, but it certainly won’t be my last.
And reading the blurb I was intrigued. I wanted to know what happened. I couldn't wait to find out what the title meant!

I have to say, I went into this book with some rather high expectations, which was unfortunate. Ghost in His Eyes starts out fascinating, engaging—enthralling me with its prose and mystery.

I fell in love with Blake in the beginning. She was so broken, shackled by her past, unable to move on. Stuck in place. Granted is was one beautiful place (one I have to visit one day), but still, the past had its hooks in her and wouldn't let go. But she reciprocated, she held on to her anger, guilt, blame, and pain for all she was worth.
She couldn’t see her way past the pain and grief. Not until her high school sweetheart came back into her life.

Carson was just as damaged by their shared past, but unlike Blake, he moved on. He let go and healed from tragedy. However, he never could get over Blake. Even ten years later, he felt her pull. But can two broken souls move past their pain and move on? Or are the jagged edges of souls too painful to heal?

I enjoyed Ghost in His Eyes immensely, the book has a unique backdrop and a solid foundation. I liked reading this book and will definitely recommend it for anyone who's in need of a short second chance love story.
Unfortunately, for me it had a little too many issues to fully enjoy this book. It had a few plot holes and some things didn’t make sense in the character development. The buildup of the story is great, it kept me intrigued, unfortunately the ending left me disappointed after such a strong start.

The writing in this book however, is strong. I loved the almost poetic prose Carrie Aarons has written this book in. I enjoyed the picture she’s woven of the beautiful Outer Banks, waking a desire to see the island for myself.

Regardless of this, I enjoyed reading this story. But since I’m always trying to be honest, I cannot give this story more than 3.5 Stars. I still liked this story and will read move of Carrie Aarons’ book.

Carson and Blake have been in love with each other since they were 9. One look at Blake and Carson knew he would love her forever. The fact that she has a twin brother? Even begged since they are best friends. When tragedy pulls them apart, they have to work to find their love again.

This one was eh. They spent 10 years away from each other and then just get over it? Blake spent the past however many years being a hermit... and then was cool. It was so ... just ehh. There was no real action.

Wow. Ok, this book was absolutely beautiful. I think it's pretty well known that I'm a huge fan of second chance romance. I buy everything up that fits in that category. But even I start to tire of the same formula that's followed. I absolutely love when authors think outside the box and Aarons did that with this book.

Tragic events have separated Blake and Carson. Liked I said before this wasn't the typical boy and girl have a misunderstanding and part ways. The events that led to their breakup were heart wrenching. The anger and pain was translated so well that I got goosebumps within the first few chapters. Blake has isolated herself for the past 10 years. You really feel that sense of loneliness from her. I wouldn't necessarily say she likes it that way, but more so that she been alone so long she doesn't know how to live any other way.

On the other side you have Carson. He's spent 10 years trying to move on with half a heart. So when he moves back to his home town and immediately runs into Blake, it's a shock straight to the heart. He spends the story trying to atone for something that wasn't his fault but that he absolutely blames himself for.

What I liked best about this book was how great the couple communicated. They both wanted so badly to heal and move on. So, when they sat down and had to sift through some really hard stuff they did so realistically. The characters essentially brought each other back to life. The melancholy overtone gave way to something beautiful and hopeful. There is something really satisfying as a reader to watch that transpire.

Any time Aarons releases a book she takes it up a notch. This is no exception.. The emotions of this book absolutely consumed me from start to finish. I really enjoyed this book. 4 stars.

2.5 ⭐️

and that’s me being generous.

quick read? ✅
small town romance? ✅
second chance romance? ✅
swoony hero? ✅

“Our love is like this house, Blake. It’s old and wise, aged with years. It may be shaky at times, but the foundation is solid. The doors may get blown off, the siding may weather … but we are always going to be here. We are always going to survive, make it through, standing tall. That’s how deep my love runs for you. And it will stay that way, forever.”

this book on paper, has everything going for it. i just didn’t feel the execution. it was quick, but almost too quick, the pacing was so off to me..

carson and blake start off as, what is portrayed to be, enemies, after a horrific breakup 10 years ago. especially from blake’s perspective, she supposedly hates his guts. there’s one, maybe 2 scenes of her hating him, and then she opens up to him all of a sudden and they fall back in love.

granted, there’s no 3rd act breakup, it’s a really mature book where things are handled as they should be. there’s just no suspense either, at all.. for lack of a better word, i was bored.

maybe i like miscommunication more than i realised. but this is a sweet book and i love their story, in it’s own way.

Carson met Blake and Joel when they were all 7 years old. Blake and Joel are twins. They all become best friends and then in high school, Carson and Blake start dating and fall in love.

Joel starts becoming more and more reckless, partying and drinking. After he dies in a terrible accident, Blake blames Carson. Carson leaves to go to college and the two don't see each other for 10 years.

When he returns to his home town to take over his parents business, he sees Blake for the first time. She has become antisocial. She works from home and avoids people as much as possible, afraid of the world because of her past. She is hired by Carson's employee to do their graphic designs without Carson's knowledge. He wants to talk about what happened, but she still wants to blame him.

I am a big fan of second chance romances, particularly ones like these where there is no other woman or cheating or anything of that nature involved. This was a sweet story of acceptance and healing and hope for the future. The epilogue from Joel was a nice touch. I will definitely check out more from this author.

This is the first book of this author that I have read. But surely won't be the last!

When Carson and Blake's young love relationship is torn apart by a heart wrenching tragedy and words are said that can't be taken back, it appears impossible that they could ever be friends again. And certainly nothing more.

This is a warming book about forgiveness and rediscovering the parts of ourselves we lose during life's journey. Sometimes it takes an extraordinary kind of love to guide you and complete that journey.

I found myself teary on a few occasions and was desperate to find out where the bumpy road would lead Carson and Blake. If they'd reach the right destination. And if they'd make it there together!

The book was enjoyable and easy to read. And certainly knew how to touch your emotions.

Beautifully broken, Ghost in His Eyes ripped open my heart, spilling buckets of tears before delicately stitching it back together.

Aarons pulled me in with that gorgeous cover and my love of her back list, and Ghost did not disappoint. The emotion poured off the page bringing me to tears. But the love and forgiveness renewed my heart.

Blake has been dealt one rough hand after another. But the biggest blow caused her to lose 2 of the people closest to her and herself in the process. After years of self-imposed isolation, a ghost from her past slowly, but surely brings her back to life.

If you love emotionally gripping reads with an HEA, this book is definitely for you!

The first half of this book was well written and engaging. The second half feels like it was written by a completely different person. I liked Carson and Blake well enough but I just didn't feel their love? The flashbacks were few and far between and skipped all over the place so that it was hard to really feel the love grow between them. Then, when they see each other for the first time in 10 years, after Blake spent 10 years blaming Carson [for something that was absolutely not his fault tbh], there hardly any trepidation in jumping right back into a relationship and telling each other they love one another. Like, that can't be healthy? Especially with Blake's past in an abusive relationship. I just couldn't finish this.

Short version: this was not for me.

Long(er) version: This had so much potential, and I enjoyed the beginning ok, but it fell completely flat for me. The plot, character, and relationship development were all severely lacking and because of that dialogue and movement of the story felt extremely forced. It sounds harsh but I can’t think of another way to describe the whole story as flat…. and so the emotions I was expecting to feel from this “emotional romance” felt obvious, contrived, and a bit corny. By 65% in I was skimming and I just didn’t connect with the story or characters at all like i was hoping to :( here’s to hoping my second book of 2022 connects better…

This book was just okay for me. There were some interesting plot elements, but overall I felt really underwhelmed. I thought some of the dialogue was a bit cringey, the circular arguments got frustrating, and I'm not a fan of the surprise baby trope. And the epilogue felt really weird to me. You wait until the epilogue to give us a memory of Joel and it's THAT memory? Yikes. It felt really really uncomfortable and honestly unnecessary to me. I can see how some people would really love this, but that just was not me.
