Bounty hunters were generally viewed as little better than the men they hunted. Ted Shepard usually didn't pay any mind to what others thought. He was good at what he did. But now, he was trailing a body to his hometown of Wilmore. He might change his mind.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

Wilmore

This was the most disappointing book I've ever read.It was like somebody had an assignment to get x number of words for a check. No story really, just a bunch of random ramblings.Save your money.

The story itself could be a good one if not for the long, drawn out descriptions and extra words. The reader doesn't really need to know so many details that it takes away from the story. Things like, he shut the door. There were too many choppy sentences and it made reading awkward. Ted was a decent guy, but a little too perfect, making it unrealistic. With the many grammatical errors it could use a good editor. I initially gave it two stars, but when I realized I was struggling to get to the end, rolling my eyes several times a page, I edited my review to one star.

Enjoyable book

This books is very enjoy. But.. the edit job was like third grade drop out. Destroyed a good book if you can over look miss placed words and puzzle out wrong words that screw sentence meanings then by all means read this book.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE YOUR FEELINGS

Another great western love story with a lot of feelings that brings men and women together. You have a young male eighteen years old, who was, more or less, abandon by his parents. They left him with nothing other than goodbye we are leaving for Baltimore, and that was it.
Ted Sheppard had only himself, so he had to eat and some sort of housing accommodations. He took up the trade of a man hunter aka bounty hunter. While he pursued that job his name was kicked around by the United States Marshal Service, who told him to pay them a visit for a possible position with the service.
There's a sister riviary which turns deadly when one sister attempts murder against the other sister.
As you read this adventure it seems a bit off especially with Ted Sheppard and the women in his life..At times a bit perverse or narcissistic whichever descriptive word you would use when Ted marries Amy, and the three young girls living with them. But them again kids during that time grew up quick there wasn't anytime to enjoy your younger lives. By the time young girls and boys reach sixteen years of age that's considered old enough for young teenage girls to start thinking of marriage and or, marrying.
This still a good read, plus your given great geography lessons about the different areas that eventually become these United States...😊

I found this story to be truly one of a kind. The author lets you know the feelings of the main character immediately. Ted knows what he wants and who, as he travels back to his hometown a twist here and twist there come.
The characters are fully developed, the struggle that Ted has with his reputation is very, very well defined. Those he comes in contact have no clue as to the dept of his character. This is really a once in a lifetime Love story. A man that loves a woman that knows can never be and a woman that eventually shares his life. It is about a man that is not good at his job, he is great! He does things that are always on the side of right. His notion that going from being a one man company to a group, as finds out has it's drawbacks. Up to and including deaths of those new colleagues. One of which maybe both were avoidable.
The relationship with Elizabeth and Kate show real Love. Everyone in contact with Ted is either to become a friend (life long) or dealt with as the enemy that they are. No in between with TED.
I think you will enjoy this book for many reasons. Mainly due to the interaction of Ted with entire cast of characters that he comes into contact. Very enjoyable. Very positive relationships with all!

too many women loving TedxShepherd

C. J. Petit writes the kind of books that are just right for me. Great westerns and the bad guy always gets what he deserves. Some times the male hero is almost a little too perfect but hey, who wouldn’t want Ted Shepherd as a lawman, husband, and hero. I find it odd that a couple of the reviewer‘s complained that his wife was Amy and the name was changed to Kate. But no where did I ever read that his wife’s name was Amy —it has always been Kate. I don’t think Petit has ever done a rewrite so I don’t know where the confusion came from. There are a little too many women in this story but Ted is kind to them and rescues them all. How nice that the male author thought that Ted needed the good widow Elizabeth and her sex training to prepare him to love Kate?!?! And to love having her portrait around. Yuck! Kate don’t accept this. I read this book second instead of first. Not a good idea.

Continuing Review

I really like your books. I have read 13 of them now and will continue, you keep writing, I'll keep reading. You write a simple, informative western with a love story that's not likely but hoped for. There's a lesson or two to be learned there as well. I do wish you would have someone proofread your completed manuscript on the computer before you print. There are numerous cpu, spell-check errors and the occasional sentence or paragraph that goes astray. In Wilmore, at location 8172, there's a physical impossibly. In the 1880's, barbed wire was heavier than today's. No pocket knife can or will cut barbed wire! A sword or heavy Bowe knife could probably do the job if strung tight.
Altogether, loved your story, especially about King Red and his get. Well done.

A great story of the old West to chew on and digest slowly

Ted Shepard is very good at this job. His job is hunting down bad men, robbers, murderers and worse, and bringing them to the nearest jail for the price on their head. Of course, many of them were brought in tied across their saddle. But Shepard lost little sleep either way. He had a job to do and did it well.
Until he returned to the town of Wilmore where he grew up and old memories came flooding back. Kate Mason was one of those memories, and so was her sister Jean . She had been his girl back then. But now she was married to the town sheriff.
The story grows more complex from here as you might imagine, and only in ways author C J Pettit can shake it up and spit it out to remain exciting and interesting with the turning of every page.

BOUNTY HUNTER, US MARSHALLS

4 STARS for this old west historical era story with spectacular gun fights, magnificent horses, some low down dirty criminals of all kinds from horse theives to the train derailment robbers & law enforcement murderers and much more! The crimes are audacious & stupidifing, but amazing for Ted to help solve in his many capacities. Finally, his ability to draw gives him that extra emotional level to be open for love which he is; and the women go from enchanting to a bit crazy but even the widow mother with the teenage son is treated very nice by Ted. Action Packed ! Interesting! Exciting! Great love making moments!

Well, Just like all the other C.J. Petit books I have read the story is good, different and holds your interest. What takes away from the story is the grammatical errors he makes all through his books. He must not read the book before it goes to press and no editing. I enjoyed the book because it was longer than the usual western. Read it yourself and see all the sentences that have words omitted or something not completed. You will see what I mean as you just scratch your head trying to figure out what he meant.

It seems Ole C.J. Petit likes to mix romance with western action. Strong characters both men and women add quality to the story. This is my second Petit book and thoroughly enjoyed it, I didn't want to put it down. Forget the grammatical errors, I could read through them and hold my interest. I liked that it ended on a positive note and completed the story. I have read so many books that leave you wanting at the end, that could have said so much more but looked like the author was anxious to finish the book.

Keep up the good work C.J.

Fiction or even more!

First of all I am a CJ Petit fan. The pattern I find in his books is a good western action story and also a romance story. Really two for the price of one. In Wilmore certainly the western action is fiction at a high level. The story of an amazing bounty hunter is good stuff. Now the romance story is really science fiction. The protagonist and love have sex of a duration and frequency is so astonishing that it clearly offers the imagination of very far out science fiction. And to add even more, CJ juggles two more loves - wow! Don’t miss it.

Bass Reeves

My favorite REAL American hero of the late 1800's is Bass Reeves. You may know him as The Lone Ranger, although like THIS story the old Lone Ranger western stories have been greatly exaggerated and enhanced. But that's okay. Gus never pretends to be factual even though C. J. Petit uses actual places and technology for the time. Gus is sometimes a bit too good to be true, but there are too few HEROES today and it is awesome to read a real "good guy" story. I really enjoyed this book.

Good reading.

I'm writing this review covering all of Petit's books that I have completed. I like his characters. They are strong men and women. He does tend to follow a pattern with women. There's always severe abuse somewhere in his stories. Also, most villains pee their pants when faced by the hero.

I found the a lot of measures of time, miles, land, etc to be, often, unrealistic.

Overall, I enjoyed the books and would recommend them to any fan of western stories.

Wilmore

This and every one of your books are truly exceptional but I think this is even better. I totally enjoyed this storyline filled with action and suspense. I read over a hundred books a year and find this Author to the very best of all western writters. What makes them better than all others is the truly wonderful love stories. I have now read all of your books and am sad there are no more.

Spoiler alert

I really like this story. The bounty Hunter / Marshal parts were great. The plot was great . The characters were dynamic. This book was obviously written by a man. There isn't a woman alive that would willing accept a picture of her husband's mistress hanging over her baby's bed. Dead or not, a woman deeply loved by her husband prior to her , would cause her pain. Angel or not .

Good western story

Warm love story depicting how tough it must have been to. Live in the eighteen hundreds. There were many depictions of the lawlessness of outlaws and the gradual success of the U S Marshalls efforts to bring civil justice to our developing country. Enjoyable page Turner book. Thank you.

Wilmore a western or romance?

Started off like a typical Western but devolved into a girly style romance filled with errors about firearms use as well as horses. There were occasionally errors in spelling as well. The main character Ted reminded me of Matt Dillon killing bucketful s of bad hombres but only receiving mere flesh wounds himself.

I enjoy C.J Petit books very much they are fast paced and keep you reading but the only thing I find is there are many mistaks wrong names words missing or letters someone needs to do a better job proof reading

.. I would recommend his books and look forward to reading more. I like that he keeps things going through out the books and not wrap it all up at the end of the book

A must read...

C.J. Petit is an amazing writer and even better story teller. I couldn't put this down, read it in two sittings ( job got in the way). Every Petit book gets better and better - being a former law man myself it was easy to get into Sheppard and understand his thinking, could have used him on my Dept!
Read all the C.J. Petit books ... You won't be disappointed.

Good read. Like all of C.J. Petit's work.

This book is excellent. It seems to flow along nicely, a story so complete that I feel that I actually knew the characters in the book personally. I like that. The author tells an excellent tale. Good job. I kept finding grammar mistakes in the book, however I just overlook them.

This is probably my favorite book by C.J. Petit.

This story is truly a saga. There is so much emotion as I write this, I have a lump in my throat. Ted Shepard is an Awesome character as well as All who Love him. I purchased Wilmore and Return to Wilmore at the same time, not knowing what to expect. A true Love story with much Adventure. Now I have another book to read.

Ted is the most noble bounty hunter have ever read.

Mr. Petit has written one of the most engaging westerns I have read to date. I would highly recommend his novel to any reader. Complex and dramatic scenes are portrayed in a writing style that helps me coming back for more. Is the use of Givens as a character , homage to Elmore?

Willmore

Well don't know how many now. But sure know your country. Was raised in Kansas. Hutchinson! Enjoyed this book. Ted's spouse was sure an understanding lady. Elly was kind of cheated. Every one needs that spouse who thinks she is the special one. And who thinks he is special. JD

Wow, loved this one too!

I am starting to wonder if I will ever find a book by this author I don't like! I couldn't help but think maybe Andy was part of Jean and Elly's unhappiness, too bad more men don't take lessons on how to make their mate happy in the bedroom. Once again the story makes me feel like it was taken from real history. Awesome storyline!

Another excellent read but.......

This is one of Petits better books. He is an amazing and prolific writer. I did have a problem with or felt uncomfortable with Ted 's admitted love of Elizabeth and Elli while loving and being totally commitd to Kate. That situation felt very strange.

Very good western story will keep you turning pages

I read a lot of western novels and his is right up there as one of the best. The story was written so it was believable and exciting to read. It had a happy ending so you were not left hanging expecting a continuing story.

A good debatable

A great storyline, will reaten, but he is no Louis L'Amour how was a historian of facts, land , and history, C.J. Petit is good at what he right's but to me he comes close to where is uses innuendo sex to make the book more alive to the readers.
