Special Agent Drew Walker thought he'd never return to Tennessee after that horrific Christmas. Two and a half years later, a serial killer with a strange fascination with mutilation drags him into Nathan Truman’s jurisdiction once again.
For Nathan Truman having the ‘Feeb’ around dredges up a past, he would prefer to forget. For nearly three years, he’s been able to put it all behind him and focus on his career, family, and Quinn.
The past few years have done Quinn Anders a world of good. He’s happy, healthy, sober, and raising his daughter with the love of his life.
As the days pass and tensions flare it becomes obvious that the events of that night, all those years ago, never truly ended for one of them.
The secrets and lies that bind the three may just destroy them all.

Cold Shadow is book 2 in Mercy Celeste's series, Cold Country. This book follows the same characters as book one, and I think you need to read the series in order to fully grasp all details of the story. This is a book with a lot of darkness, sadness, anger, and hate. There were moments when I was reading that I said to myself "what the hell are these two doing together" - much of their relationship was toxic or full of dark interactions. However, there was just something about our two MC Nate and Quinn that let you know, they were exactly where they needed to be.
A character is brought back from book one, into this story - and while his role of being in law enforcement is the same, his relationship with our two MC changes drastically as our Duo starts exploring and dipping their feat into the world of being a triad or a thruple. So needless to say there is a lot of emotional upheaval in this book, feelings of betrayal, feelings of unfaithfulness, learning to navigate and explore each other as "three" instead of "two" - sadly, nothing ever fully gets resolved between our guys because on top of all of the relationship aspects this story has, it's also a murder/mystery story. Someone is in Nate's town terrorizing, mutilating, and then killing Mexican workers who work at Nate's Families Factory, Truman Steel. When the FBI is called in to investigate, Nate finds himself as a suspect due to the past coming back to haunt him. Then when the killer captures someone close to the Truman family, all bets are off as Nate goes off to find his sister's boyfriend.
So, the storyline for this book was captivating. It kept me wanting to figure out what would happen next. The relationship between Nate & Quinn, 4 years down the line from book one, was one I enjoyed seeing. The third, they bring into their relationship...Drew, is someone who I felt meshed well with them. The sex between them was off the charts..the author went out of her way to crank of the heat and include some very naughty things (clicking spoiler tag may give things away about the story) which may be a turn off for some. Then there was talk of things that occurred out of scene but greatly impacted our characters (clicking spoiler tag may ruin book for you) and some of these things may be offensive to some readers. There are a lot of darkness times in this book. Some of the encounters between Nate and Quinn could be taken as brutality and just on this side of safe, sane, consensual sex. A lot of times, these men had explosive, raw, animalistic sex when both of them were just a little out of their minds from situations they were in... so it was a little darker than book one.
In the end, we do not get a full resolution of what will happen between Nate, Quinn, and Drew. Quinn, has just dropped a bombshell on everyone - while on stage at a community picnic. Nate, is on leave from the force. Drew is in recovery from an injury. Book three will hopefully give our guys and this town, family closure... until then, we wait!
This story was powerfully moving, deeply chilling, and amazingly complex. But before I even begin to review it, I need to share some of the triggers that may be problems for some readers. I know I was caught off guard by a few of them and, though they are definitely issues for some people, I was honestly shocked that they didn’t turn me away from this riveting drama.
So proceed with caution if any of these are your triggers because the scenes are vivid and realistic in many of these situations: descriptions of past rape, abuse, and torture; dubious consent; rough, often violent, sex scenes; cheating—on multiple occasions; ménage, and with it, double penetration.
Where to start? First of all, to understand this story you really need to read book one first: In From the Cold in which Nathan Truman was kidnapped, raped, tortured, and brutalized at the hands of a law enforcement coworker turned monster. Nathan’s high school best friend and lover, now deeply closeted—but still involved with him—country western superstar, Quinn Anders, was able to save Nathan’s life with help from FBI Agent, Drew Walker, a secondary character in book one. As book one ended, Nathan and Quinn had made plans to be together quietly and out of the limelight, but to be committed and to raise Quinn’s daughter by an early marriage together. Their relationship would be low profile to the world at large, but known to those closest to them, and Nathan would go back to work in law enforcement. It would be for the local sheriff’s office after he had time to make peace with what happened and heal both physically and, hopefully, psychologically from the trauma.
And that’s where this book opens, but the quiet life they planned falls apart early in the story as someone is kidnapping and maiming Hispanic workers from Truman Steel and the FBI sends in an undercover officer to assess the situation. The officer they send, complete with lip piercings and a whole lot of attitude, is none other than Drew Walker, the Feeb from book one. Apparently his mother is Hispanic and he was raised in a household of Spanish-speaking family members so he’s able to fit in comfortably. Assisting him in getting into the plant is Nathan’s sister, Natalie, who’s now the manager, and Natalie’s boyfriend, the Hispanic foreman.
The story is way too complex to try to condense in any sort of detail in a review, however, it’s easy to sum up in generalizations. First and foremost, there’s apparently a lot more going on with Nathan’s and Quinn’s relationship than most people know—both now and in the past. Quinn not only loves rough and violent sex, he’s participated in it during many past occasions and has not remained faithful to Nathan. In fact, there’s a history there between he and Drew, the man who was portrayed as straight in book one. And Nathan is sexually attracted to Drew as well. As mentioned before, this story features ménage—some pretty hot ménage, to be sure—including a scene of double penetration. But it’s the violence that might turn some readers away. Though they ostensibly love each other, there is very little tender sex between Nathan and Quinn. In fact, it’s most often brutal.
Add to that, Nathan’s nightmares of his past kidnapping, and Quinn’s behaviors when he was addicted to drugs and alcohol early in his career and sold himself for a high, and you get the picture. Now, with the new round of kidnappings and mutilation of the victims, the terror comes closer when Natalie’s boyfriend goes missing. When one of the men is then taken while out hunting the kidnapper, all will have to put their personal needs, plans, and lies aside to bring the killer to justice. And though the culprit may be a shocker, the danger is not lessened when booby traps get triggered.
Honestly, as I write this review, I wonder how I can say I enjoyed the story so much, and yet I did. That indeed is a tribute to the author who dragged me into every scene and gave me a new appreciation of her talent. Unfortunately, the end of the story didn’t have the twist I’d hoped for. I held out the hope until the very last sentence of the story when the statement made totally disappointed me. It may have been 4.5 stars if not for that. I can’t go with 5 because of the cheating that was not mentioned in any of the blurbs or advanced summaries I read. Plus, even after I went back to the previous story and searched for indications that Drew was more important to these men than appeared on the surface, I can’t shake the feeling he was a very minor character in the first story and much of what is revealed in this one as having taken place during the time of the first one doesn’t have a firm foundation in the first book. (Sorry if that sounds confusing.) So a 4 star review here. But overall, I do recommend it to those who like a dark and/or kinky story and can forgive the cheating.
There was one part that threw me out of the story for a moment, but it was just a blip in an otherwise captivating read. I love these characters and can't wait for book 3.
Wonderful book to continue Quinn, Nathan & Drew's story. That being said there are quite a few points that are hard to read such as dubious consent sex, rape, mutilation just to name a few so proceed with caution if these are trigger points for you.
It feels like forever since I read In From The Cold the first book in this series. After the first couple of chapters the memories from that first book came back and I was totally immersed in Nathan and Quinn’s lives once again. I don’t remember things being so wrong between Nathan and Quinn in the first book but when dead bodies start turning up and Special Agent Drew Walker returns to town we are taken on a roller coaster of a ride Mercy Celeste style.
Drew really struggles being back in Quinn and Nathan’s life and it’s not long before his return is causing struggles for Quinn and Nathan. I think putting these three men back in the vicinity of each other even after a few years have passed causes all of them to take a long hard look at where they are in their lives. This story is complicated and sometimes messy. You have a couple who thought they were doing ok when really they are just treading water and a third man who is desperate for one or the other or both of them. There are a lot of things that need to be resolved between these three men but none of them know where to start and in true avoidance they end up in bed together.
But first there is a murderer to catch and the clues left point to it having something to do with one of our men. The storyline is tense and it takes all three men working as a team to resolve the case and survive. They are not just surviving the present – the memories from the past are just as dangerous and the more tense things get the more driven they are to be together.
There is no resolution at the end of this book. There is anger, resentment and concern at being left out. This is a very tentative HFN. Quinn and Nathan’s relationship is really put through the wringer and although they are certainly stronger at the end it’s not clear where they go from here and what role, if any, Drew will have. Another Mercy book that was a total hit for me. This series definitely needs to be read in order.
I love this author. Her books are amazing and I have read almost everything she's ever written. This last one was so good I'm even considering a stab at the m/f novels she's written. But the true compliment is that after reading this book I am also considering her paranormal works, and I hate that genre. I thought the first book was good but there are no words for the roller coaster ride that was Cold Shadow. I spent hours looking for info about when the third and final book would be out. Of course there were some editting misses, but I haven't ever read a single book that didn't have those and I'm a bookworm. I'd have to say that the only issue with Cold Shadow is with the blurb. I found this book to be a love story and when I read that it wasn't a romance I wasn't expecting a love story. I thought it had the kind of real grit I associate with humans being in love, it's not all hearts and rainbows for everybody. I stopped reading m/f tales because of that impression. This was a love story to me and I am just hoping that book three is going to prove Drew wrong.
I adore this book. Dark and full of angst. Loaded with blood, sex, and violence.
Amazingly well written. I want to give five stars, but I reserve five stars for the books that I have read over 10 times. I just got the book so...
Mercy's is one of my absolute favorite writers. She never disappoints.
Fair warning. Not a whole lot of puppies, kittens, and flowers in this book. I find this to be a perk, but I also appreciate a warning from time to time.
I like the fact that Mercy writes about Nathan's struggle with dyslexia. We aren't stupid we just don't see the world the same way everyone else does.
I am dyslexic. I learned a cool trick at a young age, I read words as pictures. I read faster than most people I know. It still takes me forever to type a paragraph. Intellectually I understand the difference between right and left, but my brain still confuses the two concepts. My brain is a bit twisty, but I still managed to pass Calculus III and Differential Equations.
I really appreciate the way Mercy brings difficult subjects to light.
Read the book. Gain insight into how the world works...

I read... well, there was this one book from this author that I liked - more then liked. It was good reading or at least, my reading of the book at that time was really good. But the more I started reading her other novels... Maaaaaaan........
It´s like freaking Russian doll. Except instead of dolls, you just uncover another dirty/messy/twisted truth. It was kind of... I was not sure what to think, the grey areas of... anything, are usually the best - most interesting, at least. I like grey. Not fifty shades of grey =D but Id o like grey - usually.
This was... confusing.
I am almost glad there is no third book - not yet. But I think it´s time I admited Courting Sin was simply all I want from this author and let rest of her books at peace before they won´t let me in peace. I heard and "saw" some sh... stuff. This was not the worst. Emotionally? That was different.
It was not a bad book, per see. Just takes a certain kind of person to like this.
Awesome book, follow up to Cold Country. More insight into the troubled characters from the first book and the return of Drew. Romance only in the broadest sense of the word, as Nathan, Quinn and Drew really seem to care about each other. However, their relationship is awkward, at times devious and in some ways morally wrong. Don't read if your looking for happy endings and sweetness and light, this is not the story for that. Pay attention to the trigger warnings. All these characters are heart breaking, Nathan more so than Quinn, and Drew even more so than Nathan. Mercy Celeste is a master at this kind of characters and manages to blur the lines of right and wrong through empathy with the characters. I'm very much looking forward to the next in the series, the ending left me uncertain - in a good way, and fiercely sympathising with Drew.
Ok let me just start off saying I was not going to read this book. I was happy with Quinn and Nathan being a couple. I did not want Agent Drew Walker brought into there romance. Even after reading the book I am not really happy that the author took this couple this way. Nathan and Quinn grew up together and to me perfect for each other. I gave the book five stars because it was a very good story. I hated the ideal of Drew being with them and still do. I know Drew was there for everything Nathan went through in the first book. Not for sure what the next book will bring.
Wow, what a story. There was enough angst to tear my heart out, and enough heat to set my Kindle on fire. And definitely what I consider to be a cliffhanger ending, although maybe not the prototypical "leave me hanging" ending. But there is most certainly unfinished business between the MCs in this story, and I look forward to the next book in the Cold Country series. After I got over the shock of the end of the story, I had to open a new box of Kleenex--OMG, I can't wait for the release of the next installment.
THE ANGST! THE ANGST! THEIR RELATIONSHIP! ...oh yeah, and there's a nasty serial killer too, but you know, even though 2 of them are policemen...still...THE ANGST! Over THEIR RELATIONSHIP! Not the serial killer...but that gets sorted. Also some sex.
It's not a good sign when you are reading your way through the ANGST!!! Thinking, guys, there's a serial killer at large, and you aren't doing a thing about it.
There is going to be a third novel, and it's obvious how it's all going to resolve.
This is so not what I was expecting. Lots of darkness and angst and I was blown away, can't wait for the next book. This is not a sweet triad love but a compelling journey into the lives of broken men who depend on each other to find the light. Loved, loved loved it. So very worth your time to imerse yourself in their lives.
A great new book! I thought all my goto authors took a years vacations. This was worth the wait. "But for future reference a motorcycle rider would never throw his helmet on the ground, a nice one is about 600.00 a very nice one is 800.00 carbon fiber is around 1,500 and once they take a hit, they need to be replaced." I'm sure Quinn would make sure Nathan's head was protected at all cost.
The writing style bugged me a little. Couldn't tell if it hadn't been well edited, or if it was on purpose, and I feel like there were some inconsistencies in the storyline. But the story slayed me. I can't wait to read the 3rd book. You definitely need to read the first in the series to understand this one.
Well it has so many emotion and u can feel how the mc jumping from one feelings to another , yes they were scared and were lying to themselves about how they feel but i think they were lying to us readers too 😅😅 like every few minutes you get new observation of how they really feel , And maybe we must wait for book 3 , id think it has a closure for the 3 way love story
This is not a romance. This is about three broken men who are connected in a beautiful way. They need each other. Without each other they continue to bleed and unravel but once they get their shit together, they can be beautiful! I can't wait for Stone Cold. *curls around my Drew*
Hmmmmm. I wish I had been a beta reader for this second story. There were too many plot holes in the story for me. And yet, the story was powerful. I would like to have given it 5 stars but can't. This is a dark read so please know that up front.
I don’t think I’ve been this traumatized by a book since Beyond Complicated rocked my world a few years back. Funny how it’s the same author both times. I am still reeling from the hardcore, gritty, and sometimes scary loving these guys get up to. If you could even call some of it loving. Seriously, this book will hit all the buttons for some readers, and send others to the looney bin. I was somewhere firmly in the middle. Kind of horrified but couldn’t look away. What does that even say about me? Quinn and Nathan are amazing characters, and I am still on the fence about Drew…even by the end of this book. I kind of want it to remain just Quinn and Nate, but we shall see.
The first book was not a cake-walk. It was angsty and heartbreaking. But this book takes all that and exponentially ratchets up the drama, angst, the heartbreak, the violence, the hardcore sex, the cheating (which will be a deal breaker for some, but this book would not exist without it), and the love. After I spent hours being knocked on my ass, over and over again, I was once again left thinking our boys are going to okay. They are going to be more than okay, they’d survived horror and relationship troubles and overcame all of those obstacles and still won…and then I saw there was a third book coming out and my heart flip flopped all over again. What the hell can Mercy Celeste do to them now? I am almost afraid to read it, but I know I will be all-in once it hits the shelf. And I know many of you readers, who love the nasty that comes with this author, will be lined up right beside me.
I really don’t want to go into details. Nothing I write could even come close to detailing the emotional blow this book delivers. It is a real love-hate relationship but at the end the love reigns supreme. So, yeah, I definitely recommend this book but make sure you have your big girl panties on because you will not come out of this one unscathed.
