From that moment on, Lance knows he was born to wield it, he has been called to a supernatural adventure that could change destinies, even the destiny of the country, forever.
Traveling with with Albrecht, Reinhardt and Kendrick who all claim to be wizards, Lance must safe-guard the legendary Excalibur as he moves into a strange parallel world. Keeping his friends, new and old, safe from harm at the hands of a malevolent army of magical soldiers, Lance discovers the truth about heroism and the content of his character. The truly important question? Can you ever, really, trust a wizard?
Black Blade (Black Blade Book 1) By Alexander Charalambides 5 out of 5 stars
The story Black Blade (Black Blade Book 1) by Alexander Charalambides is a wonderful fantasy book that I loved reading. The story pulls you in from the beginning and I found myself wondering what was going to happen next. The story has the character of Lance chosen for a journey/quest. He has the sword Excalibur and starts down a path down under present-day London. How will this journey end? Read this book to find out. This is a story that has magic, action, danger, warring families, and a quest to finish. Lance is a character that has undertaken this journey and is determined to see it through. I also enjoyed many of the characters that Lance meets along the way. Some of them are helpful and others seem to have their own agenda and plans. Who can Lance trust? The story is told from several characters POV. It had me guessing and turning pages to find out what happens next. It creates an atmosphere of excitement and mystery. Don’t miss out on a book that you won’t want to put down until the final page. I found myself not wanting this adventure to be over. I would highly recommend reading it.
This is my first book my Alexander Charalambides Reinhardt is a very different character. This is a free flowing book which loses its fourth wall. This book reads as an junior school level more than a young adult due to the dialogue. It starts a little slow but the pace of the book speeds up once you get into the core story. This books takes alot of fantasy elements to it and is told I multiple different POV.
This book was a truly fascinating read, what with the internal monologue, his interactions with Megan, and just the overall feel for the book. Following the different point of views was difficult to understand at first, but definitely made the book a unique read! It spins off our well known story of Excalibur, and oh boy is it a good one! Definitely worth the read and an absolute page turner! I rarely read this genre but I truly love this book!
Black Blade by Alexander Charalambides a cutting four-star read. This was my first read by this author and I hope it wont be the last as I enjoyed the writing style, there was action a plenty and magic and fun to keep the story going, it really did manage to keep a pace well. Its told by several POV’s and that was one thing I struggled with, as I couldn’t keep up, but to be honest it could be me and the place I am in right now, so give it a go and see what you think. The one thin I did really enjoy was fate/destiny story added something special as its always something that has attracted me. The characters are well developed, and the story is good, so dig in and enjoy.
Black Blade by Alexander Charalambides is superb YA fantasy adventure with plenty of action, magic, and fun. This is a quest that will take the characters on an adventure they could never have imagined. With wizards, magic, Excalibur, and much so much more that made this a really great read. As the first book in the series, it was a great introduction to what looks set to be a really fun series. The story is told from several POV’s and is a fairly quick and easy read. I am interested to see what’s in store for us in the next book/s! Can’t wait.
“Black Blade” is a YA fantasy adventure by Alexander Charalambides. It follows young hero Lance and his outgoing best friend Megan as they are thrown from the terrors of high school to a magical quest in Avalon.
Charalambides’ first book falls right in step in the tradition of Rick Riordan’s popular Percy Jackson, with its witty, down-to-earth dialogue, free indirect style, and loose fourth wall. The similarities drew me to the story immediately, and brought out the strongest part of the narrative: the characters.
Lance is the shining element of “Black Blade,” as I’m sure Charalambides intended. When his quest and enchanted weapon is thrust upon him, Lance charges fearlessly into battle, telling Megan, “Look…to be honest, I can’t say I figured this would happen, but it always felt like it should.”
Lance echoes the thought of any young person who has spent their days immersed in stories like his. He is meant for more. There’s adventure waiting for him; he knows it and he craves it. This should be enough to drive the narrative forward and keep Lance on his quest, but other elements are thrown in to further raise the stakes. Most of those decisions were unnecessary to me; they cluttered the lore of the the story and required too much exposition.
The voice does read more like a middle grade story than a YA one, until the introduction of three guide-like figures from Avalon, including one who compulsively curses her way through the book.
The introduction of these three raises other narrative issues, as well. The pace of “Black Blade” requires pithy explanations of events and an almost constant stream of dialogue, but with five regular characters, back and forth dialogue without speech tags quickly becomes confusing.
Charalambides begins POV shifts at this point too, without clarifying time or setting changes, or signifying the switches in any other way. The timeline becomes muddled here, but could easily be fixed with a format that indicated POV jumps. Clarifying these would further shore up the characters, and in turn drive the narrative forward. Everything is connected here, showing that “Black Blade” truly has potential, with clearer movement and cleaner copy.
I give “Black Blade” by Alexander Charalambides 4 / 5 stars. It’s an easy and entertaining read, full of colorful and well-developed characters.
Black Blade is a modern day tale of Knights, realms and the elusive story of Excalibur. This is the first story I have read by this author and enjoyed it till the last word.
It is a great twist on the English legend of Excalibur and the knights of the round table, the story starts off with an unlikely hero in Lance with his side kick Megan in high school in America. When they are called to a meeting by the Principal who informs them that the school has been invited to a field trip to England paid for by an anonymous benefactor of the school, they can't believe it.
Once in England they are thrust into the world of Old tales with three companions who believe they are true knights and that the sword that was rescued from a toilet is Excalibur, then the are trust into a present day treasure hunt in London for the truth.
This story is full of magic, suspense, with twists and turns. I really enjoyed this story although I found the beginning a bit hard to get into, after the first couple of chapters it got interesting and intriguing how the story was going to end. The characters are full of quirky styles and I really liked the character of Megan the side kick (henchman/woman). The writing is fresh and the ideas are brilliant within the story. I would like to read more stories by this writer and recommend this story to anyone liking the fantasy element of fiction.
Black Blade by Alexander Charalambides 4 of 5 Stars “When Fate Calls, Should You Answer?” Excalibur, the legendary sword, “calls out across the ages for a worthy hand”, and a cynical American student Lance is the chosen one. Although cynical Lance recognises his own destiny and so accepts fate and Excalibur. The voice of Excalibur becomes louder as Lance travels into the supernatural world below the London he is familiar with. As Lance becomes involved in warring families alongside friend Megan, he must find the hero inside himself and discover whether, “he rules the sword, or does the sword rule him?”. This is an exciting and gripping read which had me hooked from page one. A great mix of legend, myth, the supernatural and drama it is a fast paced page turner. Black Blade is a unique twist on the legend of Excalibur and I liked Lance’s character, the unlikely hero who here’s the sword calling to him. This book took me on a great adventure along with Lance and it is wonderfully written. I was immersed in the supernatural world below London thanks to Charalambides great world building. I found it was an exciting and fun read.
What I love about this book is it teaches us something we should all carry with us no matter who or what we are. I love books that hold values and morals as a storyline. Cheesy, I know but I love it. Alex Charalambides does this perfectly in this tale which is one for the ages. The book draws you in with Excalibur, who is always on a search, has one question for the universe, “When Fate calls, will you answer?” but calls across the eras for a notable hand until a distrustful American student is selected. Lance, a prideful young man, is ready to assume his destiny and step out on faith. Lance is on for a wild ride into the supernatural world below modern London, his sword begins to speak as the inner champion roars deeper. Caught in a battle within mystical families, Lance faces the conclusive question of: Does he rule the sword or is it the other way around? This book is an instant classic with the storytelling technique that Alex Charalambides writes this story. Grab this one and you won’t regret it!
Lance is a hero who does his best to survive high school, especially in a world that doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. When his school receives a donation from an anonymous millionaire, Lance and his friend Megan, embark on an international trip to England.
Here, they will find a hand, bearing a sword, appears in a toilet bowl. From then on Lance knows he was the one to employ it. So, he has been called on a Quest with three Wizards named Albrecht, Reinhardt and Kendrick, along with Megan to safeguard Excalibur. Lance must also keep his friends safe from the army of magical soldiers.
Black Blade is a well written story and has everything from action to paranormal and was very enjoyable to read. It is a modern day story of Excalibur and a wonderful twist on the fairytale, where Lance, Megan and the wizards are all on a treasure hunt.
This is a really enjoyable book and would really recommend. It is full of twist and turns with fantasy, adventure and amazing characters. Looking forward to reading more from the author.
When I first started reading Black Blade (Black Blade Book 1) by Alexander Charalambides, I was a bit put off with the short clipped dialogue of our hero and heroine. But as I continued to read, I realized how normal that was. That is exactly how a great many of us speak and communicate. It was worth sticking with it because as you progress through the story the other characters in the story have dialogue that is a thing of beauty. I love language and how it flows together, and this author brings it to the fore. The characters are very unique, well described and memorable. The world he builds is diverse and you can almost smell it. There is plenty of action, twists and turns and quite unpredictable. Then, of course, there is always the story within the story. Just a little head up here the story goes at a nice little pace until you near the end. It’s a page turning roller coaster after that. Be prepared.
Alexander Charalambides is a new author to me but I had to know what this book was all about the second I saw the cover. I am not a huge lover of fantasy but sometimes and certain subjects just tickle my fancy more than others and this book happens to fall into that category. While this isn’t a new story so to speak it is told in a new and fresh way that brings the classic fantasy stories we love to a more relevant and realistic point for this day in age. I loved how this book brought to life the world of Excalibur, wizards, magic, and a fantastic adventure that will leave you on the edge of your seat the entire time you read. I most certainly will be back for more as it seems that this book will lead into more in a series from Alexander Charalambides. If you are looking for a magical and fast paced adventure this is the book for you!
Black Blade by Alexander Charalambides is a great fantasy book that is a unique take on Lancelot and Excalibur. This is a relatively new author to me but I was excited to read more of his work. I loved the new take on this old story. The story was in depth and complex, jumping back and forth time wise but the author handles it well, keeping the storylines moving forward nicely. I enjoyed the fact that the story was told from multiple points of view as it gave an overall view of what was going on. This author has a great way of using his words to create a lasting story. It was interesting and unique and exciting to read. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of this author in the future.
Black Blade (Black Blade Book 1) by Alexander Charalambides. This is the story of Lance an American student who is on a school field trip at a Museum when he finds a sword named Excalibur and is chosen to go on a quest/journey into the unknown. He travels into the supernatural that is present day London and the sword begins to talk to him. The voice becomes louder and louder. Along the way he meets many different characters and they all are a huge part of the journey. Lance finds himself caught in a war between magical families and he begins to question whether he is in charge of the sword or is the sword in charge of him? Once you being to read this book you will be sucked in and won't want to put it down until the very end! Its a great story!
Black Blade is the first book I have read by Alexander Charalambides. This book brings the story of Excalibur to modern times. Although this book started out slow for me, it really came on strong a couple of chapters in. It is full of action and adventure, and the characters really grew as the story progressed. Lance and Megan, American teenagers, take a special trip for college to the UK to tour a museum, and that is where the story begins. I really like that the story is told in multiple POV. You really learn what each of the characters are thinking that way. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more by Alexander Charalambides.
Lance is a normal school kid until a trip to an English museum changes everything. When Lance and his friend Megan are attacked a mysterious sword appears out of a toilet and calls to Lance.
Lance realises the sword is for him and that he is destined for great things. Now he has the sword it is a race against time to save the world and himself all while avoiding people who want the sword.
Joining him on his journey are three wizards but can they be trusted or are they all as dangerous as each other.
Its a great adventure full of twists and turns and keeps you hooked.
Black Blade by Alexander Charalambides. While this isn’t my normal type of reading enjoyment I really sank into it. The characters immediately drew me in and I knew I was in for quite the adventure. It’s a story that had me in a wobbly balance of trying to read faster to see what would happen and wanting to slow down so it lasted longer. The characters are complex and the author knows how to to bring not only the characters but the storyline to life through words. The storyline is well written and paced nicely never feeling rushed or lacking anything. I can’t wait to see what else this author has to offer and what adventures us readers will be taken on. Four big stars and highly recommend!
Black Blade (Black Blade Book 1) by Alexander Charalambides - Review by Makaela Patterson
The Black Blade fantasy series that will leave you asking questions in a good way. This book is a thriller in a magical place. It will take all the strength and power of these best friends (Lance and Megan) and fight their way to their density. But will it be evil or good? I enjoyed how the author introduces the characters in the book. As I was reading I kept thinking about what could happen next before I would turn the page. I found myself going back to reading a few pages again to better understand the undertone of how the story was written. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it.

Black Blade (Black Blade Book 1) by Alexander Charalambides
4-Stars
Black Blade (Black Blade Book 1) by Alexander Charalambides was an interesting read. This book took me on a fascinating adventure but it took me a little bit to get into the storyline. I was confused about the main characters at first but grew to understand them better as the story moved on. I liked how the chapters were organized and also how the characters reality seemed to have different layers. That, to me, was very unique and creative. I look forward to reading more in this series.
Black Blade by Alexander Charalambides was a good story with a good storyline, but I found myself struggling throughout reading it. It didn't grab my attention like I thought it would from reading the synopsis. I enjoyed it, but I found myself confused with the timelines and overall how the main character, Lance, narrated the story. It could have been because I haven't read the first book in this series, but this just wasn't the book for me. I look forward to reading this book again one day though, after I read the first one.
5 Star Black Blade (Black Blade Book 1) by Alexander Charalambides is a wonderfully written book that I loved reading. I couldn’t put it down till I finished. I found myself lost in the pages wondering what was going to happen next. This Author took me on a fun adventure with some magic, wizards, action a little danger and Excalibur. What happens when Lance gets stuck in a war where tough decisions have to be made? Will he rule the sword or will the sword rule him? Find out what happens next in this absolute must read. I can’t wait to read more from this Author.
When Fate Calls, Should You Answer? A modern day Excalibur story, i love old tales told in the modern day, I don’t think I’ve read anything quite like this book. The writing style was different, I loved how we saw it from each characters point of view. Hats of to Alexander on his great writing style. When on a unexpected school trip to the uk, Lance and Megan run into trouble at a museum. The big question is Will Lance rule the sword? I urge anyone to read this book, if you love magic, knights and fantasy you are in for a treat.
We are taken on quite an adventure. This book gives us a unique take on excalibur and all that entails. There is action, magic, originality, and great characters. This is the first time I have read anything from this author and I'm glad I did because I enjoyed the way this book was written. You might be a little confused in the beginning but I promise you it does all come together and makes sense. The action started almost from the beginning and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. I recommend this book, it was a fun read.
Black Blade by Alexander Charalambides YA fantasy paranormal story that is full of magic and adventure. It is Alexander's first book and is a fun way to start the series and it is funny and a joy to read. There are a lot of characters and the story being told by different POV’s and at times it is a bit confusing to keep them all straight. The story is easily read and definitely entertaining. Alexander has done well with this first book and I look forward to the next one.
This is quite an adventure. Filled with wizards, Magic and Excalibur is a retelling of a classic. While the story drew me in I struggled with the timeline of the characters. It is confusing to me and makes the story not flow very smoothly. Causing me to lose interest at times. I plugged on and the story does pick up near the end. The main character held my interest and wondering what would happen to him and the sword. There are few secondary characters who I liked and others not so much.
This story is a great twist on the story of Excalibur. The story is a fast pace story. Once I started this book I could not put it down. The characters of the book are fully developed. I found that the characters are what makes this story of Excalibur fun. Lance, the main character, always knew that he was special. He could sense the greatness within himself. He has some rough times ahead. I recommend this story. It is the perfect break you need from the craziness of today.
I absolutely loved this book! The author does an amazing job weaving subtle plot points in with storylines that seem very familiar but are told in a fresh new way. The book flowed quickly and seamlessly. Tons of detail. Charalambides is an incredibly gifted writer that entranced the reader with an amazing storyline. Highly recommended for all fantasy lovers!
Black Blade by Alexander Charalambides is a fantasy adventure following Lance, an American student, who finds Excaliber and is chosen for a quest. This story is full of action and magic. I enjoyed the characters, but was a little confused by the timeline at points. The POV changes also confused me a bit. I think with a few more headings that can be fixed. I do think this was an interesting and unique take on the story of Lancelot and Excaliber. I look forward to reading the next adventure from this author.
This is a unique YA fantasy that I enjoyed. I found the slow pace at the beginning and the way the internal dialogue is written difficult to get used to at first. But the characters are well-developed and the plot keeps moving. The timelines and points-of-view change throughout the book, which adds to the story, even if it is also a little confusing at times. Definitely a page-turner.
