An Ocean Between: The 1646 Journey of Lysbeth Michielsen

Rate this book
Sometimes life surprises us with a different path than the one we expect...

War-torn Bavaria. 1646. When fifteen-year-old Lysbeth Michielsen makes a terrible mistake that puts her brother in danger, she has no idea how far she’ll go to fix it. Her perilous escape takes her to the city of Amsterdam, across the stormy Atlantic, and through the beautiful but deadly Caribbean. A determined Lysbeth may dream of becoming refined and educated, but that doesn’t stop the farm girl from brawling with street urchins or dressing like a cabin boy to protect the people she loves.

After an irritatingly handsome soldier joins the voyage, Lysbeth finds herself entangled in dangerous complications. Will the young man return her youthful affections before they part ways, or will fatal fevers and treacherous villains keep them from even completing their voyage? As they sail toward New Amsterdam with Petrus Stuyvesant, last Dutch director of New Netherland, Lysbeth will find some unlikely allies in Stuyvesant’s powerful sister and a scheming widow. But with the journey’s end looming on the horizon, time is running out…

This is an historical adventure for young teens and those young at heart.

COURAGE, DETERMINATION AND HEART!

What I really liked about this book was the heroine’s courage to go after the things she wanted. Coming of age in the sixteen hundreds held many perils, especially if one was poor, landless and female. To survive, she had to be observant, flexible and smart.
Lysbeth Michielsen’s dreams were not so very different from those of many young women: to have a warm, safe home with enough to eat and a clean bed to sleep in every night. But for her, obtaining them was particularly difficult. War-torn countries, perilous voyages and island fevers were only a few of the things she had to contend with. Innocent mistakes could be deadly, especially when evil and avarice ruled.
Through it all, she never gave up, and became even more determined. Yet she often made sacrifices to safeguard her stepbrother.
Before her stepmother died, she promised her she would look after him and keep him safe. Her task was made more arduous by their precarious living conditions and her brother’s sometimes foolish activities.
Like all good stories, Lysbeth finds a love interest, and she meets all sorts of unusual characters along the way.
This is a great book for those coming of age and anyone who loves an exciting adventure!
