From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Mara Jacobs comes Book 4 in the Anna Dawson mystery series. My name is Anna Dawson, and I want to stop gambling. This time I really mean it. Sure, everybody has a bad night now and then. Maybe even one they can’t quite remember. But most of those don’t end with you waking up next to a dead body. I wasn’t crazy about it when it happened to me. Things had been going so well, too. I was in therapy working on my issues and hadn’t gambled in over a month. I’d made some new friends in my group sessions and really enjoyed hanging out with people who shared my flaws. Until I was once again embroiled in a murder case. What’s the over/under on possible jail time? * The case is solved, the perpetrator caught, but there are a few threads that are continuing on through the next book and the series. Books in the Anna Dawson series thus 1 - Against The Odds 2 - Against The Spread 3 - Against the Rules 4 - Against The Wall 5 - Against The Grain

I’m loving this series—the heroine with her sports betting addiction and the hot detective who can’t live with her and can’t live without her. Feeling all kinds of guilty, Anna’s joined ranks with some new characters to try to tamp down her betting “buzz.” Little do any of them know they’ve got a shark swimming within their ranks. The story starts out with a ”what-the-hell” bang and then recounts Anna’s twisty ride. You’ll get a nice dose of the quirky old timers, brooding detectives, JoJo’s basketball buddy, and the lovable ex-Vegas showgirl who helps keeps them all together. What I really loved about this book is the group dynamics going on both in and out of therapy. Against the Wall is real, emotional, entertainment that keeps you guessing until the end.

Waking up next to a dead body puts Anna Dawson in the police spotlight once again. That's how the story begins before backtracking to how she got there. With her desire to quit gambling at risk, she joins a support group of other addicts. These people understand her and her addiction. Unlike the people who live in her house--her closest friends, her responsibility.

The Anna Dawson stories have fascinated me since the first book. Anna is a flawed character whose appeal (to me, anyway) is how she deals with her flaws. Guilt, shame, restitution. With a smarmy detective who has it in for her, she had to discover why the guy she wakes up next to is dead and who killed him. I was more concerned that Anna would fall off the wagon again. We learn more about her in this book. While she's always been concerned about the people in her home, the reader wonders if she's using them as an excuse not to take care of herself. The resolution was satisfying with enough hints to another story that made this reader very happy.
