Fleeing through a broken wilderness, Bea struggles to find food, water and help before it's too late. A terrible sickness is creeping through her camp, picking off survivors and slowing their escape. Bea vows to save what's left of her family, but she has made dangerous enemies. They are ruthless. They are watching. And they will seek revenge.
The wait for this was way too long but it was worth it! Enough of the back story is covered very early to make this book stand up on its own and the action tilts along at quite a pace from there. There's big reveals, a new 'Big Bad' and twists galore to keep you riveted to the end. More please!
A gripping, fantastical read. I also enjoyed Amanda’s previous book, UNWANTED and HUNTED was just as imaginative and well written. It’s not necessary to have read UNWANTED to enjoy HUNTED, but it might help you appreciate the elaborate world Amanda has created. I won’t reveal too much about the plot as I don’t want spoilers for people who haven’t read UNWANTED, but briefly: Bea Azaeli and other members of the resistance have escaped the falling of their city, and are now trying to survive in the wilderness. But Bea and her family are being stalked by dangerous forces. Who can Bea trust when so many around her are not what they appear to be? Fiercely inventive, the world-building in UNWANTED and HUNTED reminded me of Surrealist paintings. HUNTED is strangely beautiful with its Storks, Glimmercrafts, Tell Me Towers, Dread Warriors, Wildborns, swirling Elder Ink , Medics, Shepherds and the sinister Whisperers and Sleepers Curse – not to mention the ominous Patch the Axe Man, Erebii, and the chilling little-girl character. But at its black glittery heart, UNWANTED is about connection and the bonds that hold us as part of a civilised society – even when that civilisation is smashed to pieces. It is a true dark tale for our times, with hope that shimmers through the darkness. HUNTED is marketed as a YA sci-fi but should appeal to all ages. I loved it and look forward to seeing the next offering from Amanda.
Just as unique, twisty and fast-paced as the first book. I especially enjoy Bea as a protagonist and the nasties she has to fight. I really hope Holohan writes more in the future because her writing flows so well and her world building is amazing!
